Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Five Premiere of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’. To revisit the Season Four Finale, click here.
If there is one particular season of storytelling, on television, that makes fans of a franchise as nervous as can be, it is the final season. Simply because, so many television shows have the tendency to not stick the landing when it comes to their farewell tour for a bevy of reasons. Sometimes, it is because of the fact that the final season is too ambitious and just goes places that don’t fit or work. Or the ending simply isn’t up to snuff and doesn’t resonate with the audience, and well… what fans are left with are complaints and a bit of sadness since they really want to properly bid farewell to a show they love. But what is incredible, is that there is one franchise that fans don’t harbor such nerves with since the Star Trek Universe knows how to bid a show farewell. After all, the final season of The Next Generation featured enough highlights to forget about its missteps, especially its finale, and Deep Space Nine handled its farewell tour well, and even Voyager figured out how to stick the landing. Not to mention, even the new shows that are beginning to come to their end, continue to impress with their endings. For Picard featured some of the best Trek storytelling in years. If anything, the only real outlier is the final season of Enterprise. But that track record otherwise, is why it is safe to say that so much of us tuned into the season five premiere of Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+, with a sense of joy in our hearts. For despite this being the farewell tour of the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031-A, we know deep down the show will handle that in a powerful manner and well, that reality was reinforced during this week’s season five premiere of the show. For ‘Red Directive’ and ‘Under the Twin Moons’ offered up a lot of wondrous moments to say the least. For instance, these are a pair of stories that continued to build upon the hope that was injected into the galaxy in the season four finale. Since we came to learn that the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet were once again growing in strength, and that good people were working to correct the Federation’s past mistakes, and the majesty of these opening tales didn’t end there. Mainly because, it also didn’t take that long for this premiere to establish what the crew will be working to deal with in their farewell tour, and well… what lies ahead is quite the task to say the least. One that harbors ties to the core of the franchise and should lead to some powerful philosophical moments as the final season rolls along.
Courtesy of the return, of the species now known as ‘The Progenitors’. Or rather, the return of their mythos and their actions in the galaxy. Since these beings were the ones to seed all life in the galaxy, a reality that was learned by then Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise of that era in the TNG episode, ‘The Chase’. And here, these beings are of note because a Romulan scientist named Vellek, who was there when Picard and his away team learned the truth from these beings, stumbled upon their technology and its location long ago. Which of course, he worked to keep a secret but, in these episodes, that secret is at risk of being exposed by a pair of villains known only as L’ak and Moll, and their desire to uncover the secrets of the Progenitors brought forth incredible action in this premiere and set the stage for incredible stakes this season.
Because the power to create life, to know it’s true building blocks, would be disastrous in the wrong hands and that really is a lovely setup for the final season of this show. For not only does it put the crew upon an epic quest, but it could potentially ground the story in some seriously beautiful concepts. The kind that could explore how we find purpose and meaning in life, and of course… how we are all one, and there were hints of that in the second episode of this super-sized premiere. Since there were grand discussions about second chances and what they can do for us, and of course… we were reminded of what this crew means to one another, since there was our first, final season farewell here. For this was the swan song for Doug Jones as Captain Saru, and that was bittersweet in nature. Granted, he may return for the finale, but for now… his time aboard the Discovery has come to an end, and Doug Jones deserves a massive round of applause for his work on this series and for making Saru someone we relate to and look up to. In the end, this was just a triumphant return to form for Discovery, and a bittersweet one at that. After all, without this show, we wouldn’t be enjoying the wondrous amount of Star Trek we are now, so it wounds a bit that we only have eight episodes left of adventures with this crew. But at least now we know that no second will be wasted and that the mission will be worthwhile. Because that’s just how Star Trek handles its business when one of its shows goes off the air, and if the emotion present in this premiere, and the action present as well, is any indicator of what’s to come… then we are simply in for one final epic ride through the galaxy with a crew we adore and love. One that reminded us of the wonder of this franchise and how important these stories are to our daily lives, because of the hope they send our way. Until next time. Watch ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Apples Never Fall’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
