Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Episode Five of ‘Tehran’. If there is one particular lesson that is always wonderful to find embedded within the framework of a spy story, it would have to be that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Because a good spy story understands that both the hero and the villain are working toward vastly different goals in the story, and that when one side pushes, the other one is going to push back. Because that’s what creates drama and tension and a worthwhile showdown between the spy and the monster and thankfully this is a lesson that the next episode of Tehran made sure to put on display. For ‘The Other Iran’ is an episode that was filled to the brim with action and reaction. But as this series is wont to do, it made certain that this lesson was catered to the unique style and design of this series. Which means that this particular lesson was handled in a subtle manner in addition to the more direct approach by way of Tamar’s journey in this tale. Because she was on the road with Sickboy (whose real name is Milad) and his buddies in an attempt to get close to the substation head so that Tamar could complete her mission. But alas, Tamar’s lack of knowledge about everyday customs in Iran, is what brought about some unfortunate causality. For an inappropriate gesture at an IRGC checkpoint, forced Milad’s friend Karim to bribe the guards to get out of trouble, and that in turn pulled Tamar into a world she didn’t understand. Because it turns out that Milad and Karim run drugs from time to time to pay the bills and survive and since she cost him so much cash, she was recruited into the cause in order to pay Karim back. And while she was quick to go along with it to keep her cover and keep the mission going, she has clearly caught Karim’s eye and his distrust and no good can come out of that. But while Tamar’s journey in this episode offered up a more low-key analysis of the consequences we face for our actions, the more direct lesson came about by way of Tabrizi and Fariz. Because the Mossad wasted zero time in revealing to Fariz that his wife was in their care now, and that the only way he was ever going to see her again; was to release Tabrizi and get him into Istanbul. A revelation that rattled the IRGC agent in a manner we’ve never seen before, since he is always calm and cool and collected regardless of the problems surrounding him. But his beloved wife is indeed his weakness and that motivated him to do exactly as the Mossad instructed. But giving in to the demands of the Mossad is something that left Fariz feeling quite filthy, and the fact that his boss had questions about his decision to release a prisoner, regardless of the reasons; reminded Fariz that he let his enemy get the better of him. Which in turn motivated him to go back on the deal with the Mossad and demand that Tabrizi stay in Iran and work for the IRGC, since he could likely deliver Tamar to Fariz on a silver platter, and that is quite the stunning pushback for certain. For now, it means that his wife, in a slightly fragile state, will be in Mossad hands for the foreseeable future and that wasn’t the only consequence to come about from the decision to kidnap Fariz’s wife. For Tabrizi came to realize that he was nothing more than a pawn in this whole mess, and that he’d risked his safety and the safety of his family for very little in life and that motivated him to stay in Tehran. A decision that in turn, had its own set of consequences. In that, there was no way that the Mossad would let a compromised agent just do his own thing, and that brought about an assassination order. And in the closing minutes of this tale; Fariz was forced to watch Tabrizi die. Which is a stunning way to end this particular tale. Because just like that, a man that was seemingly trying to do something good in the world is wiped out, thanks to the horrible games that both sides play and really the only positive to come out of this whole sorted mess; is that Tamar is safe and sound and still under the IRGC’s radar. But all shock aside, this really was quite the magnificent episode. Because this one raised the stakes to all kinds of new heights and what’s truly wild about this story, is everything that happened in this particular tale, is only going to inspire further consequences. For Tabrizi’s death will only motivate Fariz further in his no-holds barred approach to finding Tamar, and her actions in this tale are undoubtedly going to push Kamir to cause more trouble for her and well, that is going to make the wait for next week’s episode downright unbearable. Because we simply have to know where this grand setup is going to take us next. Until next time.

Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episodes 4-6 of ‘Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones’. What is truly fascinating about big time franchises that have been around for decades on end, is that it becomes quite easy to lose sight as to why we fell in love with these franchises in the first place. Because the best parts of them are always on display, since those elements are the foundation of their respective storytelling. And truly, the only way to be refreshed upon what makes these shows and movies so great, is to take a moment and return to the beginning of the journey, so that one can see those all-important elements in the raw. If anything, this is relevant to today’s discussion, simply because last night’s special broadcast of Doctor Who served as the perfect opportunity to revisit the early days of this storied saga and be reminded of why we love it so. Something that the finale of 'The Faceless Ones' accomplished in part, by pointing out how good the writing is on this show. Because while this particular serial was assembled in the 1960s, it did a lot of things that no science