‘Chrissy & Dave Dine Out’ Recap: ‘Bring the Pizza!’

One particular aspect of the human condition that is genuinely fascinating, is how we tend to gloss over important traditions that we all take part in and mean the world to us. Because more often than not, when we talk about tradition, or give it thought, our minds drift to the special ones that tie to our family. The ones we learned about and took part in growing up, and now exercise in adulthood to keep them alive. Which of course, are important and worth cherishing, but those aren’t the only time-honored traditions that deserve that level of care and that level of agency. For the other ones we take part in… are just as special and provide us with important formative moments that we take with us into our everyday lives.

Such as the time-honored tradition of breaking bread with friends and family. For that really is a universal human tradition, one that allows for us to bond over a meal and be reminded of why we share that relationship with that person or persons, and we do take it for granted now and again. As though it is nothing more than a general act when it is quite special, quite moving. Since sometimes… it is a meal akin to that, which brings forth the love of our lives as we bond over dessert, or where we heal with a kindred spirit and after the last couple of years… it absolutely needs to be recognized more, and it just so happens… that a brand-new series on Freeform makes a point to do just that. 

For last night saw the debut of Chrissy & Dave Dine Out on the network and ‘Bring the Pizza!’ made it inherently clear that this show will indeed be about celebrating the time-honored tradition of sitting down with friends to eat. With a twist of course. Since hosts, Chrissy Teigen, Joel Kim Booster, and David Chang, invite some celebrity guests along for dinner. Wherein everyone gets to know everyone in that intimate manner that only a dinner can provide and well, this makes a fascinating show. In part because we get to see the human side of celebrities, something we need more of in this world. Since all too often we forget that celebrities are indeed people, and going this route will indeed help with that. Since we were able to see a different side of Jimmy Kimmel, and his lovely wife, Molly, and learn about them as people.

But while that alone could have carried the premiere of this show, it still had so much offer us. Such as how the episode also reminded us of how exciting a process it is to go out and enjoy a meal with friends. Because there is an excitement that comes with making plans, and that spreads when we get there and see the menu and get to taste delicious food and learn about the menu and in the right restaurant, the chef. Which David handled in this tale since he spent a fair time in the kitchen with Chris Bianco to learn about how a great pizza is made. Which added a touch of flare and depth to this episode, making it part celebration of the meal, part dinner interview and part cooking show. But what matters most here, is that all of these elements combine to bring about… a wondrously unique new series.

One that really does celebrate a long-standing tradition in a manner that has never been celebrated before. Because we don’t put meals like this on a pedestal. But we should. For this is just as important as the ones we take part in when we gather with family for the holidays, we just do this one more often and enjoy it every single time. And we connect deeply with those we break bread, or in this case, pizza, and that makes for a refreshing series that outright hooks you. Because now you want to see what other celebrities will open up over the course of a meal, and what amazing foods everyone is going to eat. But most important of all, you get to enjoy something that you can relate to and can take part in vicariously. Which brings forth happiness and a real motivation, to call up your bestie and invite them out to take part in that all-important bonding tradition, of dining with someone that brings you joy.
