Girls of Geek Movie Review: Super

Trying to stand out from the crowd is hard enough these days. Having to join in on the different fads to make sure that you fit in, it is next to impossible to stand alone, unless you are willing to be different.  If you are one of those people that can stand alone and don’t mind being called an outcast, it is just another day, but very few people are able to do this since we all have need to fit in, one way or another.

Frank Darbo is just an everyday man with nothing special about him. Being an outcast and being beat up consistently in his younger days, Frank needs to find a reason to wake up every day.  He has found that he has two great moments in his life and when he wakes up every morning, he wants to be reminded of them.  Getting married to his beautiful wife Sarah is one, and telling a police officer where a robber ran off to was the other.  Making a drawing of each of these events and putting them up on the wall will keep Frank in his positive mindset and keep him smiling throughout the day.

Since Frank has not done anything extraordinary he can see that some of the aspects of his marriage are failing however.  When he notices that his wife is starting to fall back into her old drug abusive ways and does not want to even cuddle anymore, he fears that he is losing her.  Then one day it happens, Sarah up and leaves their life without even a note and Frank has to draw upon everything he knows to find her and get her back.  Running into one of Sarah’s so called friends, Frank finds out that she has left him for another man and needs to do something about it.

Being touched by God and talking with his new hero, The Holy Avenger, Frank decides to suit up and do something extraordinary with his life.  Turning into The Crimson Bolt, Frank finds out that fighting crime is what he was meant to do with his life.  Needing to find better ways to battle his new foes, Frank has to turn to his local comic book shop and start reading about super heroes without special abilities and what they use to compensate it with.  Young Libby gives him his pick of several heroes and finds that the broken man is much more than he seems and wants to help him on his new adventures.

Super follows the life of Frank Darbo who has just lost his wife to the influence of drugs.  Believing that she is being held against her will, Frank takes to the streets and tries to bring her back home, but finding that his is out manned and out gunned, he needs to become someone else.  Becoming The Crimson Bolt, Frank is able to live out his dreams of beating up the scum of the city, and with no one to stop him, he will be able to accomplish anything he wants.  Teaming up with his kid sidekick, Boltie, Frank finds out that there is much more to being a super hero than just putting on the uniform, it is more about protecting the innocent from the evil that lives inside of them.

Looking for a superhero movie to make you laugh, Super is the way to go.  With everything that Frank has to go through to become one of the most feared people in the city, it is amazing that he survives.  Then with the addition of a foul mouthed sidekick, you do not get a break in the laughs until the story starts to get serious.  It is great to watch as a character is able to transform right before your eyes and become someone much larger than they should be.  With plenty of off color comedy and plenty of action, it is hard to find a reason not to give this movie a try, if for nothing else, once you see who all has cameos in it, you will be sold.  Happy Viewing.
