One particular truth about modern mankind, is that we are indeed the true masters of Planet Earth. After all, we have grown to eight billion strong and in doing so, we are now present in just about every corner of the planet. Wherein we’ve built incredible, sprawling cities, and we have amazing creations that can help us reach those points by land, sea, and air. Which is quite the amazing accomplishment to say the least, one that has sadly, come with some side effects and imparted a negative impact upon the very planet we have conquered. After all, the climate is changing thanks to the fossil fuels that helped to build this world, and we’ve made life difficult for the wildlife we share the world with. For we have pushed them out of certain parts of the world in order to move in and that’s disrupted their way of life, and all of these elements have put the animal kingdom in peril and forced it to adapt in wild ways, as evidenced by the next episode of Mammals on BBC America. For ‘The New Wild’ showcased how some animals, don’t necessarily disappear into new biomes or make a long trek to find a new home when we move in. They simply adapt to the world that surrounds them and make it their new home and well… that brought about some genuine surprises in this tale. Since it showcased how… there are so many animals that now just live alongside us and rely us on for sustenance and shelter. Take for instance, the sea lions that live in Chile. For so many of them have opted to stay on the beaches that we have claimed as our own and in doing so, have learned to live with humans. To the point where they now just… swing by the fish markets to get a little something to eat and do their best to just get by and they’re not the only ones who have made the city their home. After all, there are otters in Singapore, who are everyday citizens. Since they have their own special bands of territory they claim as their own and they simply move about, finding food and traveling amongst people as though we are no big deal. But with both species’ territory now claimed by humanity, what other choice do they have? And these were not the only surprising examples of how nature has adapted to our world. Since there are elephants that traverse cities in Africa at night to feed and keep their families thriving, and while that can be noisy and scary, the residents let it be because there is an understanding that these majestic creatures need to eat. Not to mention, some of these animals have discovered… ways to survive in places that we have devastated through conflict. Since there are wolves thriving in the minefields in the Golan Heights, because humanity stays away from this place, allowing for an eco-system to thrive. But of course, while it is fascinating to know that animals are getting by and adapting accordingly, not all are enjoying living alongside us. For populations have dwindled and so many are trying hard to make it through the day as we go about our business. But people are trying to make it all better. For there are conservation efforts to help populations thrive, and mankind is trying to protect species that are endangered but there is of course, so much more that we can do. Such as leaving behind a small carbon footprint and of course… do more to help nature live alongside us, and well, we might as well start now. For this episode showcased nature’s resiliency and its ability to adapt, and it really is only a matter of time before we live alongside wildlife that refuses to leave the home they’ve known. So why not… welcome them in and live alongside one another now. After all, it might create harmony at last with the natural world, a newfound appreciation for it, and help future generations understand the value of the beings we share this precious world with, so that harmony will persist for all time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Series Premiere of ‘Mammals’.
66 million years ago, the landscape of our world changed greatly. For this tropical paradise of a planet was ruled by massive beasts known as dinosaurs. Who truly towered over everything and were at the top of the food chain. But a rogue asteroid that impacted with what is now known as the Gulf of Mexico, brought about that change in question. For it spewed rock and dust into the atmosphere and throttled the sun and ended the reign of the dinosaurs. Which in turn allowed for every species that survived to fight for superiority of the planet and the ones that won out, were… mammals. For the planet is simply writhing with them, and that includes us, and well… the time has come to properly explore the species that stepped in after dinosaurs walked the Earth and learn what so many of them have become around the world, courtesy of a brand-new BBC America documentary, entitled Mammals. In fact, the series premiere of this incredible journey, wasted little time in diving into such explorations, by showcasing how some mammals, haven’t exactly stepped away from their roots. For so many of our ancestors operated in the dark while the T. Rex roared and so many still do, as evidenced by ‘Dark’. A story that explored how mammals operate under the cover of night in this century, and they do so… in a fascinating manner. For some, sleep as we do, such as the other apes in the world, and they face dangers we will never know. Because while we sleep in our beds, behind secured doors, they are in trees and vulnerable to predators at night. Giving rise to broken sleep and fights for survival, thanks to predators that can see them in the dark. While others, go about and live in the middle of the night, such as the fennec fox. Who uses its massive ears to hunt under the cover of darkness. For the still of the night allows for sound to travel well and allows for this tiny little fox to find what its needs to survive, and he’s not the only one up late. For the armadillo goes about its life under the cover of darkness, as do all the little rodents that make up the world beneath our feet, and while some mammals operate at night, they put on quite a show while doing so. After all, we do see bats as