Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Three of ‘Soulmates’. What’s truly fascinating about the concept of love, is the simplistic structure that it resides within. Because our outright goal in life, is to find a special someone that we connect with on a supremely fundamental level and hold onto them for the rest of our natural lives by way of marriage or commitment to them and no one else, and that’s it. That really all there is to love, in theory, and it is a concept that we have embraced for generations on end, and that is likely the structure that our children’s children will use down the line. But while this indeed a concept that works for so many, as is often the case, there are exceptions to the rule. Because for some people, the thought of loving only one person for the rest of their life, is a horrifying one for certain. For these are the folks that see love as something that needs to be shared with as many people as possible, which in turn motivates them to seek out more than one love, in order to explore and experience everything that romance and life have to offer. Which is a concept that seems foreign to so many since they are used to the norm, but polyamory exists and is practiced often in our modern world and it just so happens that this unique outlook upon love serves as the focal point for the next episode of Soulmates. Something that ‘Little Adventures’ explores, by introducing us to a married couple named Adam and Libby, who believe they have figured out the true secret to a happy and sustainable relationship. In that, having an open relationship, keeps things interesting while allowing for Adam and Libby to focus upon what truly binds them, and it seems as though this is working like a charm for them. Because they are happy and content and without a care in the world. That is until quite the surprise drops into their laps. For Libby took the Test a few years back and forgot about it. But the time has come for it to rear its powerful head. For her match has arrived and despite her best efforts to keep Miranda at her side as a friend, the draw of her is quite powerful. Prompting Libby to ask a question that many have pondered upon over the years, in that, is it possible to only love one person? Which is a plot that quite frankly, makes this the most dynamic and fascinating episode of this series to date and that is saying a lot, since the prior two tales dive into some powerful notions for certain. But this one, presents to the audience a romantic concept that is still taboo and uncomfortable in modern America, since so many view polyamory as an aberration. For tradition says we can only love one person and one person alone. But the people that practice this style of love, find something special within its framework and that’s really what makes this episode so incredibly fascinating. Because this is perhaps the first real mainstream breakdown of polyamory and this story leaves no stone unturned in its examination of this lifestyle. For we come to learn that for Libby, and those who practice this particular lifestyle, don’t indulge in it to simply see some weekend action before returning home to their spouse for some sense of stability. It’s about a supremely unique type of fulfillment. One where multiple partners offer up something special to the person in question, as evidenced by Libby’s two lovers in this tale. For Adam indulges the free spirit within her, which allows for her to feel unshackled and unrestricted in life, as though she can achieve anything. Whereas Miranda grounds Libby and gives her focus and direction and being able to find what she needs from the two of them, does wonders for her mental health and her journey really does educate the audience on a lifestyle that few of us understand. But what’s truly impressive about this particular tale, is that it doesn’t insult polyamory in the slightest. It simply presents it as it is and answers the question that Libby asks in a unique and refined manner. In that, for some people, no, one person is not enough. But for most, it is, and there is nothing wrong with choosing either route, as long as you are happy with the path you’re walking upon. Which is a wonderful message to send across to the audience. Because there’s simply no need for judgment when it comes to one's romantic lifestyle in this day and age, for love is love and that’s really all there is to it. And now that this particular exploration has come to a close, it should be interesting to see what other unique topics in regard to love, this series is going to tackle as this fascinating season rolls along. Until next time.

Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for season 29 premiere of ‘Top Gear’. Perks are a big reason as to why we take certain jobs. Simply because it is quite enjoyable to enjoy a little something extra at our day gig and truth be told, seeing our employer go above and beyond in keeping us comfortable and happy at work… makes us feel as though we made the right choice, career wise. But while perks are always a joy, sometimes they lack in quality since there is only so much money to go around and that’s okay. Because at least the employer is making an outright effort to show its employees that they are valued when they come to work, and that’s a rarity in this day and age. But of the many perks out there, there is only one that we truly love above all else, and fuss over when it comes to features and cost, and that would be… the company car. Because there really is something quite delightful and outright exhilarating about being provided with a vehicle by our employer and while we sometimes lament the lack of features available in that ride because… budget, we’re still happy to have it. But that lamentation is quick to return when the car gives us a little trouble, and it often leads to our imagination pondering upon what it would be like to drive a company car that wasn’t tied to a limited budget, and really, all of this is relevant to our discussion today, simply because the folks at Top Gear decided it was high time to examine that day dream. For the season 29 premiere of this magnificent show, took the time to examine what kind of high-end