Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episodes Five & Six of ‘Three Pines’. To revisit the previous episodes, click here.
Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked at length about the unconventional nature of the Prime Video series, Three Pines, and rightfully so. Because not only does this crime drama feature intricate cases that we don’t often see in shows of this caliber, but it continues to find new ways to challenge the audience and its characters via its casework. And of course, it’s making sure to follow up on every plot thread introduced in the series premiere of the show and it would seem that this is indeed going to be a standard. For, ‘The Murder Stone’, just so happen to be another pair of episodes that defied expectations, and kept the storytelling quite fresh, all by surprising us with another supremely unique murder case, and a twist in the Two-River case. For when we catch up with Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in this tale, he and his beloved wife were settling in for a beautiful anniversary getaway at the Chateau Belleforét. But what should have been the perfect romantic getaway for this couple, was quickly sullied by the surprise that took place on the other side of the hotel. Wherein the family of Charles Morrow, including Three Pines residents, Peter, and Clara Marrow, had gathered to read the Last Will and Testament of their now late father and that led to conflict and trouble and murder… courtesy of a brutal end for the heir of the hotel, Julia Morrow. Which was a bold storytelling decision. Because despite the ties to Three Pines present here… such a move did move us out of the town, but it worked, because this new setting and this family gave Armand plenty to work with. Because he and his wondrous team of investigators quickly came to realize that this was a busted family through and through, one that had little respect for love or one another and understandably so. Since money was the ruler of this family’s lives and it drove Charles’ decisions and, in the process, left all of his children broken. Which made this story appear to be a parable about the dangers of greed and how that can come back to bite us. But as it turned out, this was a story about how a lack of love from a family can break an individual, since it eventually was discovered that none of the immediate family took part in this awful murder. Instead, it was the hotel’s manager, Maurice, who also happened to be Charles’ son as well. One born out of wedlock. And all he ever wanted, was to be part of the family officially and feel loved and when denied that again… he snapped. But while it was indeed fascinating to learn that lesson and see that kind of unique case play out, this episode also took the time to advance the Two-Rivers mess in a stunning manner. Because Isabelle made contact with Kevin Kis and he had… some powerful things to say about that dark night regarding Blue. In that, the police likely killed her in a profiling incident, and that they wished to pin the crime on him. Which of course, was why he was on the run, and it took a lot of effort on Isabelle’s part to get him to finally speak with Armand, even after coming to learn he wasn’t lying in the slightest, and all of that effort may have been for naught. Because he was arrested before our heroes could get to him, and to make matters worse… he was found in his cell, within an inch of his life. Courtesy of someone who didn’t want him to say another word about this critical case. Which of course, sets the stage for this case to explode, courtesy of Armand and his team, since they won’t stand for such an injustice. But while we wait to see how that plays out, we can revel in the majesty of another incredible case. One that was unique and refreshing and downright original. Not to mention, it was wondrous to see the setting change but still make us comfortable in the process via the tie-in to Three Pines and expand upon a character we’ve really only met in passing and well, now that we’ve reached the end of this investigation, we are back to counting down the minutes to the next chapter in this saga. To see what intelligent case awaits the team, and to see if at long last… the Two-Rivers investigation will come an end in a just and satisfying manner. Until next time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the ‘Top Gear’ Christmas Special.