their evening begins, and that brings about real beauty and wonder as they emerge from caves and now man-made structures as well, to hunt. Since there are so many bats that live beneath the bridges of Austin, Texas, and wow the city and its tourists when they emerge to go about their business. Plus, if you’re careful, you might see wolves roaming about in Chicago past sundown. Since they have learned to live alongside us in the midst of the night, because the dark is indeed where so many mammals thrive. All of which made, for a fascinating opening chapter to this saga. Wherein we came to learn, that the human perspective on nighttime and how it operates, is vastly different than reality. For only our world stops when the sun goes down, and the rest of the world comes to life and moves about around us, above us and below us. For the most primal instincts of mammals haven’t left in the slightest. They’ve just adapted to a new world and well, the amazing sights we saw here, leaves us curious as to what other lessons await us, as we explore the world of mammals through this incredible and insightful new series. Until next time. Watch ‘Mammals’ (2024)
Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Down in the Valley’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. If there is one particular frustration that fans of documentaries and docu-series share in now in again, it would have to be dealing with a story in that vein… that does not deliver as promised. For every now and then, we will hear about a documentary that promises the world or a learning experience about a topic we are desperate to know more about it. Only for it to fall the wayside and give us a sub-par exploration or a story that doesn’t teach us a thing. And really, all we want is honesty and what were promised and that is why so many of us are celebrating Down in the Valley on STARZ. Simply because, this docu-series is giving us exactly what it promised, and more, really. For STARZ stated it would be a definitive look at life in the Deep South in 2024 and we are definitely getting that. Since host Nicco Annan has showcased how this old conversative stronghold isn’t as conservative as one might think. Because the rest of the world and its ideals are easing their way into the South and that’s giving rise to tolerance and learning when it comes to our sexual desires, and it’s also giving rise to powerful journeys of self-discovery for new members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Which is great because love and love, and everyone should be their authentic selves. And all of this has been presented to us alongside powerful moments of raw emotion and honesty that you don’t normally see in this kind of show, and it is not done yet with its incredible exploration of this part of the world. For last night’s episode of the show, dug deep into matters that we don’t talk about enough when it comes to the South. Specifically, its long-standing ties to the arts and how it is in many ways, Hollywood for musicians. For so many make their way to Memphis to be the next big country star the same way people flock to Los Angeles to see their name in lights. But this is something to recognize because the South is indeed the home of the Blues and Juke Joints, and truly… the rich impact that music has had upon the Delta and the world, makes it the epitome of something that Stephen King said in his book, On Writing. In that, ‘life isn’t a support system for art; it’s the other way around.’ Which was made evident by way of this week’s introductions. For we met several artists responsible for the soundtrack of P-Valley. Such as Jucee Froot, who sings the iconic theme song that shares the namesake of this series, and we came to learn how art helped her survive and thrive during hardships in life, and how it energized her to reach higher and above her pain. Something that so many speak of when it comes to what music does for their very soul. As for Talibah Sayifa and her partner, Bertram Williams Jr., well they are eager to embody that in their work. For they truly want people to FEEL something from music and understand its power and influence and that truly does speak to the majesty of music on the Delta, and it was fascinating to learn how it becomes that support system. But of course, since this is a truly comprehensive documentary through and through, one that explores every corner of what it speaks to, it should come as no surprise that Nicco took the time to transport us to Bentonia, Mississippi. Wherein we were able to see the majesty and wonder of the iconic and historic Blue Front Café and meet Jimmy ‘Duck Holmes. A blues musician that also runs the Blue Front Café and has been nominated for a Grammy Award for his work, and meeting him, through our televisions was not only a great honor… but offered a great understanding of how music and the blues are part of the very DNA of the Delta. And Jimmy spoke to how it means more to him to get that music out there and ignite something in the souls of people than worry about awards and accolades. All of which speaks to how music is so deeply tied to the South, making it no wonder that so many want to be part of it. Because then… you’re included in something special, something historical and generational in nature and well, all of this made… for one incredible chapter in this journey. For once again, we came to learn so much about the South. Plus, we were privy to the joy that music brings to its artists in this tale, and we came away with a grand understanding of what it means to folks that live in the South and that really is important to learn. Because it helps to remind us, of the majesty of the United States of America, and that it is home to so much more than what we usually toil over. It is outright host to real beauty and real creativity, the kind that inspires and energizes and that’s something worthwhile, and now that we’ve had this fine lesson, it’s onto the next stop in the valley. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 202 of ‘The Serpent Queen’. To revisit the Season Two Premiere, click here.
