We firmly believe, that whenever someone commits a heroic act, of any kind, positive recognition is in order. Because they went above and beyond to do something wonderful and they likely kept people safe in the process, so yes… their bravery and their decision to protect should indeed be celebrated by all. But while that is an uplifting and joyous belief to hold to, it, like many things in this life… isn’t always so black and white. Because sometimes… heroic acts aren’t grounded in nobility and sacrifice. They come forth out of a sense of survival or they might come to fruition courtesy of circumstances that are not positive in the slightest, making the act nothing more than a reactionary moment. Which is why we need to take the time to really weigh the details of what went down, to properly understand if a celebratory moment is at hand or one of pause. If anything, the need to ponder upon the true genesis of a heroic act is top of mind today simply because that was something Captain Garnet had to ponder upon in the next episode of The Ark on SYFY. For ‘Every Single Person Matters’ was a story that picked up a short while after Lieutenant Lane roused William Trust from his slumber to send his command codes over to Ark Three to prevent the ship’s destruction. An act that could indeed be seen as heroic. But since it was born from deception and remained mired in deception… since Lane refused to answer hails or inform the captain of how this went down (in part because he took a shot to the skull from Trust’s wife, Helena), it fell into that cloudier territory regarding noble/heroic acts. Simply because… Lane understood this was a reactionary measure, one that would bring forth strife and trouble and that was most certainly the case. Because eventually, Strickland and his search party found the secret Trust cabin, and they of course had Lane stand before the captain to answer for his actions and since Captain Garnet took the time to properly question Lane and come to understand that his actions were not heroic, but grounded in deceit and survival instinct, the Lieutenant paid the price. By having his rank stripped from his shoulders. For Garnet simply would not stand for this kind of rogue and reckless behavior, and the extended fallout from Lane’s decision, only made life harder for the captain. Because William Trust was not well-liked or respected aboard this vessel, and that led to some serious and scary conflict. The kind that saw Brice straight up serve a knuckle sandwich to ‘The Savior of Humanity’ and other people were quick to spit at his feet and chew him and his wife out. But having him aboard did have its merits. Since the FTL drive didn’t quite work as planned and had it not been for Trust’s quick thinking and ability to move and inspire people into action, who knows if the ship would have survived a brush with faster than light travel. But that was really the only major benefit to waking him early. Since he quickly resumed his troublesome ways in matters of love with Cat and discussed in some detail with her… a plan that clearly came to life during their time on Earth. And of course… he inspired Lane to stand with him at all costs. All of which made for a fine lesson on how heroism can be subjective and sullied at times, when doing the right thing for the wrong reasons comes into play and Trust’s time on the ship, brought forth one fascinating exploration regarding this enigmatic character. Simply because, it was intriguing to learn about William Trust and his relationship with the world and the power he yields and clearly… he will serve as an allegory for the ridiculously rich in this tale and provide commentary on such matters in the weeks to come and he will likely bring forth more trouble as well. Since guys like Trust don’t like sitting on the sidelines for very long and he clearly has an agenda brewing and speaking of trouble… it would seem that Kelly has an agenda of her own. One that involves winning the trust of dear Angus and well, that also adds to the fascination surrounding this tale, since we are now dying to know what will come of Kelly’s machinations and of course… what Trust will do now that he is awake and building his own coalition, and checking in on old business, and that is going to make the wait for next week’s episode, as painful as can be. Until next time.
