Written by ScottyIt seems like for the most part, this past winter was pretty tame, since there were several days with temperatures averaging over thirty percent higher than last year. That may not seem like a lot, but when you are talking about a fifteen degree shift, well, you have got something. It is difficult to predict the weather and living in Colorado and watching the weather people get it wrong most of the time, it is difficult to imagine what might happen if they got it right all of the time. With the ever changing winds blowing across the nation, it is very exciting to see what weather strangeness we get next. Young Tim Ratchet is visiting his father the week before Christmas and is having the time of his life, well sort of. When his dad is not looking, Tim is trying to amuse himself, and has caught the eye of one of the town’s beauties, Marley Crooge. Although Tim does not see a problem with this relationship, her father, Ben Crooge is the richest man in town and is about to open a mall on main street, and could make life difficult for Tim. Tim’s father Charlie also works for Mr. Crooge and although he does not share his employer’s beliefs, there is no way to open his mouth and express his opinion without losing his job. But it is Christmas time and two head into town to take part in the party that will be taking place after a big announcement. At the university, Alex Novak has been tracking a meteor heading towards earth and is concerned that it may actually hit. Being Christmas Eve, her professor has told her to leave and pick it up next week, but Alex is determined to see it though and prove that her hunch is correct. In town, Tim and Marley escape the crowd for a couple minutes to express their love for each other and watch the meteor enter the atmosphere and break into two pieces, one of which finds its way to Main Street. Hearing the blast as it makes impact, this meteor has something special within it which no person has seen before, the power of extreme cold and with every breath it takes, it exhales frigid cold causing flash freezes. After making sure that all of the survivors are taken care of, Charlie comes up with a plan to get everyone to safety by sending them to the adjoining town. Not fully understanding the severity of the situation, he watches as the town is engulfed into an ice age and has to find a way to stop it, or at least keep the townspeople safe. Witnessing first hand with Alex the powers of the meteor, the two are in a race against weather to make it back to the town safely only to find that fire can keep the extreme cold at bay. Alex knows that there will be a way to stop the freeze from expanding, and needs to find a heat source strong enough to fight the meteor's chilling agenda. With a plan in place to blow up the meteor, a small group takes to the hills to get dynamite, but little do they know that Tim and Marley are trying to find their way to safe ground since the meteor has disabled their vehicles. There is nothing like a good disaster movie that makes you feel great for staying inside. What do I like most about this movie? I love the meteor, it grows, it has targets and it shoots up ice crystals from underground with a purpose. There is nothing better than a non-living villain to keep a small group of townspeople in check and at every turn, it seems to be able to know what they are up to. But that is not the entire story, it is about love and respect and although you do not see a ton of that when the movie starts, it comes to play as the ice takes over the town. Just a fun movie with some good effects that will leave you shaking your head when you see the stupidity of some people. Happy Viewing.
