For the most part, crime stories, specifically ones about drug kingpins and their rise and fall... tend to offer up certain tropes when it comes to the kingpin in question. In that, they are ruthless, and laser focused, and their desire to be a God of sorts, is what propels them to the top. Wherein their shortsightedness and at times, inability to look beyond their own ego, brings them to their knees. Which are tropes that are designed to speak to the ills of the drug trade and turn us off to them by showing us less than intelligent individuals that stumble into fortune and embrace failure. But let’s be honest… they can’t be that dumb, and they cannot be that nearsighted in nature. Because these men tend to rule for a very long time, and some, require special help in being brought to justice and thankfully, there is a franchise that is trying to push this world of stories away from that nonsense. Which has made the Power Universe on STARZ quite refreshing in nature, since it has presented its characters as supremely human and flawed, instead of caricatures, and it’s presented the trade as something unsavory and difficult, and that choice and dedication goes into keeping people there, alongside the potential of the payout. And now, thanks to the season two finale of Power Book IV: Force, we finally have a better look at what really makes a kingpin tick and what really seats them in the throne that they seek. For ‘Power, Powder, Respect’ saw Tommy Egan and others in this town, all make their grand power play for control of the city. Since Claudia was ready to stake her claim as Mirkovic’s right-hand commander, and of course… Miguel was ready to make moves to take out Tommy and solidify his standing at Ché’s side. Not to mention, Vic was ready to leave the business, and sell Tommy and CBI out, and his sister too, in order to enjoy a quiet life away from trouble and drugs. Which are issues and challenges that are supremely realistic in nature and not something that a boneheaded kingpin could muscle their way into and quickly control. No, it requires a keen mind that understands that the drug trade is a game of chess, and not checkers. Where every move has to be carefully examined and where every player on the board… has to be understood. Their strengths, their weaknesses, and what will motivate them all goes into the game as well. Not to mention, that same mind has to think three steps ahead and ponder upon every possible outcome. Which means, you’re looking at a genius that has just so happened to choose the game over rocket science and political aspirations and well, in this tale we learned that description matches Tommy Egan to a tee. That’s not to say we never thought of him as savvy, it’s just… none of us every really understood his real brilliance until this episode.
Because… Tommy and CBI finally took over Chicago and for the most part, Tommy’s enemies paid and paid dearly. All because he played chess masterfully in this tale. For instance, rather than murder Vic with impunity and just slaughter Miguel and ascend to Ché’s side quickly, he truly moved the pieces about to have so many other problems take care of themselves. Such as using Vic to enact his revenge against Claudia. For Tommy fed information about her cartel meeting to Vic. Who in turn sent that over to the state and the Feds, and that… led to Mirkovic and Claudia ending up behind bars. Effectively shutting down the Serbian Mob in Chicago and putting Claudia into a life of fear, where daily attacks and suffering was on the menu. All because Tommy saw exactly how to maneuver the right people into the right position to pay.
Plus, he made Vic fear for his life rather than kill him. Not to exact revenge, but to control. For a scared informant could come in handy and would gladly play both sides when their life was on the line and of course… since Tommy was the one to bring down the Serbian Mob, and not Miguel, he was handed to the keys to the kingdom and given way more power and powder to gain that respect in the streets. Which meant, just like that… he was a true kingpin. One that owned the city and played just about everyone akin to a fiddle. Making this a masterful ending and one that really allowed for us to respect Tommy like never before. Because he really did run the game on everyone and scheme his way to the top. But of course, he is only human, and not every outcome can be schemed out. Which did lead to some trouble in this tale. Since D-Mac once again stirred the pot because he wanted so desperately to be liked and accepted, and that might lead to his end down the line. Since Jenard opted to handle the fallout of the body D-Mac caught, and made some deals that could bring some hard suffering to Tommy’s family. But there was no way to account for a teenage kid in need of purpose screwing things up. Not to mention, there was one particular player that understood bombast and threats and making hard moves was the wrong thing to do when trying to battle Tommy’s sharp mind, and that the long game had its benefits for a counteroffensive as well. Which was why Shanti sent over the picture that Jenard took of that blooming love affair. To bring about a measure of revenge and control of her own, but that too… is a miscalculation. For one does not