fiction series was doing at the time. In that, it presented aliens as more than plot devices or monsters eager to conquer mankind just because they can. Instead they are dynamic beings here. The kind that have depth and motivation behind their decisions and that is put on full display in this tale. Since we come to learn here that our baddies are in fact, a dying race. One that is in desperate need of fresh bodies to keep their species alive and while that is a cliché now, this was original writing back then and the wonder of this deconstruction doesn't end with this particular lesson. For this serial also does a wonderful job of reminding us of how epic this show is on a consistent basis. Because this serial offers up a master class on building tension. Since it gradually builds to an intense finale, one that takes us on a wild ride through outer space and it doesn’t hurt that the stakes are incredibly high in ‘Episode 6’. Because seeing the Doctor do his best to escape assimilation/conversion at the hands of these mysterious chameleons, actually puts you on the edge of your seat and his incredible bluff to get them to see things his way, is equally as intense. For that keeps the clock ticking on his health and safety and outright future, and the same goes for his companions, and that’s the kind of high stakes stuff we love in the modern era of Doctor Who and the best part is, this sequence also helps to remind us that The Doctor, is the real reason that we fell in love with this franchise in the first place. Because once again, his (and later her) cunning mind is front and center in this tale. And it is just a delight to see him work out the plan in real-time in these particular episodes. Since the manic nature in which he solves problems takes the center stage here once again, as does his no holds barred approach to getting the answers that he so seeks. Because it was quite bold of him to just threaten to liquidate an imposter in order to get answers, and it was equally as brave to sneak his way aboard the Chameleon Tour flight, since there were no guarantees that he was going to make it out of this mess alive and well, it is that bravery and the desire to keep his friends and all of humanity safe that makes The Doctor such a wonderful character. Since you just don’t see corporeal characters that can be physically harmed, put themselves in the path the danger as often as the Doctor does, and while deep down you know he will likely be okay, the quality of the story and the wonder of the moment helps us to get lost in the possibilities. If anything, this was just a phenomenal serial when all is said and done. One that reminds us that serial storytelling wasn’t always the well-oiled machine that it is today. But if it wasn’t for shows like Doctor Who, the incredible story arcs we enjoy in popular culture now simply wouldn’t be possible. And it to top it all off, this is also a serial that actually leaves you quite hungry for more. Because that ending, where The Doctor has seemingly lost his TARDIS and is ready to kick off a search for it, leaves the viewer ready to begin that adventure as well. Because this is Doctor Who we are talking about here and older story or no, it is like reuniting with an old friend and hopefully, we get more of these serials down the line as BBC America and BBC continue to work to fill in the missing gaps of The Doctor’s incredible adventures. Because this was just a true treat and the perfect way to tide us over, while we wait for the Thirteenth Doctor to resume her adventures in this year’s holiday special. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season one finale of ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’. Sometimes in life, discovering the truth can be quite problematic. Especially when the truth in question could bring about all kinds of chaos and trouble for people that are important to us and after last week’s episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks, it really seemed as though the issues that could come about from uncovering an unexpected truth was going to the be focus of the season one finale of this magnificent series. For Ensign Bradward Boimler was struggling mightily at the end of ‘Crisis Point’ with the knowledge that Mariner and Captain Freeman were in fact, mother and daughter and we all knew it wouldn’t be long before Brad brought this up. Which is why it is safe to say, that none of us were surprised when Brad took the time to reveal his newfound knowledge in the opening moments of ‘No Small Parts’, because that’s how Brad do. No instead, what made this grand reveal worth our while, is the sheer fact that his combadge was on an open frequency when he spilled the beans. Which allowed for the entire bridge crew to learn the truth as well and that led to some special treatment for Mariner. Because word spread like wildfire, and now everyone saw her as a conduit to the captain, and they also took every opportunity to kiss up to her to stay in Freeman’s good graces and for a time it seemed as though this particular tale was going to be nothing more than a hilarious analysis on whether or not friendships can survive mistakes akin to the one that Boimler made in this tale, since his big mouth made life hell for Mariner. But as it turns out, this particular finale had all kinds of incredible surprises in store for us. For while Mariner dealt with being everyone’s favorite aboard the ship, dark things were happening in the galaxy. For while the crew of the Rubidoux were breaking in their new vessel, the U.S.S. Solvang, they ran into a massive ship that was armed to the teeth with incredible weapons and was supremely unfriendly to Federation starships, and that led to the loss of the Solvang with all hands. Which was shocking to see here since Lower Decks is often all about the lighthearted fun