Written by John Edward BetancourtI always enjoy when a unique and quirky film finds its way to my television or laptop screen, simply because of the fact that as the film begins to unfold you realize you are in for a real treat. Something new and exciting is about to unfold before your very eyes and it always makes for a magical viewing experience. I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a particularly unique film when I was treated to a motion picture about filmmaking, or in this case, the worst case scenario when it comes to filmmaking, Le Fear II: Le Sequel. Now this motion picture takes us deep behind the scenes of filmmaking with Writer/Director Carlos who is looking to finance a sequel to his disaster of a motion picture Le Fear. The good news is, he manages to find an investor and get funding for his sequel. The bad news is...he not only has to put up 500k of his own money to get it rolling but he is about to be saddled with a cast and crew that may send him into madness with their incompetence. This is hands down, a pretty hilarious film courtesy of the unique situations that Carlos is thrust into, especially when it comes to his completely and utterly incompetent producer, Efi. At every turn Efi manages to fail to bring any request that Carlos and his crew bestow upon him in incredibly funny fashion. The film set that Efi is supposed to have constructed for the movie turns out to be nothing more than a caravan. The special effects that are supposed to wow and terrify are nothing more than inflatable monsters that one could purchase at the dollar store. The complete incompetence of Efi, courtesy of the fact that he is clearly a scam artist and has zero experience in filmmaking, combined with the increasingly weirder people that he hires to star in the film makes for some laugh out loud moments at how outrageous those decisions turn out to be. To top it off, Writer/Director Jason Croot makes a point to make the film accessible to people not interested in the minutiae of filmmaking by not focusing on anything technical, he keeps his attention squarely focused on the characters and that pays off nicely. Either way, I was definitely entertained watching this one, and I do hope as it begins to reach a wider release and audience that perhaps we see a home video edition that includes some commentary and behind the scenes of a movie about going behind the scenes, simply to get a better understanding of what exactly brought together such a unique little tale, but until then I may need to go back and watch this film once or twice again, to catch any jokes I might have missed while I was cracking up the first time around.
