One particular aspect of life that we prefer to avoid at every turn, is failure. Simply because failure leaves an awful taste in one’s mouth, and it really is seen in quite the negative light in modern society. As though going that route makes one less than who they are, and that failure will somehow set one back in life. But that is simply silly thinking when it comes to failure. For it something that is quite important to our growth. Because failure teaches us a great deal about who we are, what we really want out of life, and who we need to keep within it. Plus, it really does help us to grow accordingly, so we should in fact… embrace it, regardless of how it makes us feel. If anything, failure, and the healthy nature of it, is top of mind today… simply because it was featured in the next two episodes of Time Bandits. Which gave the bandits a chance to grow and begin to embrace a better way and they experienced failure… in all kinds of unique ways. First, by missing out on something simple, food. For they were stuck for quite some time without it in ‘Georgian’, and that informed them of how little they did from a survival standpoint and once they did eat with gusto, they found themselves facing off against unexpected Georgian foes, such as the Earl of Sandwich. Who they managed to escape in a wild manner, but truly… this was a grand failure. For they failed to secure the basics and failed to have a general plan and that led to more failure and chaos. Because on their way to their next destination in ‘Mansa Musa’, they outright lost Judy because they entered a portal they likely should not have. Which left them in an emotionally compromised state and forced so many to handle truths they didn’t want to face about themselves. Such as how they hadn’t dedicated themselves to the journey, and the finer details of time travel, and how they might not be the best thieves possible. Since Mansa Musa and his guards knew what the bandits were up to. Plus, they learned they hadn’t really embraced one another as a team yet, not properly that is, until they nearly lost Kevin as Mansa’s advisor upon future matters. But all of those mistakes, all of those failures, did them well. Because it taught them, they had to be better, and cherish each other, and those lessons stuck. Since everyone walked out of this experience, transformed and eager to be more and that’s a wonderful thing. Because there is a lot of darkness working around them. After all, Pure Evil’s scary, yet delightfully British assassin, Fianna, was hot on their trail and continued to the close the gap in her efforts to capture them. In fact, had it not been for that sweet dog, they might have been in her clutches. Plus, the Supreme Being has Judy, and no good can come of that, since He is clearly laser focused on bringing Earth 2.0 to life. All of which means that time and space needs some outright heroes at the moment. People that can accomplish wonders and save lives untold and it would really seem, that the Time Bandits are about to fall into that role. Courtesy of these episodes. But while we wait to see what lie ahead for them and what comes from the surprises sent our way here, we can celebrate two dynamic and delightful episodes. The kind that once again, made with the funny. Because all of the twists and turns regarding the Earl of Sandwich and his love of pineapples was simply amazing. Plus, the gags in Mansa Musa’s time also worked, especially the ones regarding how the rest of the world was viewed in that era. Plus, we learned again. Since this writer knew nothing of Mansa in the slightest but does now and may look into more about his life. Because that’s what this show does. But above all, it really does appear as though the hero’s journey has begun, and it will be interesting to see how the Time Bandits continue to grow as this journey continues to unfold. Until next time. Watch ‘Time Bandits’

One unfortunate belief that people hold to in this life, is that being a bully is the best way to keep others on the rise from finding any measure of success, and sadly… there’s good reason as to why people hold to that. After all, time and time again, some good old fashioned, aggressive bullying has proven to do just that. Since a boisterous man, and let’s be honest… it’s always a man… does indeed put fear into someone’s heart and gets them to sit down when they stand and well, that’s just stupid and silly. Because everyone deserves a chance to grow and showcase their abilities. But the good news, is that bullying only goes so far and eventually, those on the rise get their due. It merely takes some time and well, that process got underway in the next episode of Women in Blue (Las Azules) on Apple TV+. For ‘Norma’ was a story that saw all of Mexico City celebrate the end of the Undresser. To the point where Tito’s demise was covered heavily on television, and of course… down at the station there was relief. For the work was done in the eyes of the Commander and the detectives, and all could return to normal. But alas, there was no peace to be found amongst our core four heroines. For María really did believe that something was amiss and that the police brought an unjust man to justice and sullied his name in the process and that prompted her to talk with her cohorts, about opening up their own investigation. So that the truth could be exposed, and so they could of course, honor the badge they wore and the oath they took, and showcase how they were the right choice for the job, and well, everyone outright loved that particular idea. Which allowed for a sneaky plan to take place. Wherein Ángeles would gather forensic evidence through fingerprints while Natalia and María would interrogate the accused’s mother. All of which would prove without a doubt whether the police did the right thing or not, and sadly… it turned out that María’s concerns about the nature of the case, were correct. For Ángeles discovered inconsistency in the fingerprint data, the kind that showcased Tito merely touched the body over actually causing harm and Natalia and María came to learn… that Tito was incapable of even remotely committing these crimes. For he suffered a critical brain injury as a boy, and that caused him to suffer from all kinds of issues mentally and physically. To the point where his mother had to help him get to and from work, and that… was a stunning revelation.