One would think that a show about cars, wouldn’t really bother to do a Christmas episode. After all, there’s really nothing festive about a vehicle now is there? Because while we love them so and celebrate all the wonder they can send our way, cars just don’t offer holiday cheer, and they don’t exactly fit in with the season since Santa uses a sleigh and eight tiny reindeer to deliver presents around the world, not a bright red Porsche 911. Although, let’s be honest… that would be pretty awesome. But all pondering aside, a lack of holiday ties isn’t something that would keep Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris from trying to create a holiday celebration grounded in cars, as evidenced by the Top Gear Christmas Special, ‘Driving Home for Christmas’. For this trio of creative hosts clearly told everyone at BBC America and the BBC that it was in fact, quite possible to make a show about cars as festive as can be and well… it turns out they were right. And all it takes to make a show about cars as festive and as fun as a traditional holiday special… is to inject the wonder of the season into a special episode. Wherein the lads each gifted one another, the perfect Christmas car to fit its driver and the lads chose well. Since Chris got behind the wheel of a Citroen BX 4x4 GTi, and Paddy finally got a Ford Escort XR3i, and Freddie obtained his beloved Range Rover. All of which were perfect cars for each of them and well… in true Christmas tradition, they were tasked with a road trip home, and some holiday themed tests along the way. Such as a race to see which car could best fit a Christmas tree and which driver could get it wrapped in the least amount of time. Which sorta turned out to be Freddie and his Range Rover. Because he won the time trial but didn’t finish the challenge with a tree, because of Paddy related reasons (he took two). And that was followed by a race to see which car could complete a generic course the quickest, with a caveat of course. Since a friendly game of Passenger Charades slowed that down, but Freddie still won. And there was also a competition designed to express unity, where the lads delivered a beautiful tree and decorated it and had to work together to make that happen, and the challenges and fun didn’t end there. Because eventually, the lads made it home and found that the entire office was kicking off a grand holiday party on the old racetrack. Which led to a fun spirited race in dream cars really. The kind that included K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider, and there was also a delightful Santa race to be had, which served as the final challenge for the original cars that the lads gifted to one another. Wherein they had to pull a sleigh full of presents in their ride and the car that spilled the least number of presents, was the true winner of the holiday season and the best Christmas car ever and that honor went to Freddie’s Range Rover. Since he managed to keep a handful of gifts in his sleigh. But what mattered more here, was that the evening ended with joy and friendship and the realization that this episode really was a flawless Christmas Special. For it offered us gift giving and the joy that comes from that, and the importance of doing good deeds for others and the wonder of just enjoying one another’s company during the season. For people are what make it special and whether you’re celebrating the season from your dinner table, or through a microphone in a car, being alongside your friends and family is what matters most. And really it was just amazing to see a show about cars and our of love of them, figure out how to express that message when it seemed impossible. But that too is part of that Christmas magic, since this is the season where the impossible can become a reality, when you believe enough and surround yourself with the greatest gift of all, the people you love. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 207 of ‘The Mosquito’ Coast’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One of the worst feelings in the world we will ever experience, is helplessness. For we are beings of agency and action, and we are in fact, the masters of our own destiny. So, the thought of not being in control and unable to do anything about our situation is sickening and it is only worse when we actually go through it. Because in that moment, we are lost, confused and unsure of what tomorrow will bring, and all we can do… is simply ride the sorrow we feel and tough it out as best we can. Because we are indeed helpless, and really the only way to maintain hope in that situation, is to keep our eyes peeled for an opportunity to take control. Since that will snap us out of our fog real fast and prompt us to spring into action. If anything, those elements are top of mind today, simply because the Fox family was helpless in the next episode of The Mosquito Coast on Apple TV+. For when we caught up with everyone in this tale, they were simply going through the motions and doing their best to live life in Casa Roja because… there was no agency to be found, they were stuck under the thumb of a landlord and a past that would bring all of them down. In fact, they were so downtrodden that new fights were beginning to break out. Since Dina and her father went after one another in a stunning manner, the kind that made it clear how much bad blood Allie and Margot had created between them and their