We are taught from a very early age… that mistakes are unacceptable. Because the modern world only wants wins, only wants perfection and we cannot let foolish mistakes be part of our journey. So, we try hard to fly right and not mess up and if we do, because we are only human… we do our best to make it seem as though we didn’t commit a single misstep, and well… this is a dumb lesson to learn. Because as mentioned a moment ago, people screw up, it’s in our nature. Because flawless is impossible, and without mistakes, we don’t learn, we don’t improve. We just coast along, and that’s why we need to embrace our faux pas and all the consequences that accompany them. To be a better person. If anything, the real truth about how we need to handle our mistakes is top of mind today, simply because it happened to be the lesson that Brooke learned in the next episode of Apples Never Fall on Peacock. A feat that ‘Brooke’ accomplished, by finally having to own up to the reality… that she had been lying to her fiancé for some time now, and her family… over the fact that she was Savannah’s lover. A move that she reflected upon deeply in this tale, with much remorse and much sorrow. Because she really did just go for it, out of the belief she was being cheated upon and well… that poor choice brought about so much sorrow. Since she eventually learned, the only infidelity in her relationship was her own… and that… there was nothing to be gained by cheating as is. There was only sneaking about, guilt and more lies, and the reality… that she needed to be better. She needed to be honest and open in her relationship and focus on communication over revenge through such acts and she of course… needed to be the same with her family and well… that prompted growth. The kind where Brooke did indeed face the consequences of her actions and learned from her mistakes and made new inroads with her family. Giving rise to quite the emotional journey for Brooke, and oddly enough… her standing tall and facing her mistakes, led to all kinds of surprises in this tale regarding the case as well. Such as the fact that her return to the house to check in, allowed for Amy to finally speak up about her darker days, and it also brought about… some hard truths about Stan and Joy’s relationship. In that, it was not as sound as they made it seem. In fact, there was another man long ago that Joy felt a pull toward. Who wrote Joy letters that she kept, that the kids found. The kind that Stan burned, giving rise to more concerns about his role in Joy’s disappearance but even that… held less weight here. Mainly because what Brooke told the police about Savannah, put them on her trail and they actually managed to garner some fascinating information about her. After all, the search warrant served on the Delaney home, brought certain items into their stead, the kind that brought about fingerprints for Savannah, and revealed a bevy of aliases. One of which brought them to a remote home with a mysterious owner, who informed the police that Savannah did stay there, and she did help him out financially not that long ago. But it was the box of Savannah’s personal effects that he had, one that showcased the Delaneys that was of real concern. Because it made it appear as though, Savannah had a plan regarding the family, and possibly Joy, and that changes everything. For it does indeed make Stan appear to be nothing more than a bumbling husband, that was/is barreling toward divorce, and that Savannah is the real problem. But while we wait to see if that is the case, we can celebrate, another messy but brilliant episode. One that featured some awful behaviors from Brooke, that she did atone for, and will learn from. Doesn’t make those actions right, naturally, but one harbors less disdain when a person starts to own up to their secrets and their mistakes and well, Brooke’s journey here and the revelations in front of us, do indeed leave us wondering… what other secrets lie ahead as we barrel toward the answer to the central question of this show… what happened to Joy Delaney? Until next time. Watch ‘Apples Never Fall’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Three Finale of ‘Resident Alien’. To revisit Season Three’s Penultimate Episode, click here.
More often than not, television shows that harbor some kind of a running message or examine unique corners of the human condition, have a tendency to put their messages and their explorations aside when the season finale arrives and understandably so. After all, this is a television show, and it is undoubtedly working toward some kind of a big conclusion, one that takes precedence, and the oft epic nature of that… allow for forgiveness from the audience so they can just enjoy what the show has to offer. But what’s fascinating is not every single show subscribes to that particular edict. Some in fact, are eager to continue to explore while they wow the audience, such as Resident Alien on SYFY. For the season three finale of this show, took the time to heal wounds, explore the power of communication, and bravery, and what it means to fight for family. That is of course, after ‘Homecoming’ made it seem as though that wasn’t going to be the case. For early on, it really did seem as though epic was going to be the focus. After all, D’arcy made it to Yellowstone with the bomb and was aboard the ship and ready to detonate and back in Patience, Harry and Asta came to learn that the plan was about to go down in a matter of hours, from their new ally… Joseph. Who turned on the Greys when he learned that he was basically expendable to them and well, they all made their way north to save all of humanity. Which did bring about some epic battles for certain. The kind that saw Joseph take on hybrids to stop the water plan cold, and once that was done… he was able to return to Patience and face great odds courtesy of General Wright and her RoboTracker. Which brought about a fight that ended in disaster when Peter remembered the truth about his past, and the epic didn’t end there. After all, there was a fight for the ages above in the ship. One that saw Bridget and Harry jack some Greys up in the most hilarious manner possible before ugly defeat came forth. One that seemingly cost Harry everything and left him traumatized. Giving rise to the reminder that the heroes don’t always perfectly win the day. Sometimes… they just get a little bit ahead as they did here. But in the midst of all of that… were the beautiful moments in question.
After all, there was a little downtime before the fight got underway on the ship and that allowed for Asta and D’arcy to reconcile and find peace again. By coming to understand how their flaws can also be their biggest strengths, and that their bond was mattered more than anything else. Not to mention, down on terra firma, Mike finally stepped into the realm of emotional maturity to set up a healthy relationship with a woman he cared deeply for, and finally came face to face with incontrovertible truth about how there is life out there. But the centerpiece of those moments, revolved around the Hawthorne family, who took big steps to bring their baby girl home and to claim agency. Ben handled the latter since he had his tracker removed and Kate… well she kept hers to get up there one last time, and she fought alongside D’arcy to bring her little one home.
