One particular aspect of humanity that is quite fascinating, is that we are all aligned on our vision for our future and our lives. For we all expect to grow old with someone we love and find a career we enjoy and of course… spend as much time with our family as possible as the years roll along. Because family means a lot to us and has a huge impact upon us, and we hope to use the time we have on this Earth to properly enjoy the memories and meaning that provides. Which is why we often work to fix bad blood with family members, to forge that peace and make those memories. But alas, that vision is hard to maintain. Because sometimes… we don’t find our career path right away, true love can be elusive and of course… family members leave us and head into whatever waits for us beyond. Sometimes it happens because it is their time to go, other times it happens because they force fate’s hand with their life choices, and well… the latter of those possibilities is one that motivates us… to step in as needed. To try and help those ailing family members enjoy every waking moment of life, they can, and well… that particular process is top of mind today, simply because that’s what Mayan went through in the season one finale of Lopez vs Lopez on NBC. For ‘Lopez vs Last Call’ is a story that saw Mayan and the rest of her family receive a wakeup call regarding George and his excessive drinking. Courtesy of the fact that George went viral for trying to get into the neighbor’s house whilst black out drunk, and that scared Mayan to no end. Because that made it clear to her, that her dad really did have a drinking problem and if he didn’t stop with it soon, there was a chance that he could depart this plane of existence before getting the chance to see Chance grow into a thriving and productive man. So… she stepped in with a touch of deception to get George a physical. Which he passed. But once he learned of the sneaky nature in which Mayan made him see a doctor, his drinking went from bad to worse. Mainly because… he revealed to Oscar that he had a lot of childhood trauma and trust issues and well… a few drinks kept that stuff at bay. But on this night, with his unresolved trauma resurgent… George went harder than usual and cracked his head open and lost a lot of blood. Which prompted Mayan to go the extra mile and hold an intervention. Which went about as well as one might expect. Since George took it with a grain of salt and saw his drinking as nothing of concern. But a powerful moment, wherein little Chance pretended to be his grandfather for a school presentation, complete with an empty beer bottle and discussions of how much George drank in a single day, gave George hard perspective. The kind that informed him that he had a problem and things needed to change or Mayan’s concern would come to life and well… George changed course and put down the booze for a change. All of which… hammered home the importance of watching out for our loved ones and working with them to solve the problems we can… so that we can all enjoy the majesty of life and the wonder of family and that made for a beautiful ending to this episode and to this season. Simply because, it reaffirmed the fact that this is a story about family, and the work that goes into keeping one together, regardless of past actions of other members mistakes. Porque familia lo es todo, and we should do everything we can to keep them close if possible. For we only get one and we only get so much time with them, and this show deserves all of our gratitude for pointing that out this season and for exploring and celebrating Latino/Latinx culture along the way to for helping Latino people be seen in an honest light on television… and for just giving us great storytelling. The kind viewed through a humorous lens to make the tough stuff a little easier to ponder upon and hopefully this show is granted a second season and beyond. Because it is an important show, and it is a powerful one about the human condition and family and what better way to learn more about all of that… than through the eyes of this family. Until next time.
