There are certain rules that crime shows follow when it comes to the pursuit of the villain or a vigilante. In that, the chase will take some time to build tension in the story, and we will only learn tidbits about that person’s life and motivations. To provide us with mystique and intrigue, and to keep us engaged, wherein we will be rewarded with grand reveals and a grand showdown in the finale, wrapping up the chase in an epic manner that satisfies. Which is a formula that has withstood the test of time, because it is impactful and enjoyable, and it is so engrained in storytelling, that we are genuinely shocked when a series changes course on such matters.

Which is why this week’s episode of You Would Do It Too (Tú También lo Harías), is of note. Because it was indeed that shocking episode that bucked every bit of convention. A feat that it accomplished by properly introducing us to Dante, the vigilante, who was nicknamed ‘The Justice’ in this tale, and well… we now fully understand why he ran from the cops. Simply because Dante, was a former felon. One who was convicted of helping his critically ill sister, die, to commit insurance fraud. Which Dante claimed was not the case… but he went to jail regardless and spent a great deal of time on the lamb upon reaching parole.

Simply because, he maintained his innocence, and there were now others curious about whether or not he was. Since Leyre, the intrepid reporter in this town, was all over the case and all over his identity to break the exclusive story of The Justice. Courtesy of a leak within the department. In fact, she was the one who revealed most of his backstory to us and that truly was unconventional. Since it further drags Dante and the story into the grey areas of life we don’t think about enough, and it paints him as much of a victim as anyone else here. Since there is also a chance that his case was outright manipulated in the name of the almighty dollar. But what mattered most here, was that the story had us get to know him early for a change… and it still had more surprise to send our way.

After all, there was mention of how the chase usually lasts for the entire season, but it would seem it is coming to an end here. Because despite being able to evade detection, for the most part, to the point where the cops couldn’t even catch him at his home, Dante seemed to decide, that now was the time to just expose his location and potentially be caught. All by leaving his phone on and finding a stopping point outside of the city, and that too is huge. Because you don’t see it happen this early in the story or in such a smooth fashion. But this series wants to buck convention and surprise us at every turn and it is doing that wonderfully and going this route, also manages to engage us, since we now have some questions.

Because… if The Justice is ready to be caught and own up to his crime, what then lie ahead? Because more often than not, wrapping up a major plot thread quickly, denotes that something bigger is on the horizon. Something massive and shocking, and that would be in line with this series. Because it’s been about the big moments. But while we wait to see, we can celebrate another stunning tale. One that answered a lot of questions and properly fleshed out someone that was pure mystery a short while ago, and despite that reveal, we are indeed compelled to continue the journey and see where it takes us. Because we still have big questions that need to be answered, and it will be interesting to see what other surprises await us as this mystery continues to unfold. Until next time.

If there is one thing we fear when we are in the midst of trying to heal… it is honesty. Because when we are healing, we make a bevy of mistakes and we do dumb things, and we know they are unhealthy and stupid. But we do them because in that moment we truly believe we need to feel something. Feel whatever it is that silly act is going to supply us with, and we simply don’t want to hear from people that we love and mean the world to us… that we are THAT person in that moment. Or we do those things to punish ourselves because we think we deserve sorrow, and we don’t want to hear we are worthy of something good and pure. But one way or another, that honesty will arrive, especially if we have a good support network and what we learn from that honesty… can be beautiful.

If anything, this part of the healing process is top of mind today, simply because it was put on display in the next episode of Shrinking on Apple TV+. For ‘Honesty Era’ saw several characters receive that raw honesty for the silly stuff they were doing, or to make peace. Gaby for instance, kept avoiding her sister and all the needs of her family to just live her life, her way, and sister called her out for that, and later so did Jimmy. But she needed to hear that, because she was in an avoidance phase, one designed to just not let her feel anything. But life goes on and people need us, and sometimes we need to be reminded of the fact that we cannot shirk our responsibilities and commitments, nor can we avoid our feelings, and hearing that honesty, helped her plenty here, and showcased how it can refocus and improve us.