mess with a kingpin’s love. Plus, those weren’t the only unforeseen surprises present in this tale. For Tommy was also ill prepared to handle the fact that not everyone wants in on the life. Since JP did turn his back on Mister Egan for how things turned out with D-Mac and how Tommy almost let Kate die because of those deep-rooted traumas he has never dealt with, and likely never will. All of which added a bit of bitterness to Tommy’s big victory but make no mistake about it… those moments did not overshadow what was… an incredible season finale. Because this was a game changer, one that truly let Tommy F*cking Egan shine like never before, and offered us incredible insight into his mind, all while bringing together two years of storytelling in a masterful manner. And of course, hopefully we get a third season announcement for the show, soon. Because we simply cannot wait to see what lies ahead for Chicago’s newest kingpin. Watch ‘Power Book IV: Force’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Finale of ‘Loki’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
It is definitely safe to say, that each and every one of us, believe that redemption is something attainable in this life and that it offers up a special package of incentives for those who pursue it. Such as incredible internal peace. The kind that can only be achieved by righting a wrong. Plus, we also believe it will make our lives fulfilling and joyous as well. Because we’ve done something special, respectful, and beautiful and well… it doesn’t take long for us to learn that the road to redemption is no easy path, and the end result of obtaining it, may not be as incentive laden as we would like. Which are hard truths that the trickster-God Loki came to learn in the season two finale of Loki on Disney+. For ‘Glorious Purpose’ saw Loki return to the end of the TVA and ponder deeply upon what went wrong it that moment. Because that moment of failure, was where salvation and redemption waited for Loki, and if he could figure out what went wrong, and right it… he would save everything. Be the hero at last and see a Loki win the day. So, he dedicated himself to the cause like never before. First by learning how Miss Minutes and Renslayer wasted precious time that was needed for repairs, and that O.B. and Timely needed as much help as possible in making those repairs happen quickly. So, he spent centuries learning about engineering and science and when everything aligned… he kept the villains at bay, helped the repair move along and saw what should have been a victory. For Victor lived, the Loom was expanding, and redemption was just an inch away. But alas, the Loom collapsed again, and this time around, everyone was able to learn… that it would never handle the infinite timelines the branching effect was creating. Which meant, that if Loki really wanted to stop this from ever reaching fruition, he had to go to another source-point in time. Specifically, the day that Sylvie killed He Who Remains. For stopping that act, would bring salvation. But alas, it became clear through a devastating discussion with Kang… that Sylvie’s death was the only way to make that happen, and Loki couldn’t reconcile that. But that talk did teach him a powerful lesson. In that, he finally began to understand the ugly nature of redemption and he learned a great deal about what had to happen in order to obtain it. In that, true redemption… means going above and beyond to right that wrong, and sometimes… that includes offering up a powerful sacrifice on a more personal level. For redemption is a personal quest born from personal mistakes and well… that’s when Loki finally realized what needed to happen to keep the universe safe and to avoid the demands of a time tyrant. Which brought him back to that fateful day once again, wherein he asked no one to go out there but himself. Because he knew that the Loom and Kang’s designs had to be destroyed so that something new could be born from it. Where a new mind could in fact… shape a multiverse and give everyone their shot at a free life and a better tomorrow, and to properly redeem himself… Loki had to be the man to make all of that happen. So, he accepted that glorious purpose, and personally fueled the wonder of infinite possibilities, for all time, always. Giving him the win, he wanted, the redemption he sought but not the peace necessarily. But as mentioned before, redemption isn’t always what we expect it to be. But in the end, Loki found it, and gave everyone a chance to thrive, and a chance at real freedom and understanding. Which made, for one powerful and incredible finale. One that truly closed the book on a long and winding journey for this trickster in a manner that was satisfying, beautiful and if this is where the story ends, well that’s just fine. Because it is just so rare in this life and in stories, to see someone really find true redemption. But the right man found it, and hopefully the knowledge that lives are thriving because of his choice… will eventually give Loki the internal peace he’s craved and make his eternity and new purpose in life, all the more worthwhile. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Four Premiere of ‘For All Mankind’. To revisit the Season Four Finale, clickhere.