One that prompted María, Natalia, and Ángeles to present the evidence and well… face the bullying in question. Because Gerardo was furious that an investigation took place that made, he and his bullpen look akin to fools. So, he immediately pushed back and threatened and postured and did everything but call Escobedo. Because this was unacceptable to him, and that put these aspiring police officers in a sorrowful place. One that was made worse by more bullying and sexism throughout the episode. Since they were also sent to the basement to do general policework as needed, after they asked nicely for such accommodations and well… all of those actions made it clear that no one wanted them to progress or showcase their skills, outside of Romandía, who fought hard to keep them on the beat, and well, as is the thinking for such actions, everyone expected a status quo to continue along.
But alas, the core four understood the opportunity in front of them here. Even Gabina, who stayed on the sidelines here because… she wanted clear of this to continue to rise. But this moment and much of the unwelcome sexism each of them faced outside of the station… only seemed to embolden them further. For each of them had something to say about the outcome of the overwhelming evidence they presented and were fiery over being told the right thing was the wrong thing. Not to mention, María was deeply worried about what was to come next. For now, the knowledge was in hand that the Undresser was in fact, still out there and coming face to face with that reality, only seemed to fuel her more in her quest to find justice. Especially after she saw his car in the cemetery. Since that informed her of his desire to be near his victims, regardless of his actions and that… more work needed to be done. But while we wait to see how María and her fellow officers respond to this, we can celebrate one smart tale. One that set the stage for the rise of the Women in Blue, by having bravado and machismo, and ignorance, remind them why they did this, and such toxic actions allowed for them to understand their abilities as officers and understand the power they could yield in a positive manner and that just made for great television through and through. The kind that has us rooting for them like never before. Because we know they’re right, we know the old way is stupid and they are likely the only ones that can bring down this monster and that makes the wait for next week’s episode, as painful as can be. For we are ready to see these intrepid officers push back against the bullies, and make the streets safe, as they swore to do. Until next time. Watch ‘Women in Blue (Las Azules)’

If there is one particular worry that people harbor when it comes to obtaining difficult work, or even a dream job… it is that said career path… could fundamentally transform us for the worse. Because time and time again, we’ve seen fame go to people’s heads and they forget about their roots and people that matter, and we’ve seen people transform because of the toxic nature of a job or because it’s so fruitful that the money becomes their only focus. So, this worry leaves all of us wondering, how then is it possible, if it all, to stay true oneself when careers can be powerful enough to alter a person’s overall personality, and well, the next episode of Acapulco on Apple TV+, answers that for us.
