For a brief moment there, it really appeared as though season seven of Star Trek: The Next Generation, was going to be mired in balance. Wherein we would enjoy a few traditional episodes before the series peppered in a random, nothing to lose, final season story. As evidenced by the fact that the early parts of this season, really did offer up a lot of traditional TNG before that wild pirate story came into play. One that wrapped up, with the old fuzzy and familiar feelings we’ve come to enjoy with this show. But as it turns out… balance is simply not going to be the case in this final season. Because just like that, the series opted to dive right back into experimental storytelling right after making us as feel as comfortable as can be.
Because ‘Phantasms’ is a story that truly offered up one wild story. One that saw Lieutenant Commander Data dealing with a very unique crisis. In that, shortly after helping to install a brand-new warp core aboard the Enterprise, that simply never worked, he began to have terrible dreams. The kind that saw his coworkers mutilated or feasting on cranial fluid and each other for that matter as well. Not to mention there were three strangers always causing harm in his nightmares and at first… Data and his shipmates thought nothing of this. As though it was nothing more than a Soong program being a Soong program. But when Data began to dream during the day and was motivated to violently do something about the horrible things, he saw… the crew quickly took this seriously. In fact, for a moment there, his shipmates were concerned that something terrible was happening to Data’s electronic mind. To the point where he was confined to quarters and uncertain of his future. But thankfully, it turned out he wasn’t losing his digital mind or degrading in some form or fashion. His unique way of processing information had alerted him to a real problem aboard the ship. In that, strange inter dimensional aliens had taken root amongst the crew, and they were slowly eating the crew’s cellular structure away. And the only way to save the crew… was to bring Picard and Geordi into Data’s dreams via the holodeck. Where they learned these aliens were brought here from the new core design and with a little help from Data’s ability to transmit signals, they could be defeated… and were. All of which… made for a very different kind of episode. Because on the one hand, you have an alien of the week showcase through those parasites. Which is traditional stuff through and through. But let’s be honest… all of that is immaterial to the dreams and nightmares that Data experienced in this tale. Because some weird and eerie stuff was put on screen. Such as having Dr. Crusher drink cranial fluid from Riker’s skull and of course, there is the infamous cake scene where Data and the aliens carved up a bakery/living hybrid of Counselor Troi. Plus, those sequences were surreal and strange and eerie as well and, in many ways, this should be a failure of an episode, since it just leans so hard into horror and avant-garde elements. But it’s not. It is actually ridiculously compelling through and through, and you simply cannot turn away from Data’s nightmares and all the weird they contain. In fact, they are… uncanny in how well they reflect actual dreams, since they reflect the detachment and randomness we experience when our brains hits REM sleep, and also… the acting here is top notch. All of which makes this, a shockingly engaging episode, one that you will definitely feel a little off coming away from, but you also kind of want to watch it again. Just to make sure you properly soaked everything up in tis this story and well… it deserves a round of applause for being supremely unconventional and for shocking us with a story that shouldn’t work but does and truly… it will be interesting to see what other unique and surprising episodes await us as we warp toward the end of this magnificent series. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for the series premiere of ‘Shrinking’.
One particular aspect of modern television that is supremely fascinating, is how intimate television shows have become. Because week in and week out, we are being treated to shows that feature stories that we not only relate to, but feature keystone moments of growth in our lives. Which in turn, teaches us powerful lessons about moments that lie ahead, moments we are struggling with, or have struggled with, and that really is a supremely intimate experience for the viewer. One that makes the story far more meaningful and impactful upon their lives and well… this particular change in the world of television is showing no signs of slowing down, as evidenced by a brand-new series on Apple TV+. For Shrinking is a series that offers up a bevy of life lessons, through the lens of a man named Jimmy Laird. Who is an accomplished therapist that is going through quite the difficult time in his life. For Jimmy is one year removed from the passing of his wife and this past year… has been an incredible struggle for him. In large part because the pain is still fresh, and that’s prompted Jimmy to self-medicate outside of work and isolate from the people that matter most to him. Which has in turn, forced his daughter to spend more time with the next-door neighbor, Liz, since she has stepped in and played mother, and when we catch up with Jimmy in ‘Coin Flip’ and ‘Fortress of Solitude’, he is genuinely at his lowest. In fact, he’s so numb and so ready to leave his pain behind, that he opts to do something quite drastic at work. In that, he begins to believe that letting time and patience and baby steps do the heavy lifting in the healing process… might be nothing more than silly concepts. That should be tossed aside because of the precious nature of life and where instead… action should be taken. The kind that forces his patients to just move forward and heal on the fly and embrace the wonder and horror of the moment. A move that shocks his colleagues and his mentor, Dr. Paul Rhodes, who are now tasked with trying to figure out… what comes next when a therapist goes rogue and decides that everything, they’ve ever been taught should be tossed out the window.