vehicle would serve as the finest company car out there, in the most unique and fun ways imaginable of course. Such as having a fierce competition in these the magical rides, the kind that would put these vehicles to all kinds of work-related tests. But before the battle for the finest company car could get underway, Chris and Paddy and Freddie had to select which ride they were going to spend the next twenty-four hours inside, because that was part of the deal and well, it took Chris and Freddie a mere matter of seconds to select the BMW Series 3 and Volvo S60 respectively. Leaving the Tesla Model 3 for Paddy to cruise about in and once the lads got comfortable in their new rides, they… had to wait for a little while for the competition in question to be ready. So, during their downtime; they got a tour of Paddy’s hometown and came to learn all kinds of goodies about Paddy’s past, and once the tour was over… the battle got underway. One that featured, a team building exercise/fastest time race, a chance to see which car could make it to the top of a parking garage the fastest, who could last the night sleeping in their company car, and the grossest food challenge possible and that made… for one delightful and hilarious adventure with our hosts. Because the first race not only exposed Freddie in every way you can think of, he also crashed his ride into the side of the racetrack. Plus, Paddy flat out cheated in the next to last challenge. Because he purposefully chose a soccer stadium with a hotel attached so he could sneak out of his car in the middle of the night to enjoy a little comfort. And whatever fish the producers wanted these guys to eat… was clearly disgusting and foul and all of these moments, allowed for some serious laughs to take place. Because this one was all about the fun and focusing so heavily on this competition, allowed for the hour to just fly by. Plus, this episode also managed to surprise us. Because normally, there’s a break in the competition to allow for the Supercar Spotlight and for a celebrity guest to swing by. But this time around it was all about the competition and honestly, that’s just fine. For this change to the format really didn’t lessen the experience in the slightest since it put a grand smile on your face, and really, one has to wonder if this change to the format is going to stick around for the rest of the season. Because it really did make for a refreshing episode, one that oddly allowed for us to get to know the lads a little better, since we now know what kind of underwear Freddie Flintoff prefers and where there is a good place to eat in Bolton. But what matters most in regard to this premiere, is that entrepreneurs are now fully aware of the fact that the Tesla Model 3 or the BMW 3 Series, make for the perfect company car. Since they offer comfort and style to folks on the road and hopefully this episode motivates a few CEO's and CFO's to purchase a fleet of those cars for their teams, because how awesome would that be? In the end however, this was just great way to kick off a new season of the series and hopefully this level of fun continues along as season 29 rolls along. Because this episode really was a blast and it definitely leaves one eager to tune in next week to enjoy more smiles and adventures with one delightful crew. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the seventh episode of ‘Long Way Up’. If there is one universal truth that we can apply to just about everything in life, it would have to be; that tough times never last. Because regardless of what kinds of problems or frustrations you are facing, eventually the issue is resolved and the aggravation fades away, only to be replaced with good times and joy, and this is definitely something that applies to the road trip as well. Because sometimes a voyage on the highways gets to be quite the pain in the rear, to the point where you wonder why you set out in the first place. But eventually, the majesty of the road and the world eventually take hold and all you feel is that aforementioned joy and it just so happens, that the brighter side of the road trip takes the center stage in the next episode of Long Way Up. Because ‘Peru’ saw the rough roads and the difficult challenges that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman and the ‘LWU’ team have faced thus far, disappear. Which allowed for all kinds of wonders to take place in this tale. For not only were the lads able to just enjoy the open road for a change and all the sights and sounds that it has to offer, they were also able to take part in the finest aspect of hitting the road. Which is, making the time to visit unique landmarks or places that you’ve always wanted to see in person, and that brought about some special moments for certain. For it turns out that Ewan has always wanted to visit Machu Picchu, ever since he was a boy, in fact. And since the trip was going so smoothly, that afforded Ewan and the team the incredible amount of time they needed to make this particular dream a reality. Which may sound like an overly dramatic thing to say, since one would think that a stop is a stop, the kind where you get in and get out and snap some pictures while you’re there. But Machu Picchu is actually quite the special place. One that requires a train ride up the mountain where it resides and a crack of dawn push to get inside, since only 2500 people a day are allowed in. But clearly, all that effort is worth it. Because this was simply a breathtaking place to visit. For it features magnificent and peaceful views and plenty of incredible history. But while it was amazing to take in the sheer beauty of this unique and isolated place, the real payoff for the audience in regard to this part of the episode, was Ewan’s reaction to fulfilling a lifelong dream. Because he was filled with utter joy during this visit and it was quite nice to share in that moment of pure happiness. Yet while we could have spent the entire hour with Ewan and Charley in this magical place and not thought twice about it, there was more to explore in regard to Peru, and once we moved on from Machu Picchu, we were able to learn some fascinating facts about this place. Such as