If there is one particular worry that people harbor when it comes to obtaining difficult work, or even a dream job… it is that said career path… could fundamentally transform us for the worse. Because time and time again, we’ve seen fame go to people’s heads and they forget about their roots and people that matter, and we’ve seen people transform because of the toxic nature of a job or because it’s so fruitful that the money becomes their only focus. So, this worry leaves all of us wondering, how then is it possible, if it all, to stay true oneself when careers can be powerful enough to alter a person’s overall personality, and well, the next episode of Acapulco on Apple TV+, answers that for us.
A feat that ‘Jessie’s Girl’ accomplished by deeply temping Maximo’s moral core. For his darling mother was struggling to keep finding work, because her eyesight was becoming a liability for her line of work. To the point where Sara had to help keep her mother happy at home, since she was going stir crazy, and she was close to discovering all kinds of secrets that Sara wanted to keep in the dark. Which left Maximo worried about the family’s finances, and that prompted him to speak to Don Pablo about how best to make the crazy money that Hector was pulling in, to save the family and give momma a little peace in her soul. Which as it turned out, involved being a little more open with the guests, so that Maximo could learn about their lives and how best to upsell them. All so he could enjoy a fatter tip, the kind he could pay the rent with and that prompted him to go all out and create an incredible proposal package for a young couple that he thought could afford such a venture. Only for him to learn, they were winners of a contest to stay at the resort and being greedy and going for the fattest tip possible was going to bankrupt them. Which put Maximo in that area of temptation. For he could have just ignored the reality that his clients had cash problems and scoop that money up, likely starting him down a darker path or let it go and continue to struggle, with the knowledge family issues could have been fixed, fast. Which was a difficult decision to say the least. But his story was indeed designed to inform us, that we don’t have to go that darker route, that we can be our best selves in tough positions like that, and at our dream jobs, and tough gigs… if we choose to stay true to who we are. Which Maximo learned through his mother and some of the reflection she was taking part in, while being out of work, and that prompted him, to bring about the best possible proposal for that couple without asking for anything in return… but their joy. Because that’s who Maximo truly is, and that’s who he will remain because he chose to stay true to himself and find a way to apply that to a place swimming in money, and that valuable lesson… will take him far in life, clearly. Since somewhere down the line, he will understand how to make money in a morally clear manner. But while we wait to see how that develops, we can celebrate quite the wholesome story. One that truly explored how easily one can lose themselves in a dream, courtesy of temptation and good old-fashioned money, and made Maximo an even more endearing character. But what matters most, is that this episode informs us, that this is going to be a different kind of comedy for certain. One that has heart and explores the best parts of us and how we can integrate that into worlds that are normally cold, and that will make for a lovely viewing experience. One that will satisfy and bring about smiles… thanks to the magnificent comedy that adds to the wonder of this charming series. Until next time. Watch ‘Acapulco’
