Nerds That Geek Movie Review: 'The Machine'

With so many things being done to try to make the world a better place to live, it is hard to keep track of everything that is happening. With technology continuing to skyrocket with new enhancements every week, what you buy is outdated the second you buy whatever is the latest and greatest. If this is happening so quickly on the consumer front, it is hard to imagine what is happening in the private sector that works on the bigger projects that help to protect the country. 

Vincent is working for the Ministry of Defense on a project that is years in the making, artificial intelligence. Although he has been able to complete his own computer, he is still in need of more breakthroughs that he will not be able to come up with on his own. Holding financial backing sessions with the best in the field, Vincent is able to locate a young woman that may be able to take his research to the next level.

Ava jokes that her computer is more human than most people, but when she is extended a job offer to work for the Ministry of Defense, she knows that it is true. Finding out the true motives behind Vincent’s research, Ava is willing to work for the agency, even though she fears that her improvements will be weaponized at some point. As she starts searching through all of the records in the secret base, she starts to ask herself if she is doing the right thing, but is not given much time to reflect as an ambush is set up to kill her.

Vincent is more than upset about the loss of his new partner, but continues his research to try to help his daughter who is suffering from a mental disease and does not have much more time. Dumping the program that he and Ava have finished into an android shell, Vincent and the Ministry are very surprised with the results. As Ava has come back to life in a way, Vincent works with her on a daily basis to teach the machine what it is to be alive. But the Ministry has a different plan for the newly created android and that is for it to become a weapon. 

This movie kind of left me in shock after watching it. As you get to see an android come to life right in front of you and watch it get trained in the range of human emotions. It is scary for me to think that this could actually be happening with all of the enhancements we have in the computer world, who knows if the cybernetic world is moving as fast. With Vincent trying to find a way to save the essence of his daughter, he finds out it could be much more complicated than he could ever expect since the Ministry is looking to do something much more sinister with the program that he created. Having to make up his own mind on what is right, he also has to find  a way to convince his new creation that his way of thinking is correct as well. Happy Viewing.