how preservation efforts in regard to the Amazon, are being extended to the locals that live in this forest. Because unfortunately, companies that want their land for logging, offer them ridiculous sums to money to move them out, and they are quick to accept it, in order to make ends meet. But thankfully, the efforts in question involve education and finding these folks sustainable work and income, so that they have no reason to sell, and judging from what we saw here... these efforts are working. Plus, we were able to spend quality time with these unique and wonderful people and learn about how they live and that’s always worthwhile. But despite the fact that this episode offered up a great deal of beautiful and inspiring moments and the smoothest leg of the journey to date, not everything was rosy in Peru. For when the lads reached the border of this magical place, we were able to learn about a humanitarian crisis currently happening in Peru. In that, it is flooded with refugees from Venezuela, who are waiting for either passage to another country or a chance to start over in Peru and it was just quite powerful to learn about the plight of these refugees, and this is a segment that definitely gives one pause. But thankfully, these fine folks have shelter and food at these camps and hopefully they will get the second chance they so deserve. If anything, all of these elements made for one powerful episode. Because this particular tale really did celebrate the true wonder of the road trip. For hitting the road is and will forever be about learning and enjoying new experiences and that’s exactly what happened here. Since we learned so much about the people of Peru and Ewan McGregor for that matter as well. For he really opened up to the audience in this tale and it was quite fascinating to really see him in the raw in this manner and well, it is best we bask in the good vibes that this leg of the trip sent our way for as long as we can. Because this particular tale ends on a bit of an ominous note, since the refugee camp and the border crossing imply that a tough and dangerous leg of the journey awaits them in next week’s episode, and it should be interesting to see what kinds of challenges Ewan and Charley and the team are going to encounter in Ecuador. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the sixth episode of ‘Tehran’. Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve been treated to quite the refreshing spy story by way of the AppleTV+ series, Tehran. For not only has this series offered up a delightful cat and mouse game, one where the villain and the hero have yet to even cross paths, it has also offered up a supremely unconventional story. One that has quite frankly, done the ‘unthinkable’ storytelling wise, by placing our hero in the shadows for a better part of this tale. Because Tamar has spent most of this season in hiding, and while that’s allowed for us to get to know who she is as a person, it has kept her skills as a Mossad out of the spotlight. But it would seem that keeping that hidden was part of a grandiose plan, one designed to eventually help us understand that being a spy is a job like any other, and that a good person who takes this gig will do what they must in order to get the job done. Which is precisely what happened in ‘The Engineer’. Because she and Milad were unfortunately getting nowhere with the man that was supposed to get them into the power station, and Karim was once again causing all kinds of trouble and that meant that Tamar needed to unleash her training and her skill set as a spy to get this mission moving, and that led to all kinds of chilling and stunning moments. Such as Karim’s end, since he threatened her life, and one incredibly cold and impactful gambit in order to gain access to the power station. For in order to get what she wanted in as smooth a manner as possible, Tamar set up a few cameras and a delightful offering of drugs that she knew the engineer would take advantage of, and of course he did. And the instant he offered a negative answer in regard to granting them access, she revealed the footage the cameras had taken, and made quite the promise to him. In that, if he continued to defy her wishes, that video would be released to his boss in a matter of minutes. Giving him no choice but to agree to her terms and give her the in, she so desperately desires and well, this was quite stunning to watch when all is said and done. For it taught us that Tamar is one talented spy, one that will throw down as go the extra mile to get her mission accomplished in a cold and calculated and unemotional manner as well. Because she was also quick to turn her back on Milad, despite the feelings they share for one another. But while it was quite incredible to finally see Tamar show us exactly what she can accomplish when the chips are down and she has a little time to think and plan accordingly, we would be remiss to not discuss Faraz’s journey in this tale. Because he paid the price dearly for Tabrizi’s death, since he was suspended from his daily duties, something that did not sit well with him in the slightest. Because this was a giant blow to his ego, and to make matters worse, there was a fair chance he would never see his wife again since everything had to gone to hell at this point. Which more or less motivated Faraz to take matters into his own hands and lay a trap for Tamar, one where her Aunt placed a call to her father to arrange a meeting in Turkey. All so Faraz could get his hands on his own hostage and have a little bit of leverage for a change. A move that will of course lead to trouble since it stands the chance of compromising Tamar, but that’s likely what Faraz wants. He wants her to make a grand mistake so his forces can swoop in and finally get their hands upon her. Restoring the IRGC’s faith in him and getting him a much-needed win. Provided of course, the gambit works. Because Tamar has proved herself to be as cold as ice in order to advance the mission, which means that the next episode of this tale is likely going to be a good old-fashioned battle of wills. But in the here and the now, it is best we celebrate one straightforward and intense tale. One that quite frankly, felt akin to a classic spy story. Which once again proves that this series is extremely versatile since it can be what it wants on a moment’s notice and truly, the wait until next week’s episode is going to be another excruciating one. Simply because this episode really has set up quite the epic showdown between Faraz and Tamar and we are all eager to see which one of them, is going to blink first. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season three premiere of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’. If there is one particular belief that all of mankind shares, it would have to be that what we have as a society, is going to endure forever. Because what our kind has worked so hard to build and maintain has merit and value and it makes perfect sense that future generations would be eager to keep the status quo going and keep all that we have built and perfected, standing for ages on end. But the fact of the matter is, nothing lasts forever, and a change in tastes and beliefs can bring about an incredible transformation to a society and its structure and of course… nature and the universe and the outright chaos that comes with them, can shatter everything we’ve built in a matter of minutes. But while most of us prefer to not think about what our world would look like if everything, we’ve worked so hard to build disappeared before our eyes, it is a scenario that storytellers are keen to explore. Simply because diving into such a wild and unsettling concept allows for the reader or the viewer to properly understand and appreciate what we currently have and why it is in fact, so important to maintain its existence. And it just so happens that a storied franchise has decided that after fifty-plus years of existence, the time has come to tackle this incredible topic in a universe where such a reality seems downright impossible. A decision that made the third season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery a bold one to say the least, since it features… a future where the United Federation of Planets; is fractured and no longer the driving force of peace and inspiration in the galaxy. Which is a tough sentence to type, let alone read. But it is in fact, the harsh reality featured in ‘That Hope Is You, Part 1’, one that Commander Michael Burnham doesn’t quite learn about right away. For shortly after arriving in the year 3188, following the events of ‘Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2’, it seems as though she’s arrived safely in a new place without a worry in the universe. But a rough encounter with a courier named Book reveals to her that some 120 years ago, the galaxy went through a cataclysmic change known as ‘The Burn’. And in this burn, a vast majority of Dilthium just… burned up or exploded and since that is in fact the primary element that drives warp technology in the galaxy, the power and the majesty of the United Federation of Planets more or less disappeared, leaving the people of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants in utter chaos. To the point where Andorians and Orions are now working together to maintain some kind of economy, one that Book takes part in and it was simply fascinating to see a universe that once was held together under notions of peace and unity and progress be reduced to petty crime and dark intentions. For everywhere we went with Book and Burnham revealed strife and struggle and an ‘every being for itself’ mentality, and that was sobering to say the least. But thankfully, there were still some bright spots to be found in the Milky Way Galaxy. For it turns out that the cavalier and aloof nature that Book exhibited toward Burnham and others was designed to keep a cover going. Because in reality, he’s a good man trying to do good things in a galaxy filled to the brim with fear and that particular revelation, along with the ending of this tale, keeps hope alive that the future might still be an optimistic and wonderful place after all. For it turns out, that there are still people who believe in Starfleet and the Federation and what it stands for, a reality that was discovered when Burnham asked Book for quite the favor. One that involved finding a place that could scan for the location of the U.S.S. Discovery, since at this point in time it was still missing in action. And that brought them to a remote and ancient Federation outpost, one that was in great disrepair but still functional in regard to its scanners. And while it didn’t yield any results when it comes to the NCC-1031’s location, the man who served at this station with unwavering dedication, made it clear that all the ideals that this once great organization stands for, are still alive in the hearts of a few, and that perhaps if that message was able to spread; the galaxy might believe in something more again and that really is a powerful and inspiring way to end one of the boldest Star Trek episodes to ever air. Because the Federation has seemed invincible and untouchable in regard to notions of collapse. So, to see it barely operating here and outright irrelevant was shocking to say the least. But it does go to show that our world and what it stands for can disappear on a moment’s notice, and that it is up to better angels and the hearts and minds of those that understand what we have and what it is worth… to keep it alive and rebuild it as necessary. Which means that season three of Discovery is likely going to revolve around restoring the United Federation of Planets and making Starfleet a force for good once again, which is inspiring and beautiful on so many levels. For this bold quest will remind audiences old and new, exactly what makes the Star Trek Universe such a magnificent place for storytelling and truly, that leaves one eager to see how a ragged crew of weary and war torn officers from 930 years in the past… will be able to pull of such an incredible feat in a universe they no longer recognize. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the third episode of 'Tiny World'. Thus far, the AppleTV+ series, Tiny World, has done a phenomenal job of teaching us some important lessons about the itty-bitty critters that populate this world. Such as how we are often unaware of their existence and that they lead incredibly unique lives. For some are able to roam free without a care in the world, while others struggle mightily to get by. Which is something that is outright determined by the environment that they live within. Which leaves one to wonder, as to whether or not there is a place on our planet, where tiny creatures are able to live together on a more level playing field, where both space and size are comparable to the inhabitants. Well as it turns out, there most certainly is and the next episode of this magnificent series, ‘Island’, was happy to show us exactly where that place is. In fact, the Caribbean Islands are the perfect place for tiny creatures to thrive and live amongst their own. Simply because smaller animals can make the most use of the limited space available on an island and what's truly surprising, is that just about every small animal imaginable, lives in this tropical environment. To the point where there are even bitty avians on these islands, such as the supremely amazing, bee hummingbird. A miniscule bird that is indeed the size of a bee and what made them so unique and worth covering in this episode, is the sheer fact that we were able to see just how hard these little buggers have to work in order to survive. Because competition for food and resources are quite fierce on an island, and it takes aggressive energy and resources for birds like this to get by. But while that makes it seem as though this episode was going to offer up a lot of aggressive moments and posturing from tiny and cute little animals, that simply wasn’t the case. Because we also learned that community is a big deal when it comes island living. Something that the hermit crab was able to teach us. For these wee crustaceans actually go shell shopping with their brethren, so that everyone has the right shell on their backs, and it was just incredible to learn that crabs work together in this manner and to witness some of the sheer will and ingenuity that some island animals exhibit. Such as the tri-tri gobie. A fish that is happy to venture upstream in order to breed and the only obstacle it might run into when it comes to that plan, is that sometimes, there are rocks are in the way. But that’s oddly not a problem for this fish. Simply because, it actually knows how to climb rocks and can even scale a waterfall with its mouth and its fins, making this perhaps the toughest fish out there. However, while it was quite amazing to see these little creatures find harmony and success and everything in between, this particular episode was also quick to remind us, that the world is a tough place, one where anything can happen… as evidenced by the challenges these animals faced in this tale. Because living in the middle of the ocean, means that tropical storms are going to head your way and hurricanes for that matter as well, and sadly, that puts these animals in harm’s way and often. Especially with storm season now becoming more active than ever. Which means that we were privy to some of the natural horrors these animals face, and it was downright heartbreaking to see them lose their young to a storm or be tossed about like leaves when the winds came bearing down. But despite the hardships they faced by way of mother nature, these creatures found a way to solider on. For the crabs that got tossed further inland, dusted off their fancy new shells and made their way back toward the beach, regardless of how long it was going to take. And the bee hummingbird, which saw its chicks washed away in the storm, started over with a new nest and new eggs because that’s just what nature does. It picks up the pieces and moves forward and that is a wonderful way to end this particular tale. Because it leaves us safe in the knowledge that life will in fact, go on and thrive and well, in the end, this was just another impressive episode from this magnificent documentary. Because this series just continues to stun us with new sights and powerful lessons and thankfully this is merely the midpoint of our journey through the tiny world that lurks beneath our feet and it will be an utter delight to see what other kinds of wonders await us in the next episode of this documentary, one that takes us… down under. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the second episode of ‘Tiny World’. When we last settled in to discuss the wonder of the new AppleTV+ series, Tiny World, we were treated to some majestic moments involving the fine creatures of the Savannah. The kind that opened our eyes to a part of our world that few of us ever pay attention to, since we are way up here and those little critters are way down below. But while it was quite wonderful to learn how the tinier beings of the planet live in that gorgeous landscape, that premiere offered up quite the surprise. In that, there really weren't a whole lot of challenges for these Savannah creatures to face. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means since sometimes a documentary will break your heart when it shows us the obstacles some animals face in life. But while it was weird to not experience sour moments in a nature documentary, it does make sense as to why the elephant shrew for instance, was able to go about its day without a worry in the world. Simply because, when an animal is that teeny, and has that much space to work with, it is far more difficult to be spotted and hunted. Which leaves one to wonder, if tiny creatures are packed into closer quarters with bigger beings, would that in turn create a little strife and trouble for them? As it turns out, the answer to that question is an unfortunate yes. For the next chapter in this beautiful and delightful documentary took us into a part of our world where everyone has to live together closely in order to survive, and that made ‘Jungle’ quite the harrowing tale at times. Since it sadly featured some tough experiences for a few of the tiny critters that inhabit these lush and vibrant tropical forests; such as the strawberry dart frog. For this itty bitty, bright red frog has to deal with a lot of drama and trouble in order to see its species survive. Because