Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
Marvel Cinematic Universe stories, follow a pretty standard formula for their finales. Wherein the hero and the heavy… square off in a tour de force final battle. One that features lessons abound for both sides, collateral damage, and the all-important happy ending. Wherein the hero is triumphant, and the world is put back together in the best manner possible. All because that makes for a satisfying ending and good triumphing over evil is what we’ve come to expect from superhero stories. If anything, that standard ending is top of mind today largely because… the finale of Secret Invasion on Disney+, opted to basically buck that formula and take the finale of this story in a new direction. One that was quite surprising to say the least. For ‘Home’ is a story… that featured a vastly different kind of final showdown between Gravik and Nick Fury. For that was what we expected to take place in the Skrull Sanctuary, and we thought, based on the track record of these stories… that Nick would find a way to diffuse the situation and save the day. But instead, Nick was deeply ill and willing to just give Gravik what he wanted. Which more or less made it seem as though evil was going to win. Since Nick was obviously in no shape to stand up to a monster made of the greatest heroes in all the land. But that’s where this finale started taking us in a vastly different direction. For it turned out, that it wasn’t Fury in front of Gravik. It was G’iah. Who said what Fury needed to express to a broken alien, before taking him on head-to-head. For she also garnered those incredible powers and was able to go, blow for blow, with Gravik, before finally bringing his madness to an end, saving endless lives, and the uniqueness of this finale didn’t end with that fascinating final fight. After all, we were all curious as to what Fury was up to since he clearly wasn’t in Russia, and well… his job in this story… was to save the President of the United States… from a lie. For Ritson was rattled and still healing from what happened shortly after he arrived in Russia, and of course… the Rhodey-Skrull was eager to push him to start the march to war. To give the Skrulls the fight they wanted… no… needed to take over the planet for themselves and Skrodey was pushing hard to have POTUS ignore logic and ignore evidence and just give into fear. Thankfully… President Ritson never had the opportunity to really think too deeply on launching a nuke. Because Fury was in the hospital and dropping Secret Service agents left and right. So that he could get to this imposter and the president and finally show the most powerful man in the world, that he was being duped by an alien. Which should have brought forth the happy ending in question. Since Fury did accomplish his mission and saved the day. But this was merely the showdown that led to a dark and unsettling ending. Wherein the President of the United States didn’t ask for calm and unity following the end of this unfortunate conflict. Instead, he called for war against the Skrulls, and that inspired hate and spread more fear. Which led to more violence and more bloodshed of both human and Skrull alike. Which was an ending that took all of us by surprise. Since we expected unity and wonder. Instead, we were treated to an us versus them world that oddly reflects the fire of our own world at the moment, and well… the chaos that was unleashed was more than Fury could handle. For there was no putting the genie back in the bottle, and this hero was helpless to do anything… but walk away. With his love no less, to let the fight take its course, and to return to his new work and well… that made for quite the shocking ending. Because… that truly broke with formula and was a little too human and real in nature. For it spoke to a world on the brink, one that couldn’t be saved by a hero and that’s the stuff we see in real life, not in comic book themed stories. And that is likely an ending that will not sit well with every member of the audience, who are used to escapism over commentary this heavy in these stories. But is the ending we received, and it fits since Fury is indeed a busted man that is slowly making his way back into the light. The only question is what will redeem him long term. But in the here and the now, we can celebrate one bold finale. One that truly took the MCU in a vastly darker direction we are used to, making this perhaps… a flawless comic book adaptation, and truly it will be interesting to see if this is the beginning of a new era for the MCU. Where flaws and failures… rule the day. Until next time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Five of ‘Cannes Confidential’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. One particular word that has come up often in our discussions of the wondrous Acorn TV series, Cannes Confidential, is versatility. Simply because this series has shown over the course of its first season… that it can tell any kind of story it wants, whenever it wants. And it can even genre-bend so to speak and bring elements together that we never expected it to. Which has led to tributes to Moonlighting