When we last settled in to discuss the wondrous, NBC new-boot of Night Court, we were all left stunned at quite the cliffhanger. In that, Dan Fielding was now aware of the fact that there was a chance that Jake was his son and that is a lot for a man to process, and well, we all wanted to know, if that was the case and how both men would handle the prospect and the reality, and thankfully, this week’s episode of the show wasted little time in exploring all the answers to those questions. Which made ‘The Judge’s Boyfriend’s Dad, Part 2’ quite the juggernaut episode. One that was super sentimental and beautiful, and also as funny as can be. In fact, let’s take a moment and recognize the funniest plot line in the story before we dive into the whole Dan/Jake storyline. Simply because, Lacretta, Wendie Malick, and Nyambi Nyambi deserve some serious applause for the wonderful scenes they put together here. All of which involved Gurgs working overtime to stop Julianne from smoking outside of Judge Stone’s window, and the lengths she went to make that happen, combined with Wyatt’s ability to get lost in the moment, led to comedic gold from all three actors. The kind that truly left us in stitches and served as a wonderful breakaway from what could easily be seen as some of Night Court’s finest dramedy work, because of the whole matter with Dan and Jake. For we learned in the opening moments of that storyline that Abby and Jake were not related, and that more time would be needed to get the results in and that meant… these men had to genuinely process the reality that they might be related and that brought about, some unique moments. Wherein Jake… went for broke and assumed that Dan was his father. Which prompted him to open up like never before and really try to fill that void and that was powerful to watch and surprising to see in a sitcom. But it worked and it added depth to his character like never before and surprisingly enough… he endured a sampling of that bond. Since he and Dan found common ground and bonded and enjoyed some real father and son moments. At the expense of Abby in a comedic manner no less, but that’s okay. Because… he needed that, and oddly, so did Dan. Since he tapped into feelings he never had before. Which made the ending, sobering and bittersweet for certain. Since we came to learn… this duo wasn’t related, and coincidence led to their mimicking. But the bond, well they found that… and that speaks volumes to who we become when just open up to people and offer the best parts of us. All of which made, for a stunningly powerful and beautiful episode of the show. One that spoke to the power of family, of what life is like for those who don’t have a complete understanding of the concept courtesy of circumstances out of their control and well, this episode really does deserve our awe. Because it is just rare for sitcoms to go this deep and dive into such powerful concepts. But this one did it and offered up a story that will stay with you for some time. Courtesy of this intimate journey for Dan and Jake. Not to mention, we need to take a moment and offer a standing ovation to Ryan Hansen. Who just let loose with his acting and comedic skills to sell this story and move us, and all of these elements just go to show, how special and unique this show truly is. Because where else can you enjoy a story where the wild and absurd happens one minute, and tears come to your eyes the next? But that’s Night Court, plain and simple, and this one should go down as one of the franchise’s finest stories, for taking all the risks that it did and for doing something we just so rarely see sitcoms do, and it really does leave us eager for more of this new-boot. To see what other powerful moments it will send our way, whilst making us laugh, courtesy of some of the boldest writing out there, and a cast that can do it all. Until next time. Watch ‘Night Court’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 207 of ‘The Irrational’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
If there one particular question that has plagued mankind in this modern era of information, it would have to be… what would we do if we could see into the future? Because for the first time ever, technology is giving us a grand understanding of things to come. For instance, we can now test what types of genetic markers we are prone to, and potentially understand what kind of health issues we will face down the down the line, and it is only a matter of time before we outright know what will happen to us at 64. Which is huge, and incredible, and there will come a day when we can apply that to just about everything else, and people are working on that now. By using predictive AI and algorithms to understand what lie ahead. Which of course, brings us back to that question. Because we’ve never been armed with such knowledge, so what we would do with it? Well, it turns out the perfect place to explore the answer to that question… is the next episode of The Irrational on NBC. For ‘The Wrong Side of Maybe’ saw Alec and his team be immersed in a scary surprise. In that, a data whiz named Laura had built a predictive model regarding the mid-Atlantic railroad system and she came across something horrifying. In that, her predictive models showcased that a massive disaster was brewing. One where people would die and the rail system would burn because the perfect storm was brewing, and she of course, enlisted Alec’s help in the matter and they raced to try and stop this. In part by working to figure out how best to stop the disaster from happening, which they hoped would come easily by showcasing to people in charge the amount of life that could be lost in such a disaster. But that of course, didn’t work, so they pleaded with the public and tried their best to slow things down. Only to learn that such a plea did not help. For other factors were in motion and well, that prompted a deep dive and a Hail Mary to stop this. One that allowed for Kylie to discover that a virus was implanted into certain railroad subsystems… by one of Laura’s executive team. Who saw an opportunity to