It is definitely safe to say that the Disney+/Marvel series, Loki, was one of the more unique shows to air in the last couple of years. Courtesy of the fact that this series… defied convention really. For it took the villainous Loki and presented him in a vastly different light. One that was tragic in nature, giving us a different perspective regarding this trickster, that managed to humanize him and prompt us to root for him and enjoy his journey toward learning to love and accept himself. Not to mention, it presented us with an organization that looked as though it was ripped from the pages of a comic book, since the TVA was quite the outlandish and retro place, and filled with mystery and those two elements really did offer us a quirky show that was off the beaten path but also… supremely enjoyable. Not to mention, the show also introduced us to the next big bad in the MCU, Kang the Conqueror. Who came forth in the most unique manner possible, via fear and distrust and well, that amazing ending from ‘For All Time. Always.’ left us wondering what season two was going to look like. Since this story now had the potential to either take a more conventional road forward by having Loki battle the next great villain in this story… or… it could stay the course and keep things weird in all the right ways and at long last… we have our answer as to which way things are going to go. For yesterday saw the season two premiere drop on Disney+ and ‘Ouroboros’ quickly made it clear to us… that weird and unconventional storytelling will be the name of the game for season two, and that’s not a bad thing by any means. Because weird made for one compelling episode, one that deepened the mystery of Kang’s reach, while giving Loki focus for this new season. And it accomplished all of those goals, by picking up almost immediately after Loki was purged from the palace of He Who Remains and well… Loki came to understand that he wasn’t traversing the multiverse following the collapse of its borders, but that he was in essence, traveling through time. Which helped him to understand that Kang had a grip on that as well, and that drastic action needed to be taken to stop Kang’s reach from causing more trouble. Which in this instance, involved… chaos. Because despite showcasing the trouble at hand, there was no consensus within the TVA on a way forward. Just a desire to go after Sylvie and place blame upon her. Which meant, that Loki needed to stabilize his ability to jump and keep her safe while formulating a plan with Morbius as to how to save all of the multiverse from a monster. But of course… Loki needed to take one step at a time in such matters. And the priority here was to get the time jumps, or time slipping as it was officially referred to, to end. Which involved a delightful sequence involving a new character named Ouroboros, or O.B. as he liked to be called, who was played brilliant by Academy Award Winner Ke Huy Quan. Wherein O.B. deduced that the only way to keep Loki stable and in the fight, was to prune him from all other timelines, and focus his entity in the prime one. And in order to make that happen, Morbius had to step close to the source of the muiltverse, the Temporal Loom. To tether Loki to everything, which brought forth a thrilling and fun conclusion that saw Morbius risk his life for a new friend and saw Loki successful in his endeavors to stop slipping about the timestream. Checking one box off of his list in his fight to save all of time and multiverse space from a powerful, powerful monster. All of which made, for an unconventional season premiere. Since this episode didn’t really offer up a specific plot or build toward the fight. It was just chaos and panic, and a desperate battle to stabilize the moment… and it was great. Because it made for a fun and unpredictable ride, one that ended in an epic manner as well, with the good news that Sylvie might be okay for the time being since she’s hanging out at a McDonald’s in an alternate Oklahoma and well, in the end, this was just a delightful adventure through and through. One that really did entertain and offer up more of what we love about this series. And now that Loki has fixed his little problem and now that Sylvie is safe, it will be interesting to see what kind of plan comes together to combat Kang’s influence over the TVA, and whether or not that plan will be successful, when one considers the power and reach of the one known as the Conqueror. Until next time. Watch ‘Loki’

When we think of the word, tragedy, and all it entails, we think in negative terms. Because tragedy is supposed to engender sorrow and, in some cases, it can bring about fear, but it can serve as so much more. For it can be a wake-up call for some, or a chance at a grand opportunity for change in one’s life… as long as the person being impacted takes a moment to observe their situation and the tragedy at hand objectively and that of course… can lead to a happy ending. And well, that particular aspect of tragedy is top of mind today, simply because tragedy brought forth some positives in the next episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+. A feat that ‘Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place’ accomplished, by having a dark moment take place involving the Ferengi. For the strange vessel that has been wreaking havoc across the galaxy, had its first run-in with the Ferengi, at the behest of an ambitious Ferengi, who believed he had the lobes to do business with an enemy that was striking fear into the hearts of everyone. But alas, this mysterious entity cared not about gold-pressed latinum, it wanted chaos and devastation, and it laid that ship to waste. Which put all of Ferenginar on alert and prompted the Grand Nagus… to open negotiations with the Federation to become a member world. Which would provide Ferenginar with all the protections that other member worlds are afforded and that brought the U.S.S. Cerritos, and the U.S.S. Toronto to the Ferengi home world for the signing ceremony and that in turn… made it seem for a moment as though, a positive wouldn’t come out of this. After all, Rom was not himself. He was distracted and aloof and obsessed with Baseball, and it took Leeta, his First Clerk to set anything up and of course… Starfleet was so eager to make this happen that concessions were being made left and right that outright fleeced the Federation. Which prompted Captain Freeman to ponder upon what was actually happening here, and it dawned upon her, that this was a plot. One designed to see if the Federation was taking this application seriously and if it actually respected Ferenginar. Which prompted her to make some changes to the deal, the kind that showcased that the Federation could play ball with a planet like Ferenginar, and that confirmed that her suspicions were correct. Since Rom dropped the act, signed the standard charter, and thanked her for offering respect to his world. Giving rise to real wonder from tragedy since new allies were forged out of sorrow.