Which at first glance, doesn’t seem like an intimate plot. It seems akin to a wacky ‘what if?’ comedy. As though we are just going to bear witness to the fallout of a broken therapist and there is credence to that line of thinking. Because this is a comedy series, and a lot of what Jimmy does is both eye-popping and funny. As are a fair chunk of his interactions with his patients when he lets loose and how Paul handles this sudden change in his protégé’s line of thinking and behavior. But in between the wonderfully timed laughs, there are some powerful moments to be found here. The kind that informs us that the humor is there to help us process a topic that is deep and heavy and rarely discussed in his day and age.
Because at the core of the show, is a man that is deeply struggling with grief. Which allows for the show to explore the power it can exert over us and how deeply it can draw us into darkness. And how our desire to be free of that pain and the sorrow it fills us with, can motivate us to go to extreme lengths to shed it. The kind that can potentially bring out the best in us, since there is some merit to what Jimmy does in these first two episodes, but also the dangers that accompany this kind of push, since it abandons proper healing and cutting corners there… can bring about trouble. But what matters more, is that this is… a phenomenal and intimate look at the grieving process, specifically this particular stage and that is indeed something that will resonate with viewers that have been there and prepare others who will soon experience it, and hopefully help those going through it. For that is what this type of television show does and what also helps these moments be so impactful and so realistic, are two key cast members. For Jason Segel sells the pain that Jimmy is going through with an incredible honesty that you quickly connect with, and he is bookended nicely by Harrison Ford. Whose portrayal of Dr. Paul Rhodes is equally as real and equally as powerful, since he represents those who support us in these trying times or we’ve been in his shoes, and what’s truly impressive about this series… is that we are at the bare beginning of a powerful journey. One that will either see Jimmy learn harder lessons or rise to the occasion as he fights hard to make peace with an experience no one is ever prepared to handle. Until next time. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Kold x Windy’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
There are certain moments in life that we put upon a pedestal so to speak. For we believe those particular moments will be life changing. To the point where our lives will be turned upside down in a shockingly positive manner. Where people immediately respect us and the hustle we went through to get there, and where riches and attention untold await us. So, we pour every ounce of good vibes we can into that moment in our minds, so we can try and manifest it and relish in it… only to learn that moments like that… are stunningly rare. Not to mention, real life changing moments tend to be negative and heartbreaking in nature since they come out of left field and the one, we are hoping for… tends to be nothing more than a Tuesday, where the only thing that changes is our mood. That’s simply because, the end game, must be earned and one big moment in our push to obtain it, is followed by more depending on how hungry it makes us. And it is the work that comes after, that gains us respect and gains us the life altering surprises we seek and really… that harsh lesson is top of mind today, because it was precisely what Malika and Renee were forced to begin to learn in this week’s episode of Kold x Windy on WE tv. For ‘Respect Is Everything’ is a story that saw a big moment finally arrive for this talented and troubled musical duo. For their work with Stoney finally hit the airwaves and everyone in Chicago recognized how well this bop, slapped, and Kold and Windy really did believe, this was it… their big moment had arrived. But alas, this was merely that steppingstone moment. One that informed them of how talented they are and that if they dedicated themselves to the work, they would have the respect they desired and the joy and riches they always wanted. But since they expected the moment to hand them everything, they simply basked in the wonder of it and saw some surprises come their way because of it. After all, they were forced to fire their manager since she tried to get a bigger cut of the revenue pie and started to call them out often in a negative manner, something they both rightfully saw as disrespectful and well… their lives didn’t change much after that big moment. They just kept on living and waiting. A common mistake we all make because of how we blow up the moment, and their aloofness, and of course… some unresolved issues from the past… brought forth the juicy drama in this tale. Drama that oddly enough… allowed for us to learn a lot about the duo’s nemesis, Shelly. Since we came to learn that she had no qualms leaving her street