‘Quantum Leap’ Recap: ‘Off the Cuff’

These days, it is supremely hard for a television show to deeply surprise an audience. Simply because, audiences are savvier than ever, and are onto the tricks that are sometimes used to lead us into a surprise. Which is why it is always wondrous, when a show manages to completely and utterly take us off guard. Because it means the writer’s room of that show figured out a way to offer us something new and exciting and well, it just so happens that the talented writers over at Quantum Leap on NBC, pulled off that particular feat and brought forth a stunning episode for the show’s season two midseason premiere.

For ‘Off the Cuff’ was a story… that at first seemed to be free of this season’s central plot threads and mysteries. In fact, it appeared to be a grand homage to the 1988 motion picture, Midnight Run. For Ben leapt into the body of a bounty hunter that was dragging back quite the prize. A scuzzy, Saul Goodman-esque lawyer named Kevin who had mob ties. Which put this duo on a difficult journey back since the mob was after Kevin, truly hammering home the homage. One that was further enhanced by some good laughs, and some epic action. But there were some deep questions present. as to why this particular man was a focus for Ben. Because Kevin harbored very little redeeming qualities as a person.

That’s when the surprises came into play. For once Kevin and Ben arrived at the home of Kevin’s brother, Josh, did it become clear that this story was deeply tied to one fascinating plot thread. Specifically, Ben and Hannah’s love affair through time and how they were drawn to one another… with a twist in this instance. For Hannah as it turned out, was married to Josh, and started a family with him. A move that shocked Ben to no end since he thought somehow, they could be together perfectly, but also… Hannah should be not denied life’s pursuits. So, Ben was forced to reconcile this reality and of course… he was ready to step in and save her from trouble. Since the mob were on their way to bring Kevin in, putting everyone in the house at risk.

Which brought forth, another wondrous team up between these time-crossed lovebirds. One that was successful in saving the day and one that also… brought about more surprises. Because we, and for that matter, Addison, finally came to understand how deep the connection was between this duo. After all, time and technology used Ben’s draw to her to bring them together in the most outlandish manner possible. Which… gave Addison pause. Because clearly, time travel had changed everything between her and Ben. For it put them on two vastly different paths emotionally, and in reality. Because they had new perspective regarding love, and the moment, and that prompted Addison to realize, she had to let Ben go romantically. Which was why she said yes… when Tom finally popped the question.

All of which gave rise, to one stunning episode. Because in essence, Ben is now laser focused on using his leaps to get near Hannah and protect her and nurture her, regardless of the circumstances. And that is a stunning twist that none of us saw coming, nor did we know was possible in this universe. But it’s happening and it’s powerful, and of course… this also changed the dynamic between Ben and Addison and… this is a twist that is changing the course of the show. Because now, there’s new stakes, and new drama to come about from a love affair for the ages. Something we didn’t see in the original show. Which adds new depth and new possibilities for this franchise, and it will be fascinating to see where this twist will take us, and what other surprises await us… as season two of this brilliant show continues along.