their tiny eggs need at least two weeks to hatch on the floor of the jungle. Which means that the father of the family has to stand guard and fight off would be aggressors in order to keep his babies safe and the troubles for this frog don’t end there. Because in order to see their children mature into adulthood, the tadpoles need a safe space to feed and grow and well… the best place to make that happen is at the top of a tree. For up there, are leaves with wonderful pools of water, the kind that will offer nourishment and safety for a growing pollywog. But even then, danger awaits these teeny amphibians. Because in this particular tale, the tree that this cute little frog uses to keep its babies safe, collapses due to rain and age. Which sadly, leads to a helpless moment for the momma frog. Where she cannot stop a snake from devouring her tadpole when said snake discovers the final resting place of that leaf pool, and that was heartbreaking to say the least. But it just speaks to the wild nature of the jungle and the harsh reality of this environment was further hammered home by way the plight of the pygmy marmoset. A tiny species of monkey that lives in the trees as well, and the collapse of their home forced them to get creative with their food as they searched for a new place to live. Yet, while this segment of the journey did a fine job of reminding us, of how harsh living in the wild can be, it was also quick to remind us that life always finds stability after times of strife. For eventually, those monkeys found a new home and the strawberry dart frog, started over in raising its young. In the end, this was just another incredible chapter in this stunning documentary. Because once again, we were treated to breathtaking views of tiny animals that we hadn’t a clue existed, and we really did get a comprehensive and unique look at life in the jungle and how hard it is to survive here. But what matters most, is that this documentary didn’t lose sight of what it introduced in its premiere. In that, life is beautiful and to be celebrated and despite the tough moments here, this one still put a smile on our faces by finding a way to keep that theme at the forefront of this tale and truly, this documentary keeps finding new ways to leave the audience eager for more. Because we really are being immersed in a world within our world that we never knew existed and it will be quite interesting to see what other kinds of unique species await us in the next chapter of this breathtaking journey. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the second episode of 'Soulmates'. For the most part, human beings subscribe to the notion that there are consequences for our actions in life. Simply because as we grow and learn, we see causality in full effect and its impact upon us, teaches us valuable lessons, the kind we take us with everywhere we go and hopefully impart upon our children when the time is right. But you’ll likely take note of the fact that the phrase, ‘for the most part’, was used in combination with this observation and there is good reason for that. Because sometimes, people throw this particular rule out of the window depending upon the situation. For there are times, where the logical part of our brain is silenced by matters of the heart and when that happens… we simply do what we do, and consequences be damned. Especially when it comes to love. After all, there is something quite powerful about meeting someone that sends our spirits soaring. Because we know that when we meet someone that we connect with on a fundamental level, that it is truly something special. Something that we should fight tooth and nail to hold onto and that’s where ugly consequences can quickly come into play. Because sometimes, the particular person we’ve fallen for…. is downright bad for us. But the feelings they engender in our souls motivates us to press on and well, we know how that story ends. But what we don’t discuss enough when it comes to this unfortunate scenario, in either everyday talk or popular media, is the person on the other side of this equation. For they care little about the consequences of leading someone on or abusing their love and it is likely a taboo topic since it is so toxic and uncomfortable. But some people, and stories, are willing to explore the consequences that come with choosing to toy with people in matters in love, such as the AMC series Soulmates. Since last night’s episode of this show, dug into everything we’ve discussed thus far, in a sneaky and dynamic manner. Because initially, it seemed as though ‘The Lovers’ was going to be a grand exploration on whether or not we can stay true to someone we love when we find our soulmate. For we come to learn that our main character in this tale, an art professor named David Maddox; took the Soul Connex test ages ago and opted to have his results hidden in order to marry his wife and enjoy a wonderful life. Because despite their slight mismatch as a pair, they are genuinely happy with one another since they share all the same interests. So why bother with the test results? Which is why David is initially appalled when a woman named Alison Jones approaches him with the news that she has taken the test and hacked into the system to find her match, and it just so happens to be David. Which is a revelation that quite frankly haunts him to no end. For he truly wants to be the master of his own destiny and his own future, and that’s why he opted to steer clear of the test results. But eventually, the curiosity and the draw of Alison gets the better of him and that’s when this story takes quite the unexpected turn. For shortly after a night of passion between these two soulmates, David’s life becomes quite stressful. Because suddenly, Alison is exhibiting odd behavior and an old secret about David’s time at another university has suddenly returned to the forefront of his life, one that could cause him great trouble. For it turns out that, a student of David's once fell in love with him and suffered greatly when she realized she couldn't have him. Which is something that he could have prevented, but didn't. Because David makes it clear over the course of the hour, that being