Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist. For the most part, fans of television are able to put upcoming shows out of sight and out of mind after they are announced. Simply because they understand it takes a village to assemble a show, and good things come to those who wait. But sometimes, the raw potential of an announced project really resonates with us and calls to us, and leaves us curious to know more, and it is safe to say that what STARZ put forth regarding The Couple Next Door, did just that. For their initial announcement of the show spoke to a dark and powerful, and outright bold story that was going to wow us every step of the way, and that absolutely left us eager for more. So, we could understand the show’s potential and how dark it intends to go. But while we do indeed need to wait a little longer to garner a hard understanding of that, since the show doesn’t arrive until 2024, that isn’t stopping STARZ from giving us something to chew upon. For earlier today, the network released some first look photos from the show. To give us an idea of what this talented cast is going to look like on screen, and what the aesthetic of the show is going to be, and since you’re eager to have those very questions answered, here are those first look photos for you to enjoy, alongside some updated details regarding The Couple Next Door, courtesy of STARZ. ‘STARZ has released an early look at the six-part dark thriller, “The Couple Next Door,” premiering in 2024 following an earlier run on Channel 4 in the UK. The series, which stars Sam Heughan (“Outlander,” “Suspect”), Eleanor Tomlinson (“The Outlaws,” “Poldark”), Jessica De Gouw (“Pennyworth,” Our Man from Jersey) and Alfred Enoch (Tigers, “How to Get Away with Murder”) recently wrapped filming in Leeds and Belgium earlier this summer. “The Couple Next Door” will be available on Channel 4 this fall in the UK and on STARZ in 2024 in the US and Canada. When Evie (Tomlinson) and Pete (Enoch) move into an upscale neighborhood, they find themselves in a world of curtain twitching and status anxiety. But soon find friendship in the shape of the couple next door, alpha traffic cop Danny (Heughan) and his wife, glamorous yoga instructor Becka (De Gouw). As time goes on, these two couples get increasingly close to each other and one fateful night, become sexually entangled in a way that will change their lives forever… “The Couple Next Door” is a deliciously dark, psychological drama, exploring the claustrophobia of suburbia and the fallout of chasing your deepest desires. Directed by Dries Vos (“Suspect,” “Professor T”) and written by David Allison (Marcella, “Bedlam”), the six-part series is an addictive, emotional roller coaster and looks at how we never know what goes on behind closed doors. Jo McGrath, Walter Iuzzolino, Alison Kee serve as executive producers and the producer is Jen Burnet. The series is produced by Eagle Eye Drama and distributed worldwide by Beta Film. Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the AMC/Sundance Now series, Black Snow, has offered up a vastly different type of cold case crime drama, and rightfully so. Simply because nothing about this series has been conventional in the slightest. For it has been emotional in nature, courtesy of a deep look at the emotional fallout of losing a loved one to murder. Not to mention, it has made a point to really look at how these cases are solved, and showcased the mundane hard work that goes into sorting everything out, and well… it is showing no signs of slowing down regarding this realistic and refreshing look at cold case work, as evidenced by this week’s fascinating episode. For ‘Ezekial’ opted to explore an aspect of detective work we don’t think about or talk about in this life. In that… once word is on the street that the police have evidence and/or solid clues… the job gets more difficult. Not easier as is oft depicted in television. Because now, investigators have to sort through the various clues and nonsense that people feed to the police out of concern of either doing their civic duty or indulging unhealthy fantasies. Not to mention, there’s more resistance and reticence from people close to the case. Because merely hearing that there is a lead, a push toward something… makes them less helpful and more eager to see the case be solved and well, that’s a lot of what of James dealt with early on in this tale. Since phone calls and clues were coming in that had no evidence to back them up and Isabel’s family was less forthcoming for certain. Which meant that James had to do what all investigators do when the going gets tough… they stick to the case at hand, to the evidence, and James did just that, and that paid off in spades. Since he finally had a better understanding of the night in question and where Isabel was and where she ended up, and that allowed for him to dig deeper since there were indeed irregularities and concerns that he had regarding the timeline, and that too, paid off handsomely. Since he garnered information about Isabel potentially having a second suitor in her life, a man named Ezekial, and well… eventually he was able to confirm that there was indeed something there. All because of his incredible focus and his ability to really worry about what mattered, which is another realistic angle present in this tale, one that did indeed move the case forward leaps and bounds. Because eventually, James came to learn that blue car was the one that Ezekial drove around town, but that it belonged to the church instead, and that prompted James to push a little harder and learn… that there are more secrets than expected surrounding the death of Isabel. Some of which was made known to him, some of which was only made known to us. Like the one involving Hazel since someone consistently made overtures about her telling the truth. Giving rise to the fact that she is torn between two worlds and knows more than she is leading on, and the same goes for her father. Since it was inferred that he