For the most part, stories that offer up surprises… tend to stop offering them at a certain point. All so that the audience can slowly digest the shocking twists and turns that have already come into play, and so that the story can handle and explore the fallout from them and of course… to focus on the overall story ahead. Which makes sense, since sometimes we really do need a moment to process the wonders we’ve seen. But now and again, you run into a series that believes we can handle more, and it provides us with nothing but one epic stunner after another and one particular series that has figured out how to master giving its fans surprise after surprise… is The Ark on SYFY. Simply because we are six episodes in and find ourselves walking away from every episode with an incredible twist that drops our jaws, and one way that this series has made this work, is by quickly and smoothly resolving other surprises in a simple and impactful manner. So, we can quickly digest them and prepare ourselves for the next one, and well… it’s a wonderful thing that such smooth storytelling is the case, because ‘Two by Two’ offered up some of the biggest surprises in this series to date. That is, after giving us a real sense of calm. For when we caught up with the crew in this tale… life was indeed returning back to normal, several months after Lane came to discover that William Trust and his wife were carefully tucked away on the ship. For crops were beginning to grow and food was finding its way to the table, and minus a few health issues for Lieutenant Brice and the good doctor, who finally had her addiction catch up to her… there was nothing wild happening aboard the ship. But of course… since this show plays in reality-based elements, a fuel crisis brought back the intensity. Because Eva came to discover that the ship was beginning to run low on Uranium fuel, which would end their voyage through the stars. Which brought forth a daring plan to use the gravity of a sun to hurl the ship toward a planet that Eva identified had enough Uranium to get the crew to their destination. A plan that mostly worked, since it did require the captain to head out there in a tense moment to ensure the solar sails would continue to push the ship forward. Which of course, wounded the captain, and while she recovered, a new concern came forth for the crew. In that, the violent foreign substance that nearly destroyed the ship was detected at their destination, and that prompted Brice and Eva to head out that way, to scout ahead and try and keep the ship out of danger and well… what they found brought forth the giant surprise in question. For when they arrived at the planet, they found… nothing actually. Not even the Uranium they were eagerly searching for, and they didn’t detect it on the surface because it, and the evil alien substance weren’t on the planet. They instead… were both together on the other side of the planet, quietly waiting aboard another Ark type vessel. A surprise that basically meant, Trust and his team sent out another Ark well before Ark One, and well… clearly something happened to it and who knows what has happened to its crew, and there are so many other questions surrounding that stunner… and the other revelations in this tale as well. Such as how long Brice actually has because of his illness and what has happened to Earth since Trust has taken the meaning of the word ‘Ark’ quite literally. But while we wait for the answers on those twists and turns, we can celebrate one epic tale. One that made it clear that other surprises were indeed being resolved to prepare for the biggest one yet, and we say yet, because there may be more on the horizon as this intrepid journey chugs along and once again… we are left desperate for more of this incredible story. Because we need those answers, and sadly we must wait, to learn more about this mystery Ark. Until next time.