A feat that ‘Jessie’s Girl’ accomplished by deeply temping Maximo’s moral core. For his darling mother was struggling to keep finding work, because her eyesight was becoming a liability for her line of work. To the point where Sara had to help keep her mother happy at home, since she was going stir crazy, and she was close to discovering all kinds of secrets that Sara wanted to keep in the dark. Which left Maximo worried about the family’s finances, and that prompted him to speak to Don Pablo about how best to make the crazy money that Hector was pulling in, to save the family and give momma a little peace in her soul. Which as it turned out, involved being a little more open with the guests, so that Maximo could learn about their lives and how best to upsell them. All so he could enjoy a fatter tip, the kind he could pay the rent with and that prompted him to go all out and create an incredible proposal package for a young couple that he thought could afford such a venture. Only for him to learn, they were winners of a contest to stay at the resort and being greedy and going for the fattest tip possible was going to bankrupt them. Which put Maximo in that area of temptation. For he could have just ignored the reality that his clients had cash problems and scoop that money up, likely starting him down a darker path or let it go and continue to struggle, with the knowledge family issues could have been fixed, fast. Which was a difficult decision to say the least. But his story was indeed designed to inform us, that we don’t have to go that darker route, that we can be our best selves in tough positions like that, and at our dream jobs, and tough gigs… if we choose to stay true to who we are. Which Maximo learned through his mother and some of the reflection she was taking part in, while being out of work, and that prompted him, to bring about the best possible proposal for that couple without asking for anything in return… but their joy. Because that’s who Maximo truly is, and that’s who he will remain because he chose to stay true to himself and find a way to apply that to a place swimming in money, and that valuable lesson… will take him far in life, clearly. Since somewhere down the line, he will understand how to make money in a morally clear manner. But while we wait to see how that develops, we can celebrate quite the wholesome story. One that truly explored how easily one can lose themselves in a dream, courtesy of temptation and good old-fashioned money, and made Maximo an even more endearing character. But what matters most, is that this episode informs us, that this is going to be a different kind of comedy for certain. One that has heart and explores the best parts of us and how we can integrate that into worlds that are normally cold, and that will make for a lovely viewing experience. One that will satisfy and bring about smiles… thanks to the magnificent comedy that adds to the wonder of this charming series. Until next time. Watch ‘Acapulco’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 403 of ‘Snowpiercer’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
If there is one particular concept that shows up often in stories about the end of the world, it would have to be… the need to sacrifice for the greater good, and it makes sense as to why this appears so regularly in these stories. Simply because… civilization is gone in these stories, along with some of its more unwholesome and selfish trappings. Not to mention, humanity is often in short supply in these stories, so it stands to reason that everyone in that scary situation, would understand the odds, the fragile nature of life, and the need to sacrifice to keep the species going. But this concept, while unique and supremely hopeful in nature, does beg quite the important question. In that, would it truly be so easy for humanity to just forget about its old ways and embrace a new mantra that quickly? After all, we still hold to old traditions that mean nothing in the 21st century, and so many are unwilling to leave old ideas and processes behind. Which means that there is a very good chance, that if the world were to crumble… we would hold onto certain aspects of life that could be seen as counterintuitive to that concept, and well… would a push to not accept the notion of the greater good cause harm? Or would it remind us of what makes humanity worthwhile? Well, it just so happens that the next episode of Snowpiercer on AMC answers both of those questions. In fact, ‘Life Source’ let us know… the affirmative would apply to both questions. Because ignoring the greater good could remind us of what matters and what we should be fighting for as we rebuild the world, and that positive exploration was handled by Layton and the New Eden council. Because Layton was NOT doing well with the reality that his family life was ripped to shreds and in the midst of his grief, he felt… the best thing that could be done, was to pull Big Alice from the power grid and use the train to find his daughter, who he believed was likely aboard Snowpiercer and that was of course, an idea immediately met with disdain, and that only grew when Javi figured out how to get the old girl off of the grid, and maintain safety for the community.
All because, the belief that the greater good mattered above anything else, held true here. Yet, it wasn’t the consensus. In fact, Sam made it clear that while people were following Ruth’s lead on the matter, they had questions and concerns. Because now, a young life, the future of humanity, took a backseat over the greater good and that did not seem right, and that Layton should in fact be setting an example for the next generation by saving a single life. Which prompted Ruth to put it to a vote, one where Layton echoed similar thoughts to Sam and… was granted his chance to save his daughter. In the name of what makes us great, which is indeed something one would hope we would carry on if the going got tough, and that made for a beautiful and refreshing twist. One counterbalanced… by the admiral.
