When we last settled in to discuss the wondrous Amazon Freevee series, Bosch: Legacy, we talked at length about how the series was going in some bold directions in its first year. For this is a series that basically two took major plot points… and resolved them in the middle of the season. Something that is unheard of in a crime drama and doing so, left the audience and this writer eagerly pondering upon what could be next for Bosch and his friends, now that Rogers was toast and Vance’s lackeys had let Harry go. Well as it turns out, the next episode in this magnificent series, wasted little time in answering all that by informing us… that it was first going to explore a proper resolution to those two plot threads. The kind that would in fact, bring one of them to an utterly finite conclusion. For early on in ‘Chain of Authenticity’, we came to learn that Rogers was, of course, looking for some kind of sweetheart deal for turning himself into the authorities. The kind that would benefit him and keep him comfortable in every way and well, when that didn’t materialize, Carl thought he needed to look out for number one. Which in turn motivated him to drug his federal escorts and escape into the night in the hopes of getting out of dodge on his own terms and that of course, put Honey and Bosch onto his trail. Thankfully… it didn’t take long for this dynamic duo to figure out what Carl’s plan of escape was, and it was in fact… quite the doozy. For dear Carl set up shipping containers to escape upon. Ones complete with air conditioning and food and water for a long trip to Vietnam, where he could live free and clear. But there was just one problem with his plans. In that, the Russians wanted payback of some kind, and at this point… they were ready to have that in blood. Which is why they shot Carl’s scummy lawyer, before handling Carl themselves. In front of Honey no less, since she got there minutes before the whole mess went down. But despite the horror of that, it did give Honey and Harry closure. Because that was it, Carl Rogers was gone forever and they were whole again and this was a bold way to close out that story, one that hundred percent ensures we will never hear about or from this villain again. As for the Vance plot thread… well it came back to life in this tale in a very unique manner. Because Harry received a handwritten Last Will and Testament from Whitney Vance, out of the blue. One that made him sole executor to the Vance empire, making him a billionaire overnight. But the why behind such a move is what made this so curious and special. Because it speaks to a lack of trust on Whitney’s part when it comes to his team and perhaps a hidden hope that Harry will do the right thing when and if he finds an heir. But what matters more, is that just like that… the Vance plot line is suddenly alive and well and will come to its proper close courtesy of Harry and his fine work as an investigator and it was quite amazing to see it come back to life here. But of course, what would an episode of this show be without a touch of realism thrown in for good measure? And that was of course, handled by Maddie. Since the shooting of an officer, she went to the Academy with, exposed her to the dangers of the job and the realities of its darker side and that led to some intimate character moments between daughter and father and well, in the end, this was just another great episode. One that continued to shake things up plot wise and continued to surprise us with bold storytelling decisions and well, now that we’ve reached the end of the Rogers fiasco, it would seem that new horizons await Harry and Honey… and that there is more to Vance case than we originally expected. And it will be fascinating to see what comes next for Harry as we inch toward the end of this new chapter in his storied life. Until next time.
