If there is one question that is on the mind of every fan that tunes in to bid farewell to their favorite show via its finale, it would have to be… how is it going to end? Simply because… the best shows out there keep us guessing and keep us eager to learn, and we simply must know how the whole thing comes together and of course… we hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Because endings are hard and time and time again, we’ve seen finales miss the landing and offer up a farewell that is hotly debated or reviled. But now and again, finales come along that answer that question with a simple answer. In that, it will end in a beautiful and satisfying and if needed, epic manner and well… that answer applies to the series finale of La Brea on NBC. For ‘The Road Home, Part 2’ brought everything home in an amazing manner. The kind that saw our heroes save their families and the family they’ve created in 10,000 B.C. over the past three seasons. And we also saw them defeat evil in the most incredible way imaginable. By using a freakin’ Tyrannosaurs Rex to tear down the forces at Ladera Air Force Base, and by working as a unit to forge an epic path home. All of which brought about resolution, wonder and the reunions we were waiting for. But of course, you know those plot points, you watched it like we did at home last night and loved it. So, instead of revisiting all of that in detail… let’s talk about how exactly all of those elements came together in the script, since writer/creator David Appelbaum clearly used three key tenets of this story to bring everything home. After all this was… at its core, a finale about family. About the family we choose, the family we inherit, and how important family is to us, and what it means to fight for it. Because to let it disappear in this life, stunts us, leaves us complacent and hollow, and that is why we should in fact fight for it, do everything we must to preserve it. So, that we can find strength from it, and enjoy its wonder. And this episode really brought that home, and brought together a three-year journey regarding that, since so many characters did not have that when they first started this journey, and it was just wonderful to see that plot point come about full circle and offer up growth and closure for so many.
Not to mention, this episode was epic in nature. Which is also something we’ve come to love from this show and without any epic stuff here, what a waste this episode would have been. But Mister Appelbaum just leaned into the epic and took us on a swirling journey through three time periods and gave us everything we wanted and more. A kickass finale, a big and epic fight that saw evil be vanquished through and through, and once again… that Rexy. That was the stuff of legend. But more importantly, having epic stuffs pop up here, really spoke to how this finale was designed to really celebrate everything people love about this show, which is why the most important element present here should come as no surprise.
Because early on, this show made it clear, that a voyage to 10,000 B.C., away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and the chaos of the traps we fall into… was a second chance for these fine people. A chance to look at their lives and ponder upon what they might do differently, and here… that journey was realized, and that’s huge. Because we saw growth, real growth take place, and second chances be granted, which are so rare in this life, and that really brought this journey to a place that felt complete and sent a message our way as well. Because it informed us that no matter the circumstances, and no matter the pressure… if we choose to be better and put in the work… we can be the person we’ve always wanted to be. Which is an amazing lesson to find, in this perfect series finale. One that brought the saga to a close in an emotional and beautiful manner and well… all we can do now, is offer thanks. Thanks to David Appelbaum for shepherding three lovely seasons of this wondrous show, and thanks to the incredible cast and crew. For giving it their all week in and week and adding real gravity and humanity to a story so fantastical. But their work is a testament to understanding the vision of the series, and the vision of this finale, and we cannot thank the cast and David enough for also taking the time to speak with us and share their passion for this project. And well… that is sadly… all there is to say about this wondrous and refreshing show. One that took an original concept and ran with it and wowed us every single step of the way. Watch ‘La Brea’