Over the course of its illustrious run, the Apple TV+ series, For All Mankind, has done a phenomenal job of exploring some fascinating topics regarding the human condition. For it has pondered upon how failure can in fact, be a great motivator and push us to new heights. How we can rise above our ugliest traits and accomplish wonders and how… regardless of the twists and turns society takes… we can find unity and we can forge ahead together if we’re willing to put the nonsense aside, and for its fourth season, the show is now ready to ponder deeply upon other important matters we face in life. Such as how we reconcile what life takes from us, and how hard a process that can be, and the impact it can have upon us, as evidenced by the show’s season four premiere. For ‘Glasnost’ pondered deeply upon such matters… after once again offering up the show’s trademark time jump. For we were able to see what the 1990s and early 2000s looked like with mankind living on the surface of Mars, and they were indeed salad days, the kind that allowed for Al Gore to claim the presidency as he did not in our particular timeline, and well, the majesty of this new era didn’t end there. Because having a thriving human colony on another planet, prompted ingenuity and a realization that perhaps we don’t have to completely gore Earth of natural resources. That the stars would supply everyone with what was needed and that brought about, one powerful moment in this story, one that once again… is only on the drawing board in our world. Wherein, Admiral Ed Baldwin led a group of astronauts and cosmonauts to a remote asteroid. One rich in everything humanity might need. And the plan was to tie it down, tow it back to Mars, and mine it for Mars, Luna, and Earth, and well… that’s something that’s only been discussed in the real world. Alongside planting a small base upon one, as a launching point for a mission to Europa and the fringes of our solar system. Which made for a proud and uplifting moment, and a heartbreaking one. All of which involved Colonel Grigory Kuznetsov. For he was the first human to stand on an asteroid, and he also died atop one. For the mission failed, and his and another life was lost and that… is when this episode took the time to begin to ponder upon the heavier matters, we made mention of a moment ago. Because this… this was eerily reminiscent of what happened in the 1990s at JSC, and that brought about some interesting truths for heroes of the last generation. Because clearly, Ed, Danielle, even Aleida, struggled mightily with death and suffering in their world again. Giving rise to the reality that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder exists in this timeline as well, and one parallel we share… is that neither Earth was really addressing such matters in 2003. It was about being strong then, pushing ahead when clearly… not everyone can. Since Danielle left the service as quickly as she could to avoid those echoes, and Ed clearly has a hard desire to stay amogst the stars to not deal with the pain. Plus we even saw PTSD in live action here since Aleida froze when old wounds were opened again by disaster. Not to mention, even Margot felt some measure and need to react from her new home in Moscow, and well… this was brilliant to see in a sci-fi show. Since it is still something of a taboo topic, one that needs to have its stigma removed. Because PTSD is real, and it has a grave impact upon people when it goes unaddressed, and this show has the opportunity to explore, what our future might look like if we finally see people confront and fix it. But while that gives us a lot to look forward to from a depth standpoint, there are still more wonders ahead for this season. Since the introduction of Miles Dale is clearly designed to explore the economic potential of interstellar mining, and well, in the end, this was… an amazing premiere. One that made it clear that we are at a crossroads for this story. Where the past and the present will finally collide, and the lasting impact of decades of interstellar travel and colonization will be explored in every way imaginable, and that is going to make for an incredible season. One that will be deep, powerful, and undoubtedly stunning as this show continues to showcase the wonder and the struggle of life amongst the stars. Until next time. Watch ‘For All Mankind’
Written by John Edward Betancourt It wasn’t that long ago, that STARZ piqued our interest with quite the fascinating announcement. In that, the network was ready to return to the world of Spartacus, a series that helped put STARZ on the map and was beloved by fans around the globe. And what made us so curious about this announcement, was that we received very little details about that new show. Just that STARZ wanted a new story in this universe. Which of course, put the fans into a frenzy, wherein speculation ran rampant in our minds, courtesy of our imaginations, since they pondered upon what the next chapter in this saga could and would focus upon. But thankfully, we no longer have to speculate. For Steven S. DeKnight and STARZ have finally settled upon what comes next for the saga and they made it known today that Spartacus: House of Ashur has received a green light from the network. Which means, that Ashur is back, and he will be played by Nick Tarabay once again, and… he’s back via a fascinating ‘what if?’ story. But most important of all, we’re going back to this wonderous universe and well, since you’re eager to learn more about