by way of the romantic elements present here, alongside 007 tributes and stories that explore the glamour and glitz of the undercover police world. If anything, this particular aspect of the show is top of mind today, simply because it was on display once more… in the most surprising and unique way imaginable. For ‘Southern Gothic’ is a story that opted to… plunge Camille and Lea, and Harry, into a murder investigation that offered up a great deal of horror elements. Granted, at first, it didn’t seem as though that was going to be the case. Since the passing of a wealthy heir, seemed to be nothing more than a tragedy. But the discovery that he was murdered, after a séance no less… plunged this story into the world of the mystical and the spiritual and offered up a story that matched the title of this episode. Since this trio had to explore the haunted world of this broken family and the deeper, they dug into their affairs, the creepier the story became, the creepier the family became, and the more horror elements came into play. Since the family thought… they were riding a curse, and there was little to dispute that. After all, the medium responsible for the séance, stuck to her story about there being spirits and ghosts in the family household and that they were awakened by the ritual, and strange stories about the family and odd occurrences along the way… only seemed to reinforce that this was something different at play. Something sinister and from beyond. But Camille didn’t believe in such matters, and that pushed her to really look at evidence and facts over anything else, and that of course… brought a killer to justice and proved that the family had different problems on their hands. Ones that were most NOT certainly spiritual in nature. But what matters more here, is that the show genuinely did a fine job of poking about the horror genre and the wonder of gothic themed storytelling. Which really did speak to how this series likes to let loose and just explore whatever sounds like fun or might make for a unique story and it definitely stuck the landing here, and it also made a point… to keep the bigger threads hanging over this season going. Since the love triangle between this trio heated up like never before. Since Harry grew closer and closer to Camille here, and was oft her protector, but Lea also took the time to make her move and steal a passionate kiss with her boss at the end of this tale. Plus… Harry and Camille did figure out how to best Boire briefly. By discovering how he was staying one step ahead through listening devices, and by laying out a trap for him. One that he was able to sniff out and that sadly, led to injury for Lea, since she joined in on the game, and quite the surprise for Harry and Camille. Since Borie felt the only way to regain leverage over the situation was to drag Harry into the mess, by kidnapping his daughter. Revealing his secret to Camille and putting him in the darkest place he’s been to date. Courtesy of a story that featured flawless writing and flawless acting. Because everything here worked, and everything was engaging and delightful and well, it truly set the stage for a powerful season finale. One that should at last see Camille and Harry go on the offensive to save their family members from awful fates, and hopefully bring an end to Boire’s little games and bring him to justice at last. Or it could also surprise us and do none of those things, since this series has no qualms with shaking things up to wow us, as evidenced here. But one thing is guaranteed for certain. In that, whichever way this series goes, we’re going to love it… because this really is the most refreshing and dynamic crime story around and it will be fascinating to see what path awaits us in the season finale. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt

It is definitely safe to say, that the Twee Indie Film has managed to stay true to its roots throughout the course of its existence. Which is… no easy task. Because most genres of film tend to evolve and transform into something new and unique as the years roll along. But the world of Twee remains quirky and uplifting and always looking toward discovery and perhaps it is the genre’s innocence that allows for it to maintain such positivity. Since those are elements that cannot be sullied or ruined by the darker aspects of our world, no matter how hard one might try and for proof… well then look no further than the next episode of The Afterparty on Apple TV+. For the next chapter in the mystery of what happened to Edgar, tried to see if by chance the wonder of the Twee Indie Film could indeed be sullied by plunging such elements into the midst of a murder mystery. All by having Danner and Aniq, and to a lesser extent, Zoë, sit down with their prime suspect Hannah. Since she of course… had the missing ‘G’ key found on Edgar and was near the very plant that likely caused his death. And she of course… had motive and well… that meant the time had come for her to tell her tale and she of course did so in the Twee style. Complete with those perfect title cards and Avant Garde moments of narration and guidance you find within