Truly, there are a great many reasons that fans tune into The Madame Blanc Mysteries on Acorn TV. For some, it’s the dynamic between Dom and Jean that keeps them coming back for more, since their tense and budding love is something that captivates. For others, it’s the escape factor of seeing the beautiful French countryside via Saint Victoire, and there are plenty who swing by for the unique characters that make up the town as well. But of the many reasons that people tune into this cozy mystery, there is one that each and every one of us share in. In that, we love this show simply because it offers up a realistic simplicity when it comes to the incredible cases that Jean works on. Because what she often encounters tends to be grounded in very real, very sorrowful concepts that show up often in our world. Allowing for us to deeply care about the case and justice, and never was this more evident than during the show’s season two finale. Because this was a case that seemed grounded in the very real possibility that a newcomer to town, was nothing short of trouble. Because there were a string of robberies taking place in town, and when an item from one of the robberies, one that took place in a fine perfume shop and turned deadly, showed up in the hands of Cooper, well… it wasn’t long before he was in custody and in real trouble. Since Caron really did think he was the culprit. Which meant his only hope for freedom was Jean. Thankfully, she was quickly assigned to his case to prove that other factors were at work here and at first, she failed to find those factors. But as is always the case with the cases that Jean works… little clues add up and little surprises lead to big ones and she was able to make a heartbreaking discovery. In that… the death that took place here wasn’t related to random chaos, it was a calculated move brought forth by a broken brother. One that was eager to showcase his skills in the perfume business and disagreed with his brother about every business plan and well… after years of being abused, marginalized, and outright forgotten… he used this opportunity to seize the day and remove his pain. Which was another case that felt as though it was ripped from everyday headlines. Because that’s the kind of stuff we hear about on the news or dive deeper into via a podcast, and that’s the kind of realism, this show thrives within. Because it is always here to remind us that murder isn’t as complex as some crime shows put forth. It’s usually grounded in sour emotions and mistakes and the worst parts of us that can be and are resolved by most… but ignored by others and well, that… made for a powerful and bittersweet finale. One that would have been completely and utterly bleak, had it not been for the one major bright spot present in this particular tale. For this is also a story that brought the whole Barbara mess to its conclusion, in quite the satisfying manner. Because she made it known to Simone, that she was planning to murder Jean by burning her shop to the ground on a night when Jean was working late and well, that opportunity never came to fruition. Because the police were waiting, all because Caron set in motion a grand plan with Simone. One where she wore a wire when she met with Barb, all because Caron knew… there was unfinished business with Jean’s case and that the killer would try and finish what they started. But thankfully, Barbara’s confessions, along with a crime in front of witnesses, meant the end of Barb and a new chapter for Jean. Where she can enjoy her life on her terms at last and well, it will be interesting to see what that new chapter looks like as we dive further into the wonder of season three of this magnificent series. Until next time. Watch ‘The Madame Blanc Mysteries’
