Written by John Edward Betancourt It is definitely safe to say, that the AMC series, Kevin Can F**k Himself, is one of the most original stories to hit the airwaves in years, for several reasons. Such as the fact that it is a rare satire of the sitcom, a type of story so sacred and so important to television that few have ever dared to challenge its tropes and the toxicity it sometimes presents alongside its clichés. But this series took them head on and dove into so much more as well. After all, it was fascinating to see the sitcom be used as a coping mechanism for Allison McRoberts as she worked to navigate a miserable life due to the miserable marriage she was enduring with her husband, Kevin, and that of course… inspired one stunning plot. One revolving around an abused woman’s desperate quest to escape a truly toxic relationship. Catapulting this series to new heights courtesy of its commentary on a topic that sadly remains taboo in these modern times. If anything, those key elements made this show downright addicting. Since we had to know where Allison’s wild and desperate plan was going to take her, and of course… whether or not that wall between reality and fantasy was going to be broken and well, after getting our answers via a powerful cliffhanger, we’ve been hungry and desperate for more of this series and well… the time draws near to finally follow-up on that moment and more. Since the second and final (yes, final) season of this brilliant saga is about to arrive on our television screens. For this series returns to AMC and AMC+ next Monday and in anticipation of its arrival, we here at NTG thought it would be worthwhile to preview season two, in a spoiler-free manner of course. In part to build excitement for its return since we’ve all been waiting so patiently, but to also celebrate what is going to be a powerful year of storytelling. For that is the first thing you’ll notice about season two of this show… that it goes harder into its analysis of the toxic tropes featured in sitcoms and it also features some bold storytelling choices for the characters. The kind that grows them in a dynamic manner and surprises us every single step of the way and honesty, it is the characters that truly allow for season two to shine. Because by removing the illusionary sitcom wall from the equation, we are able to really see the impact that Kevin’s toxic and abusive nature has had upon so many, and how the events of season one changed everyone and pushed them in directions they never thought possible, and how those same events opened their eyes to so much. Making season two a powerful character study, one that truly breaks down the power of abusive relationships and the difficulties that truly accompany escaping those relationships. Simply because we as a society don’t recognize them as the mental health threat they actually are, leaving so many to their own devices, and that in turn pulls us in like never before and compels us to follow this story to its conclusion. If anything, it is equally as safe to say, that season two of this show, actually manages to outshine season one. Which is saying a lot considering how revolutionary the first season was. But year two is unrestrained and brave storytelling. The kind that genuinely takes us on a powerful and engaging ride, and once again features utterly stunning performances from a supremely talented cast. With Annie Murphy and Mary Hollis Inboden leading the way once again, and the best news of all… is that we only have to wait one more week before we are once again immersed within this amazing universe and all the thoughtful and impactful moments it is going to send our way.
