If there’s one thing that crime stories have taught us time and time again, it would have to be to keep a cool and level head in all things illegal. Simply because the goal here is to commit the crime and never get caught and the only way to accomplish that is to never let ‘em see you sweat. Which is why the next episode of Bad Sisters on Apple TV+ is of note. Simply because ‘The Cold Truth’ is a story that defies that particular convention, largely because of the shocking discovery that Becka made last week in John Paul’s basement in the past. Because finding a frozen body meant that the Garvey Sisters were dealing with a killer of sorts, and a flashback more or less reinforced that, since John let his father die without lifting a finger to help. Which in turn, created a sense of urgency in putting him down, one where the ladies had to think of a smooth and quick plan to do so. But before we dig too deeply into this urgent plan, we do need to take a moment and discuss what happened in present day in this tale since it revealed some surprises. For John Paul’s body was exhumed at last, and once Becka found out through Matt’s phone… she let everyone know and well, the panic present there, spoke to the reality that the Garvey Sisters were indeed responsible for his death, and were now worried about being caught. Which was ironic panic for certain, since the body revealed nothing conclusive, leaving them in the clear from a baseline standpoint, but their collective conscience clearly took a hit. But while that left them free and clear in present day, the past was rife with urgency to bring down John Paul at last. Simply because Becka saw the freezer as the opportunity of a lifetime. After all, if he was down there every Friday night keeping an eye on his frozen dad, or Popsicle if you will, there was a chance that a little planning could allow for the door to be shut and locked behind him. And then… the temperature could be lowered so that he would freeze as well. Making it look like a momentary lapse of consciousness of some kind might have led to a freezing incident and the lack of evidence hinting at otherwise would leave the sisters free and clear of trouble. Which was… a solid plan, one that Eva just couldn’t get near and understandably so. For she was pretty rattled in this tale, since John Paul got the promotion, she was bucking for, and she wanted to be surrounded by peace and quiet and revisit this whole mess when she wasn’t overwhelmed. But seeing her in that shaken state, and seeing Ursula be badly rattled by John Paul’s desire to control her personal life… pushed Becka to the limit. And she created her own, urgent timetable to deal with John Paul and after putting his mother to sleep, she lay in wait to send him into the afterlife and well, we’ve finally seen the end of John Paul. For the door was indeed opened and Becka was able to trap him inside and lower that temp to freezing. Which would explain the inconclusive nature of the autopsy and well… that is a bold way to end this tale. Since it moves this story straight into the aftermath of John Paul’s end, and allows for it to focus on how Thomas and Matt will now recover, if at all from paying out a devastating policy they couldn’t prove as fraudulent and of course… how the Garvey Sisters will reconcile their actions and of course, if they are willing to pass the truth along to Grace when the dust has settled and the checks have cleared. Which means we are heading into undiscovered and bold territory with this tale, and that is par for the course for this series… since it loves to trailblaze and surprise, and it will be quite interesting to see, how the resolution of this moment plays out with only two episodes left in this magnificent and engaging season of storytelling. Until next time.