and well, the surprises didn’t end there. Because the blip of a distress call that Captain Dayton was able to get out was received by the Cerritos, and upon arriving at the Solvang’s last known location, they came to discover the true identity of the aggressors. As it turns out, these bad dudes were a blast from the past. For the Pakleds from The Next Generation episode ‘Samaritan Snare’, decided that the best way to never be burned by the Federation (or ships named Enterprise) again, was to stock up on weapons and build a Scimitar-style vessel that would dominate their enemies and well… that plan worked. For the Cerritos was no match for this enhanced starship and it wasn’t long before the crew was fighting for their lives from corridor to corridor with no end in sight. Which motivated Captain Freeman to try something wild in order to survive this encounter, and she tasked her daughter to come up with some wild card moves to save the crew and the ship and well, what Mariner put forth was incredibly daring and her orders led to the most shocking moment in this tale. Because the plan to infect the Pakled ship with a powerful virus, required the vessel to be boarded, so the virus could be properly uploaded. Which meant that Lieutenant Shaxs and Ensign Rutherford were the right personnel to make all of this happen and thanks to a surprise and explosive twist involving the always bloodthirsty Badgey, Shaxs sacrificed his life to save Rutherford’s. Something that none of us expected to see happen in the slightest since leads rarely die on Star Trek shows. But it happened here, and it was downright heartbreaking for certain, and the only thing that softened the blow, was the finale of this particular tale. For more Pakled super ships were arriving and just when it seemed as though the crew of the Cerritos wasn’t going to make it, a big-time hero saved the day. For Captain William T. Riker warped in at just the right moment and used the advanced weaponry of the U.S.S. Titan to give the Pakleds the business and this was just… an absolute delight to watch since it was downright epic and it allowed for Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis to return to their iconic roles once again. But while it was wonderful to enjoy that perfect moment and get some serious laughs from Riker and Troi since their characters played into the comedy here, the ending of this tale implies that next season of this show is going to be supremely different in design. For Shaxs is gone, Rutherford’s memory is shattered and Boimler is aboard the Titan as a Lieutenant and well, that’s a brave way to end season one. Because those are the kind of game-changing decisions storytelling wise, that you can’t just fix with a Search for Spock twist. But in there here and the now, what matters most, is that season one of this series turned out to be one incredible addition to the Star Trek Universe. Because this show perfectly blended together everything we love about the STU, all while finding a way to forge its own path as a delightful comedy and that is going to make the wait for season two of this series, a difficult one. Because at this point, we are all hooked and eager to enjoy more of what this magnificent show has to offer. Until next year. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episodes 1-3 of ‘Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones’. We live in quite the incredible time for certain, especially when it comes to how we consume our entertainment. Because on a moment’s notice, we can call up a website or open up an app and dive into just about any episode from our favorite shows or revisit a movie that we absolutely love. Simply because technology has made it possible for mankind to be able to archive and catalog all the wonderful television shows and motion pictures that so many have created over the years. But while it is quite lovely to know that we can settle in and binge watch whatever we want whenever we want, it is important to remember that on demand entertainment, wasn’t always a thing. For there was a time where you had to be home by a specific time if you were hoping to catch a live broadcast of your favorite show, and top it all off, networks really didn’t think people would find any value in re-watching a particular series. So, little care went into storing completed episodes, prompting some stories to be lost to the winds of time. Which is something that happened with some classic episodes of Doctor Who. But as time goes on and fans are eager to pour into every story available involving their favorite characters, not only is the archival process being given great care, but some networks are going above and beyond in making sure that fans are treated to every story ever created from a beloved series. Which is why BBC and BBC America are going to great lengths to restore the lost episodes of Doctor Who in some form or fashion, such as by way of animation. Because that particular format allows for an easy and simple manner in which to recreate the look and feel of the original episode, and it just so happens that last night, we were graced with the first half of a restored/animated Doctor Who serial, entitled ‘The Faceless Ones’. Now in this particular tale, the Doctor and his companions arrive at Gatwick Airport after apparently losing their way and as is often the case with our favorite Time Lord, he (in this instance, since it is the Second Doctor in this serial) goes from one crisis to the next. Because it isn’t long before the authorities have questions for the people that just emerged from a Police Box on the runway and to complicate matters further, something quite suspicious is happening at Gatwick. For Polly stumbles upon a murder, one that is incredibly suspicious since the murderer makes use of a ray gun. Something that shouldn’t be readily available