When we think of comfort food, let’s be honest, we think of meals that aren’t all that healthy for us. Instead, our mind drifts to foods that are greasy and stick to our ribs because having that kind of semi-unhealthy food, find its way into our bellies really does give us comfort after a long day and there’s nothing wrong with that. Because we like what we like. But with that in mind, it is important to note that comfort food extends beyond a greasy package of fries or a burger that is coated in sauces that would make our family doctor angry. Sometimes it’s just something delicious that clicks with our taste buds that brings us great joy. If anything, that type of meal is top of mind today, simply because it made an appearance in the next episode of Fast Foodies. For Wrestling Superstar Chris Jericho stopped by the kitchen for this week’s competition and well, the food that brings him down home joy and comfort… was breakfast. Breakfast from Cracker Barrel to be exact. Because their Momma’s Pancake Breakfast meal, one that comes with apples and amazing pancakes… and that Chris removes the unhealthy stuff from, brings him joy on a consistent basis and well, he was hoping the Foodies could recreate this dish to a tee, especially those pancakes… and what came out of those attempts, was downright fascinating and hilarious at times to say the least. Because while Jeremy matched some of the consistency, his pancakes were uh…. well look, they were raw. So, that happened. As for Justin, he matched a fair amount of the dish, since his eggs and apples were solid, but the pancakes just weren’t close enough. Which meant that it was up to Kristen to save the day and be the one to recreate the true favorite dish of a superstar wrestler and lo and behold… she managed to match the dish to his satisfaction, bringing her closer to a total victory. Provided of course she could land the remix portion of the competition and speaking of that segment of the show… the Foodies straight up impressed this week. Because they leaned hard into their creative side to impress the iconic Mister Jericho. Kristen for instance, brought forth a fascinating Herbed Pasta with a Confit Egg Yolk and this writer uses the word fascinating, because you don’t normally associate pasta with breakfast dishes. But Kristen made that happen in a beautiful and impressive manner. As for Justin, he created a Poached Duck Egg with Polenta and Bourbon Sauce Gastrique, giving life to a breakfast food that was both filling and elegant and delicious. But while both those dishes were creative and impressive for certain, Jeremy is the one who blew Chris Jericho away with his Benton’s Bacon, Latkes and Apple Marmalade dish. Because it captured the down-home southern feel of Cracker Barrel and was full of flavor that Chris relished over and well… that meant that Jeremy was crowned, this week’s Chompion. In fact, he did such a great job, he got an awesome Breakfast Chompionship Belt. One that actually featured breakfast in the center of the belt, and he got to torch the visages of his fellow chefs to hammer home his standing as the Breakfast King and well… in the end, this was just another great and fun episode. Because not only was it full of colorful and hilarious moments, but it once again reminded us that food is the just the best, and that we find comfort and joy in all kinds of unique meals and well, now that this breakfast themed bonanza has come to a close, it will be quite interesting to see what other unique recreations await the Foodies as season two cooks along. Until next time.
