Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked at length about what it takes to bring down a person that weaponizes hope and suffering to get ahead in life. For that is precisely what the hit Peacock series, Dr. Death, has focused upon and well… after spending a fair chunk of time examining the origins of doubt that lead to whistleblowing, and the difficult conundrum that accompanies calling someone out for their actions, the next episode in this storied saga took the time to deeply examine… what it looks like to finally stand tall against injustice, and how that process can be difficult in nature. For ‘Compassionate Uses’ made it clear that sometimes… to stand up to men that abuse their power, lots of work must go into finding the right words to say. Which for our trio of doctors, involved having every bit of research in front of them. Right down to understanding exactly what the implant does to a person. Which was it turned out, was create necrotic flesh. Mainly because… with no blood flowing between bits of trachea, what remained died and rotted away. Giving rise to the horrible life so many endured. So, that prompted the trio to put together a powerhouse report. One that would break down the failures in the surgery and the patients to hold Paolo to account. While they were doing that, Benita was handling her own investigation and whistleblowing stateside. For she finally had clear audio of Paolo speaking to his failures and she had a story, so she pitched it to any editor she knew, with only one really listening to her story… with caveats of course. Because Percy really didn’t care about the science. He just saw what the public would see, a possible story from a jilted lover that wanted nothing but revenge, but one that would be paid attention to if the lies in the relationship were focused upon. Which Benita was unsure of doing until she discovered Paolo was still in contact with her daughter, and sowing discourse amongst the two of them. Which prompted her to go for it and tell her story. Which is when we came to learn, that telling the truth is no easy process. Especially when hope is strong and there is the potential of a real breakthrough in someone’s mind. Because once the report hit, our heroic doctors were under fire and under scrutiny because so many felt they were damaging hope, damaging reputations, because of the awe that Paolo inspired. Giving rise to the reality that holding him to account would be no easy task, and even Benita learned of this difficulty as well. Since Percy made it clear that he already did his due diligence as an editor and spoke to the other party to have the full story. Leaving her to wonder if by chance… this piece would do nothing. Not to mention, Paolo himself escalated matters by working with the board to have his co-workers arrested out of the belief that they had somehow violated the law. Setting the stage for quite the finale. One where somehow, the truth must prevail, and justice must be served. For we know now that Paolo did indeed face the music. The only question that remains now… is how did that happen? For overcoming these kinds of odds are difficult and terrifying. But when the cause is true, and the facts are overwhelming, bad deeds are brought to bear and it will be supremely interesting to see how these people overcome the odds and make that happen in the show’s season two finale. Until next time. Watch ‘Dr. Death’