admired is something that means a lot to him and having that from her and not having to commit on his end, was a satisfying experience for him and that was quite the problematic decision on his part. For this 'love affair' motivated the student in question to take her own life and rather than speak to his mistakes in this matter, David opted to place blame and deflect and that will cost him everything in the end, since Alison is that young student's sister and is out for revenge. But while that makes for juicy drama and a wild ending, this story's commentary on ignorance when it comes to matters of the heart and the consequences that come out that, is what truly sticks with you. Because this particular tale really does examine the nature of toxic relationships and what motivates people to get into them or explore them and what we learn here is downright fascinating and unsettling. For in essence, this is a tale that shows us how some men, aren’t really ever interested in love. Instead they are outright obsessed with the high that being adored gives them and they’ll do whatever it takes to retain that, as evidenced by David’s actions in this tale. But what’s truly disturbing is how well this story explores how little some people care about the consequences that can come about from toying with someone’s heart. Because David worries more about what this skeleton in his closet is going to do for his career instead of the harm he caused. In fact, he cares so little about the impact of his actions that he is constantly eager to deflect and shape the narrative to make him appear to be the victim. When in fact, he is at fault. Because clearly, he set no boundaries with the woman in question. Nor did he offer any honesty about the actual nature and intent of their relationship. Instead he fed this, in order to feed his ego and satiate his need to be desired and that makes the ending of this tale a satisfying one indeed. In the end however, this really was quite the incredible episode for certain. In part because it demonstrates that this particular series is going to explore every aspect of love out there, either good or bad, and it will hold nothing back in regard to that exploration as well. Which means that we simply won’t know what to expect when we tune into future episodes, since this one did such a fine job of surprising us and that’s a wonderful thing. Because in this day and age, it is tough to be shocked by a T.V. show when so many similar stories are out there, but this one has figured out how to make that happen, and that means we are going to be in for one incredible and stunning ride as this journey continues along. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season 28 finale of ‘Top Gear’. For the most part, season finales follow a fairly specific formula. The kind that involves the resolution of a plot thread or recurring theme, so that the audience feels as though their investment time wise in a particular show, was completely worth their while. But for some shows, going that particular route is simply impossible. Because they offer up a viewing experience unlike any other, and that allows for them to surprise the audience when their respective season comes to an end and that is precisely the route that Top Gear went in closing out Season 28. Because everything about this particular finale took the audience off guard, thanks in large part to the fact that the traditional format of the series was ignored for this particular journey. For example, this is an episode that brought the Supercar Spotlight to the forefront of the tale instead of in the middle, or at the end. Which definitely takes the viewer off guard, as does seeing Paddy McGuinness lead this segment off for a change. But while such a twist was slightly disorienting, any confusion we might have had, melted away the instant Paddy sat behind the wheel of a BMW M8. Because Paddy offered up a comprehensive look at a supercar, that really isn’t all that super. In large part because it has a massive price tag for features that you can easily find in comparable cars for cheaper and having comedian Tom Allen appear in an early edition of the celebrity segment also helped to make the audience quite comfortable. Because Tom fired off some phenomenal jokes during his time on the show and really, it is a good thing that we got this stuff out of the way early. Because what came next was incredibly special. Because Chris Harris took the time to offer up a tribute to rally car legend Colin McRae. For 2020 is the 25th Anniversary of the championship title that Colin earned back in the day and well, this particular tribute offered up some beautiful moments for certain. Because it took the time to celebrate everything that happened in regard to Colin’s magical ride to a title in 1995 in a raw and honest manner. Which means that were treated to all the highs and all the lows of his journey to the top, and a powerful re-telling of what his win did for rally racing, and what he meant to his friends and family. Plus, we were also able to witness quite the incredible moment/experience for Chris. For he was able to take Colin’s winning Subaru Impreza out for a spin and what made this so special, relates to the fact that he has always viewed Colin as a personal hero and it really was quite special to see the joy on Chris’ face as he sped through the woods in his hero’s championship ride. But while it was wonderful to see a boyhood dream come to life for Chris, what would this show be without some kind of competition for the lads to take part in? And thankfully, they had a special one planned for this particular finale. Because for some time now, members from emergency services have been asking for some kind representation on the series, and what better way to make that happen, than by having a fierce competition to determine which emergency service has the fastest vehicle out there. So, the lads invited police officers and firefighters and emergency medical technicians out to the track to settle this matter, and this just made for one delightful segment. Because every team gave it their all and had fun while taking part in this little battle royale and in the end, it was the