children and well… even that offered no catharsis since there was no future to be had for anyone at the moment. Just another day, in a broken paradise. Which prompted Allie and Margot to indulge in whatever wild idea or moment came their way. Which for Margot involved spending time with Richard. Since he offered to show her what he was hired to do, and as for Allie… well he was summoned to meet with Guillermo once again for fresh work and well… they both went along with the opportunities presented before them because… what else were they going to do? But going out and about in the world, while boring and asinine at first, did indeed present new opportunities for agency for both parties. Because Margot came to discover, Richard still cared for her and wanted to use this opportunity to rebuild trust and that in turn, allowed for him to spill the beans on the entire plan. Giving her ammunition to give to the United States Government and potentially get her family out of this mess at last. As for Allie, well he came to learn that his boss and landlord, wanted his old software. To perfectly fool the police in this country so that his drugs could flow free and never be stopped or intercepted by law enforcement officials. A move that Allie wasn’t happy to take part in, but did none the less, since to deny Guillermo would bring forth all kinds of trouble. The kind that would see harm come to every member of his family. So, he began to build what Guillermo wanted and he too, found opportunity through mundane measures. For he had to enter a bevy of data about the area and the surrounding landscape and in doing so… may have finally found his dream place… where no one would ever bother or demand anything of him. Courtesy of an old deed to a place known only as, La Costa de los Mosquitos, or as translated… The Mosquito Coast. If anything, this was just… another brilliant episode from an already brilliant series. Since it took the time to inform us quietly that sparks will fly when we don’t have purpose and control and the value of sometimes keeping our heads down when we are helpless. Since doing so gave Margot and Allie some welcome surprises and some direction at last and to top it all off… this is an episode that sets the stage for quite the race. One where Allie and Margot will push to see whose plan toward agency and freedom can come to fruition first, and it will be fascinating to see if Margot can wheel and deal freedom with the government, she turned her back upon or if Allie will be able to actually give his family what he promised them, as we barrel toward the season two finale of this magnificent series. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Six of ‘Echo 3’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
There are moments in life, where darkness and sorrow consumes us and it makes sense as to why. For the world can be a genuinely cruel place. Where we find ourselves, both hurt and stunned and when that happens, no amount of advice or suggestions to keep our heads up can help us. Because at that point, we are hurt, we are damaged and stewing in the darkness and the funk that follows it seems like the only way forward. But of course, we eventually come out of it, seemingly overnight for some, when in reality… it takes a few key steps to finally remove us from that which is holding our soul back. And it just so happens that those steps are top of mind today, simply because they were featured in the next episode of Echo 3 on Apple TV+. For when we catch up with Bambi and Prince in ‘Habeas Thumpus’, both men are at their lowest because of their failure to bring Amber home. Which has driven Bambi to basically drink himself stupid every single day and Prince can only find solace and joy from continuing to indulge in that illicit affair with his coworker. Which was the perfect time to inform us as to how we get out of the darkness and one important step in doing so, is having someone point out where we are and offer exactly what we need in that moment. For Prince, that meant hearing about how he wasn’t fighting tooth and nail for Amber, and that was enough for him to end the affair and go and find his drunken brother-in-law in Venezuela, wherein he did Bambi a solid and pulled him out of his stupor and locked him away in a hotel room so he could sober up at last. Once that was accomplished, both men moved onto the next step… having a plan and a focus toward how to improve their lives. Which in this instance, involved working toward bringing Amber home, the long way round. Because they knew that an all-out assault on the compound would end in disaster for everyone and it might bring Amber great harm as well. So, it was best they used logic and guile to find a way to earn her freedom and that led to quite the complex plan. Wherein Mitch would join them in kidnapping the family member of Tariq Marwan. Who was a high ranking official in the Venezuelan government that more or less was in charge of keeping Amber locked away and he was in charge of keeping the drugs flowing from that facility. Which of course, led to quite the intense chase sequence, wherein our trio of heroes struggled mightily to capture Tariq’s brother, Momo. In part because kidnapping a man, who was also a deejay, in broad daylight was no easy task. But also, because there was some bad blood present here. For Bambi and Prince both harbored shame and blame for losing Amber… and they of course… had