this new show… here are all the details on House of Ashur (courtesy of STARZ) to tide you over until more news arrives. ‘STARZ announced today it has greenlit ten episodes of “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a drama series that will expand on its groundbreaking show “Spartacus,” one of STARZ’s most celebrated franchises, which aired for four seasons on the platform. DeKnight (“Daredevil”) serves as showrunner and executive producer. “Spartacus: House of Ashur” will be a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit. The series poses the question: what if Ashur, played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of “Spartacus: Vengeance?” And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion? “A decade ago the groundbreaking original ‘Spartacus’ captivated viewers worldwide and we’re excited to deliver more enthralling, high-octane drama that our fervent fans have been anticipating,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming, STARZ. “It is an honor to team up with Steven again as he expands upon the storytelling within this thrilling, action-packed universe.” “To be afforded the opportunity to return a decade later to a series you loved is such a rare, wonderful opportunity,” said Steven S. DeKnight. “I could not be more excited to craft this next chapter in the Spartacus saga with STARZ, Lionsgate, and the incomparable Nick Tarabay." “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” debuted on STARZ in 2010 and was followed by a prequel series chapter “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” in 2011 and two additional series “Spartacus: Vengeance” in 2012 and “Spartacus: War of the Damned” in 2013. The project will be produced by Lionsgate Television for STARZ. Karen Bailey will oversee the series on behalf of STARZ. Jocelyn Sabo will oversee for Lionsgate Television. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Finale of ‘Almost Paradise’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Truly, the penultimate episode of season two of Almost Paradise on Amazon Freevee, set the stage for one epic showdown between good and evil. For Jace Vargas made it clear that he was going to come after Alex Walker with every fiber of his being, from behind bars no less. And his decision to send a trained killer after Alex, and corrupt a burgeoning love between Alex and Ann, seemed to steel our hero like never before. As though he was going to find a way to get close to Jace and end this once for and all, and wouldn’t you know it? That is indeed exactly what the show opted to lean into for its season two finale. For ‘Brigade’ did indeed put Alex and Jace in the same space to finally settle old scores, but in the most unique and refreshing way imaginable of course. Because this is a show that doesn’t like to follow traditional convention for crime dramas and action stories. It wants to surprise us and impress us, and it accomplished that, by opening up with a stunning surprise. Wherein Alex was arrested at Kai’s going away party and thrown in the same jail as Jace Vargas. All of which left Ernesto and Kai besides themselves. For Alex Walker was the man that brought criminals down, and he would never abide by their playbook. But the story went that the ranch was in trouble, so was the shop, so Alex snapped and did illegal things to keep his life afloat. But that didn’t sit right with this duo, they knew that even at his lowest, Alex wouldn’t cross that line, and despite being told stay away from the case, they refused and stepped in and found their way into the prison to help protect Alex. For they knew that Jace would bring great harm to him and well, once they arrived, more surprises came into play. Because it turned out that their suspicions were correct, that Alex wasn’t a crook. He was undercover, to try and figure out how Jace was working with such freedom. Because someone had to be helping him, and with a little assist from Ernesto and Kai, they came to learn that yes, someone on the inside was giving Jace freedom in exchange for incredible access to the island’s underworld network, and it was the warden who was behind this all. Which meant that justice was served, and Alex was released. But what mattered more, was the fact that Alex and Jace finally had the showdown we were waiting for before he returned to his everyday life. But of course, since we mentioned this was handled in a non-traditional manner, there was no bloody fight here complete with inspiring speeches, just a hard lesson in what gives men like Jace power to begin with. In that, guys like him… are weak really and need to be admired and fawned over, and only then can express a sense of confidence and power, and when that is robbed from them… they’re a nobody, and Alex knew this from the get-go and exposed ol’ Jace. Which ruined his standing as the head honcho of this jail and removed him from having any power over Alex ever again. Giving rise to a peaceful victory for the hero, one that allowed for Alex to look ahead toward the future. One that will see him stay on the island. Since he sold the ranch and doubled down on the Gift Shop, so he could keep healing and living his life in this healthy manner filled with balance. And of course, his decision to stay prompted Kai to stay. So, she could be close to someone we now know she deeply loves, and those feelings are obviously mutual. That means, we’re looking at a hopeful tomorrow for Alex, and his friends… wherein bonds will be strengthened, and lives will be enriched and well, all of this made for a satisfying ending to a satisfying season of storytelling. One that featured new and big ideas, great storytelling, and simply incredible character growth. The kind that saw good people working to be the best version of themselves, and that’s inspiring and hopefully, we get good news from Amazon Freevee regarding a third season soon. Because we need to see what these characters are capable of at their absolute best, and we simply need more… of this refreshing and magnificent series. Until next time. Watch ‘Almost Paradise’