Because aboard Snowpiercer, life continued to be hell. In fact, Till, after she got out of the ship’s new brig, known as ‘The Hot Box’, confirmed that life on the train was awful. With people working twelve hours shifts and working to the bone and well, to alleviate that pain, she and Ben volunteered to take part in a special project for Milius and Nima. One that supposedly related to a new type of super fertilizer, but upon closer inspection… it was obvious that Milius needed their help in preparing a chemical agent. One likely designed to harm anyone that tried to board the train, all because Milius was so worried about the Greater Good and the mission, that he was willing to cause harm to what little of humanity was left. Which showcased how this concept can bring about great harm when viewed in a skewed and desperate manner. All of which, not only pondered deeply upon an idea that few stories in this vein have ever pondered upon but set the stage for the show’s moral conflict this season. Courtesy of an intricate and intense story that leaves us both hopeful and worried, that Layton can save the day and keep New Eden safe, and hopefully overcome the evil on the train. Since we always want to see good win the day and well, that hope will stay with us as the battle aboard Snowpiercer gets underway, for Big Alice is near, and her arrival will bring forth quite the philosophical battle to accompany the physical one. One that will explore, can we change for the better quickly if the stakes are high, or will our love of the status quo bring about the end of everything. Until next time. Watch ‘Snowpiercer’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Seven of ‘Orphan Black: Echoes’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One particularly fascinating aspect of stories that explore the consequences of chasing the truth, is how… personal that exploration can be. Since so many of them focus upon the fear such a quest instills in people and the worry that it generates as well. Alongside examinations of the emotional fallout that happens when a person uncovers a rough truth. All of which, while important and realistic in its own right… is narrow in vision. For the reveal of a tough truth harms more than just the person seeking it, especially when someone else orchestrated the lie, and that is why Orphan Black: Echoes on AMC, AMC+ and BBC America is of note. Because it is eager to examine the more global consequences of the truth… as evidenced by its next episode. For ‘The Dog’s Honest Truth’ took the time to really examine the lasting impact of what Kira Manning has done. For her grief-fueled decision impacted multiple new lifelines and this exploration was kicked into overdrive… by the reveal that Lucy met Eleanor and told Eleanor… everything. Which brought about immediate conflict in the Manning/Miller home and that allowed for the story to look at how the person who kept the truth at bay, will pay the piper for their actions. Something that isn’t explored often, but this episode made it clear that such a person… would suffer great consequences externally and internally. Since Kira had to bear the reality she crossed a lot of lines, and lost Eleanor in the process, again… since she left… and that put Kira in a dark and drunken place from which it seemed there was no return. Because the emotional weight of her actions nearly broke her. But that was merely the tip of the iceberg when it came to this powerful exploration. For this episode also examined what this truth did to Eleanor. Since she was of course, the person with the most to lose in this scenario and she rightfully took the news of her existence and her future hard and well… found solace in family through Lucas and also made sure to inform him of the disturbing facts surrounding her. All because she felt so betrayed and so hidden that she wanted the truth to be everywhere. To help in processing it and to help in hurting Kira for her actions. For the truth can devastate someone and bring them to their emotional knees and that was rightfully the case for Eleanor, who was now facing the end of a strange existence she did not understand.
However, while those made for devastating moments, another particular aspect of the truth that also doesn’t receive its due also appeared in this story. Such as, it can inspire good in others and push them to take part in bold actions with it in hand. Which for Lucy, involving being concerned less about the reality that she and Elanor, and Jules, were fated clones… and was more concerned about security and finding a safe future for each of them. So, that was why she went full speed ahead in going to the Miller/Manning residence and why she also made a stop to meet Jules’ ‘shrink’. So that she could garner information and intelligence to save her younger/alternate self and that was why she also worked to help Eleanor process the truth and learn from her, since their time together did inform her (hopefully) of that dark memory.
