Written by Scott EdwardsTaking care of the environment has become something that is more near and dear to our hearts. Trying to make the earth a better place for our youth than it was when we got here is something that seems like a good idea, but at times the task seems next to impossible. For many, many years as we have discovered and utilized our fossil fuels to make life easier, but this has had unfortunate effects on the ozone layer that keeps us warm and separated from the cold of space. Jack Tate is working down in Australia with a group of friends on tracking the deterioration of the ozone layer. When an eclipse takes place, something strange starts to happen around the outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania. A rip in the ozone layer is allowing the cold air from the mesosphere to enter the atmosphere and flash freeze anything it comes in to contact with. As news breaks of one of the group's boats running aground, Jack and counterpart Zoe get into the ghost ship and investigate what happened to the crew. With the boat dripping wet on the inside, the two don’t have any idea what could have killed the crew but are certain they will find something on a soaked hard drive. Finding satellite imagery with weather patterns, the two need to think outside of their comfort zone to make a startling discovery. The rip in the ozone layer is allowing a cold blast of air to hit the ocean at -70 to -140 degrees and creating a deadly freeze cloud that has no signs of stopping. Wanting to keep the town safe, Jack tries his hardest to make sure that the locals understand what will happen when the fog hits them. Having made a series of bad decisions in the past, nobody believes his discovery and decide not to cause a panic until they have the cold hard facts, which means that Jack needs to find a way to protect the local population along with, more importantly, his family, from this devastating arctic blast. Arctic Blast follows Jack Tate as he transplants to Australia for his work. Taking his wife and daughter along with him, his marriage is on the brink of ending as he only puts his work first. With everyone doubting his ability to make a logical decision, Jack has to trust himself and the ones that trust him to get the all of the facts together to protect the area. Meeting opposition at every turn, Jack comes up with a plan to fix the rip in the ozone, but once again needs to have someone with more authority to have his back to save the town along with possibly the world. Just like a good disaster movie should do, it makes you think about what you would and could do in the situation. With everyone fighting the facts that are put in front of them, it makes this story a bit more lifelike than we are usually used to. With a little bit of science, some great frozen positions and some witty dialogue, Arctic Blast is just a ton of fun. If a true disaster is on its way and there is nothing anyone could do about it, you have to ask yourself if you would really want to know about the impending doom. Would you run, would you burrow or would you make the best of your remaining hours? For me, I would definitely run! Happy viewing.

Written by Scott EdwardsClean energy is something that the entire world has been trying to harness for years. A way to keep our costs down along with the pollution that humans cause on a daily basis seems to the key to keeping the planet healthy and alive for the future. Although it seems like nothing can replace our cars, our gas powered stoves or energy that is provided by the burning of coal, it is a hope to cut these consumptions down drastically in the near future. At Helios World, the goal is to harness the power of solar flares and store it in large batteries under the earth’s surface. Being able to capture the power of these flares is one thing, but transporting that energy from space back down to the earth is something else that takes many talented minds. Using the power of magnetism, the group has come up with a process that should be efficient and harmless to the environment. Running simulations for months leading up to the big event, Doctor Michael Edwards and his girlfriend Rebecca have confidence in the process and are ready to make history. With their leader Jonathan Kane pushing the group at every point in the process to make this a profitable venture, he will not allow for any type of failure. As the first download of solar flare power is moved to the earth’s surface, a small glitch takes place causing a minimal loss of two percent of the total energy to be lost. Although the loss of energy is well within acceptable parameters, Michael and Rebecca need to find out for themselves where it went. Fifteen miles away from the Helios facility a small gas station is hit with an event that drags everything metal in one direction. Shortly after the event hit, it dissipated, but it has left everyone shaken up and the surrounding area polarized. Michael and Rebecca arrive at the scene and come up with a theory that it could have to do with the missing power from their download. Not being able to prove anything, they need to find a way to track the anomaly and save everyone in its path. With their boss Jonathan not wanting to hear about the possible problem at hand and only focusing on the financial upside of what the group has accomplished, he will stop Michael and Rebecca from blowing the whistle on the project. With the second solar flare download only a few hours away, and taking place in France, Michael has to