Traditions are viewed in quite the positive light and understandably so. For they are designed to celebrate rich moments in either human history and/or family history and taking part in them, keeps the past alive and honors our elders, and we should be proud of taking part in such an act. But what’s fascinating about humanity, is that… as is the case with a lot in our world… we tend to ignore the fact that not all traditions are positive in nature. We only want to see them as lovely, and that’s why we don’t think about the negative things we do on days that are anniversaries of something painful or toxic in our lives, as is tradition. Nor we do like to talk about some of the uglier American ones that happen within our cities. Take for instance, ‘Devil’s Night’ in Detroit. An evening where frustrated citizens of a city that has struggled to take care of its people, take to the streets, and burn whatever they can for catharsis. Something that is obviously negative in nature and should not be done… but it became habit, tradition, because of the release it offered an angry populace and well, that tradition and the negativity and fury it spread to all, is top of mind today because it served as the setting for last night’s episode of BMF. For last night’s episode, which shared the namesake of that dark day… saw the darkness this ugly holiday generated spread to the characters we know and love. Which caught them up in some ugly vibes and ugly moments. For this is a night that inspired a need for vengeance from Terry. Because he paid the piper for messing with the brochures of that other car company. Which in turn motivated him to get some real ugly payback, the kind that will force that rival business to stumble and force its boss to heal for a bit since Terry and Meech tuned him up. Speaking of Meech, well he was dealing with a double whammy of issues with his business. In that, B-Mickie was being pressed to lie to him and bring him in. A move that came about from the fact that he was beginning to question his life in the drug trade since he learned that Kota died with his baby in her womb, and because he and Meech saw the ugliness of their business firsthand when Meech was searching for Travis at K-9’s bequest, to garner more product. Because this year’s Devil’s Night was in the midst of a drought thanks to a DEA seizure off the Florida coast and bringing Travis in would secure product. But alas, B-Mickie put Travis down too, which lost BMF the product and potentially prompted him to betray someone he was close to, regardless of his concerns about the business. But a new problem prevented that. Simply because, Lamar was healed enough to function and was going about town to see his family from afar and of course, he was watching and waiting for a chance to strike and strike he did. Since he pulled up mere moments before Meech left to arrive at his own arrest and struck true with a single bullet. Putting Meech on the road to the hospital and recovery. Which was sadly, the perfect and fitting end to this dark and ugly night of twisted tradition. If anything, this was… quite the bold episode. Since everyone outside of the Flenory brothers indulged in darkness as well. Since we saw Charles ponder upon infidelity, and even Bryant and Veronica went to some ugly places mentally, and it was quite powerful to see Meech and B-Mickie stare down the end result of what they do and the sorrow and strife that comes with it and this episode, deserves a round of applause for going this route. Since it really hammered home the dark nature of the drug world and what it does to users and pushers and kingpins alike, and writer Mike Nguyen Le also deserves some applause, for perfectly blending everything together in this tale and setting the stage for dark horizons. Because not only are we left stunned at the end of this one, but also worried. For this episode was likely a harbinger of things to come since ‘the life’ is only going to get harder as this journey continues along. Until next time.