their own indiscretions to worry about and that meant if they wanted to finish this mission, they had to hash that out and thankfully they did. Restoring their bond and working relationship and that in turn allowed for them to kidnap Momo after all… and use Mitch to inform Tariq that his brother was in the hands of the Americans and the easiest way to fix that, was to let Amber go home at last. An ending that of course, sets the stage for more magnificent tension and cat and mouse games, since Minister Marwan clearly hates being embarrassed in the slightest. But while we wait to see what comes of this gambit, we can celebrate one smart tale. One that truly hammered home how focus and assistance can snap us out of the darkness and get us moving in the right direction again, since Bambi and Prince are ready to play the hero and risk it all for family and love and well, once again we are left counting down the minutes to next week’s chapter in this incredible story. For not only are Bambi and Prince focused again, but they’re working without a net and ready to cross lines to get what they want and that is going to make for more powerful and meaningful storytelling as the fight for Amber properly gets underway. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 307 of ‘Mythic Quest’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
For the most part, comedy television shows and sitcoms do very little to explore the origins of the characters they introduce to us, and it makes sense as to why. After all, we’re here to live in the moment with these characters, so spending time thinking about their past just seems counterproductive, and if by chance either type of show does explore days gone by for a character… it’s handled in hilarious fashion and relates to an immediate joke or moment. Which audiences are totally fine with since they know what they signed up for, and that’s allowed for this style of storytelling to dominate the comedy landscape for ages on end. But as this era of peak television continues along… there are cracks starting to form in the foundation of the notions, that everything in a comedy show must be funny and that the past is something that is in essence, off limits. Because writers and showrunners, and executive producers, are hearing the feedback from audiences. Who want complete experiences from their favorite shows and stories, and that is pushing these same creatives to try and see what would come out of exploring yesterday and playing some stories straight and that is leading to some brilliant and powerful storytelling, as evidenced by this week’s episode of Mythic Quest. For ‘Sarian’ is a story that spent its entire time in 1987 and 2001, to explore the respective pasts of Ian and Poppy and that particular exploration… led to minimal laughs and heavy emotional moments with these characters. Mainly because we quickly came to learn… they both struggled growing up. Ian for instance, had a hard time learning in the classroom and Poppy really didn’t have much in the way of social skills. Not to mention, they both faced some real hardships in their family life. Since Poppy’s mother and father viewed her as an awkward outcast that might not have a good future socially, which unsettled her greatly and Ian… well we came to learn that his mother suffered from mental illness, likely bipolar disorder, and that put him in a tough spot often where he didn’t know what to do to help her, or how to function when she was in a depressive state, and well… this made for some stunning storytelling. The kind that really was devoid of laughs and instead offered us great insight into how some people don’t grow up in the ‘traditional’ manner that others do, their youth is filled with hardships and pain and a sense of real detachment, the kind that forces them… to find their own path forward to gain meaning and agency in life. Which is of course… precisely what Poppy and Ian did as time marched along. Since Poppy figured out that if she merely acted like an everyday person, she could escape and be herself and find the meaning she needed, and Ian came to learn of the healing power of fantasy worlds and what they can do for his own mental health and the mental health of others. Because one day, Poppy discovered Ian’s first game, a tribute to his mother that reflected her struggles, and that inspired her in a time of need and that would set in motion… a collision course for these two characters. Since Ian would inspire Poppy to meet him and she would in turn inspire him as the years went along, a reality that offered up some brilliant commentary on the world and life and how interconnected we are and how much of an impact storytelling can have upon us. All of which, made for one stunning and moving episode. One that not only changed the game for comedy shows by showing all of us how easy it actually is to explore the past of dynamic characters and still move us and wow us in the process. But this is a story that also connected with so many of us out there. Since we’ve all felt ostracized and different much like Poppy did in her youth and some of us… have dealt with problems similar to Ian’s. Making this a love letter to the folks that don’t ‘fit in’, and that is something that has real power and gravity and goes to show just how intelligent and incredible this series truly is. If anything, this is the show’s most ambitious and best episode to date and that’s saying a lot from a show that wows us on the regular and well, now that we’ve reached the end of this magnificent tale, it will be interesting to see what other surprises and powerful moments await us as season three rolls along. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of ‘Shantaram’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One thing that we can all agree upon, is that the Apple TV+ series, Shantaram, has taught us some fine lessons regarding the nature of change and how difficult it can be to embrace it. Not to mention, it’s shown us how we cannot escape the past no matter how hard we try, nor we can resolve said past through mere good deeds. No, in order to finally find peace and welcome change, we must make the decision to embrace it and confront that which haunts us and well, the series has yet to fully explore… what motivates a person that is desperate to do none of that, to finally open their heart to such matters, and there was good reason to keep that in shadows. Simply so Lin Ford could finally demonstrate how that comes to fruition in the season finale of the show. For ‘All the Way From There Just to Get to Here’ is a story that finally saw Lin Ford embrace change and begin to resolve his past and all it took to get that going, was to put everything he could ever want at risk… via all-out war in Bombay. For Kavita’s article made the front page and once it arrived on newsstands everywhere in the city, Walid and Khader Khan went to war. A battle that was complete with collateral damage since Kavita was forced to watch Nishant die, out of the decision to put his name on the article to try and protect her. Of course, eventually Khader Khan gained the upper hand in this war since he was far better connected and had the smarter henchman. But the fallout of that conflict and the chaos in the streets that followed, alongside discovering what Maurizio had done at Karla’s, seemingly flipped on a light switch for Lin. Because he realized that Maurizio and Madame Zhou could cause Karla great harm or even kill her. Especially since Maurizio was willing to kill Sebastian over money, and almost succeeded in doing so, had it not been for Lin and Abdullah and Prabhu. Which helped Lin to realize, that if he just ran or stayed the angry course, he indulged in, in the prior episode… he could lose the one person that mattered most to him. Which in turn, pushed him and Prabhu into action. Wherein they regrouped with Didier and secured his apartment as a safe house as needed. For on this day, Lin was going to bring Karla home, and he gathered there would undoubtedly be wounds and wanted criminals to come forth from that rescue mission and well… he was right. Because his arrival at the brothel was tense and terrifying, in large part because the citizens of Bombay were ready to storm Zhou’s beloved business, but also because… Maurizio was ready to inflict great harm to get his money. And that led to one intense battle, where Karla and Lisa jumped into the fray after escaping their basement prison on their own. Which led to a grand moment for Lisa, where she plugged a bullet into Maurizio to make him finally pay for his transgressions and in the midst of that firefight and through the angry mob that breached the gates… everyone was able to escape.
That brought them back to Didier’s for a moment to breathe and appreciate their safety, and once everyone came to realize how lucky they were on this day, they all parted ways to prepare for what was to come next. For Lisa that involved finding her love, who left the hospital post haste. For Prabhu that meant greeting his bride to be with the great news that he was getting a cut of that bag of money and for Karla and Lin… that finally meant being together and expressing their love and it also meant… the time had come for Lin to realize, he had finally embraced change. Because for the first time in his life, he was no longer focused on himself or his own agency and anger. He was selfless and giving and that provided him with the peace, he’s craved and the happiness he’s always wanted, and once he began to understand the power of change, the time came to face his past, in a harrowing manner, no less.
Because despite finally connecting with Karla and making plans to escape Bombay post haste, with her, to keep Nightingale at bay, things went south quickly. For Kavita turned Lin into the police in the midst of her grief and that brought Nightingale and Lin face to face after all this time, despite Lisa’s efforts to stave off that encounter, and that brought forth a positive moment for certain. Since Lin stood tall in the face of his enemy and didn’t let fear or guilt take control. Because in that moment, he reconciled the past and looked toward a future with Karla. Which unfortunately did not come to fruition. For Karla’s rescue of Lin’s passport and her actions in the name of Lin, was more than Khader Khan could bear. Since he saw Lin’s love for her as the cause of all of his problems and that led to a disturbing ending where Lin was kidnapped and badly beaten and tortured by the police once again, but this time around… what Lin learned in this tale seemed to help him greatly in those closing dark moments. For he had something to focus upon now, a future with the woman that sent his heart soaring, and there were no regrets in his heart and little fear as well. Because at long last, Lin Ford understood the lessons the universe was working