Paul’s journey, however, was a story that explored how we hide from honesty to punish ourselves. Because his ex-wife, Susan, was in town to hear Meg speak… and she was being kind and being nice to him. Which freaked him out, for reasons that Brian had to work to get out of him. Which as it turned out, related to the fact that Paul screwed up. He cheated on Susan; he made his career the real priority and he felt guilty. He felt as though he needed to be punished for blowing up his family and not talking to her, and not talking to her, and facing his mistakes were somehow a better, act of contrition than talking to her about how he screwed up, and why she was being so kind. But thankfully an honest talk revealed that she was back to make peace with him, to close things out before his illness robbed him of everything. Giving rise to the reality that we are worthy of forgiveness and freedom from our sins when we’ve atoned, and we don’t need to punish ourselves for all time.  

All of which gave rise to some beautiful storytelling for certain. The kind that showcased positive ends to honesty. But since this series shows us everything about the process, it looked at the bad as well. Since it did let us know what happens when we keep pushing away honesty when we actually need it. Which is what Sean did here. Because he wanted to have an honest talk with his dad, and really break down those walls. He wanted to find that peace and was denied it by his father’s old school mentality of feelings are for fools and because of that, and because of the rough and tumble things he said to Sean, Sean felt he deserved his own punishment. He deserved to suffer for trying to let go of his pain and heal in a healthy manner, because sometimes… we do that when things don’t go our way, and hopefully he will be okay after what he imparted upon himself.

Which was, a bittersweet ending to the story for certain, but we take the good with the bad in this life, and sometimes we have to accept that honesty also gets us nowhere. Since Liz’s frustrations were out into the void here, and well, that made for a powerful episode for certain. One that once more, honestly exposed the sour things we do when we heal and how hard it is to get to the right spot to heal. Because healing is stunningly difficult work and this show deserves applause for pointing that out and for showcasing the ups and the downs that accompany it, so that everyone understands we will stumble, we will fall, as we work toward the peace we so desperately seek in our souls, and it will be interesting to see what other powerhouse lessons await us as season two of this brilliant show continues along. One unfortunate truth about stories that involve the pursuit of our dreams… is that they end abruptly when the dream is achieved, and what makes that unfortunate… is that it is such a silly way to end a story. Because really, that’s it? The character finally has their dream and there’s nothing more than joy and wonder? What about a sense of accomplishment? Not to mention… what comes after we achieve our dreams? Do we just float away into a new plane of existence? Granted yes, there’s a lot of sarcasm and hyperbole in this writer’s words regarding that. But such fluff adds to the mystique the dream and the belief that it immediately fixes all of our problems, when there is so much more we could and should be discussing when it comes to our dreams and what happens after we achieve them.

Such as the fact, that life goes on after we get there. We still will have interpersonal issues to deal with, and we will still deal with heavy moments that will require some healing. Not to mention we have to maintain the dream and work harder to keep those who want to take it from us at bay and that is why season two of Heels is so important. Because it looked at the after, and what really happens when we achieve our dream, and the season two premiere of the show wasted little time in doing so. Since ‘Ten-Bell Salute’ first informed us that there is immediate fallout for when we do things we shouldn’t, to achieve our dreams, such as hurt others. Since we watched Ace Spade head out into the night to heaven knows where because he was so deeply wounded by what his brother did to him.

But there are good moments that come out of reaching the top. Such as that grand celebration that needs to take place, where we bask in the joy and wonder of achieving everything we’ve ever wanted. Which we saw on display here from so many in the DWL. Since Wild Bill was full of compliments and hope, and Crystal… basked in the glory of being a champion. Not to mention… even one’s enemies and those who want to see one fail have to deal with the reality of success. Since Gully did understand he was bested here, and yes, while he immediately tried to bring Jack and his team down… he still knew full well that his rival was in a better place from a popularity standpoint.

However, what truly made this premiere worthwhile, was the fact that it explored something that we don’t talk about at all when people get to the top. In that, they tend to reflect on the journey, and what brought them success, and they should. Because so much work went into reaching the peak of the mountain, and so much sacrifice. So yes, one should absolutely appreciate the journey and think about how great it feels to go from thinking about that big moment, to living within the moment, and that brought about, the origins of the crowning moment for the DWL. How it was born out of sorrow, and worry. Since King Spade’s untimely passing prompted everyone to think about what lie ahead and what they could leave behind by disbanding the league.