was consoling Ezekial on the night of the murder, and of course, he refused to offer any details and well… that… and the fact that James and Hazel learned that he was in contact with Ezekial long after this mess happened, made him the prime suspect by the end of this tale. For now… dear old dad seems to harbor all the answers. But that aside, we need to celebrate one intense and unique episode. One that really did look at the real-world aspect of this case once again, before taking us on quite the ride. Wherein the truth began to expose itself in a manner that reminded us… that there are always clues, always mistakes, and eventually with enough scrutiny and care… they can be seen. As to what comes next, well that all depends on what decision a preacher with a troubled conscience makes. For he could open up and lead James quickly to the truth… or he could triple down and push to keep whatever he knows in the dark. Pushing James to work harder than ever to uncover what really happened to Isabel that night and more than likely the latter option is the path ahead. For this town is full of secrets and lies regarding the moment that tore them apart, and in a way… it seems as though this town is hanging onto it all to properly punish their souls for not doing more to prevent the end of Isabel. Until next time. Watch ‘Black Snow’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 204 of ‘Almost Paradise’. To revisit the previous episode, clickhere. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
For the most part, crime dramas rarely explore the world they inhabit in an intimate manner. Yes, we see landmarks and have a good understanding of the how the city operates. But the nit and grit, the daily life stuff and the lore and history of a particular location stay in the shadows, and it makes sense as to why. For the crime and the investigators that deal with them are the focus of the story, and the city is merely the world in which they play in and well… that is simply what audiences accept about crime dramas. Which is why the next episode of Almost Paradise on Amazon Freevee is of note. Simply because, ‘Bahala Na’ took the time to break from that convention hard, and toy with what a crime story might look like if it dug deep into the history and the culture of the city in which its heroes work. A feat that this story accomplished, by creating quite the problem for Alex Walker. In that, the gift shop was infested with termites and that meant he needed a place to stay, and thankfully, Ernesto opened the doors to his home inside a commune to Alex. Which brought forth a unique sleeping arrangement for Alex, since he was to bunk with Ernesto’s granddad, Silvio, who also lived with Ernesto and his family, and one quiet night… brought forth some surprises. Because someone tried to kill Silvio, and that attempt on his life, one foiled by Ernesto and Alex, prompted the department to investigate the attack. Wherein they came to learn, this kind of attack was happening all over the island and that other older gentlemen were dying off at alarming rate and there was in fact, a common thread to this case outside of age. In that, all of the men that died, served in World War II as part of a unit that worked on an important mission with the Americans and Silvio was part of that unit. But the bigger concern on Ernesto’s mind was why Silvio, and so many from his unit, were being targeted and killed and sadly… it came down to ego and secrets. For an intrepid reporter was also looking into this, and she came to discover that the grandfather of a hopeful senator, Colonel Alejandro Fernandez, shamefully served this unit, and was hoping to have anyone that might have knowledge of his disgusting and cowardly actions, removed from the equation. All to continue maintain his family’s proud (and false) legacy, since he sold himself as a true hero of that unit. And that truth, alongside that reporter’s eagerness to spread it with the world, forced Alejandro’s lackeys to act foolishly to protect the truth… and that allowed for Alex, and Kai, and Ernesto to move in and save the day, and even restore Silvio’s honor in a beautiful ending that wrapped up… a powerful exploration of the past regarding the Philippines’ involvement in the Second World War. Which let’s be honest, isn’t something we read about in history books all that often. For the vast majority of history regarding the Pacific Theater in that war, revolves around the American Campaign to retake the region. But in reality, it was a joint effort, and while dramatized certainly, we still were able to learn more about life under Japanese Empirical rule during that era, and the contributions soldiers from the Philippines made to the war effort and well… that made for a very different type of episode. One that basically balanced the action with a fascinating history lesson. One told through the eyes of Silvio, and well… this was quite the revolutionary move for an established crime story to make, but it is one that pays off in spades. Simply because… it’s refreshing, it’s bold and it does the impossible… it explores the world it is set in. Allowing for the Philippines to be more than just pretty visuals and allowing for this story to be more than just a high-octane crime drama… and that is no small feat, and it works here. Not to mention, this move also allowed for the cast to stretch their acting legs a bit. For Silvio’s story about the past, allowed for Art Acuña, Samantha Richelle, and Christian Kane to take on new roles as people from Silvio’s memories from that mission. Which made for some fascinating and downright quality performances since each actor melted into these echoes from the past. If anything, all of these elements combined to bring forth one bold and beautiful episode. One that really did add newfound depth to this series, and informed us that it is going to do some amazing things in season two, and tinker with the structure of the crime drama and see what it is capable of, and if this is the opening salvo to that exploration, then we are in for quite the treat as season two of this refreshing and original series continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘Almost Paradise’

One particular type of genre of film that people tend to flock to often, is the epic romance. Wherein star-crossed lovers’ cross mountains and oceans to try and be together, for their hearts crave one another and long for the connection they share, and we flock to these stories for some simple reasons. For starters, we’re all suckers for beautiful romances that revolve around where the heart wins the day and because… these are also perfect escapist stories. Since they present us with what we all wish romance could be. A genuinely magical and whimsical experience where we only feel joy and wonder. If anything, the majesty, and the escapist nature of these stories is top of mind today, simply because the next episode of The Afterparty on Apple TV+ showcased the highs and the lows of this genre. A feat that ‘Ulysses’ accomplished, by exploring what made this iconic FUncle the isolated and quirky man we met in the season two premiere, and well, it turned out… that an epic romance for the ages did the trick. One that was forged in tragedy when young Ulysses was part of the USO Tour in the First Iraq War. Since a dark day in the war, broke him and kept him from his love of dance. But Vivian was there to revitalize it and his heart and his passion for dance, and that led… to the love affair we know and love in this genre. Where Ulysses could achieve anything by being with and near Vivian. All of which celebrated the majesty of the genre, before deeply exploring some of its problems. Specifically, how it is a little too escapist at times. For we do see these stories ruin lives in the name of love and that’s not right, and that’s why this story took quite the turn. Because there was a real chance here for Vivian to leave Feng and start over with her children in the arms of Ulysses. But she came to understand that this was wrong, and she broke it off, and that led to Feng learning of the truth and pushing Ulysses away and just like that… he became the isolated world traveler we met in the premiere. A man that knew that his love for Vivian was toxic and being near her would cause more harm than good. But only returned to do right by his nieces. Or rather… potential family. Because this sequence posed quite the powerful question. Such as whether or not Ulysses was actually Grace’s real father since her age matched up with the love affair, all of which brought home a sobering side to these stories that they gloss over, while explaining exactly what Ulysses was doing with the glass. Since he intended to learn the truth about his genetic relationship to Grace for his own peace of mind. All of which, was a brilliant way to properly celebrate and criticize this iconic genre. For it really did showcase what makes the epic romance so special and where it needs to improve, and it did so in a very objective and thoughtful manner, and yet it still found ways to make us laugh to keep true with what this show really stands for. Courtesy of some perfect satire of the over-the-top moments that we sometimes find present within the genre, and let’s be honest… it’s John Cho that allows for this story to work so well. Because he uses his comedic and acting chops here to sell every moment with the right amount of humor and dramatic gravitas, and that made for one incredible story when all is said and done. One that also set the stage for the forthcoming season two finale. Because Ulysses’ story here, makes this crime suddenly quite personal and difficult for Aniq. Since he now harbors a powerful secret about the family and of course… he must figure out how to navigate this to get to the truth, and well… we may be closer than ever in obtaining that. Since Feng and Vivian are refusing to be interviewed, which brings suspicion surrounding them to a whole new level, and of course… the camera footage from the weekend, the kind that could harbor all kinds of secrets… is about to be seen at last. All of which is going to lead to a powerful conclusion to this tale. One that could potentially shatter two families forever when we finally learn, who killed Edgar… and why. Until next time. This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist. There are a great many elements that go into creating a supremely special story. For starters, it needs to feature a unique plot that captivates an audience. Something that is refreshing and diverse from what is currently out there and is of course engaging and entertaining. Not to mention, it also needs to feature unique characters that stand out and resonate with the audience on a fundamental level. But above all, it needs to be so original, that it transcends the various formats of storytelling out there. Since that denotes a story that connects with people on a fundamental level, and that kind of story is top of mind today, simply because one in that vein is about to debut on Acorn TV. For September 18, 2023, will see the arrival of Mrs Sidhu Investigates, a title that should be familiar to many. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 203 of ‘Dark Winds’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