But while it was amazing to see that play out, this is of course a comedy show, and there were shenanigans to be had in this story, courtesy of an away team visit from the Lower Deckers. For they were tasked with updating the Federation’s travel guide regarding this world, and that meant… Tendi and Ruthy had to pose as a couple to get some information on dating hot spots on this world. Which led to all kinds of awkward moments for them since they are indeed as platonic as it gets, and Boims? Well, he failed at his mission because he fell in love with television and binge watching. All of which made for some hilarious moments, and a grand Star Trek: The Experience shout out as well, and the wonder of this story didn’t end there.
Because character development has been a huge focus these past two seasons, and it was Mariner’s journey in this story that handled that. Because she took a little time to visit her old friend Quimp and well, while they were out and about in the city, she felt the need to indulge in some unhealthy behavior. The kind that was self-deprecating and angry, which prompted Quimp… to call her out. Because he genuinely has a soft spot for Mariner and he basically told her, she needed to sort out what was really eating at her and that stuck with her. Because she came to realize in this story, that she isn’t herself at the moment and uncomfortable with being trusted and guided in a healthy manner and she needs to understand why. Which made for some poignant moments, the kind that expressed that Mariner might have some deep-rooted trauma over the path of her career, and some imposter’s syndrome at the moment, the kind that will need to be addressed now that it’s been discovered. All of which made, for one magnificent episode. One that celebrated the best of Trek by offering up a storyline that spoke to the benefits of understanding and respect, while still offering up great fun through the usual comedy aspects of this show, and it was also amazing… to see Mariner begin to own up to some of the emotional stuff she’s been avoiding and let’s be honest, it was just amazing to be back on Ferenginar for the first time since Deep Space Nine, and get another follow up to how that show ended, since we came to learn that Rom and Leeta are thriving for certain and let’s be honest, it was just a treat to have Max Grodénchik and Chase Masterson reprise their roles, and much like their other counterparts that appeared last year, they simply did not miss a beat. But while there is plenty to celebrate here, we would be remiss to not point out that clearly, we are moving toward a crescendo when it comes to this mystery vessel… since it continues to wreak havoc and it will be interesting to see what we learn about it in the weeks to come, now that it is making waves in the heart of the Federation. Until next time. Watch ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 511 of ‘Magnum P.I.’ To revisit the Season Five Midseason Finale, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
Normally when a show returns from a hiatus of any kind, its fans are filled with joy. Because at last, there is more. More of those beloved characters, more of the stories that captivate and more of everything about the show that brings forth joy. But sometimes, those feelings are hard to find when a show comes back from hiatus, for the final time. Because then we know, this is it, the end of the line, a march toward a goodbye that we simply don’t want to take part in and well… all we feel… is melancholy. If anything, it is safe to say that fans of Magnum P.I. on NBC, felt that bittersweet sadness when they tuned into the show for its season five midseason premiere last night. Since earlier this year, it was announced that these upcoming ten episodes, would be the show’s final ten episodes. Which remains unfortunate news, especially since ‘Hit and Run’ hit the ground running and offered up one amazing plot. For this time around, Thomas and Juliet were hired by a hitman, to protect a young girl that he was contracted to kill. Which brought forth a stunning case that took our heroes all over the islands as they uncovered a disgustingly sinister plot. One that involved a down home church in the south, whose founding pastor was the young girl’s father, and out of a sense of duty, he took care of her, financially, from afar. But his passing meant that his son was taking over, and junior didn’t like the idea of paying off an individual that would be deemed as the illegitimate child of a pastor, so… he ordered up her end. But thanks to this duo, that never happened, and they saved the young girl and brought an entire crooked church empire down. Which was a wholesome and engaging plot that offered up a new kind of case for this duo to solve, and we will definitely miss that level of creativity and everything else this episode offered up. Such as the fascinating conundrum that Thomas and Juilet faced in this tale. Because there was in fact, a pregnancy scare for the couple in this story and that… left both of them wondering deeply… what would change for their profession if by chance they did have a baby. For they have chosen a risky line of work, one that puts physical harm upon both parties and well… this was a valid question and concern for them to address and something that most action shows and stories that feature a power couple in danger, don’t address in such detail. That made for some wonderful moments with these characters, the kind that ended in a manner we’ve been wanting to see for some time, and the wondrous character moments didn’t end there. Because we also caught up with T.C. in this tale and followed in his struggles that resulted from that ugly attack in the midseason finale. And well, he was doing his best to adjust… with mixed results. Because it was hard for him to accept that he might not be able to overcome his injuries. But he had love and support around him, and good news at the end of this tale, and this was just powerful to watch to say the least and had us rooting for him every step of the way. Plus, it was also nice to see Rick