It likely safe to say, that every single world leader out there is eager to avoid a major crisis during their tenure, and understandably so. After all, a big crisis or major crises are scary and unnerving and it does fall to that leader to get their people out of the quagmire and that’s a lot to ask, and while yes… they are where the buck stops… they are still people. And they still feel pressure and worry and concern and have anxieties like the rest of us. They do, however, know how to put them aside, and that’s why we turn to them, and most rise to the occasion and that is what is truly interesting about crisis. In that, it tends to define what a leader is made of and well, both of those elements of leadership are top of mind of today, because they popped up in this week’s episode of The Serpent Queen on STARZ. Because Catherine de Medici, the Regent of France, was facing quite the crisis, thanks to the Guise family, in ‘Second Coming’. For all of France was abuzz about the blaze that happened at the church. One that put the royal family on worrisome notice since the King was almost caught in its flames and well, the immediate aftermath of this mess was a need for revenge. For the Bourbons wanted someone, (well… Charles…) to pay for the fire that was set. To give the protestant side of the country some measure of peace and of course… the catholic side simply saw that as a declaration of war. One that both sides began to march toward and therein was the crisis at hand. Because just like that, the delicate peace that Catherine put together was threatened by boisterous bravado and that meant… she had to respond and respond right. Thankfully, she was in indeed… the leader that France needed in that moment. Because she approached this with a cool head and understood that the only way to make peace here was to appease both sides and that prompted her, to get creative to get the Bourbons to stand down and to get the Guises to stand pat and know their role in this country. Which brought forth some surprises. Such as giving the Bourbons what they wanted in regard to trade negotiations. That way, Catherine could maintain control over that backwater deal, that she was of course, aware of, while making it seem as though the Bourbons could do as they please. The only price… was that they had to stand down from the march to war and they were happy to do so in place in cold, hard cash that would keep them well fed.
As for the Guises, well… they simply received the threat of punishment, and rightfully so. For they were truly the ones responsible for screwing with the peace by flexing an agenda, so Catherine quickly put them in their place and told them what the plan would be going forward. Lest they pay the piper. Which of course, they fell in line with because everyone knew that the Regent would not be toyed with, and as part of the plan to bring peace back to the streets and to further embarrass the Guise family, she planned to build a grandiose palace to honor the King and honor the people. Which brought an old frenemy into the fold, maybe, since Catherine did reach out to her cousin Diane about aiding in the building of this. Which she quasi-agreed to in principle, in exchange for more agency in a world where she was forgotten. Which Catherine agreed to… because great leadership flowed through her veins.
Because just like that, she quickly stepped in and quelled a major crisis and worked to further her agenda as Regent and that is… what we expect of great leaders, and her ability to do so, definitely brought peace to the land, and put some arrogant little goofballs into their place for the time being. But alas, while it was nice to see Catherine stand tall and lead and truly smooth out things at the top, a new crisis will soon challenge her further. Simply because we came to learn that all the souls that should have perished in that fire… did not. No instead, Edith figured out how help her flock escape and being under fire in such a manner, seemingly from the crown, prompted her to speak upon war. War against the crown in the name of the lord. Which will be an ugly crisis for certain, but one that clearly Catherine can handle. The only question is… if this is what makes the Serpent Queen strike hard enough to earn that moniker. But while we wait to see how that plays out, we can celebrate a magnificent episode filled with growth. For truly, Catherine was indeed a grand leader in this tale, and this is the first time we’ve seen such focus and such direction from her, and it was amazing to see play out, and that journey was anchored by another amazing performance from Samantha Morton. And this story also spoke once again, to what Catherine wanted to accomplish as Regent and what she wanted to France to be and that will make things interesting down the line, when she must make the harder choices in the name of her vision for the nation, since that’s another challenge great leaders run into. Specifically, how the brutality of some decisions are viewed differently by history, regardless of intention. Until next time. Watch ‘The Serpent Queen’