on Earth at this point in time. Which of course prompts the Doctor to dive deep into this matter to figure out what is going on and well, what he uncovers is quite unsettling. For it turns out that a race of chameleon-like aliens have set up shop at Gatwick and they are offering tours to young people in order to kidnap them to heaven knows where. Which means it will be up to the Doctor and his intrepid friends to stop these creatures before something terrible happens and well, when we leave Team TARDIS in this particular tale, that might be easier said than done. For these aliens are quite crafty and it doesn’t help that everyone that works at Gatwick is skeptical toward the Doctor and his plans. But what is truly impressive about this particular first set of episodes, is how well the folks behind the scenes captured the essence of the Second Doctor’s adventures. Because despite being animated, everything here feels like a classic episode of Doctor Who. Right down to the awkward pauses and extended motion to fill time in an era where serialized storytelling on television was still finding its footing and really in the end, this was simply a treat to watch. Because this is a Who story that few of us know of and it really is quite incredible to see the Second Doctor in action in a ‘brand-new’ story. One that genuinely sucks you in with the wonderful mystery surrounding these weird aliens and well, this reviewer is definitely hooked and eager to see how this serial is going to wrap up and thankfully we won’t have to wait long to see exactly how the Doctor is going to save the day. Since ‘The Faceless Ones’ concludes tonight on BBC America. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the series premiere of ‘Tiny World’. When we think of documentaries about nature, grand and sweeping stories come to mind. The kind that feature vast and beautiful settings. Wherein the majesty of mother nature is put on full display before we narrow our focus down to familiar animals, and the various habits and quirks that they exhibit as they work to survive and thrive the harshness of the world. And really, it is understandable as to why those thoughts and images come to mind, because that really is the standard formula for nature documentaries and truth be told, there is nothing wrong with that. For said formula has brought about some moving stories for certain, the kind that have outright taken our breath away throughout the years. But while this formula does wonders for our eyes and our minds (since we do learn plenty about our world by way of these visual feasts), there is one inherent flaw when it comes to documentaries about the wild. In that, they tend to gloss over the tinier animals in the world in favor of the ones we know and love and that’s understandable as well. Because there is only so much airtime to go around and it is decidedly easier to track down an elephant over an ant, so it is sensible to make the common ones the overall focus of these shows. But it just so happens that AppleTV+ decided that the time has come to take a look at the tiny creatures that roam our world and give them the same attention as their giant counterparts by way of the brand-new series, Tiny World. Which is a storytelling decision that quite frankly, leads to a lot of cute. Because the little buggers that are featured in ‘Savannah’ are downright precious since well, they’re tiny. But all cute aside, it doesn’t take long for one to realize that we are going to be in for quite the learning experience since we discover some incredible things about the tiny creatures that inhabit this vast and gorgeous landscape. Take the Elephant Shrew for instance, which is a fast and focused little rodent, that makes use of a network of pathways to feed on a consistent basis, and these paths are so important to this tiny bean that it will clean the network as needed and this little floof wasn’t the only one that made proper use of its environment. Because the dwarf mongoose is all about using available shelter, and they tend to flock to termite mounds in order to enjoy a little comfort and safety from the elements and predators for that matter as well. But what truly made the mongoose’s story so incredibly fascinating, is the sheer fact that it works in conjunction with birds in order to find food and that was something quite unexpected for certain. Because more often than not, it is every creature for itself in the wild. But clearly, the little ones understand they’re at a slight disadvantage and teaming up proves useful for everyone involved and it offers up more opportunities. And speaking of opportunities, we were also witness to a lot of tiny animals that a made a point to take advantage of every single one that came their way. Which is why so many birds and lizards and everything in between made a point to just go for a meal when it presented themselves. Since they clearly seemed to understand that hesitation would let opportunity slip away and it was just delightful to see all these wonderful and tiny creatures succeed at surviving in a harsh environment, despite their size. If anything, this was simply a phenomenal opening chapter to this unique and dynamic documentary. For the camera teams that undoubtedly worked their fingers to the bone to bring us this footage, captured some stunning imagery, the kind that rivals stories about the big animals and in the end, all of these elements (and Paul Rudd’s phenomenal narration) definitely provide you with a fresh and exciting experience. One that leaves you eager to see what other fascinating facts and sights and sounds await us, as we continue our journey through this tiny world. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains some minor spoilers for the series premiere of ‘Soulmates’. There are a great many things that we want out of life. For instance, we all want to make sure we find the right career path. So that we are content in how we spend most of our days, and it would be equally as wonderful if we were quite successful in the career field that we’ve chosen. That way, we can enjoy some financial success and security along the way, which will in turn allow for us to enjoy quality downtime where we can pursue hobbies and interests that further feeds the soul and the mind. But while those are important elements to pursue in life, since they will, in fact, bring us peace and satisfaction, there is one thing that we desire above all else. In that, it would be wonderful to find someone to love and settle down with for the rest of our days. Because there is a part of us that yearns for a connection and we are eager to create and share memories with someone that makes the heart flutter. And the thought of having a partner that will stand with us through thick and thin and knows us inside and out and connects with us on the deepest possible level, motivates us to get out there and find them and well… that’s oddly easier said than done. Because people are unique and quirky and finding someone that outright vibes with us on a fundamental level is no easy task. But what if it was? What if we could quickly discover the identity of our soulmate in a matter of seconds? Would we gravitate to that person without question and just accept them as our end all, be all, person in life? Well as it turns out, those very questions just so happen to serve as the foundation for the brand-new series, Soulmates. For in this particular saga, science has discovered a way to identify an individual's soulmate on a genetic level, changing the game of romance as we know it forever. Which is a premise that makes it seem as though this series is immediately going to be about the wonder of finding true love and the joy and peace that comes with that. But instead, the series premiere of this dynamic new show, ‘Watershed’, opts to take this incredible discovery in a unique and different direction. By instead exploring how such a scientific discovery could in fact… cause more harm than good. Something that is accomplished by introducing us to a loving couple named Nikki and Franklin, who seem to have it all. After all, they’ve been happily married for years now, they’ve got a couple of kids, and despite a few struggles here and there, they get by just fine in life. But as their friends and family take ‘The Test’ and learn who their soulmate is and find perfect fulfillment, they begin to wonder if they are if they are right for one another, and that particular line of thinking causes nothing but strife for this couple and really, their struggle is where this story shines. Because it transforms this particular tale into a fascinating examination on the external elements that can cause a relationship to fail. Which in this instance is a lack of communication and celebration. Because both Nikki and Franklin spend so much time playing 'what if?', that they forget to appreciate one another and what they have, since they genuinely have a healthy and wonderful marriage. And to make matters worse, they also close off from one another, rather than taking the time to openly address their problems and concerns, which only exacerbates their worries. But while that makes for some quality drama and some powerful moments for certain, it is the underlying commentary about love that is present in this tale that makes it so worth our while. For in many ways, this particular story is quick to point out that modern society has some unrealistic expectations when it comes to love. For we are obsessed with finding a person that we will never fight with, and will understand and support our every endeavor and drop everything to be there for us and well… that’s nothing more than a fantasy. Because it simply isn’t possible to find those all of things in a person and having someone who lines up with your every wish and desire isn’t healthy either, since that creates a status quo for us, the kind that doesn’t allow for us to grow. Plus, this story also correctly points out that love is work, and that in order to maintain a healthy and stable relationship we have to work at it and keep the barriers and influences that Nikki and Franklin run into here, out of our lives, or we’ll end up in a sour place. Yet at this point, you've likely noticed that we haven't discussed whether or not these two make it as a couple or if they turn to 'The Test' because of their concerns and there is good reason for keeping that out of this recap. Because you need to see this series premiere and experience their struggles first hand. For they are that powerful and that poignant and what truly makes this opening chapter so special, is that truly sets the stage for what is going to be a supremely unique series. One that is going to shatter every trope and illusion that we’ve come to believe about the nature of love and replace them with some powerful lessons on what love really looks like in our modern world, and what exactly goes into creating a healthy relationship that provides fulfillment for all parties involved. Which means that we are going to be in for some powerful storytelling for certain. The kind that will move us and fascinate us and outright shock us as we dive into a world where the wonder of love is now replaced with a simple test and some heavy expectations. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 2805 of ‘Top Gear’. When one thinks of taking a road trip, a great many things come to mind. Obviously, there’s the wonder and excitement that comes with hitting the open road, simply because the world has some incredible views to offer while you’re on the highway. But while sightseeing is always nice, you also want to reach your destination in an efficient and cost-effective manner, which is why we plan our road trips to a tee. So that we know where our hard-earned cash is going and how much time we will have to look at the Ball of Mud that got five stars on Yelp. But what if cost and time weren’t a concern? What if we could just load up a classy car of our choosing and hit the open road? Would one pick a luxury car for the journey? Or an electric ride? Obviously, it’s up to you. But if you ask the hosts of Top Gear, your best bet is an exotic European sports car. Because nothing says relaxing like a top tier sports car and it just so happens that last night’s episode of this magnificent series, took the time to explore what kind of sports car would be the best one to take on an extended road trip. And as is tradition on this particular series, Freddie and Chris and Paddy, made some supremely unique selections for this particular challenge. But it sure didn’t seem as though that was going to be the case at first. Because after Chris introduced us to his Porsche 911 Carrera S, Freddie surprised us with a sensible choice this time around. Since he decided he was going to ride in the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. But Paddy is the man who brought about the combo breaker in this instance, since he rolled up in the Ferrari Portofino. A car that sparked quite the debate, since it was hard to truly categorize his ride as a sports car. Which meant that the only way to prove that Paddy made the right choice, was to put the Portofino (and his Italian ‘accent’) to the test and well, the raw acceleration test provided Paddy with some outright hope that he was going to win again since he smoked the other two cars. But the drag race and the final racetrack challenge put Paddy behind. Because the Porche left everyone in the dust in said drag race and Chris was quite resourceful when it comes to the final challenge and in the end, it was Chris that outright won the day. Because he knocked two of the three challenges out of the park and really it was the final challenge that brought about the real entertainment in this tale. Because it was just an outright treat to see Chris and Paddy figure out how to work with racing legends and it was equally as magnificent to see Freddie get the Stig to open up. But while we know now that a Porsche is the way to go for the ultimate road trip, there was still a Supercar Spotlight waiting in the wings for us to enjoy and boy did Chris pick quite the doozy for this one. Because this week’s choice was the Volkswagen I.D. R, and if you haven’t a clue what kind of car this is, you’re not alone. For this particular ride was created to be the first ever electric F-1 style racer and holy cow, was this car as slick as they come. Because it is just pure speed through and through and can make it around a racetrack in about a minute and a half no problem. If anything, it’s only knock, is that it burns through power. For Chris was only able to go twelve miles before needing a much-needed charge and while this car isn’t available for purchase, it was definitely worth spotlighting since it really is a technical marvel, and a hint of things to come. In the end, this was just another fun episode. One that did a fine job of playing ‘what if?’ with the audience, since few of us are actually going to buy a Porsche 911. But you can never go wrong with living vicariously through others and we most certainly did that here in a supremely satisfying manner. And to top it off, the fun was also extended to this week’s celebrity segment as well. Since YouTube star KSI was able to play a unique game of penalty kicks with Paddy, and get into a punching match with Freddie and he also offered up some great commentary when going around the track in some very wet conditions and all of these elements helped the audience to just smile for an hour or so and that’s a wonderful thing. Because we can all use a little joy right now, and it’s delightful to know that the Top Gear team is making that a priority in season 28. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four ‘Tehran’. When we last settled in to discuss the phenomenal new AppleTV+ series, Tehran, we closed out our recap on an ominous note. For ‘Yasamin’s Girl’ ended with Tamar surrounded by an angry group of people, led by her cousin, and it certainly did not look as though anyone wanted to have a simple chat about what happened earlier in the day. Which meant that we were all left wondering, as to whether or not Tamar would find a peaceful resolution to this tense standoff, or if she was going to have to rely upon her training as a Mossad agent to get out of this mess, and potentially expose her true identity in the process. And it just so happens that the next episode in this fascinating tale, wasted no time in answering that particular question. For ‘Shakira and Sickboy’ picked up immediately where we left off, allowing for us to bear witness to a hybrid answer to that all-important question. Because Tamar did indeed throw down and fight when necessary, even going so far as to break her cousin’s arm and drop one of her friends, all in the hopes of getting this group to back down, quickly. But the other fighters present were eager for revenge and quickly overpowered Tamar, and the only thing that saved her from being beaten within an inch of her life was a witness. And once Tamar was able to stumble away in great pain, she quickly made her way to Sickboy’s place to find refuge and an opportunity to heal from her sudden and ugly wounds, and thankfully he was receptive to her arrival and even took the time to tend to her cuts and bruises. But while that made it seem as tough this story was going to remain in tender territory, shaking up the narrative once again, that simply wasn’t the case. Instead this episode went to some intense territory. For while Tamar recovered from her fight, Faraz went