Which in turn led to one last hurrah to really pay it and the King proper tribute and that… that brought about a critical moment for Jack. Where he decided, after basking in the love of the crowd, now was the time to take over the league, and nurture it and do it right… and grow this thing into what it could be, and all it took to start that journey was a ‘to hell with it’ decision. Where he just thought it should happen, and that is worth reflecting upon. Because such thinking really makes one appreciate how far a singular decision can take a person and what joy the journey will bring them in the end. Which made for a very realistic end to this particular chapter of the story, one that was simply magnificent through and through.

For once again, this series did something that few others do and showcased what comes next when we achieve our dreams. For we finally came to learn that it is after the big moment arrives, we think about the journey and celebrate everything we’ve worked for and clearly… we prepare for the days ahead. Because a new chapter awaits us, and it is wonderful that this episode informs us that season two will look at what we find in that new chapter. So that we understand the journey through and through. But all lessons aside, this was just a great episode, period, and such a delight to watch again. Since you notice more details the second time around and more context comes into play and that is what we have to look forward to the most in the season two portion of the rewatch… depth. Depth for a story that is about as real and emotional as they come. Until next time.

It is definitely safe to say that criminal investigations are showcased in a supremely slick and positive light in the world of television and understandably so. After all, this is a chance for creatives to find the good in law enforcement, and a chance to give an audience something they adore. Specifically, stories about good taking on evil and defeating it, so why not show us officers of the law that work well together and a process that is just and true. But the fact of the matter is, that is supremely escapist in nature. Because sometimes… things don’t go that smooth in the world of criminal investigations. In fact, sometimes they are downright messy.

Because what we often forget, is the human factor in such matters, and humans make mistakes and humans miss things for so many reasons, and that can outright spoil justice. Since it can lead to internal chaos in a police department, and excessive pressure to get the job done and that can allow for a criminal to escape. Which is important to note and important to showcase, so people can offer a little grace, and understand what really goes on during an investigation and the importance of objectivity in the matter. Since that is what really solves cases, the facts, and well, that messier side of policework and the need for objectivity are top of mind today, simply because they serve as the focus of a new series on Acorn TV entitled, Inspector Ellis.

A feat that ‘Hanmore’ accomplishes by introducing us to DCI Ellis, a brilliant investigator that has seen her own share of ups and downs on the police force… but has become invaluable to the service. For she is that objective mind, one that sees all and can easily piece together the clues… once she gets past the toughest part of her job. For her task is to step into departments that are struggling to close cases, for whatever reason, and stop the chaos to get the department on track so the case in question can finally be solved and justice can be served and well, she faces quite the challenge in making that happen in this premiere. For not only is her arrival in Hanmore met with hostility and disdain, since they think they have it in hand, but new challenges quickly arise.

Since there are citizens in town that have secrets, they want kept, and others who refuse to work with the police on a case that one would think would be priority. Since a teenage girl has gone missing and a teenage boy has turned up dead. Which brings about… a long and winding and engaging case where we watch Ellis weather every storm and push beyond the noise and the lack of cooperation to solve this case. Which gives rise, to a vastly different type of crime drama premiere. For this is one that frustrates and aggravates. Simply because it strips down what the genre stands for and replaces it, with realism. Where fear, ego, and all the things that should not overshadow a case, do, including its disgusting outcome and that’s brilliant.

Since it showcases that sometimes the real crime committed, are the things we let get in the way of justice, and how perhaps we should demand better of our agencies to remain objective and on course a la Ellis herself. All of which results in a refreshing story, one that is unconventional and powerful, and deeply engaging. Since you root from the get-go for Ellis to get hold of this messy situation and save the day, and truly, one cannot go wrong with a show that takes the crime drama in a direction this bold and this visceral. And it will be interesting to see what other unique quirks and problems that people create through ego, will be introduced and explored, as season one of this dynamic show continues along. For decades on end now, crime stories on television have followed a specific structure in how they present their world to an audience. In that, they must be gritty, to really showcase the gravity of crime and its impact upon people. Plus, they have to be intense in nature and feature incredible investigators that process the case and the evidence in a manner as fast as the story itself, and well, there’s nothing wrong with this. Because it has given rise to some powerhouse storytelling over the years, the kind that really does showcase a world we know little of and how ugly it can be because of the dark choices that people make.