to teach him and that will give him strength as we all wait for the next chapter in this story to get underway. But while we wait to hear good news from Apple TV+ regarding a season two order, which has not been announced as of press time, we can celebrate one powerful and magnificent tale. One that really allowed for everyone in this story to grow in some capacity and brought this wonderful journey of self-discovery home and truly… we hope that season two will indeed come to fruition. Simply because by no means is this story complete and it genuinely deserves a chance to come to a proper close, so we can learn what becomes of the magnificent people that Lin bonded with over the course of this season and to see the man he becomes… now that he has finally embraced the power and the wonder of change. Written by John Edward Betancourt What’s fascinating about this modern era of television, is that there is now quantifiable data that can help us to understand what separates a standard show, from an iconic show. Such as having a loyal audience that ravenously pours over episodes old and new, and of course… it must be well received by critics, and it absolutely needs to be nominated for and win awards. Plus, generating a spin-off or prequel or sequel also helps a show to achieve that status since it speaks to how the story is growing beyond the source material. If anything, that criteria is top of mind today, simply because… today is the day that we can finally classify the Apple TV+ series, Mythic Quest, as iconic. For earlier today, this series… one that boasts a large and loyal fandom and is beloved by critics everywhere and has been nominated for countless awards… and enjoyed a win along the way, is expanding into a universe. For Apple TV+ announced that a new series set in this world will be coming to the network, one that celebrates video games in a unique new light and explores their impact on our lives. Because when he’s not creating entire universes of storytelling, such as the wildly popular Power Universe or bringing to life hit television shows on ABC, such as For Life, he is simply working on his next project. One that will push boundaries and tell unique stories and it just so happens that he is in the midst of creating a story in that vein right now. For earlier today, STARZ let it be known that they are working with 50 Cent once again to develop the scripted drama, Fightland. Which is set in Britain and revolves around high-stakes boxing in that part of the world and as is often the case with 50 Cent related productions, it will feature dynamic and rich characters and a world that will fascinate us and for proof… then look no further than the fascinating details regarding this partnership that STARZ was kind enough to provide us with. 'STARZ announced today it is in development on “Fightland” executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (“Power” Universe, “For Life”). The scripted drama series is set within the high stakes, cash rich, dangerous world of British boxing. Acclaimed writing team Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith (“Save Me,” “Run”) have signed on for the project that follows a retired disgraced world champion fighter drawn into the corrupt underbelly of the sport after the disappearance of his childhood best friend and training partner. To save his friend, the troubled fighter will have to return to a way of life that nearly destroyed him – one that cost him everything to leave behind. “‘Fightland’ embodies the stakes, swagger and ambition that collaborations between STARZ and 50 Cent have come to represent,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at STARZ. “We are excited to be working with Daniel and Marlon who are brilliant writers and whose authentic take will bring this global story to life.” Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will executive produce through his G-Unit Film & Television along with Francis Hopkinson (“Wallander,” “Bancroft”) and Katharine Leadbetter (“Woman in White,” “Catherine the Great”) of Expanded Media who will also produce “Fightland” for STARZ. Vice President, Original Programming Sebastian Arboleda and Director, Original Programming, Alex Alberts will both oversee the series on behalf of STARZ. About Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has carved out a thriving television and film career as both a best-in-class producer and star. In 2005, he founded G-Unit Film & Television, Inc. which has produced a wide variety of content across numerous platforms and sold a myriad of shows to various networks. Among these is the critically acclaimed #1 show on STARZ, “Power,” in which he not only co-starred in but also served as executive producer and director. In October 2018, Jackson and STARZ/Lionsgate closed an unprecedented deal for Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television, Inc. The partnership, touted as among the most significant deals to date for an Executive Producer in premium television has successfully focused on expansion of the “Power” universe with spin-offs ‘’Power Book II: Ghost,’’ “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” and “Power Book IV: Force.” G-Unit Film & Television also produced the ABC hit, “For Life” and recently wrapped production on season two of the hit series, “Black Mafia Family” for STARZ and is set to release the “Black Mafia Family” Docuseries. G-Unit is also in development on