At some point or another in our lives, we’ve all pondered upon what it would be like… to work in radio in some capacity. Simply because, there’s a real cool aura that surrounds radio hosts. After all, they get to sit back and discuss important topics with people and do amazing interviews. Or they get to put together some of the best music out there and play it for the world. Not to mention, what a fun job that would outright be. One that would just let us go home with joy every day. But in reality, radio hosting is indeed work like anything else and perhaps not as easy as we give it credit. But to really garner some idea of this old curiosity of ours, the next episode of In the Know on Peacock, opted to explore what the job looks like and some of its struggles, in the most hilarious manner possible. For ‘Whose House?’ took place during an important day at NPR. Specifically, it was pledge day. When the studio needed to raise tens of thousands of dollars to keep Lauren on the air and the staff employed and well, since a big spender was dropping by to offer up a check, provided that he also received an in-depth tour of the studio, to really understand how the sausage was made, a great deal of on-air duties fell to Fabian and Carl and well… that allowed for us to learn how radio work, is not an easy task. Because despite hosting a podcast weekly and being boisterous, once the ‘On Air’ sign flashed red, Fabian basically lost the plot, and use of her mental faculties. To the point where words were scrambled often, and where rambling took place. To the point where Carl had no clue how to help her or settle her down, and her breaks were so bad and so outlandish that at one point, she basically asked Carl to step in to clear her mind. Which in turn, sent Carl down a similar path of concerning verbal behavior. Simply because… both of them learned that being on the air was no easy task and it took a certain mindset and a certain drive and sadly… their nervousness brought about trouble. For the pledges were not coming in, and any hope of making the day end well, fell to pieces when Lauren learned exactly why his guest was so hell-bent on having the tour. Because it was less about learning and more about getting to know Lauren, so he could poach him and start a podcast with him. Prompting Lauren to have to choose between NPR and between a financial future of comfort and well, in the end… while his coworkers were oft wonky and while the job could indeed be stressful… he couldn’t leave NPR behind. So, he stood pat and his passion oddly inspired Fabian to just let loose in a manner that probably earned the network a year’s worth of financing in fines, but they likely took in triple that to keep the lights on, so all was well. But what mattered most here, was that this story did indeed inform us the job isn’t as glamorous as we’ve always thought and hoped, it’s dedicated work. The kind that requires a special mindset and some serious love of the craft. And all of that was wonderfully counterbalanced, by way of so many hilarious moments. Because the cast once again shined here and sold some amazing laughs with their talents. With Carl Tart and Caitlin Reilly leading the way with their discombobulated moments in the booth. In fact, Caitlin deserves a shout out here for just letting loose with and well, now that we’ve reached the end of this lesson, it will be interesting to see what other inner workings of the world of radio, and what other kinds of laughs, we’ll be privy to in stories to come. Until next time. Watch ‘In the Know’
