Written by ScottyThe thought of artificial intelligence becoming reality is really starting to frighten me. I know that all signs point to it as helping to make the world a better place, but it is still a machine and does not know how to handle emotions. And what if it takes over all of our systems and locks the humans out of big decisions that need to be made to defend ourselves? I usually look at the things that could happen in the worst case scenarios and don’t think too much about the positives that can come from these sort of changes, it might just be me trying to make sure that everyone knows what they are getting into. Technology reporter Joy Andrews has been called in to do a story on the work that David Kressen has been doing. Being allocated a week for the story, Joy thinks that it will only take a day, but she quickly finds out that there have been many innovations made that will take a little more time to cover. When talking to David and getting the tour, she sees new artificial skin that feels real to the touch, along with some of the most ground breaking skeletal structures that she has ever seen. Being a robotics drop out, Joy knows most everything that she needs to cover for this story, but she has yet to meet Adam. After talking to Adam for a couple minutes, Joy thinks that she is being put on and that there is a joke being played on her, but when David comes clean that Adam is his invention, well, Joy thinks that she may actually need the whole week to cover the story. As the week moves on, Joy is given inside access to the facility where David has been working on all of his projects and finds out that there is much more happening behind the scenes. Adam seems very kind and is not used to having anyone other than his creator at his side and is trying to make a new friend with the pretty woman. Asking Joy about her past, Adam gets fired up when he is not able to get a complete answer for why she gave up on her robotic past. Apologizing, Adam is starting to feel things for this reporter that he cannot explain. During their nightly talk, Adam gives David all of the information that he has been able to pick up from asking Joy the straight questions and wants to make sure that he is doing okay with everything. David approves of Adam branching out and trying to make a friend, but is starting to use the information for his own means. While recreating Joy’s failed thesis, David starts to form a bond with the reporter and would like to take it further. As the flirting between David and Joy becomes more apparent, Adam is forced to sit back and watch. Not liking what is happening in front of his eyes, Adam starts to lash out and his programing seems to be changing drastically. As he continues to learn about the real world, Adam is ready to take the next step as well, but when David has captured the heart of Joy, all bets are off. I like the movies that have a minimal cast to make sure you get to follow the story that is being told on the screen. Without any explosions, this is the kind of movie that lets you think about what is happening and focus on the clues that are being given to you. I liked all three characters in this movie, they all brought something different to the story and you can tell they gave it a little something extra when it counted. The thoughts of what artificial intelligence could bring to the world makes me shiver, and now with a robot that nobody can detect, well, that is just downright scary to me. Happy Viewing.