persona behind to take part in a chill domestic life with her girlfriend, and we also learned that she comes from money and really… is of two worlds. One of which calls to her often since the streets lets her settle scores and injustices and gives her the cred to chase her own dreams in Drill Music and it was just fascinating to learn all of this, and of course to see how the fury the streets ignite, will indeed come back to haunt folks. Because there was still a desire for revenge regarding Renee’s actions earlier in the season and sadly, since Kold and Windy lowered their guard because their heads were in the clouds because of their achievement, revenge came to them in a manner… that left all of us worried about the future of this duo. Simply because those gunshots were horrifying to listen to, and of course, we’ve come to care deeply about Malika and Renee since we know who they are deep down and want to see them succeed. But while we wait to learn if those muzzle flashes will bring sorrow or concern for their well-being, we can once again bask in a hyper intelligent and realistic tale. One that really did point out, how our lives don’t change just like that when good things happen, and how much has to go into creating permanent positive change. The latter of which of course, is in tune with the core themes of this thoughtful show, and well, all of these elements made for another compelling tale. One that also moved us and left us rooting for this duo further, so we can see if they will rise above the darkness and grow before our eyes. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
When we last settled in to discuss the wondrous series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, we talked at length about how ‘Gambit, Part I’ was quite the unconventional episode. Since it focused heavily on action and adventure, and it featured a bevy of unique storytelling elements that you don’t often find in this franchise. Such as pirates and mutiny and the supposed death of one Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Plus, it offered up a juicy cliffhanger and well… it is safe to say… that a great deal of us had one important question hanging over our heads after that episode. Specifically… was ‘Gambit, Part II’ going to be as bold and as unique as its predecessor? For this was a grand opportunity to do something supremely special with the franchise in its final year and well… it took little time for the episode to answer that question with a hard… yes and no.
Because the first part of this episode was indeed as unconventional as its predecessor. Since it turned out that the crew of the Enterprise figured out that Commander Riker, and Captain Picard (who they still didn’t know was alive), were basically asking them to play along and work the long con with them. Which allowed for the pirates to escape under the belief they did critical damage to a Galaxy class starship. Which in turn made it seem as though this episode was going to feature a powerful cat and mouse game. One that would eventually end with a grand showdown between the 1701-D and the pirates, where difficult and ugly decisions would have to be made to properly bring these pirates to justice and to keep them from achieving whatever sneaky goal they had in mind. A reality reinforced by the fact that eventually, Jean-Luc crossed a line and brought down Baran to take control of the situation. But as the episode rolled along, it became clear that more traditional elements were coming into play here. Since Picard was exposed by Tallera for his actions in that fight with the Enterprise, but she didn’t blow his cover to harm him… she instead did it to see if he was an ally. For Tallera was really T’Paal, a Vulcan Intelligence Officer, trying to stop isolationist forces from assembling the artifacts. Which would create, a psionic weapon that could wreak havoc in the galaxy. Which in turn brought forth a desperate push to complete the mission to out the wrongdoers planning to ruin peace and security on Vulcan. One that eventually informed the crew the captain was okay, when Picard and Riker beamed aboard their own ship to get the final artifact. A move that allowed for Riker to stay aboard the ship to make preparations with Vulcan while Picard completed the mission, one that turned out to feature a double cross. For T’Paal was in fact, not a member of anything Vulcan related. She was one of the isolationists, looking for bring Vulcan to its knees, and for a brief moment it appeared success was in the cards for her, since she brought down some of the pirate crew with her new weapon. But Picard’s keen mind and eyes helped him to realize… that her weapon meant nothing without a desire for violence from her opponent. Bringing this long and ugly quest to an end and leaving us with a two-parter that featured perfect balance. For it was indeed fifty perfect bold and original storytelling and featured fifty percent of the things that make Star Trek great. Since rising above ugly and being better people is what saved the day