EMT crew that won the day and earned the title of ‘Fastest Emergency Service’. When all is said and done however, this really was the perfect way to end season 28. Because it really did a phenomenal job of reminding us how important the automobile is in relation to our everyday lives. Because Paddy’s segment served to reinforce the fact that we are always looking for an honest opinion about cars that we would either like to buy or dream of buying. And Chris’ tribute speaks to how racing impacts our lives. Because whether you follow rally racing or not, if you were alive in 1995, you knew about Colin McRae and of course… without cars, emergency services simply aren’t possible and all of these elements make this episode a grand celebration of the car and that’s really the essence of this series and truly, it should be interesting to see what twists and turns will await us in season 29. Because this show just keeps finding new ways to explore the wonder of the car and it is definitely safe to say that fans of this series will be counting down the minutes until the next season. So, we can all get our supercar fix and enjoy an incredible adventure with three dynamic and delightful hosts. Until next year Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Six of ‘Long Way Up’. Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve talked a lot about the nature of the road trip and its relationship to the AppleTV+ documentary series, Long Way Up, and there is good reason for that. Simply because this phenomenal show is in essence a dissection of this time honored tradition and it has done an incredible job of not only celebrating everything, we love about the road trip and why we crave them so, but it has also taken the time to remind us that sometimes they aren’t always a rosy experience. Since sadly, nature and the outright chaos that just permeates life, can make the road trip, difficult. And not shying away from that fact makes this series a refreshing one for certain and it just so happens that this particularly unfortunate aspect to the road trip is relevant to today’s discussion; since it is exactly what Ewan and Charley ran into, in this week’s leg of the journey. For ‘Bolivia’ saw the lads dealing with some seriously tough terrain and other surprises as they made their way through the Bolivian landscape and that made for one intense tale at times. But before we dig too deeply into that, we need to take a moment and revisit the cliffhanger that came about during the last episode. Because the good news is, no one was hurt in that collision. Instead the Rivian took a beating and that’s great news since that is fixable. But once we got past that particularly relieving moment, the episode wasted no time in diving into the tough stuff. Because once Ewan and Charley hit the road again, all they ran into was treacherous landscape. For there was no pavement in this part of Bolivia, just dirt and tracks and grooves and soft earth beneath their wheels and that genuinely made for some dangerous riding. Because that created the potential for a nasty spill, and concerns over Charley’s past injuries; left both Ewan and the viewer worried about his overall safety. But thankfully, he was fine in the end, and only suffered a ding to the ribs from the one time his bike went down. But Dave’s Rivian? Well that’s a whole different story. Because the hand brake was toast on that particular truck and in the midst of a daily discussion, one where Dave stepped out of the truck for a moment; it rolled backwards and came to rest atop a nasty boulder. Which meant that everyone dropped what they were doing and pitched in to get the truck rolling again and boy did it need some major repairs after it was freed, and what’s truly incredible, is that the tough times didn’t end there. Because the team was basically driving/riding at 12,000-14,000 miles above sea level on a consistent basis, and eventually that can take its toll on someone’s health if they’re not used to breathing at high altitude. And at the end of this leg of the journey, poor Taylor was once again in need of oxygen and meds to function and even Ewan was starting to feel the impact of being this high up, to the point where the doctor checked in on him, as well. But while all of these elements made for one intense tale, the kind that surprisingly put you on the edge of your seat, there were still some bright moments to be found. After all, it was quite beautiful to see Ewan and Charley join UNICEF on one of their projects, where they are working to get the indigenous people of Bolivia a quality education. The kind that allows for them to learn their indigenous language while learning others, and this led to some heartwarming sequences where Ewan and Charley got to know the children and the families involved in this program, and it was just a treat to see this learning in action and how much this opportunity means to the children involved. And we were also able to enjoy the sheer majesty of this part of the world. For the Salt Flats were a breathtaking sight and truly, La Paz is a beautiful city, one that is rich in so much culture, and these are the things that make a rough ride worth one’s while when all is said and done. Because we hit the road to learn about other places and experience everything they have to offer and being able to do that and take something away makes the moment that we run out of gas or get a flat seem insignificant for certain. But all of that aside, this was another incredible chapter in this outright fascinating journey. In large part because of the fact that Ewan and Charley and the team overcame some tough moments to reach this week’s destination and that takes guts when one considers what they were up against, and their struggle here, is one that just straight up inspires a viewer, period. Because it reminds people to never give up and push for your goals and that was an unexpected surprise to find in this particular tale. As was the fact that Ewan McGregor can play guitar and carry and tune and well… now that this leg of the journey is complete, all we can do is patiently wait for next Friday’s tale and all the wonder it is going to send our way. Until next time. |