One of the most difficult struggles/lessons we will deal with in this life, is figuring out exactly how we balance our emotions with our daily life when hard times are upon us or dark news falls into our laps. Because all we want to do when the clouds roll in, is hide, and feels our feels or deal with whatever is in front of us as only we know how to do. But alas, the world keeps on turning, and life doesn’t stop while we hurt. Which means we still have to trudge into work and deal with the mundane stuff we simply don’t want to… and therein lies the difficulty. For we will in fact, have to push through now and again and figure out how to remain professional and succinct while our heart aches and our emotions boil. If anything, this tough moment in life is top of mind today, simply because it was one of the focal themes of this week’s episode of Dark Winds on AMC. For ‘Antigonish’ picked up shortly after Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn received the news from Benny regarding the fact that the Blond Man was floating around the Reservation shortly before Joe Junior died in that terrible accident, and that he was likely responsible for Joe Junior’s death, and that put Joe in quite the tough place. Because just like that… his life was turned upside down and he had likely faced off against the man that took his son from this world, and that was a lot to process and a lot to weigh upon his soul. Which was why we were treated to a powerful moment between Emma and Joe, wherein the gravity of this and the emotion was present in almost mere silence, and of course… the power of that moment, and the pain present within it, set the stage for the lesson at hand. For while Joe tried to reconcile this truth and ponder upon a way forward… the man responsible for such pain was back at it and causing incredible trouble. Because the Blond Man had of course arrived at the hospital and had his eyes on putting Jim Chee down. But thankfully, Jim recognized this monster from the shootout, and was able to evade him in a tense sequence of events. Wherein Jim and the Blond Man played a horrible game of cat and mouse while Jim waited for help. For he was able to get word to Bernadette that the monster was in his midst, and this jackass even sustained a little damage in the fight. But alas, he did indeed escape and well… the manhunt that followed is where Joe had to learn that valuable lesson. Because just like that, Joe was in the thick of it again, and desperately searching for this man, while trying to maintain a professional air, and that was no easy task. For now, his son was part of this and the father in him needed real justice through and through and it was powerful to watch Joe go through this and struggle with it as so many of us do.
Yet what made this episode so incredibly worthwhile, is that it offered up so much more than just Joe’s struggles to be the perfect cop and the perfect father. For the manhunt provided the story with some respite from the action and the tension, wherein we could further explore the lives of the characters. And learn how Jim Chee is a man that engenders great trust and is someone that people look up to, as evidenced by how he handled the Benny situation when Benny needed a ride to be handed off to his mother. Plus, this also allowed for us to see how Emma was handling the struggles of pregnant women on the reservation and the fight she continued to have with that intrepid reporter, and… believe it or not… there was enough downtime in this story to allow for us to learn more about the Blond Man.
Such as the fact that he has been desperately searching, for his mother. Which added a new and unfortunate layer to the man. Because that revelation, made it clear that this creep is flat out damaged goods. That prototypical dude bro with mommy issues that feels he must resort to violence to find peace over that which he cannot reconcile with his mother. Which makes him even more dangerous than before, because any man that happens to harbor this level of emotional damage and will go to extremes in this manner to feel something… is as scary as they come. Not to mention, his determination and cruelty in this tale knew no bounds and it would seem… that Joe and Bernadette are indeed about to learn just how mad this man truly happens to be. Since the show is catching up to that epic shootout, we saw in the opening minutes of season two. But what matters more… is that once again, the characters were king in this tale. For we were able to see our intrepid hero deal with some relatable matters, and we truly came to learn more about Jim and Emma and what makes them tick, and we even were privy to learning about the villain and see the depths of his evil… alongside enjoying action and adventure and incredible tension. Which means this episode had it all really, and it once again reminded of why we love it so. For it’s a Navajo Noir Western filled with depth and humanity, and it can wow us on a moment’s notice with tension and action that takes our breath away. And now that we are minutes away from having Joe and Bernadette take fire from this maniac, the time has come for us to wait with bated breath to see where this powerful story takes us next and to see if Joe can find the balance he desperately needs right now. Until next time. Watch ‘Dark Winds’
Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 2 of ‘The Wild Sides’. To revisit the Series Premiere, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist. When we last settled in to discuss the fascinating new BBC America documentary series, The Wild Sides, we talked at length about how the show’s series premiere, went to some ugly places. For it truly held nothing back in its exploration regarding the brutal nature of mother nature, and how the animals that make up the world have to fight hard to see another day. It just so happened that the animals spotlighted here, had to fight extra hard. For the Mashatu Wildness in Botswana was in essence, devoid of water and that oddly enough, brought forth quite the surprise. Since all the local species in this region congregated and settled near a riverbed since it was the only source of water left… setting the stage for a new dynamic in this region. Wherein a community of sorts was coming together and well… it is definitely safe to say that everyone that tuned in was curious as to what that was going to look like. Because now predators and prey were standing by side by side in close proximity, giving rise to the possibility of either a stunning harmony or utter chaos and well, the next episode in this story made it clear… that chaos would be the dynamic going forward in this desperate attempt to be near that which sustains