and well… that balance really did make for one satisfying pair of stories. Because it never strayed too far from the core elements of Trek, but did enough to wow us, and one can find no fault with that. Not to mention, the character arcs in this two-part story were outright amazing, and that helped to make this story supremely memorable and worth our while. Since Riker’s push to bring justice forth for his captain was just incredible and speaks to how much this crew has had an impact upon one another. Plus, that scene between Worf and Data is pure gold, since it allowed for us to watch them both grow before our eyes. All of which made this, a supremely worthwhile re-watch when all is said and done. One that definitely generates excitement at a time when we should be feeling sorrow for the end of the series. Since we are now eager to see what other storytelling surprises and wonders await us as we creep toward a grand farewell for this brave and intrepid crew. Until next time. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 306 of ‘Jack Ryan’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
We like to believe that defeating evil is an easy task in this world. As though finding a source point of it, and eliminating it from our lives, will solve the world’s problems and bring peace to it at last, and that is simply not the case. Because when evil really gets its claws into the right individuals, it lives on, it thrives and finds ways to regroup and attack. It might not be tomorrow, because evil is patient, but it will eventually return to the limelight. Which is why in reality… the quest to stop evil is far more costly and bloody than we give it credit, since so many have to be locked away or dealt with in some fashion, to truly kill what evil has inspired in the hearts of so many. If anything, this is a hard lesson that is of importance today, simply it is one that Jack Ryan and his friends were reminded of/taught in the next episode of Jack Ryan. For ‘Ghosts’ is a story that saw Jack arrive in the Czech Republic to deal with Sokol at last. After that is… Jack dealt with the CIA. Simply because with Wright out of the picture, it was open season on the former analyst turned hero, but Jack was ready… and so was Wright. Because Jack was able to elude his pursuers with an assist from Alena so he could get to work and well, once Jack made it clear that there was a clear and present danger to the world, Wright was able to pull an end around on Miller. Getting his wrong world view out of the picture, so she and Jack could get on track and stop this madness. Which led to a powerful and frenzied search for Sokol. One that Jack was forced to do on the fly with minimal intelligence. But thankfully, he was able to figure out the location that the Russians were going to use to stage their fake attack, and it was up to him and his supremely small team to figure out how to stop it with minimal loss of life and thanks to a NATO team, and a long tunnel, Jack’s team was able to isolate the truck with the bomb on it inside one of those tunnels and detonate it. Saving countless lives and putting a quick end to any plans to immediately start a World War, and that wasn’t the only happy moment present in this tale, since a big-time villain in this story, finally got his just desserts after weeks of causing trouble. For Petr and Luka finally came face to face, with the former making it clear that he definitely had a big hand in guiding this mess. Which of course, prompted quite the showdown between both men, as they postured and glared and spoke of honor and duty since Petr came to understand that Luka was not the rebel, he was hoping he would be. That battle however, ended badly for Petr, since Luka was ready and willing to do what must be done to immobilize Petr long enough… for him to meet his end at his daughter’s hands. Since she was done with her father and still could not reconcile the cruelty and evil that he put on display against her. However, while all of that… seems like a happy ending, one that would expose the evil and solve the problem, all of this was the setup to the lesson. Because while Petr may have had a hand in this and helped coordinate Sokol… he is but one cog in the wheel. For there are other believers who desperately wish for the reformation of the Soviet Union and see it return to the forefront of the world as a superpower to be feared. Which means the fight is not over and this ragtag group of heroes, one with Luka at their side, now fully understand evil and how their fight to dismantle it will take time and cost a great many lives. For they now must kill an ideal and that is such a difficult and daunting task, and it will be genuinely interesting to see what lies ahead for Jack and his friends… as they make the final push to expose this plot and dismantle the evil it has inspired in so many. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt

A digital age company driven by its entrepreneurial culture and commitment to innovation, the Lionsgate brand is synonymous with bold, original, relatable entertainment for audiences worldwide.’ Written by John Edward Betancourt It is definitely safe to say, that crime dramas and murder mysteries on television are in a strange place right now. Because while they are incredibly popular and beloved by audiences everywhere, the genre simply isn’t challenging itself. It’s playing it safe and sticking with the stuff that audiences know and love. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means, because a lot of these shows are indeed engaging and intense and entertaining through and through. But genres do indeed need to challenge themselves and push the envelope to keep things fresh and to keep the wonder in our hearts, otherwise they quickly fade onto the backburner for a little while. But thankfully, the arrival of a new murder mystery series on Peacock accomplishes the growth and challenge the genre needs and that makes Poker Face quite the revolutionary series. Simply because, it reinvents the genre while at the same time paying tribute to what makes it great, and it accomplishes this feat by introducing us to a supremely unique investigator of the truth, a one Charlie Cale. And what makes her so unique, is that… she is not a traditional gumshoe in the slightest. For she has no training in dealing with crime nor is she even a member of law enforcement. She is simply… a lost soul trying to live her life to the fullest, one that harbors an incredible gift that helps her bring justice to the world, and when we catch up with her in ‘Dead Man’s Hand’, a horrible incident involving a close friend of hers, allows for us to learn what that unique talent is. As it turns out, Charlie has the ability to just know when someone is lying to her, and regardless of how hard someone tries to keep the truth from her… they simply cannot. Which is a gift that gets her in a lot of trouble in this premiere, the kind that puts her on the road and that alone is quite original in nature. As is the fact that Charlie’s quest for justice isn’t bound by some kind of horrific trauma or a grizzled desire to make the world right from witnessing or experiencing a wrong. She simply believes that the truth matters and should be expressed, and it just so happens that she ends up solving big crimes out of that belief and that… is simply incredible. Because it makes Charlie, a pure hero of sorts, one that really does want to stick up for the little guy for no reason outside of… what’s fair is fair and what’s right is right and that is genuinely refreshing to find in a murder mystery and what’s amazing, is that the majesty of this series doesn’t end with Charlie. Because being on the road allows for Charlie and the audience, to experience unique corners of America and equally as unique cases for her to solve. The kind that are refreshing and original as the title character but never stray from what we love about murder mysteries. Which means the crimes we see are committed out of acts of jealousy and greed and the other dark elements of the human condition that make us crave justice. But what surrounds that core element, are original concepts and are quite surprising in nature and they captivate you through and through since you’re dying to know how Charlie is going to bring the crook to justice and even those solutions, are different than we normally expect from these shows. All of which makes for an incredible experience, one that engages the viewer and delights since you are plunged into incredible corners of the world and cases that dazzle and wow and what’s even more incredible… is that there is still more to celebrate from this series. Because in order for a series like this to work, you need great acting. To sell the crime, to draw us into a new world and story, and that is present here in spades. Courtesy of some top-tier guest stars such as Adrien Brody, Chloë Sevigny, John Ratzenberger, Lil Rel Howery, and Benjamin Bratt… and that’s just the folks that show up in the first four episodes. But each one of them bring stunning gravitas and depth to their roles and immerse us further and they are all complimented by the star of the series, Natasha Lyonne. Who plays Charlie of course, and she is simply incredible in the role. For she is the reason that Charlie is so pure and wholesome in nature and those elements and the vulnerability that Natasha also brings to the role, is what has us rooting for her every step of the way. If anything, this is must-see television through and through and the show is… a perfect murder mystery. Which should come as no surprise since Rian Johnson is the mastermind behind this whole series and no one approaches murder mysteries quite like he does. But it is also perfect because it is so accessible. For this is a series that has something for everyone. Courtesy of its flawless tension, well-timed humor, and compelling cases that you emotionally invest within, and the best news of all, is that you can experience the wonder of this show right now. For the first four episodes are available to stream on Peacock and what’s amazing, is that four episodes are simply not enough to satisfy. For this is the best murder mystery series to hit the airwaves in ages, and it will absolutely leave you desperate for more of Charlie Cale and her grand fight to keep the truth and what’s right at the forefront of the world and truly, it will be fascinating to see what other incredible cases and characters await her… as she continues her long and winding journey on the road. Until next time. Gallery of ‘Poker Face’ Guest Stars Written by John Edward Betancourt