Which by the way, was a successful mission. Since D’arcy saved the baby and returned her home and found peace and that was made those little moments so great. Since they all spoke to the characters doing the absolute most to heal, to find peace and to understand the benefits of being brave of being bold in life. Plus, this was a fine reminder that we should risk it all for family because we only get one. And that made this quite the lovely season finale. One that brought home a tough year of storytelling, one designed to basically teach us about the ups and downs of life, and how we survive them and come out of them a better person, and of course… this is also a story that just so happened to harbor a few surprises along the way. Since Liv and Peter met in the woods after Peter escaped the General’s clutches. Plus, General Wright made the bold gambit of opening a portal as part of her quest to save humanity from the aliens of the universe. And of course… we also came to learn that Harry… isn’t Harry. Instead, this morose doctor is a Mantid, and the real Harry is sitting in a cell on the Moon, waiting for a way out and well… that’s about as epic a cliffhanger as it gets. One that we cannot wait see resolved, and hopefully we get a season four announcement soon. So that we can see how Harry escapes, how that nasty Mantid gets handled and to enjoy… more of this beautiful and funny series about the human condition, and its fallacies and its wonders and how every last bit of it is worth celebrating. Until next time. Watch ‘Resident Alien’

There was a time in American culture, where one particular expectation befell the children of this land. In that, parents genuinely wanted their little ones to follow in their footsteps career wise or take over the family business, and it makes sense as to why that was so important. Because at that period in time, there was real gravity to having a family member carry on the family business or to see another generation take over a job that was held and performed well by a parent. For it truly spoke to the wonder of the American Dream and its staying power, and the importance of what people were building. But as the years rolled along, that perception changed, and that expectation is no longer the priority it once was. Mainly because people began to understand, that this particular expectation, while novel in nature, really didn’t fulfill every single individual that took part in it. Because not everyone in America wants to be the successor to the family business, nor do they want to get into the same career field as their parents. They want their own path, their own passions, and that reality and the push to follow that edict, finally brought that old tradition to a close. To the point where we now ask… is it feasible or comfortable for children to follow in their parents’ footsteps in 2024? And it just so happens that the next episode of Lopez vs Lopez on NBC takes the time to answer that question. A feat that ‘Lopez vs Moving On’ accomplishes by offering up quite the surprise. In that, the family learned early on in this episode, that Mayan lost her job as a vet tech and was keeping that revelation quiet to not bring about panic from her mother and because she was convinced, she would quickly find a new job. But alas, the 2024 market in the show resembles the real one, and that left Mayan in a tough place. Wherein her only opportunity to provide for her family, was to join the family business and help it grow and well, this segment really did explain why this old tradition died. Simply because the old guard and the new guard clashed often about what path was the right path, and how best to run the business, making it seem as though… this particular path was nothing more than a bad idea in Modern America. But after things cooled down, and Mayan was able to showcase what innovation could do for Lop E.Z. Movers, specifically… the kind of money they could make through adding technology… it became apparent that Mayan would be a valuable addition to the business and could in fact, work with her father. But what mattered more here, was that this journey made it clear… that yes, it is still possible for children to follow an ancient edict, provided of course… they are allowed to do more than keep the status quo. For if a child can innovate and grow the business and make it more, than it used to be, they can find value in it, own it in their own special way and enjoy a sense of fulfillment. All of which made for a unique episode for certain… one that explored a new avenue for this series. Since it really hasn’t explored tradition in this manner, but this examination was welcome none the less. Because this is something that pops up in American life, and by going this route, the show further hammers home that this is a story about the American experience we share in. In fact, this episode went above and beyond in such matters since it also pondered upon having trust and faith in our loved ones, as evidenced by the journey that Rosie and Quinten went upon here and well… it’s important to point out why that matters. For this is a show designed to demystify stereotypes and show how we all are one, and what better way to do that, than with a story that is steeped in American traditions and challenges. The kind we have all experienced, or will experience, in some form or fashion. Until next time. Watch ‘Lopez vs Lopez’