the genre, and well… her journey is what informed us that this is a genre that is infallible. Simply because Hannah too went on a journey of discovery in life. One that brought her acceptance through Edgar, since she was adopted and he made every effort to keep her safe and make her part of the family and that allowed for Hannah… to enjoy the wonder of life, and of the world, and live with a freedom that few of us have ever known. Not to mention, she also found the purest of love in this life. Specifically… Grace. For Edgar was always out and about doing business things like a good businessman, and that meant she and Grace spent a lot of time together and discovered the spark and indulged in its wonder. Giving Hannah a joy she never knew and that of course… prompted her to go to great lengths to end the marriage when Hannah learned that Grace was going to stay with Edgar, regardless of what they felt. But alas, that plan changed when the big day came, when she realized that her brother actually did care for Grace deeply and was motivated to change and become more because of the spark they shared. And rather than rob her brother of what she felt in her heart, she repaid him in kind by leaving the marriage be and carrying on with the pain that only a forbidden love can create. And she also gave him the G as a parting gift, and well… sadly… we know how Edgar’s story ended. But the truth about Hannah’s journey is what mattered here, since it absolved her of murder and its motivations, and it pointed these intrepid gumshoes toward a new suspect for the case. Since Sebastian was hovering about and making some odd moves in this tale to keep the business going, and exhibited some odd behavior around Hannah that left everyone wondering if he did it, and well, it is possible. For he was apparently about to be fired from the company, there are few things in this world that push a person to kill, quite like money. But that is of course… a matter and a suspect to be explored next week, and in the here and the now, we can celebrate another inventive tale. For this really did showcase how the innocent nature of the Twee Indie Film, and the purity of the journey its characters go on… doesn’t allow for the genre to ever be corrupted. Mainly because its core themes revolve around appreciating the best parts of the world, we take for granted, or reminding us that we should always approach the bad with maturity and objectivity, so we don’t succumb to darkness. And the show deserves a round of applause for perfectly integrating those messages into a story about the worst act imaginable, and for doing so in delightfully comical ways and well, that once again leaves us eager to see what kind of unique genre study awaits us as the case continues along. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Six of ‘Hijack’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
The old saying, desperate times call for desperate measures, is one that still has merit in this day and age, simply because time and time again… we’ve come to learn that when the chips are down and our backs are against the wall, the only way to improve our situation is to resort to drastic measures. And more often than not, they do wonders for us. For they might get us the extra money we need for rent that month or get us moving in the right direction when we feel stuck. Or perhaps save our lives when we are presented with a dangerous situation. If anything, desperate measures are top of mind today, because every aspect about them, just so happened to play a big part in the next episode of Hijack on Apple TV+. For ‘Comply Slowly’ featured some hard escalation. For on the ground, the British government decided to use the mobsters that were the masterminds behind this whole mess… as guinea pigs of sorts. By releasing them from their cells, and offering them their freedom, in the hopes that they would either call off the hijack or lead the authorities to all kinds of new cases. Since their freedom could net intelligence and further arrests and well, this basically turned out to be an outright terrible idea. Because one of the demands these ‘upstanding gentlemen’ made, was to have no one follow them, and if that was the case, there would be consequences. Well of course, they had to be followed, and those trailing these villains were spotted and that did indeed bring forth… some consequences born of desperate measures. Because Stuart received a text in the air, one that demanded, that someone die aboard the plane and photo evidence be sent over to properly make it clear to those in charge… to acquiesce to those demands or more would pay the ultimate price. Which brought forth another hostage to stand before Stuart’s gun, until Sam intervened. For he pointed out that blood had already been shed and to use that victim to keep the big boss happy. Which Stuart did, and that of course… was everything needed to de-escalate the situation on the ground, if only for a little while. Because that order from down below, inspired some more desperate measures in the air. Because Sam came to realize that this close call with the hijackers was only the beginning of their troubles.