Please enjoy a sneak peek of the season two finale of Power Book IV: Force, which debuts on STARZ tomorrow, 11/10/23! Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Three Finale of ‘The Morning Show’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
At some point or another in our lives, each and every one of us will set out… to do something special, something noble. Often times, that will involve, righting some kind of massive wrong. For that is a simple way to make something wonderful happen and to cement one’s legacy and sadly, it doesn’t take long for us to learn… that such an act is no easy task. Because fixing that, takes more than good intentions and a can-do attitude, especially when it comes to say… a business that screwed up badly. It can take years of work, to ensure that the culture changes and that such darkness never happens again, and that… can help us to lose ourselves along the way. Because it’s hard to enact that level of change and life can take us wild places, and well… that begs the question… how then to do we stay on track and achieve our ultimate goal? Well… there’s no easy answer to that. Especially in business. But there are answers to that question. Some of which, people may not like. As was evidenced by the season three finale of The Morning Show on Apple TV+. For ‘The Overview Effect’ saw everything come to a head with the UBA/Hyperion merger and for two of the good people in this story, who wanted to right wrongs, they had to learn at the peak of this madness that sometimes… you have to acknowledge that you lost sight of your goals and failed and accept the consequences. Which is precisely where Cory and Bradley Jackson found themselves in this tale. Because Bradley knew, there was no more running from the FBI, no more running from her mistakes, for she abused what she set out to fix and needed to atone for that. Yet her understanding of this lesson was quick and simple, and sadly… it took Cory a little longer to get there. Because he was doing his damndest in this story to outmaneuver Paul and secure the original loan and torpedo what Paul had planned for the company. But alas, because he was so caught up in the thrill of piloting UBA, and of being the head honcho… he really did lose his edge and didn’t account for Paul’s laser focus and ability to undercut every single plan. Which prompted Cory to finally understand his mistakes, what he lost sight of and deal with whatever consequences came forth by not sticking to the plan.
But thankfully, this story wasn’t totally about losses and paying the piper when we lose sight of our goals. For this episode also took the time to teach us, that if the opportunity is still there to do good, and to make change… we can refocus and we can buckle down and save the day and do right, and Alex Levy is the one who learned this aspect of the lesson. For she came to learn that Paul was monitoring everyone to have an edge, and was in fact, not the good man she thought he was, and this plan would bring about disaster and pain and put Alex in a place where she wouldn’t be able to fix what she set out to fix. So, she refocused, went for broke and set up a deal with NBN. To merge and create a super network that would be grounded in honesty, integrity and pure journalism and that deal… went through… with a little pressing from Alex and Stella.
Simply because… Paul did need to pay the piper for his actions and understand he couldn’t use people akin to pawns, and he did and that led… to a vastly different tomorrow for so many. Wherein the future of the UBA and NBN lineups were up in the air and where… people began to move on. For Bradley stayed away to focus on atoning for her grievous decision, with her brother at her side no less. And Cory Ellison finally found himself not in charge of anything but his own life for a change, which put him in a strange spot that he wasn’t used to. And of course, Alex… was finally on course to really create an honest news organization. One grounded in everything she wanted to right years ago… and that made for a fascinating ending to this three-year journey. For it more or less blew the whole thing up. But that… is sometimes what we need in life to really enact change at an organization that is corrupt. Because when the rot gets into the foundation of a place, it is impossible to get out, so rebuilding is the only option. But it is safe to say that audiences didn’t expect this. But… bold moves are nothing new to this saga, since it swings for the fences often, so this is an ending that fits. That speaks to everything this show wants to accomplish and it will be interesting to see what lies ahead for this series in season four, now that its lead characters are scattered to the winds and moving onto new paths. Courtesy of an understanding that you cannot win them all, and that sometimes you need to be bold to make good happen in the world. Until next year. Watch ‘The Morning Show’