manipulate the situation and gain financially from making a disaster happen. But thanks to Alec, and his bold decision to literally stand in harm’s way to save lives… that didn’t happen. But what matters most, is how that engaging and intense plot, revealed that if by chance… we could see into tomorrow, it would be as polarizing as anything else in this life, and it would result in chaos. For the irrational minded would seize the opportunity to benefit themselves and their already thick bank accounts in every way imaginable. While others would spend their days combating those actions to keep people safe. Meaning such an incredible discovery, would go nowhere in this life. Because irrational thinking would nullify its progress and put us into a cyclical state of sorts. Which means… it’s best we, as Alec put at the end of this story… just enjoy the moment and do the best we can to thrive within it, and the wonder it can send our way. All of which brought forth, a fascinating ‘what if?’ episode to say the least. One that basically informs us, that while we want the answer to that question to be, that we would use it for good and make the world a better place, we’re just not ready for that yet. We need to grow as a species, and leave our proclivities behind before that happens, otherwise… this is the chaos we would endure, and this show deserves a round of applause for giving us such a thoughtful tale. One that let every character shine, including Phoebe since she came back into the fold, and informed us too that Alec isn’t quite ready to abandon that which defines him and well, all this episode does is leave us eager for more of a series that challenges the human condition like no other show out there. Until next time. Watch ‘The Irrational’

Healing is a word that carries with it a supremely black and white view in our minds, and understandably so. Because just about every injury we deal with regarding with that word, follows a very baseline course in our minds. For instance, if we cut our hand, we go to the hospital and get stitches for the wound and we heal. If we need knee surgery, we have our knee repaired and we heal. And if we suffer through grief and loss, we heal from it. But as time marches on, it is becoming clear that we cannot think about healing in such basic terms. Simply because it is not a simple and quick process. There is irritation as the wound closes and stitches must be removed, and we must go through physical therapy for our knee surgery and mental therapy for our loss. For healing is a genuine process, and sometimes… we are not the same when we heal. For we may have a scar when that wound heals and we may not regain full use of our knee after major surgery on it, and our worldview is changed when we lose someone. So, how then should we view healing? Well perhaps we need to see healing as the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one, so that we can go about life differently in that new chapter, and what that looks like, is top of mind today, simply because it was showcased in the next episode of Brilliant Minds on NBC. For ‘The Colorblind Artist’ saw Dr. Wolf receive a very specific request from the agent of world-famous artist, Gabriel Ferguson. Wherein she wanted Wolf to meet Gabriel because he wasn’t himself after an accident and his career was about to falter and potentially end and well, what Wolf learned about the man truly hammered home that fascinating lesson. Because it turned out that Gabriel had been through it in the past year. For a devastating car accident ended the life of his beloved wife, and the toxic fumes he inhaled while waiting for help, damaged the pathways in his brain that allowed for him to see colors. All of which in turn, he believed, robbed him of his ability to create art and of course… to feel anything really. Because he was hurting, his life was changing and that meant it fell to Wolf, to help him understand his worth in this new chapter of his life and how he could find his way back. Since his body adjusted and gave him new elements to his sight, and while it was slow going to get through to him, eventually, Wolf helped him to understand that he lost nothing from a talent perspective and that he could find ways to honor his wife and heal from the pain of losing her. Through art and through living and that give rise to incredible new creations… that offered new perspective on the world. But what mattered more is that Wolf correctly pointed out the central theme. That the loss of someone we care deeply for, and major injuries are truly the end of chapters for us. For we won’t be the same emotionally and physically and we must understand that and accept it. Because we still must go on and we still have to honor those we’ve lost and what better way… than by embracing that new chapter and thriving within it and learning what positive things we can find within it. Which made for a beautiful story, one that also featured some other musings regarding new chapters. Since Van and Ericka struggled to learn that new chapters in romance aren’t easy and can often go the wayside when there isn’t enough communication and understanding what that new chapter entails, and Carol also learned… that sometimes, new chapters mean absolutely closing the old one through and through. Since she started to see the toxic nature of sticking with the patient that slept with her husband, and that prompted her to close that uncomfortable chapter, with a bang no less. Since her car was vandalized in response to sending her patient away, that will absolutely bring about some twists and turns in the new chapter for her. All of which, made for one engaging episode. One that in a way, pulled the show back to its core roots. Not to say that it was straying, but it has loosened up a bit to tell more personal stories about the staff and close out the mystery of Roman/John Doe. But great shows always know how to ground themselves and get back to basics and this one did so in a magnificent and beautiful manner, by informing us that healing is so much more than a simple moment. Until next time. Watch ‘Brilliant Minds’