on quite the rampage. For he was determined to find the spy that snuck into his country and that led him to perform some brutal interrogations. The kind that left Tabrizi sitting in his own filth while he watched people that mattered to him suffer. And this quest for ‘justice’ also brought about some serious fractures in Tamar’s family. For her aunt went under the microscope and opened up about her connection to Tamar, after that annoying cousin spilled the beans to the IRGC about everything. But while Faraz was able to finally uncover Tamar's true identity, this information served him little purpose. For her whereabouts remained a mystery and that worked in her favor, for certain. Because it allowed for Tamar to operate in silence when she was feeling better, so that she could secure a clean passport for Sickboy. All so that he could help her escape the country, and despite a few close calls with the IRGC, she was able to get her hands on what he needed and keep her cover intact when Sickboy started asking too many questions. If anything, it truly seemed as though Tamar’s harrowing journey was about to come to a close, since she finally had a ticket to Israel and a passport that would get her through customs. But an off the cuff suggestion from Sickboy, one involving another opportunity to gain access to the electrical grid awakened something within her. And in the closing moments of this story she opted to stay behind after all. In order to complete the mission and head home a hero. In the end, this was simply another quality tale through and through. Because not only did it allow for Tamar to finally show of her skills as a spy, it also helped to establish just how difficult her mission is going to be going forward. Because Faraz is simply relentless, and he leaves no stone unturned in his quest to accomplish his goals and the longer she stays in Iran, the better the odds that Faraz will find her. Which means that all we can hope for at this point, is that she’s able to get the job done in a hurry and get home without a care in the world. But the harsh reality of the matter is, that is likely going to be easier said than done. For Faraz is closing in and his desire to capture her is only going to lead to more heart-pounding moments as Tamar works to complete her mission at last. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtCaution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Five of ‘Long Way Up’. The road trip is something that we tend to romanticize and understandably so. Because there are few things in this world that offer the outright peace and clarity that one finds when they’re just cruising on the open road. But while there is nothing wrong with falling in love with what the road trip has to offer and making an effort to take part in them as often as possible; one can never forget to be completely prepared for the unexpected when one hits the road. Because the world can be a wild place and no amount of planning can ready a trip for the chaos of the universe, and this is relevant to today’s conversation, simply because the unexpected is something that popped up often in the next episode of Long Way Up. Because ‘Atacama Desert Into Bolivia’ saw Ewan McGregor and his best buddy Charley Boorman enter some seriously harsh terrain in this tale. For this leg of the journey was quite literally taking them to new heights, since they were heading high into the mountains and well, the unexpected was all they could expect at this point. Because charging stations were rare in this no man’s land and the weather was going to be rough for certain. Which meant that improvisation was the name of the game in this tale, in order to keep the bikes going at their absolute peak, and thanks to some serious teamwork from everyone on this journey, the boys were able to get maximum charge and mileage from their bikes and reach their respective destination in the mountains no problem. But alas, while that was one particular win against mother nature and the chaos, she sends our way, there were still more unexpected challenges for the lads to face as the journey continued along. Because they consistently ran into roads that offered up no pavement, and that meant the only way to safely traverse this majestic and beautiful part of the world was to take it nice and slow, and while that definitely helped to keep this dynamic duo safe for the most part (because there were a few spills), it absolutely slowed them down. Creating another dilemma at the end of this tale, wherein the team had to decide as to whether or not to stop riding in the dark and stop for the night or press on. And as it turns out, half the team decided to call it a day while the others kept hauling to their intended destination and that decision may prove to be disastrous. Since one of the trucks hit a dog in the darkness. But while the rough spots in this tale and that ending, make this episode seem as though it was mired in darkness, there were some bright spots to be found in this tale after all. Because that train ride at the top of the mountain was something that was quite breathtaking, thanks to the incredible views it provided us with, and it was equally as cool to see Ewan watch a movie he was in, with a group of people in a store and take the time to pose for photographs and offer autographs after it ended. Because that was just super kind. And of course, the moments of peace in between the chaos were simply wonderful and calming and you can never go wrong with just kicking back and taking in the wonder of the countryside. In the end though, this particular episode makes it quite clear that this is a journey that is going to be filled with all kinds of ups and down and that’s actually a wonderful thing. Because it means the audience is being immersed in something real and powerful and relatable, quite frankly. For we’ve all run into surprise weather conditions that make our trip a pain in the rear and we’ve also dealt with surprises on the road that force us to change our plans on a moment’s notice and well, it’s just wonderful to experience a journey this visceral and familiar and truly, we will all be counting down the minutes until next Friday’s episode. So, we can find out if everyone involved in that collision is okay and to see how Ewan and Charley overcome whatever new obstacles await them, as they continue their long and winding journey north. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season one finale of ‘Ted Lasso’. When it comes to sports themed stories, there is no greater moment for the audience, than when the big game arrives. Because that means, this is it, this is where all the lessons and struggles and strife that the characters have been going through are about to be resolved. And they’ll solve their problems right there on the field, as they give it their all for one shot at glory and of course, they will teach us something special in the process and well, it just so happens that the season one finale of Ted Lasso features that all-important moment. For ‘The Hope That Kills You’ saw Man City come to AFC Richmond for the last game of the season and well, everything was on the line in this particular tale. Because a loss here, would push AFC Richmond to relegation in a lower league, and it would likely mean the end of Ted Lasso’s incredible journey across the pond. Which meant that Ted needed to figure out a way to pull out one hell of a win and that harsh reality, along with a quality chat with Rebecca, motivated him to get quite creative with the playbook and he instructed Coach Beard and the newly promoted Coach Nate to come up with every damn trick play in the book. All in the hopes of catching Man City completely off guard, which might give them a shot at walking away with the biggest win of Ted’s young career and this particularly sneaky plan, seemed as though it might actually work. For the team loved the concept, since it seemed fun and dynamic and a wonderful change of pace and they were quick to embrace these trick plays in practice. But while that alone would have made for a wonderful build up to the final match of the season, Jamie Tartt provided the squad with some extra incentive in beating Man City. Because he was talking trash about his former team and how they weren’t a proper football club and everyone on the squad really did take that to heart and understood completely that beating Jamie and his new squad would give them something far more important than security in their current league. For it would give them bragging rights over a former teammate that didn’t believe in them, and that, can do wonders for a person’s soul. If anything, this buildup to the big match was quite epic to say the least, and it was really the first time that this series felt akin to a traditional sports story, and the match in question only reinforced that particular vibe. Because AFC Richmond vs. Manchester City F.C. featured every trope and cliché you could ask for. For there was sacrifice from an aging hero present, since Roy Kent may have ended his career to stop Jamie from securing the win, and the young guys stepped up to the plate and accomplished wonders and Ted’s wild plan to go with trick plays worked and brought them within inches of exactly what they needed to avoid relegation. And that’s when the story took quite the stunning turn. For the in the closing minutes of extended time, Jamie Tartt did what he does best; and scored a game winning goal. Which was a devastating twist to watch at first. Because this was supposed to be Ted’s moment, where he finally proved to the entire soccer world and himself for that matter, that he was the right man for this job and that he could achieve anything. But as it turns out, this heartbreaking loss was all part of a master plan storytelling wise, one that was designed to allow for this series to do what it does best. Because not winning the big game and being relegated to a lesser league, serves as the perfect way to explore the fact that sometimes in life… we are going to fail. And when we do, how we respond to said failure is paramount. Because we can either surround ourselves in the sour emotions of that moment, or we can see this is a grand opportunity to learn from our mistakes so we don’t repeat them again, and who knows, perhaps there will come a day where we get another opportunity to straighten out the moment that caught us at our worst. Which is a lesson that Ted Lasso is going to learn in season two of this magnificent series. Because Rebecca opted to retain him as head coach of AFC Richmond, and she refused to even consider his resignation. For this is his time to learn from his mistakes and figure out how to bring this team back to glory and that is an inspiring way to end this incredible first season. Because not only did this finale acknowledge that failure is something that we need to accept and embrace in life, we should be excited about the opportunity to recover from it, and that’s just a magnificent lesson to embed here and it leaves one eager to start season two right now. Because how can we go wrong with a new season of storytelling that is clearly going to explore how we grow stronger from failure? But while we wait for that journey to get underway, we can instead revisit and reflect upon this marvelous first season as often as possible. Because year one was truly something special, since it provided us with so many laughs and so many wonderful lessons and it just comforting to know that when we are down and need a pick me up, we can pop right back into Ted's world and be reminded to always believe in ourselves and embrace the power of hope, regardless of the odds. Until next season. |