One of the hardest lessons that we will ever have to learn in this life, is the sheer fact that we won’t always come out on top when it comes to difficult goals in life. In fact, this is an even more difficult lesson to learn, when we have on several occasions, beat the odds and enjoyed grand success. Because then… it just seems as though the universe is slapping us in the face and outright messing with us. When in fact, it is trying to teach us a valuable lesson regarding the importance of failure and what it can do for us in a healthy manner, and never was this lesson more evident, than during the next episode of The Outlaws on Prime Video. For this next chapter in the saga of these flawed heroes… saw everyone deal with devastating failure and push back regarding their goal to be free of crime and to live a simple and relaxing life. For some, those issues were a bit more personal in nature, as was the case with dear Gabby. Because she struggled to get a little sperm from Greg since she needed a donor and her father, decided to manipulate her to get her to give up on her quest to get her inheritance. Because sadly, that’s what the universe does sometimes, it just roadblocks us and fights back and puts us in a tough place… and she wasn’t alone. Because John and Myrna, and Ben and Rani, found themselves under fire from the Dean’s police lackeys. To the point where threats were made, the kind that prompted John and Myrna to testify against DS Haines and make her look bad and shatter Diane’s hero complex of her in the process, and Ben and Rani… well they were simply running scared here. Because they were confronted with threats as well, and they had to help Greg nurse back to health for a bit. Because he came along in an effort to trap that nasty crooked cop… only to be put unconscious and well, that left everyone just besides themselves and unsure of what to do. Because they all failed to be slick here, to be heroes. They were just broken and angry and desperate. Which is… what the universe wants of us in that moment. To help us understand we are not invincible when we’ve had a lucky streak, and that failure is part of life. And that we need to endure it and learn from it. Because failure can teach us how to stand tall and push forward and think our way out of awful situations and well… eventually the group learned all that. For Gabby came to learn she needed to stand up to her dad and showcase how far she’s come, and the others… came to realize… they could not let the Dean bully them any further. They had to push back and teach him a lesson for all time, and in doing so, become stronger and ready for life beyond their community service and well, that prompted them to make an important phone call. One to New York City… to speak to their good friend Frank Sheldon. Because no one else would have a better idea on how to burn the Dean better than he. But while we wait to hear what that idea will be, we can celebrate one amazing episode. For this is the one, the one where the Outlaws finally learned the most important of lessons. Because they have indeed beat the odds and won, but now… they must look inward and face themselves and their mistakes and that’s why we tune in. To see these good people find growth and peace at last and truly, it will be interesting to see what lies ahead, now that the Outlaws are ready to strike back and take complete and utter control of their lives. Until next time. Watch ‘The Outlaws’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Series Premiere of ‘My Lady Jane’.
If there is one particular truth about history that we can all easily recognize, it would have to be that it is quite tragic in nature. Because it is wrought with ugly moments and darkness, and not to mention… those moments ended a lot of lives early, and history is also peppered in with the strangest deaths imaginable for people of note. Since some burned at the steak because they were smarter than others and/or didn’t believe in religion, while others were subjected to the angry whims of others before they could do anything wondrous. Such was the case with Lady Jane Grey. Who was Queen of England for a supremely brief period in time when King Edward named her as successor, before the dark part of history claimed her life. All of which leaves us wondering… what would have happened if there were brighter moments in history where the darkness didn’t win and where lives that were ended were given the chance to thrive. Well thankfully, sometimes we can ponder upon such matters in a healthy and creative way, wherein we can see that person shine, and stories tend to help with this, as evidenced by the delightful new Prime Video series, My Lady Jane. Which takes the time in ‘Who’ll Be Next in Line?’ to rewrite history to benefit dear Lady Jane Grey. All because, she is afforded the chance to live, because Edward lives. Granted, he is slightly ill when we meet him, but his survival as King of England allows for Lady Jane to survive and learn, what an unfortunate life women had to lead back in that era. For the death of her father, puts her uncle in the driver’s seat of her family’s fate. Which of course, prompts her to decide that living in her household is a bad idea, when she learns she is to be married off to Lord Guildford Dudley. Because… well that is in fact, gross, and not at all what she wants in life, and that prompts her and her maid Susannah to attempt an escape to evade such nightmares. A move that brings forth, a very unique journey for Jane. In part because, this divergence in timelines also gives rise to more imaginative moments within the story. Such as the fact that magical, human hybrids known as Ethians exist in this world, and that they are feared and hated in this universe, and that there are those who wish to seize power and use a new leader to control the fate of this group of beings. Which is why… there are parties harming the King, since dear Edward learns that he is slowly being poisoned, which leaves him in a vulnerable spot. One that he hopes to rectify. And while the King worries about how best to escape death, Jane grapples with her future. Simply because, the word ‘attempt’ was used to describe that escape, and it didn’t work for Jane. In fact, every effort she makes here to be free of a ball and chain fate fails miserably. Putting her in a tough spot, wherein she decides to feign illness rather than say ‘I do’ to a man that while she finds attractive, will be her husband without her desire for that to be the case. All of which brings forth… a grand and sweeping series premiere that quite frankly… is just plain fun. Because at no point does this story take itself too seriously, it instead plunges us into a magical world of fantasy and a joyous game of ‘what if?’