It is definitely safe to say that modern society treats folks that are eager to find sobriety in life, in a supremely unique and confusing manner. Because the instant that decision is made, everyone in their lives supports it and offers words of kindness and encouragement. For they want that individual to be free of the spell that drugs and/or alcohol cast upon a person and they will indeed prop that person up and push them to find sobriety. Yet at the same time, once the process to get sober starts, that support somewhat fades. For we also tend to believe that sobriety and the quest for it, is a supremely personal quest, one that only an addict can go upon and requires the support of fellow addicts and well, that’s problematic for certain. Because that’s not what a former addict needs. They in fact, need the people that they care about, and their ear and their support. Because getting sober is a scary journey, filled with doubt and pratfalls thanks to other societal issues and well, this is all top of mind today, simply because it served as the focal theme of the season two premiere of Lopez vs Lopez on NBC. For ‘Lopez vs Sobriety’ saw George fulfilling his promise to become sober and he was in fact, doing well. Because he was taking his treatment seriously, he listened to his sponsor, and he was even starting to recognize what addiction looks like in other forms. Which brought about a bit of conflict in the house, since George did call those habits out amongst his family members, and even challenged them to perhaps try and shake them to better understand his journey. Which was in fact, quite difficult. Because George was in uncharted territory, emotionally and mentally and he was scared. Scared that he might fail, scared that he might not be strong enough to complete this mission and outright he felt alone in his quest, and he also had to deal with some surprises in his journey. For a father/daughter dinner, one designed to help them reconnect and find common ground, just happened to be at one of George’s old watering holes. A move designed to help him face the past, but what he was not prepared for, was the irresponsibility of the staff. For the waitress knew of the legend of George and rather than respect his sobriety when he made it clear his drinking days were over… she handed him a drink. Which put George in a low place, one where he spoke honestly to his daughter and those very fears. All of which brought forth a powerful exploration regarding how we genuinely treat people trying to get sober. Because they are in fact, cast off to their own devices and their wishes to be free from booze or drugs aren’t always respected out of the strange respect and almost… worship… we harbor regarding drinking prowess and the drink itself, and this is problematic. Because clearly, what folks in recovery need, is more than just AA meetings and therapy, and support from folks who have done the work. They need understanding and grace and support from their family, and kind words and the belief that they can do this. Because they are taking part in a powerful and grand journey of healing and that requires love over anything else. Love that thankfully, George enjoyed at the end of the story. Since he and Mayan were able to come to an understanding reading the difficulty of his journey. If anything, all of these elements made, for a stellar season two premiere. Because this is the kind of intelligent plot, put through a comedic lens, that we’ve come to expect from this series, and what a powerful and intelligent way to kick off the year, by exploring a very real problem and struggle that people go through and how best to tackle it and well, it really doesn’t get much better than that. Not to mention, the laughs were simply top notch here, especially how the family responded to George’s challenge about their own addictions, and it was utterly amazing to see Gabriel Iglesias pop up here as part of George’s support network and well, all this does is leave us eager for more. More of the laughs and more of the incredible life lessons this show continues to send our way. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Truly, there are few movie franchises that have captivated us over the past decade or so in a powerful manner, more than The Hunger Games. For this unique dystopia story, based on the series of novels by Suzanne Collins simply grabbed hold of us with its incredible story, incredible setting, and outright majestic characters. Since they harbor qualities, we relate to, and they give us reason to believe in them, and of course… we have no problem cheering for them to topple the evil in front of them. Simply because Panem represents the worst of us. But of course, our fascination with this franchise goes beyond the core concepts that drew us in, for the world-building of Panem is something that calls to us often. For we’ve long been curious how it was founded, and why it transformed into the nightmare that Katniss Everdeen had to fight against and well, we got some answers regarding that last fall when The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes arrived in theaters. But alas, not everyone received those answers because not everyone had the chance to see it, but thankfully, STARZ is working to fix that. Since they let it be known today that this feature will air exclusively on STARZ starting on May 14th of this year, and well… to properly offer this news the respect it deserves, here are all the details regarding this announcement and a promo to boot, as we prepare to return to Panem and explore it further, only on STARZ. ‘ STARZ is pleased to announce it will be the exclusive home to Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes beginning May 14, when it begins streaming on the STARZ app. It will premiere on the STARZ channel at 9:00 pm ET. The film, a fascinating prequel to the immensely popular Hunger Games franchise, details Coriolanus Snow's life as a young mentor looking to make a name for himself, nearly 70 years before he became the villainous President Snow we all know from Katniss Everdeen’s adventures. Starring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was released in theaters in November 2023 and grossed over $338 million worldwide. The Hunger Games franchise has grossed over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office. Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler), the girls' tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake. Directed by Francis Lawrence, The Hunger Games franchise stars Tom Blyth (Benediction), Golden Globe® winner Rachel Zegler (Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, West Side Story, 2022), Emmy® Award winner Peter Dinklage (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, “Game of Thrones,” 2019), Hunter Schafer (“Euphoria”), Josh Andrés Rivera (West Side Story), Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City), and EGOT winner Viola Davis (Emmy® for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, “How to Get Away with Murder,” 2015; GRAMMY® for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording, Finding Me, 2023; Oscar® for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Fences, 2017; Tony® for Best Actress (Leading Role - Play), Fences, 2010).