start to work on potentially finding love again, with someone that accepts him for him, and this wonderful mix of character moments and development, alongside one juicy plot, really did make for one amazing midseason premiere. One that celebrated some of the best aspects of this show and of course, left us a touch melancholy. But what is done, is done, and we did get five glorious seasons of this show and the big moments we utterly wanted, and that means… that once we let the melancholy fade, we can just savor the moments ahead. So that we can properly say goodbye to a show that brings us joy and managed to captivate generations of viewers and of course… letting that fade will also help us savor one great episode. Because that case really was the stuff of legend and showcased the best parts of our heroes and even the hitman that hired them. Plus, it was just great to see T.C. and Rick work to grow and move forward in life and well, sadness or no, it’s great to have these final episodes on the air and it will be interesting to see what other wonders await as we head toward the series finale of this magnificent show. Until next time. Watch ‘Magnum P.I.’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Premiere of ‘Quantum Leap’. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
Truly one of the most difficult tasks for any writer’s room to accomplish in storytelling, is keeping a serialized story fresh. Especially one that relies on certain elements to tell its story. Because that means, a formula and structure is in place that audiences love, so moving away from that is difficult since it denies them what is comfortable. But at the same time, following it to a tee, regardless of how good the storytelling can be, adds an air of predictability to the story. Creating a conundrum that has sunk some shows when they lean one way or the other. Which is why it is important to celebrate the ones, that figure out how to keep things fresh and wow the audience in the process and one such show that deserves such accolades is Quantum Leap on NBC. For last night’s season two premiere of the show, managed to celebrate everything we love about the series, while keeping things fresh. Which entailed finding a way to keep the usual interactions between Addison and Dr. Ben Song, intriguing and non-formulaic and well, ‘This Took Too Long!’ accomplished that feat… by way of a big surprise in the midst of serious trouble. For when we caught up with Ben here, he was in quite the pickle. For he leaped into a new body that was high above the ground in 1978. One surrounded by old military friends for the face he wore, and they were on a mission of redemption. For they were also misfits and castoffs from the United States Armed Services and were hoping to find redemption by escorting important cargo across Russian enemy lines and well… it wasn’t long before that mission brought about that aforementioned trouble. Because the Russians opened fire on the plane, and just like that… Ben was trying to sort out his bearings, his location, and his reason for arriving in this body, with no help. Because despite having large swaths of his memory back, and a desire to talk to Addison and the team… he was met with silence. Which was… a stunning twist to inject into this story one that we immediately were engaged with. Because for as long as this franchise has been around, either Al or Addison have found a way to keep in contact with Sam or Ben. Making this an epic twist that left us worried, scared, you name it. And it of course, forced Ben to work without that safety net around him. Which brought forth… a unique adventure for Ben. One where he had no context, no clues, not a thing to help him understand this jump or what he would need to do to escape and head home. But what he could do here, was science the hell out of every problem that came along and use his vast knowledge to help this rag tag group of misfits survive and stay ahead of any ensuing Russian forces. But more importantly, this plot let Ben grow. For without the advice of Addison, he simply had to rely on wits and his gut and that paid off in spades and made him a hero really. One that managed to help these rejected solders bring down a surface-to-air missile base and prove their worth to their country, and he also helped their commanding officer, a woman named Lieutenant Ellen Grier, showcase the reality that women can lead, in an era where women were staunchly seen as second class, and she trailblazed for certain, and by helping her and these heroes find their way forward… that was enough to get Ben to leap at last, and… that ending did indeed answer why Addison and the team were absent from this mission. But we… won’t be discussing that here. Because it was that epic, and that amazing and you need to experience it for yourself if you’re getting your first taste of this episode through this recap. But more importantly, this twist sets the stage for a refreshing season of storytelling. One that will now allow for this franchise to enter a bold new era. Where we now have this surprise, and its consequences to reconcile, while Ben deals with adventures that are clearly going to provide us with deep stories about the human condition and commentary about our world and that… well that just makes this writer and others excited to see where season two of this journey is going take us, in the weeks to come as season two of this magnificent series continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘Quantum Leap’

For the most part, popular media, in every medium, has worked hard to in essence, not discuss or explore the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic/Lockdown and understandably so. After all, that was… a scary time in all of our lives. For each and every person on the planet, had to face the very real possibility of losing their lives to a virus that claimed the healthiest of people, and our fears didn’t end there. Because we simply didn’t know what the virus was going to do, and the world was a hot mess during that time and its fate was up in the air, and all we could do… was sit back in our homes and wait and wonder what was next for us. But while there were indeed scary moments for us during that timeframe, there comes a point where we must begin to reflect upon the journey, we all went through. In part to help us to resolve the traumas that brush with death imparted upon us, but also… to just better understand everything we learned about ourselves and the world during the pandemic. Since it threw so much at us, some of which was good, some of which was bad. Some of which came as a direct result of the fear/trauma that was instilled within us during that trying time. But we must reflect, we must heal, and we must find value in a moment such as that, and well… that is why we are starting to see that edict in popular media be lifted. For stories about the pandemic are finally starting to head our way and it should come as no surprise that one of the boldest shows on television, took the time to dive into all of those elements in a bold manner. For that was the focus of the next episode of The Morning Show on Apple TV+, and that made ‘Love Island’ quite the powerful episode. Because it covered so much about that moment in time. A feat that it accomplished by transporting us back to March of 2020, on the eve of lockdowns and of a year that would change our lives and well… we quickly came to be reminded that there were a fair number of us that used this time as a season of renewal and exploration for what we wanted in life. Something that Cory and Bradley did by taking bold chances once the world shut down, via love, really. Since Cory got close to his real estate agent for a time, while Bradley cozied up to Laura out in Montana and well, they learned as the pandemic went along that neither Laura or that real estate agent was what they wanted or needed. They needed a deeper connection, and parted ways. All of which helped to remind us that that the pandemic did in fact, teach us a lot about what we need in our lives and what kind of relationship will fulfill us and the explorations of that time period didn’t end there.
For this episode served as a ‘greatest hits’ album of the pandemic, the kind that saw Mia grapple with the George Floyd nightmare that engulfed the country and its harsh reminders that racial equality was not and is not a thing in America in 2020 and 2023, and she also found herself facing some personal traumas once again during the pandemic, since Mitch Kessler’s interviews were released on UBA+ during this time. Plus, she also had a brush with the virus itself when her beloved just decided to go out and get blitzed. All of which just served to remind us of how trying this time was and the chaos that we had to endure from afar and of course… how we could not escape the virus. For it was indeed everywhere and it was indeed scary and unsettling whenever we had a brush with it, especially before the arrival of the vaccine and all of its wonder.
But while that made for a fascinating journey back through time, there was mention of how this story also explored some of the why behind the stranger acts that people took part during this period of time and some of it… was related to loss and the impact it has upon us. For Bradley’s mother, a staunch denier of the science as so many were during that time (and still are), succumbed to the virus. Which left Bradley in a dark place, and understandably so. For she had no closure regarding this since it happened so fast, and a traditional funeral wasn’t possible and that prompted her to do something quite out of character. For she covered 1/6 and was inside the capitol when the madness began, and she found her brother in there. And Hal committed crimes and was obviously in serious trouble, but Bradley bailed him out. She sent him off, deleted the footage and confided in Cory about the matter. Giving rise to the reality that grief makes us do awful things, since her reasoning for this was because Hal was all, she had left. However, that also explains why she was so concerned about the leak, and what it could mean and well, in the end, this was just a powerful, powerful episode. For it really did ponder deeply upon that dark period of time in our world and it also accomplished something quite unique. In that, any lessons it offered up were topical in nature, in fact, it was mostly reminders. Which meant that this episode wasn’t designed to give us a fix for our own concerns about that dark time in our lives, it tasked us instead. To ponder upon that time, to ponder upon the lessons and our own follies so we can make peace with it all and move on and that’s a bold move for a show about the world to take part in, but it works. Because that really is the right way to handle such matters, for a show cannot give us clarity on a supremely personal journey and now that we have blanks filled in for that era, and plenty to ponder upon, it is time to turn our attention to next week’s tale and how these moments will impact the rest of season three and the fate of UBA. Until next time. Watch ‘The Morning Show’

Sneak Peek #2
Written by John Edward Betancourt This piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist. Something quite special is happening in the world of entertainment right now. In that, we are finally seeing a push to offer proper representation and diversity on the silver and small screen. In part because, it is 2023 and such moves are long overdue. But this is also happening because audiences are outright demanding it. They’re making it clear that they want to see the world as it is in their daily entertainment, and they want a diverse set of individuals to tell stories that resonate in every form of the medium and one particular network that is leading the charge in such matters… is STARZ. For they consistently offer up shows that feature characters from all walks of life, and the folks that put these shows together, are equally as diverse and well… STARZ’s forward thinking on such matters is top of mind today, simply because they are once again bringing forth a show that reflects their commitment to diversity, specifically female-forward content.