For the most part, Star Trek: The Next Generation is a series that rarely took major risks. Sure, it would do some bold things with the characters and the stories, and obviously, stories that were impactful and offered commentary about our modern world were a true staple of this franchise. But those wild stories, the kind that wouldn’t fit in the mold were far and few between and understandably so. After all, The Original Series did that often and took some heat for it, and a series that wanted to maintain its goodwill after earning it, knew to mostly steer clear of such stories. But with the final season upon the writer’s room, and a pending movie franchise for the crew on the horizon… clearly this was the moment when the series opted to throw caution to the wind and try new things, as evidenced by the next two episodes in this series.
For the ‘Gambit’ Saga is quite the unconventional TNG story. One that played out in a supremely unique fashion. Since early on in ‘Part I’, the crew of the Enterprise was engaged in quite the unique manhunt. One that was for Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself. For he had gone missing on an archeological dig, and the crew wanted answers and received quite the devastating one. In that, the captain of Starfleet’s Flagship, perished in a simple bar fight. Something that did not sit right with Will Riker, to the point where he made some bold moves and decisions. Such as humbly yet firmly requesting that Starfleet Command let him use the 1701-D and her vast resources to offer proper closure as to how one of the fleet’s most decorated captains lost his life in a meaningless moment. Which shockingly, Starfleet Command agreed to and just like that, Will Riker made the time to dust up an informant and found himself getting into phaser fire fights with rogue agents and that led… to another wild twist. Wherein Riker was captured by those he was fighting and thrust aboard a ship with… an alive and well Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Who was going under the name Galen and well… that only confused Riker further and thankfully, he and the audience, were able to learn, that Jean-Luc had stumbled onto something quite fascinating. In that, these rogue agents were robbing archeological sites all over the sector and were working to find specific artifacts that would handle some kind of secret need. Which meant, it was up to Riker and Picard to solve this mystery, one so great, that this story was forced to end on a juicy cliffhanger. But what matters more here, is that none of this… was hardcore sci-fi in the slightest. It was science fiction with a pirate twist. One filled with colorful characters and an amazing cameo from Star Trek legacy actor, Robin Curtis. Who just so happened to play Lieutenant Saavik in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and it is just incredible to see her alongside Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes in an unconventional Star Trek story. One that really does lean harder into adventure and had it been broadcast in any other season, it would have been lambasted by the fans for not being properly part of the mythos. But here… in this final season, the whole episode truly works. Simply because it does liven things up and informs us that season seven will send the unexpected our way. Not to mention, it is filled to the brim with delightful twists and turns and some amazing acting from the principle cast as well. Since the crew is forced to reconcile with the ‘reality’ that their beloved captain is gone and that they all have new roles to play. If anything, it just best to declare this particular episode as downright fun through and through. Because you simply savor the mystery and the many wild moments, and the cliffhanger works as well since you’re dying to know if Picard was forced to damage his ship to keep his cover and well… the only way to know, is to continue the journey post haste. So, we can see what becomes of the Enterprise, and of course… what it is these pirates are searching for and to wrap up a two-part surprise, so we can continue to sneak toward the end, of one of the finest science fiction shows to ever hit the airwaves. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt The thought of springtime brings forth a calling within in all of us. Once that demands we get outside as quickly as possible to enjoy the wonder of nature. Simply because we’ve been cooped up for months thanks to the winter season and a little fresh air would do us good.