. One that really does grab hold of you and leaves you wondering what will come next. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it features a little modern commentary on equality and the ugliness of misogyny, but that is not the focus. This is just an incredible story that offers two historical figures a chance a living the life they never got to enjoy. With a fantasy twist to add to the fun, and truly, it will be fascinating to see what other amazing and vibrant moments await us as this story continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘My Lady Jane’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Four Finale of ‘The Boys’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Often times, stories where the future is at stake because evil is making a grand push to ruin it, end in a happy manner. Where somehow, someway, the heroes find the right path forward to defeat evil and bring the world together. Which is especially true in superhero stories since they are indeed about heroes who are the best version of us, and it also gives the audience or reader faith in tomorrow and faith in humanity. As though we will indeed overcome and always triumph over evil. But that is also, escapist in nature since we know deep down… that good doesn’t always win. For reasons we don’t always fully understand since it is superior to evil in every sense of the word. Which is why the season four finale of The Boys on Prime Video is of note. Simply because this episode opted to buck the norms and provide us with a devastating tale… where evil won. Through means that made sense, and it accomplished such a feat via a mad dash to the finish line to stop Homelander through desperate means. One of which involved Butcher’s last-ditch effort to get Ryan to try and turn upon his father. Which wasn’t a terrible idea since Ryan was getting the Nth degree from dear old dad. But all that did, was deeply confound a young Supe even more, to the point where a life was lost and so was he. So, any hopes of stopping Homelander through blood were wasted in that moment, and of course… the Boys weren’t exactly winning either on their end. Since the Annie-Shifter wiped every bit of evidence needed to bring Vicky to accountability, and chaos was put into motion with the Vice President-Elect anyways since Homelander decided to just out her on live television. Which bought forth rioting in the streets and set the groundwork for failure. Granted there was A win for the team, since Annie got free, and the Shifter paid the piper. But alas, despite defeating the Shifter, the Boys were left in tatters since they still had no options for success and no hope of stopping the Supes from taking over. They were just floating about listless here while chaos reigned supreme, even at Vought HQ. Wherein Homelander decided it was time for a cleansing to keep the loyal in play, a move that forced Ashely to pump a little V into her veins.
All of which, allowed for the worst-case scenario to come to fruition. Because eventually, a vulnerable Vicky was ripped to shreds by a mentally shattered, and V mutated Butcher, and her death and the subsequent leaked footage of the President-Elect ordering her termination, led to his arrest and a near constitutional crisis. One that was a product of Sage’s forward thinking. Because she returned to reveal this was all part of her sloppy plan to help a loyal Speaker of the House, ascend to the presidency per the constitution. So that he would put Homelander in charge of the police state he dreamed of, and once that was done… ugliness ensued. Since the Boys were captured, minus Annie, and the nation was plunged into darkness.
Because evil won, and that made for a powerful and sobering finale. One that in between those big and tense and uncomfortable moments, explored how evil wins and how that is relevant to the show’s commentary this year regarding Trumpism and the MAGA movement and its attempts to be Homelander, and what it is hoping will happen so it can win. As it turns out, evil wins because good is rarely unified and rarely understanding. Sure, collectively good people mean well, but there are different ideas present on how to win and truly, an eye for an eye is an edict for both sides and evil knows this and is eager to divide us and conquer us and bring us down to its level. But if we showed unity and grace, and poise and determination… maybe things would go different. Which means that is perhaps the message that Showrunner Eric Kripke is eager to leave us with. To ignore the fear, the noise, and the constant pundit gibberish and unify. Unify and stand up and say enough to ol’ Cheeto von Tweeto and his brand of crazy and put an end to this on Election Day, so we don’t have to think about what horrors his minions are salivating over if they win. Which makes this, a poignant and cautionary finale, one that also sets up a powerhouse showdown. Because now the stage is set for a battle for the ages, as what’s left of the Boys try to stand tall and save America from a true menace and a true madman, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out when this bold series returns for its fifth and final season. Until next time. Watch ‘The Boys’