find a way to change his boss’ mind about going forward with the project. As more and more strange occurrences start to take place in the town and metal is being pulled into a magnetic vortex, the anomaly is starting to move towards more populated areas and could cause the loss of human life on a catastrophic level. This is just a fun ride as you get to see what the risks and benefits are of trying to harness clean energy from space. Although all of the methods the group uses in the movie have been simulated and tested, they never thought that a loss of energy could create something so destructive. Putting their priorities first on saving lives is touching and seeing how the money man will not put the brakes on the project is what adds the real life feeling into this movie. Which is more important to you in a disaster? Saving lives or making money? Written by Scott EdwardsAs global warming starts to take over in the usually cold confines of Antarctica, a cave that has been discovered needs to be investigated. Although the conditions are not optimal to do this, Dr. David Kotzman and his team have been instructed to do so by their benefactor. With the previous team of students being sent home for the season, the established group of scientists are the last chance for any type of analysis before the region freezes over again. However, a massive snow storm hits the area as the investigation is taking place, killing most of the team off. David and longtime friend Hershel have to find a way to survive and find some protection in the cave. While saving their own lives, the two find a body that has been frozen for over ten thousand years along with a cave painting that may date back that long ago as well. Returning to his warm home, David confronts his boss Dr. Veet and is trying to gain a handle on what happened on his expedition. As Miami is going through a strange weather shift, David is faced with a decision on whether to stay with the group that has been paying him for his efforts or to quit his job and do his research on his own dime. Needing to find a reason for the strange shifts and extreme weather events that are taking place, he has to turn to an old friend that deals with geology and find out if there is a shift on the magnetic axis of the planet. As the weather starts to get colder in the usually tropical region of Florida, David and his newly formed team have run the numbers and have found that a polar shift is about to take place, but over not a period of several years, but within hours instead. Trying to save everyone he can, David pleads his case to a senator with his young team, but does not get the time of day until a huge snow storm blows into Miami beach causing havoc. The storms are to produce a cold front that no one living has ever witnessed, making the temperature negative 273 degrees or...Absolute Zero. Absolute Zero follows Dr. David Kotzman as he tries to continue to be the leader in his field and make sure he contributes to the grants for his company. Wanting to get answers from his employer Dr. Veet, David is shut out of what is really happening as the magnetic poles are starting to shift causing catastrophic weather events. Without getting the help he needs to prove this theory, David turns back to his old friend and geologist Jeff Miller to try to exact a theory and timeframe of the events. Teaming up with a couple of Jeff’s students, along with his wife and daughter, David looks for a way to protect the group from freezing to death as the earth realigns. Just a fun disaster movie that plays on the fear of being left in the dark. Not everybody has the knowledge or the means to find out what is happening at all times and so having to find the people that can help you survive is a key factor. As David has to put his faith into people he does not know, he is plesantly surprised by the results. It goes to show that in a time of crisis, depending on others may not be the worst thing you could do. Keep warm and remember to watch your compass to make sure that magnetic north is where it is supposed to be. Happy viewing. Written by Scott EdwardsI was like most kids when growing up, I loved dinosaurs! Although they were extinct for many years before I was born, I still would play with my toys, read the books about them and watch any type of movie or documentary on the ancient beasts. Still, to this day, there are possible sightings of some of these beasts and I will admit, I would love to see one. Jonathan Marchant and his team have seen the recent reports coming out of the Congo that involve the Mokele Mbembe, a creature that resembles the Loch Ness Monster. Wanting to be able to prove to the world that this creature actually exists, he takes a film crew on an adventure to capture the amazing feat of a living, breathing dinosaur that should have been extinct many centuries ago. Jonathan is traveling with his longtime assistant Charlie Rutherford who works more behind the scenes than anything else while Jonathan gets all of the credit. Although he says that he is okay without getting all of the publicity, Charlie has a longing to be in the spotlight. Jonathan’s son Luke is also looking to make a name for himself, along with spending more time with his father and decides to stowaway on the team’s flight to the Congo. Being discovered by his father, Luke brings his own video equipment along for the search for Mokele Mbembe to keep his own video diary of what actually happens. Although Jonathan is not happy with the addition of his