If anything, the only issue that one can take up with such stories, is that… there are simply too many of them on the networks. Because truly, everywhere you turn it’s the next great slick crime drama debuting and well… audiences love a little variety. That’s why it should come as no surprise that we are in the midst of a diversification of the genre. Wherein creatives are working to bring forth cozy mysteries that intrigue but are never overwhelming. Or we are seeing shows that harken back to a different age of crime dramas, where the investigator is a touch quirkier in nature to shake things up. Or… we are simply seeing revolutionary crime dramas through and through. Ones that accomplish wonders through new ideas and bold choices, such as Inspector Ellis on Acorn TV.

For this particular series, really is a refreshing crime drama that accomplishes so much. Courtesy of a simple yet impactful premise. Wherein we meet Inspector Ellis. An officer of the law that has seen some things in the course of her career, and is brilliant as well, and serves the police in a manner that isn’t traditional. For Ellis is the go-to investigator when cases are moving along slowly or seemingly cannot be solved. For she has that unique vision and understanding of murder and that leads her on some fascinating adventures that ponder upon some dark corners of the human condition. The kind others would shy away from, but Ellis will not. For she knows she is that last line of defense for justice, and well… that really does give rise to a vastly different type of show in this vein.

Because Ellis isn’t grizzled or some kind of bitter wunderkind. She’s a well-rounded person, with a keen intellect and magnificent observation skills, and she harbors no nonsense regarding her cases. She only wants justice, and she isn’t tied to a specific community… which only adds to the purity of her quest for justice. Making her a gumshoe unlike any other we’ve seen in this genre, and that alone is worth the price of admission… but the show continues to impress beyond that. Since the cases are engaging and powerful, and truly ponder upon the darkness we harbor and what brings it into the light. All of which makes for a captivating watch, one that truly satisfies courtesy of some amazing writing and some amazing performances, with Sharon D Clarke leading the way as Inspector Ellis.

Since she brings incredible gravitas to the role and plays Ellis with an honesty that you rarely find in crime dramas. Which only adds to the majesty of this incredible series, one that also… is progressive in nature. Because make no mistake about it, it’s a huge deal that this series features a Black female lead. For that is rare in this genre and rare in television in general, but we have that here and that’s wondrous. Since it is indeed representation at its finest, and the good news is that you can begin the journey with Inspector Ellis right now. For the first episode is available on Acorn TV, and we cannot wait for you to see it, to geek out with you about it, and to share our interview with Sharon D Clarke, to celebrate the release of this important new series.

We like to believe that the day we are going to stand up for ourselves, will be a proud day. One where we showcase our agency, our power, so that the person that wronged us understands, they messed with the wrong individual, and well… there’s merit to that belief. Because standing up for ourselves can accomplish that, but it doesn’t always give us pride and make us feel empowered. Especially when we stand up for ourselves regarding a toxic relationship. For standing tall there, exposes a lot of hard truths and involves a bevy of tough emotions, and that tough aspect to claiming agency is top of mind today, because it was put on display in the next episode of Three Women on STARZ.

For ‘twilight’ was all about Maggie, and her day in court. Because the trial against her predator of a teacher was underway and she thought… there would be pride. But instead, it was a harrowing experience that forced her to think even more upon the past. About how her teacher manipulated her often when they were ‘seeing’ each other and kept control over her through sweet nothings and sexual pleasure. And having to face that again, was difficult to say the least. Because hindsight helped her to see what he did to her emotionally, and the pain he imparted upon her because of that, and of what she lost by giving into his claims that he loved her and wanted her.

