It is definitely safe to say that the final season of Killing Eve on BBC America has been nothing short of a masterclass exploration on the dangers of revenge. Because minute by minute, we’ve watched the fire that revenge starts, burn the souls of three people we care about. To the point where they’ve made poor and angry choices that aren’t like them in the slightest and well… it would seem this exploration isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. Because revenge is a state of being that is host to many more destructive phases and this week’s episode saw our trio of heroes/antiheroes indulge in the next phase. Which involves… snapping at those that matter to us and indulging in whatever vendetta we can to satiate our needs. A feat that ‘Oh Goodie, I’m the Winner’ accomplished by having the trio turn upon one another in unique ways. But not before a reunion came into play. For shortly after Villanelle was stabbed in the back with an arrow from a clever assassin from the Twelve, everyone minus Carolyn, came together in Pam’s hotel room to remove the offending arrow and take a moment to regroup and think and well… this was the first inkling that things were going to be ugly in this episode going forward. Because there was the wrong kind of tension between Villanelle and Eve and understandably so. After all, the latter had the former locked up as a measure of revenge regarding their past and Villanelle’s association with the Twelve and that led to a lot of icy moments between the two of them. The kind that motivated them to go their separate ways and return to their respective plans. Which for Villanelle involved getting complete revenge upon Helene, and for Eve, she wanted information from Helene. Which eventually brought the two of them to her hotel room wherein Villanelle had quite the decision to make. Wait on her need for revenge and bloodlust and let Eve finally break her former handler and get the intelligence on the Twelve and win the day or indulge in her fury. Sadly, being blinded by what the vendetta does to one’s soul, motivated Villanelle to choose the latter option and just put Helene down for good, robbing her former love interest of any worthwhile information and putting this skilled assassin in a dark place, since she found no solace in getting what she wanted. But of course, that kind of ugly engenders more ugly as evidenced by what Eve did next. Because she was furious that she was robbed of a chance to handle the Twelve on her own and that motivated her to track down Carolyn and Lars. Wherein she let loose on Carolyn regarding her lies, and she also did the unthinkable. In that, she stormed into that cabin and killed Lars with impunity. In essence ruining Carolyn’s chance to get answers, completing a vicious and unhealthy cycle of revenge. One that speaks to its power and how it destroys us slowly and forces us to do horrible things and well… this particular twist deserves a round of applause since it was dark and realistic and put the plot on a whole new course. Because now the trio are shattered in every way imaginable and lost to the wind. Since Eve disappeared to who knows where and Villanelle, well she went to try and hang out with the assassin that tried to kill her with the arrow. Simply because she too wanted to escape the world after dealing with years of chaos and pain. Making it seem for a brief moment that this story will end with just devastation and sorrow since all was lost at this point. But Carolyn’s quick thinking, may in fact, have kept the search for the Twelve and the quest for revenge alive. Since she did grab hold of the little black book that Lars had on his person and that could provide clues regarding the identities and locations of the senior leadership of the Twelve. Which could in turn, pull Eve and Villanelle out of their funk and refocus them one last time to bring these bastards down at last. But even then, it may be nothing more than a hurtful discovery that will lead to a pyrrhic victory at best. For revenge has brought them all to their lowest and darkest points and it will be interesting to see if they can find a way to be made whole again… or if darkness will consume them in the end and speaking of the end… we don’t have long to wait to find out how their journey is going to come to a close. For Sunday will bring forth the two-hour series finale of this phenomenal show and that is going to make the wait for said finale both excruciating and bittersweet. For while we cannot wait to finally see how this all comes together, we will also have to say goodbye to one of the most unique and dynamic spy shows to ever hit the airwaves. Until next time.