son on the excursion, he has no choice since they are on a one way trip into the jungle. Seeing some large flying ‘birds’ out of their helicopter window, the team finds themselves on a fast decent to the forest floor. Seeing that these large flying creatures do not fly like normal birds, Luke knows that there is something strange in the jungle and prepares his cameras to document everything that is forthcoming. The Dinosaur Project focuses on Jonathan Marchant as he is leading an expedition to find proof that the Mokele Mbembe exists. Having his flight taken down by what he considers Jungle Water Fowl, he has to try to find shelter in what appears to be an abandoned jungle village that shows signs of an attack. Not knowing what could have caused this, the team moves on down river and starts to encounter strange occurrences being directed towards them and outlandish howls coming from something other than the local wildlife. Finding and befriending a group of young Stegosauri, Luke attaches one of his cameras to them and finds out that there is more to the surrounding area than they ever expected and the group is in for the find of a lifetime. As the movie progresses, you get more and more intrigued about what you will be seeing next. Knowing that the search is for only one creature, watching how the group reacts to finding more than they could have ever expected is priceless. With their guide being a local woman who believes in a curse that surrounds the area, along with a Gateway that allows the ancient beasts to pass back through at their own pace makes you feel a little uneasy as the group chooses to disregard her warnings. Seeing a father and son hunting dinosaurs is priceless and brings back memories of my youth while my father would join in and play along with me and my toys. Keep looking forward, for you never know what you will find these days. Happy viewing. Written by Scott EdwardsNeeding to spend time with friends before a life altering event could be a necessity for many people. When you are ready to take your life, relationship or career to the next step, checking in with your friends and getting their opinion on the matter could help you make sure that you are making the right decision. They are your friends of course and should always be willing to tell you if something seems off or not right and not have to worry about biting their tongues, but also as friends they want to see you happy and will stay quiet if that seems like the right thing to do. Robert and Jenny are looking to start their life together and they can think of no better way to celebrate their engagement than by renting a cabin and having their closest friends along for the trip. Knowing that their friends want nothing but the best for the happy couple, they know that they will be taken care of quite nicely for the weekend. So they share their time with Hayden and Sandy along with Michael and Brian and they are also joined by Annie. Even though Annie is an old friend of Robert’s, Jenny is holding back what she really thinks about Robert and Annie's past. With plenty of alcohol, a bag of weed and just a little bit of cocaine, the group is ready for a wonderful night under the stars. Since everyone is from the big city, they have never seen a sky so full of light and wonder, and they were told by the landlady that it looks so much better when you are under the influence. The couples prepare for the night, and while everyone is trying to get the inside scoop about how Robert proposed to Jenny, they take solace in their vices and relax for the evening. When Jenny and Robert step out on the porch of the cabin, they see a barrage of shooting stars. Making sure that no one misses the show, they call everyone outside to watch. However the show ends with a distant explosion forcing Hayden and Sandy to go out and investigate. When morning comes, everyone is fighting the worst of hangovers and they discover Hayden did not make it back to the house. Sandy is very concerned about her boyfriend’s whereabouts and gets the group to go out searching for their friend. Finding Hayden naked and unconscious in a field, the group believes that he just had too much fun and needs to sleep it off, but when he awakens, he is someone else. When the next night falls, the group is frightened by a mysterious power outage in the cabin and strange sounds coming out of the woods. Not knowing what it could possibly be, they try to investigate but another member of their group goes missing and returns just like Hayden did, changed. As the days and nights pass, the group stays together, but one by one they are becoming someone other than themselves without any explanation. Not bad for an alien movie that is dealing with abductions, along with trying to be a scare flick. Grey Skies brings enough humor and some solid scares even though some of the camera work gets a little too first person. As always in a horror flick, you have to focus on the personal relationships in the group dynamic to figure out who is going to get killed off first, but when you add an alien threat into the mix, all bets are off. Keeping the villains out of the light and not allowing anyone to get a good look at them is one of the greatest things any monster movie can do to keep the audience guessing and using their own imagination to picture what the real threat is and this movie does this just right. Although I would say this is more Sci-Fi then Horror, it does just fine delivering in either realm. Happy Viewing and Stay Scared. |