Because it forced her to keep secrets from her family, her friends, her closest ones even. All to keep the fantasy alive and keep this controlling creep happy and that cost her friendships when the truth came out, and of course… there was nothing left for her when he broke everything off. All of which explored, how standing tall against a toxic ex… makes us feel small. Makes us feel as though we were nothing but a fool, who followed our heart and our loins over logic, and that does elicit shame and fury. Fury over why we couldn’t see the warning signs sooner, or why we let ourselves fall for such nonsense. But that’s what toxic relationships do. They scramble us, and cost us so much, and the impact of that extended beyond reflection.

For she was trying her best to be herself in this story and find joy and be strong. But it wasn’t easy. In fact, at times she was just listless and lost and rightfully so. Because this was a lot to process, and a lot for her family to process as well. For they had some hard truths in front of them, and of course, learning about pain for one’s child… wounds deeply. Makes one believe that they are a bad parent or a failure because they couldn’t protect them from the chaos of the world. Which put Maggie’s dad in a dark, dark place. One from which there was no return and that brought fresh pain in the household and for Maggie… a greater sense of loss. In the direct sense since her father took his own life, but in the indirect sense as well.

Such as a loss of innocence, a loss of youth and a loss of power and agency. All because one man did his best to act out a fantasy and dragged her emotionally to have it, and that made for a powerful tale. One that spoke to the power of toxic relationships, and the fact that standing up for oneself doesn’t always end triumphantly. It can open cans of rotten worms and test one like never before, but we do come out of the other side for the better. It just takes time, and healing, as so many things in this life do, and this episode deserves a round of applause for pointing all of this out and for once again showcasing how much harder this process is for women. Since we don’t believe victims, we grill them… and that outright has to stop. Until next time.

One particularly dark truth that we don’t like to admit to all that often… is that we are sometimes inspired to excel in life, through spite. And we hate admitting to that, because that feels quite toxic in nature. For we are taught that we are to find inspiration in positive elements and people that we admire. So, we can become the best version of ourselves possible. But along the way, we learn, that revenge is sometimes a dish that is best served cold, and there is nothing colder than taking the disdain we have for someone and using that as motivation to become more, and well… that does make us feel a little dirty. 

But it shouldn’t, how we find inspiration is how we find inspiration, and if proving someone wrong is the way to do that, so be it. All that matters is that it pushes us, and we leave toxic behaviors out of it. Because that is when this becomes something ugly, something terrifying, and well… that is likely why the next episode of Sweetpea on STARZ explored what it looks like when we try to get ahead through the harm of others. So, it can serve as a cautionary tale. Which ‘Everybody Loves Julia’ accomplished by informing us… that Rhiannon didn’t kill her nemesis. No instead, she wanted to enjoy the kill and break Julia before doing her in and well… that proved to be difficult. Because she clapped back and knew what buttons to push, and that in turn, pushed Rhiannon to new heights for all the wrong reasons.

Which was why she demanded she get to write the story about Julia missing. In part, to be the one to break bad news about the person she hated to the world but to also… find dirt to break her with. But alas, that too was a tough task. Because her friends said nothing but nice things, and even her beloved spoke to some measure of wonder in their relationship. Making it seem as though, other avenues would need to happen to bring Julia to her lowest. But that didn’t stop Rhiannon from finding joy in being spiteful in this manner. Since she found a real thrill in pubslishing her first story and in exerting power over Craig. For she felt as though she was in charge of her destiny at last. In fact, she even stood up to her sister, and well… if she didn’t have Julia tied up in the garage of her home, this might have been inspiring.

But it really did showcase how we can be at our worst when we use that motivation to hurt over heal and going this route only made Rhiannon a tragically dark character that found herself in an odd place when she finally got the dirt she wanted. In that, Julia’s relationship was not a wondrous and magical coupling. It was ugly, and she was trapped and that put some humility into Rhiannon’s soul and helped her to realize, that she was doing the wrong things, and this was more about her demons and her skeletons over anything else. But alas, there may not be much time for her to really ponder upon that. Since the article coming out, combined with Marina’s fine work on the case, has put this mess at a crossroads. Because the police might be onto Rhiannon now, and that will up the pressure like never before.