For if they were pushed or asked again by their bosses to kill, they were clearly ready to, and that meant… the passengers had to fight back whether they liked it or not if they wanted to survive. Which prompted Sam to work with his new friends in First Class to get a message to the rest of the plane. One that specified that the time had come to rise up and re-take KA29 and land it ASAP, before more perished at the whims of a monster, and that led to some desperate moments from the passengers. Wherein we saw them organize and eventually rise up against the hijackers in a tense moment that left us believing through and through that this was it, that they were about to finally put an end to this nightmare and be free at last. All because of a desperate choice to inspire quick action.
But alas… that move, and the fact that the authorities did their best to try and bring those bosses back to prison, pushed the bad folks in this story… into desperation mode. Because they wanted their agenda to be executed, and since the brass escaped arrest… they pulled off quite the surprise. In that, they had a desperation mode plan in place, one that made sure, that in the event the hijackers faltered or if anyone fought back… the plan could continue, and the leverage evil had over good would be maintained and well… that plan went into motion. One where a sleeper agent of sorts was awakened and made her way to the cockpit to take control the plane and seal that all-important room, and she made sure to kill the pilot along the way. Which made the push to retake the plane moot and left the fate of everyone on KA29 in a terrifying place. Because we simply don’t know if this person knows how to fly, or if they have darker directives in mind. But what we do know, is that desperation ruled the day in this episode and that the situation is simply falling to pieces. Simply because, the tight hold these mobsters have over everyone is slipping fast and survival instincts are kicking in, and that reality made for one stunningly intense episode. One that really kept us on the edge of our seats. For we didn’t know what was going to happen, and in many ways, we still don’t. Because that twist really was something else and well, just like that… the finale of this incredible journey awaits. One that is undoubtedly going to wow us and get our hearts racing, as we watch this long and winding, and stunningly suspenseful adventure come to an undoubtedly powerful end. Until next time. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
The phrase ‘boys will be boys’ is one that has aged poorly over the past decade or so, with good reason. Because for starters, it offers nothing more than a pass regarding the toxic behavior that young men take part in, further enabling them and further pushing them to just ‘be a man’ and do ugly things without reproach or without consequence. But it also has aged poorly, because we’ve come to understand, that the phrase is wrong. For boys will only be boys when they are taught that such behaviors are okay and nudged toward them via an unhealthy reinforcement method. For toxic behavior isn’t something that just magically appears overnight, it takes time and nurturing, like any other behavior in this life. But that does beg an important question… specifically… what does that process look like? Which is a question we ask to not only understand how a normal young man transforms into a jerk… but to also figure out how to stop this long-term. For toxic masculinity is a real problem that needs to be addressed in our world and the root cause is always the best place to start and well, all of this is top of mind today, because that question and the process were explored in the next episode of Cruel Summer on Freeform. For ‘The Miseducation of Luke Chambers’ took the time to explore the life and times of the victim in this case, and really come to understand what motivated him to be so toxic and to cross so many lines, and well… a lot of it related to two key elements. Luke’s idiot father and the world that he was currently surrounded by. For both of those elements, nurtured negativity and pushed him toward the edge. For instance, we came to learn in this story, that Luke had plans for the future. For he saw what his father had become, as a successful businessman, and how he was grooming his brother to be something similar, and he wanted no part of that. Instead, he wanted to join the Coast Guard. Do something noble and feel better about his day. Perhaps contribute the world by saving lives. But of course, dear old dad put him down for such thoughts, and demanded that he toughen up. Be a man and understand that life wasn’t about dreams nor was it always fair. It was about growing up and settling in. Which hurt Luke deeply and angered him, and the foundation for his behavior received reinforcements from his brother and his friends. Who offered up the usual dude bro ideas and concepts around him and pushed him to be something of a playboy, but that wasn’t his style. So, he tried to exist in two worlds… until they pushed him to the edge. Since his father and his friends