the scripted series “Queen Nzinga” at STARZ. Recently released from G-Unit Film & Television is “Hip Hop Homicides” at WeTV. Jackson is also expanding into the podcast space through his new G-Unit Audio banner with the debut of Surviving El Chapo: The Twins Who Brought Down a Drug Lord in partnership with iHeart Media and Lionsgate Sound. The company is also building out its feature slate, starting with a three picture Horror deal as a collaboration with Horror phenom Eli Roth and 3BlackDot. Jackson is repped by APA and attorney Stephen Savva. About Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith are two writers who grew up together in South London. Their debut was the critically acclaimed Channel 4 drama series RUN, starring Olivia Coleman and Lennie James. They went on to win the RTS Award for Best Drama Writer and the BAFTA Television Craft Award for Breakthrough Talent. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 206 of ‘Gangs of London’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
At some point or another in our lives, we will make a deal or an association with someone that we know to be trouble. But without their help or their guidance, something we desperately need to obtain, will elude us. So, we swallow our pride and cut that deal and do our best to ensure that we are not in their debt one the deal is done. Because we know the kind of trouble that will follow being in their pocket, and we are successful in avoiding that. For the everyday world affords us easy exits and rules that help get us out of that kind of trouble quickly. But in a world where they are no rules, such as the criminal underworld, such a decision could prove to be costly in just about every single way imaginable. As evidenced by this week’s stunning episode of Gangs of London on AMC+. For this is a story that saw Sean Wallace deal with the harsh truth that a deal with Koba was indeed akin to a deal with the devil. Because despite putting the Investors on the run with targeted strikes, thus delivering the Koba-Wallace Alliance, London on a silver platter… the pieces had to be to put back together. Which meant new deals and new alliances had to be forged and this new leadership group needed Asif to keep the drugs flowing. Something that Asif was hesitant to take part in since he really didn’t trust either Sean or Koba, but Koba opted to offer a sweetener to the deal to seal it. In that, he would hand over Lale so that Asif could finally enact revenge for her role in putting down his son and that led… to the lesson in question and some harrowing moments. Because Sean was faced with a horrifying decision. Wherein he could save his love and create a new rift or leave her to die and maintain power and that was the dark reality of the deal he made and there was no one coming to rescue him or stop this, and to hammer home the ugliness of the deal he made… we were privy to every dark moment that Lale suffered through in Asif’s House of Horrors. Because she was forced to fight back with no weapons in hand and no understanding of her environment. Which did lead to some harrowing moments as she took her lumps and functioned in fear, but it also led to some epic moments. The kind that truly helped those souls to learn, you don’t mess with Lale. Because she’ll take something as innocuous as plastic wrap and turn it into a deadly weapon. But while it was amazing to see Lale put down Asif’s elite security force, and inflict some solid wounds on Asif, before escaping… Sean did still have to make that difficult decision and make it he did. For in the closing moments of this tale, he opted to hand Lale over to Asif, potentially sealing her fate and informing us so much about this world and these characters. In that, without rules and without structure, this world is cruel and will motivate others to do their worst in the name of power and agency and that deals with the devil, lead to hell for everyone involved. Because when someone as twisted as Koba is free to operate with impunity, they are happy to do so, and now Sean will pay a price for his decision… one that clearly will impact his soul and his mental health, regardless of his rationalizations. But thankfully, this darkness may not last forever. After all, Ed and Marian had some off the record discussions about joining forces and stopping this before it gets out of hand and of course, Elliot isn’t done with Sean or Koba in the slightest. Because after grieving and exacting his revenge, he came to learn who really killed his father and that’s bad news for those gentlemen. But while we wait to see what these new alliances bring forth, we can celebrate, one of the most devastating and most powerful episodes of this series to date. Because some wild decisions were made here, and we’ve never seen Lale or anyone else quite be put through the wringer like she was here. And a round of applause is in order for Narges Rashidi, who plays Lale, for her stunning work here. For not only was she pushed to her limit by doing her own stunts here, but she put on an acting masterclass and sold the gravity of the moment and Lale’s frustration and fear in a manner that was palpable and heartbreaking, and hopefully, Lale finds a way out of this one. Because she deserves a better ending and a chance to take part in what Elliot, and Marian and Ed are planning… which is to make Sean Wallace and Koba pay dearly for their wanton cruelty. Until next time. |