But while we wait to see what lie ahead regarding that, we can celebrate one twisted cautionary tale. For this one really did inform us to, yes, use a little fire to push us to the top, but never let it consume us. Or we become what we saw here, a vengeful and angry person that will stop at nothing to inflict pain over celebrating the wins. Because Rhiannon’s bloodlust and need for revenge truly clouded her vision to the fact that she was a reporter now, and that men were interested in her and her sister was listening to her. All of which she’s wanted for some time. Which only adds to the tragedy, one that is barreling toward a powerful conclusion. Because it really is only a matter of time before the police connect the dots, and that compels us to continue the journey. To see if any measure of redemption can be found for Rhiannon… or if she is truly lost. Until next time.

There was a time in television history, where what lie ahead for our favorite fictional characters, resided within our imagination once a series we adored came to a close. For the series finale of a show was indeed the end all, be all, farewell to the series, and that world would never be visited ever again. Which was tough to swallow. Because sometimes, a show ended without proper resolution, and we wanted there to be a complete ending to the story, or a character’s journey simply wasn’t wrapped up for a host of reasons. But alas, all one could do was deal with the reality; that was that. But thankfully… that all changed with the explosion of peak television.

Because supply and demand came into play and creatives saw an opportunity to return to classic stories and expand upon them and explore what some of the characters might be up to years later, much to everyone’s joy. For at last, it was happening, and we were getting more, and it just so happens… that Disney+, and the Disney Channel are home to a follow-up to a beloved series that we absolutely wanted more of in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Which returns us to this magical world in a manner that is both satisfying and stunning, in all the right ways. Courtesy in large part to its unique plot. One that steps into present day to help us to catch up with Justin Russo after all these years. 

Wherein we learn that Justin has left magic behind, mostly, and has opted to live a normal life with his beloved wife Giada, and his sons, Roman and Milo, and well… it would seem that all is well for Justin, and he is truly is in a happy place, free from magic. But the arrival of a magical outcast named Billie by way of a blast from Justin’s past… pulls him back into the world of magic. For poor Billie is a wizard that so many believe is a lost cause and will never amount to anything in the Wizard World. But Justin believes otherwise and believes he can bring out the best in her, and that brings about a new chapter for this story… one that is genuinely magical in every sense of the word.

In large part because… it recaptures the overall vibe of the original show. So that sense of fun, and awe and wonder are present here, and that’s huge. Because it does make this a natural extension of the original show, one that takes the time to explore new territory for the franchise, by way of some seriously impressive themes. Since this story is grounded deeply in wonderful themes regarding the power of family, the importance of communication and the nature of the second chance. Giving real depth to this series and investing us deeply in the journey, and well… it makes sense as to why this series is such a wonderful blend of adult themes and the impish joy of our youth.

For David Henrie, who portrayed Justin in the original series, is back to play the adult version of him and he serves as an executive producer on the show and knows full well the importance of staying true to what came before while shepherding the series into a new era and a new chapter. In fact, here is what David said to NTG in a recent press conference, regarding that storytelling mission.

David Henrie: It- it- meaningful is the word. Um, and it’s such a treat to get to watch, like, I see myself in a lot of these kids—to get to watch them go through what I went through- before the show comes out, I’m like “You guys have no idea what’s about to happen.” It’s just- it’s fun to- it’s fun to watch them, um, uh, get ready for this moment. But, um, you know, for me particularly, I take very seriously kind of my- my dual role as I see it in my head to be a shepherd of, um, the spirit of the original show, but also the- the culture on set and the atmosphere I seek to create. I’ve been doing this for 26 years now. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of, um, of this business, and I really seek to bring forward all the best experiences that I’ve- that I’ve had to try to create the most positive, um, culture on set that allows for everyone’s success.
 
And- and, you know, by the grace of God, it’s been going really well. I’ve seen all of these young actors continue to mature and take ownership over their characters. They- the talent level was already very high coming in. But now I’m really seeing everyone settle into their characters and make it their own, and that has been just such a joy to get to witness now from a different position kind of as a producer, ’cause I remember doing it as a kid as one thing—you’re kind of just in it and you’re doing it and you don’t- you’re so focused on what you’re doing that you don’t- you don’t see the growth yourself.