were relentless and expected him to really fit the mold of the times and fit the mold of manhood. Which was to be stoic and sexual, and follow orders out of respect, and of course, to be the alpha and impress. Which was enough to force him to take part in the acts necessary to fit in, to be the man everyone wanted him to be. All of which explained that toxic masculinity and informed us that the birth of search behavior comes from outdated societal pressures, and generational trauma and generational expectations. For we have defined men to be toxic, and free from consequence for doing so, and no man can feel accepted in their youth unless they take part. Which means, some fundamental changes would have to come into play to end it, and those will take some time. But make no mistake about it… while we can see Luke as victim of society here, he did… make an active choice to do these things. Which is also part of the process, like anything else in life, and had he chosen to continue to fight, who knows how this story would have ended. But he did not, and he suffered a gunshot wound to the ear and the devastation of everything he held dear in his young life because of a commitment to the norms. And well, what’s fascinating, is that his toxic behavior also engendered further toxic behavior and helped to build that perfect storm that led to his end, and all of this made for a powerful episode. One that addressed a topic that is in fact, taboo in nature but necessary to explore at this time. Because of the problems this kind of behavior brings forth, and it was nice to see a show, put this on this display and offer warning signs and say enough. Since that sometimes is what we need to light a spark. But now that we know how Luke helped contribute to the madness and what drove him to be such a little punk to people that cared about him, the time has come to turn our attention to the conclusion of this case. For all that remains is the season finale, and it will be fascinating to learn, who killed Luke, and why… and what will become of those who indulged in darkness during that fateful and cruel summer. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. It is definitely safe to say, that season one of the STARZ series, Power Book IV: Force, served as nothing less than a masterclass on how to launch a spin-off. Because everything about that first season was simply flawless, and at no point did it feel like the first year of a new chapter in the Power Universe, it felt like another chapter that had been on for years. Truly, there are few travel/road-trip shows that rival the majesty and honesty of Ride with Norman Reedus on AMC. For Norman’s desire to really immerse himself within the culture of a nation of the world, with a cool friend no less… really provides viewers with a road-trip that is as authentic as it gets. One that reflects what we look for and work to experience when we hit the road, and of course… the show is a lot of fun to watch as well. Since it is filled to the brim with delightful moments that put a smile on our faces, and well, it’s safe to say we’ve been missing more of Norman’s adventures around the globe. Since it has been a couple of years since we’ve enjoyed a new season of this dynamic show. But it makes sense as to why. After all, season five was filmed before Covid and released during it as well, and it simply was not safe for Norman, any guest he had in mind or the awesome crew that travels with him, to hit the road until the virus and its spread was under control. But now that the world is returning to normal, and the pandemic is a memory… Norman is back on the road and ready to share new adventures with us… in just a matter of weeks. For earlier today, AMC announced that September 10 will bring forth the season six premiere of the show, after the series premiere of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon no less, and to properly celebrate the return of this acclaimed series, AMC was kind enough to release a trailer to prepare us for our return to the road, with one of our favorite actors. So, without further ado… here is that trailer and all of the details regarding season six of Ride with Norman Reedus, courtesy of AMC. ‘AMC Networks announced today that the sixth season of Ride with Norman Reedus will debut Sunday, September 10th at 10:00 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+ directly following the series premiere of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon which also stars Reedus. Join Walking Dead star and motorcycle enthusiast Norman Reedus on epic road trips around the world. Each episode features Reedus and a riding companion- a fellow actor, musician, or friend, exploring local culture and seeking adventure on the road. Guests this season include Keanu Reeves, Adri Law, Josh Holloway and Johnny Knoxville. Ride with Norman Reedus is produced by Left/Right (This American Life, The Circus, James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction) with Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver and Anneka Jones serving as Executive Producers along with Reedus.’ |