Sadly though, she didn’t get the information she sought to save Jules from Darros… but she didn’t need to. Because Jules was able to ascertain that Darros and Xander would do their best to try and smooth over their mistakes to get to her and get her to sign up with the cause. Which allowed for her to take advantage of the situation, surprise Xander and finally be free of this place. Because she too, had enough of the agenda surrounding her genetic origins and wanted freedom and she also saw this moment, as a grand opportunity to fight back. That was why she adopted a stray dog on the property to teach Darros quite the lesson. Since she lured Tom into a trap that wounded him deeply. To make sure that Darros would know this trio, who united at last… were through running and through with being controlled. Not to mention, Kira did find agency through her mistakes, since she realized she had to let go and make things right. Which prompted her to say goodbye to Eleanor and look deeply into Josh’s files and find concern over a launch day, and that in turn prompted her to speak with Emily about such matters, a dangerous move no less. But that came forth… because the truth did in fact, set Kira free and well, that was the perfect way to cap off a story that really did examine such matters in a far more refreshing light. Since it finally shifted focus from the self, to the global when it comes to what the truth does when revealed, and that made for an amazing story with amazing moments, and it does get us excited for what comes next. Especially now that three iterations of Eleanor are united and working toward a common good, because that many brilliant minds can only mean bad news for Darros, who also lost his mini-me to his ego, and it will be interesting to see what they have planned to finally be free of the unwholesome machinations that gave them life. Until next time. Watch ‘Orphan Black: Echoes’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Mammals’ (2024). To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Something that modern humanity doesn’t pay a whole lot of mind to anymore, is the environment and conditions that surround us. Simply because, we collectively hold to the reality that we have tamed much of the Earth and are the alpha species of the planet, and thanks to science and modern comforts… we don’t have to think about such matters all that often. For if it’s too cold, we can bundle up or crank up the heat. And if it’s too hot, we can beat it by dipping into our own custom water supply and/or hit the AC. Plus, we have structures that can keep us safe from nasty rainstorms, and we simply can avoid those harsher environments altogether, and all of that gives us great security and also, some real comfort. For we also have food and soft beds to sleep in, to go with that security, and that truly does allow for us to forget that nature is out there, fighting to survive while we sip on a hot cocoa in the heart of December and well… we should pay that reality mind. Not to instill a sense of guilt, but to remind us of our good fortune as a species and what work it took to get here, and the work that lies ahead to preserve our way of life, and the world we sometimes forget about, and that is why the BBC America series, Mammals, continues to impress. For it continues to showcase how there are other mammals out there that have figured how to survive in environments, we see as an inconvenience and that made ‘Cold’ quite the poignant tale. Since it took us into the polar and frozen regions of our world, to showcase what life is like out there, and well… it is both harsh and fascinating to say the least. After all, there are bears in the arctic north that don’t always slip into hibernation right away, simply because they know of a river that is naturally warm during the winter and is home to some magnificent salmon that can help some bears that didn’t beef up quick enough, get the calories they need to survive, and that was quite amazing to witness. And even the little ones of the world have traditions they hold to, to see tomorrow. Since the tiny pika of the north remains on its schedule in the untouched frozen regions it calls home, wherein it builds its nest in a sassy and thieving manner to prepare for the long winters ahead. For nature is indeed resilient and smart and learns how best to function and that’s wonderful all things considered. Because the cold environments are changing. For we are now inching into those areas and that’s forcing snow leopards to change their hunting tactics and use our livestock for their food. Not to mention, nature is fighting to adapt to the changes happening around the globe from a climate perspective. Since we are now seeing polar bears shift from their usual hunting grounds to eat other creatures in the food chain, because of those changes and that isn’t the only stunning behavior happening in the deep cold of the world, related to climate change. Because some animals are battling so hard to eat, that they sometimes have to resort to cannibalism of the fallen members of their species, all because food patterns have been disrupted and they aren’t quite at the stage where they can do as the polar bear and venture forth into new hunting grounds. Which is… the other reason we should pay nature mind. So, we can see the impact we as a species are having upon it. For our rapid growth and our fight to conquer all of nature… has brought about great change and that change is indeed causing harm, and seeing that harm, may help in opening our eyes to the reality… that we have to do more to help the world and restore balance for species that can’t make quick decisions to adapt to an environment as we do. Which added real gravity to this tale, and a fine understanding of how the masters of the planet can likely do more to protect that which they have conquered, and hopefully this episode helps to start some conversations on what we can do differently to protect the colder regions of the world, so we can continue to be in awe of the species that thrive there when we simply cannot. Until next time. Watch ‘Mammals’ (2024)
