Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the final season of La Brea on NBC has been unconventional in nature. For it has focused heavily on character arcs and providing the good people in this world with closure, and it’s done a wonderful job of setting the stage for a grand fight to bring home loved ones and explore mysteries about this whole mess. But eventually, there are some concepts and familiar paths that all shows must take when they head off the airwaves. In that, they must bring forth an epic conclusion in an epic manner, and well, as it turns out… the moment to kick things into high gear and provide us with a stunning story, arrived this week. For ‘The Road Home, Part 1’ was a tour de force filled with big moments and a big goodbye, all of which came about… by way of Gavin putting two and two together about Maya. Because she perfectly timed her sneaky little entrance after a threatening message came forth about the microchip and Eve’s fate. Which prompted Gavin to lure Maya out into the open wherein he could prove, she was the messenger, and she wasn’t really there to help anyone. Which of course… he did, with Ty and Sam’s help, and she of course… got away by biding her time. But not without a scare since Helena appeared and put down a few of Maya’s lackeys to keep Gavin and his friends safe, and she even offered help in getting Gavin to Ladera Air Force Base to save Eve and stop this madness. While they all laid in pursuit however, some other big surprises came forth back at The Fort. For Veronica was working hard to prepare for a big council meeting and came to discover that someone had a direct line to Ladera. Which meant a traitor was in their midst and when confronted with this in the middle of a council meeting that was quickly turning against the newcomers, Ruth bailed. But thankfully Lucas and Veronica were quick to follow her and learn that she was in fact, covering for someone else. Specifically, Leyla. Who wanted out and wanted to take Izzy with her. Only to learn that Izzy had no such desire, even more so after discovering that Maya and her team had brought trouble her father’s way. But thankfully, a confrontation with Leyla led to her making it right by giving Lucas the codes to the radio, to help them see what kind of trouble Gavin’s team was in, so they knew how best to help.
While they set out to save Gavin and his squad, we were able to learn that our beloved Scott didn’t die, he was in a cell block with Levi, and had no idea why he was spared. But eventually he came to learn through one shocking surprise. In that, Levi was part of the Ladera crew, and joined up ages ago… but came to realize they were the bad guys and he was now eager to stop this madness before it could go any further. He just needed to coach Scott on how best to buy himself the most time possible regarding his paper, since that was a big key to all of this, so that he could be transferred to a different holding facility, with Eve no less and well… that’s when this story took quite the sorrowful and unfortunate turn.
Because moving Scott to his new unfortunate home, brought everyone together and that meant, trouble was on the horizon. Because there was a group of soldiers ready to ambush Gavin’s band of heroes, and that prompted Levi to ask Izzy and her team to stand back so he could properly distract and stop the ambush before it could start. Which Levi was… successful at making happen. But at a great cost. For while he did indeed save all the lives, he didn’t save his own. He took a bullet and passed away. But not before finally making peace with Gavin and his life through that selfless act, and once goodbyes were offered… did the set up for the grand finale get underway. Since our heroes came to learn, that the big-time detention center that Maya prizes is hidden away in 1965, and they of course went through that gateway… to save lives and bring an end to Maya’s machinations. All of which genuinely brought forth… one epic tale. For we had action, adventure, and surprises galore and of course… some stunning heartbreak. Since Levi’s journey is complete and he will be missed, and a round of applause is in order for Nicholas Gonzalez’s magnificent performance here, since he truly moved us. And well, now that a farewell has taken place and our heroes are off to challenges unknown, all we can do now is revel in this epic and intense tale and steel our nerves for one more farewell. For this is it, the series finale of this beloved and amazing series is all that remains, and it will undoubtedly be a powerhouse and epic affair, one that should move us and take our breath away. Until next time. Watch ‘La Brea’