life… water. Which made ‘Floods and Foes’ quite the harrowing story to say the least. Mainly because… there was a tension that hung heavy over this story. For every animal that made the journey and settled in, had to keep close watch on their children and their shelter, since every animal in this place now was hungry and ready to take what was deemed necessary. Which brought forth serious heartbreak to say the least. Since that meant that predators were carefully watching and were opportunists for certain. Which brought an early end to some young lives and to make matters worse… getting food was no easy task. For every animal was willing to jump in and steal a warm meal, and that meant some animals tried to hide their prizes to ensure they could feed and sustain their energy and their families. But even that was no easy task since hunger brings forth ingenuity, and yet… the situation still deteriorated. For the apex predator of these lands found their way to the dusty riverbank. For lions were in need of sustenance and water as well, and that made for more tense moments, and sorrow, and chaos as everyone worked to avoid the lions with some success. All of which, made for a dark tale once again, and understandably so. For this is the world, and this is how it operates, but thankfully… this episode did serve to remind us… that happy days find their way into the chaos as well. Because in the midst of this struggle, a surprise finally came down from the sky. In that, rain finally came to this dry place and filled up the riverbed with more than holes and mud. Which brought forth, celebration really, wherein these thirsty animals could finally have their fill and live their lives as they normally would. Which in the case of the elephants here, involved a joyous mud bath and water play. Plus, the river attracted new prey to the area, allowing for a brief respite from the fear and the tension that was present here since everyone could eat the birds that arrived instead of one another. But alas, it is inherently obvious that such joyous days will not last in this volatile part of the world. For this documentary has made it clear that chaos rules the day out there. Which means we should be prepared for more brutal days and challenges for the animals that now call this riverbank home. But while we wait to see what new conflict is on the horizon, we can celebrate one incredible tale. One that once more offered an unfettered look nature’s brutality, and despite this episode’s shocking nature at times, we are still eager to see more. In part to be reminded of how lucky we are, but also… to see how this incredible story will come to a close. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt

It really is quite amazing, how much depth the Freeform series, Praise Petey, is sending our way. Because it is exploring all kinds of important concepts. Such as what it means to stick to one’s guns when morality is in jeopardy, and the importance of facing our past and fighting through our pain and trauma, and well… you just don’t see that in a comedy all that often. Especially one that is animated and features a town made up of cult members and a powerful tortoise that oversees weddings, and well… this show is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to sending powerful lessons our way, as evidenced by this week’s block of stories. For ‘The Tangible Secret’ and ‘Drippy Drips’ are a pair of stories that explored… how we embrace leadership in this life when everyone is looking to us to be the hero and how that role requires tough decisions and sacrifices that we have to make happen and it accomplished all of that… by giving Petey something of an imposter crisis. Because at first, she was worried that she would never be able to properly lead the people of New Utopia. Because she really felt they needed someone that had a deeper understanding of life to give them meaning, not just a status symbol. Which prompted her to seek out advice, that eventually came from her father, wherein he told her he had something set up on the mountain on the edge of town that would give her the knowledge she sought. Which brought forth a grand quest for Petey, one that included Bandit and his little adopted brother for the day, er… weekend really since this trip took a long time, and well, this journey demystified so much for Petey. Because in reality, she did put her dad on a pedestal and expected him to have some kind of answers since he did lead this troupe for so long, but in the end, he really had nothing to offer. For he was a man, not a god, something that Bandit needed to be reminded of as well. Which meant that Petey came to learn that in some instances, leadership isn’t something we can be guided through, not when people are in immediate need of someone to help them. We just have to embrace it, be the person they need and give them what is important in the interim as we learn on the job, and she did just that. Which gave her breathing room, and time to observe the town and ponder upon how best to really lead these people and install changes to make their lives genuinely better and well… New Utopia’s exclusive ice cream deal brought forth that opportunity. Because something as simple as offering options to the townsfolk, could in fact help them begin to break away from their hard belief that they must be led at all times. So, she set out to break that deal, in the midst of one weird day in New Utopia. For it was Swamp Gas Release Day, where swamp gas was vented and everyone got high and weird and that meant Petey had to navigate the high to get what she wanted and eventually… she used the gas to her advantage to get the deal cut loose, and in the process… she managed to set so much good in motion. For the exclusive deal was in place to help fund a spaceport. Yes, a spaceport. For aliens to come save everyone. And by ending the deal, she ended the spaceport and helped so many. Because now others could be free and push toward a tomorrow without that silly goal in mind. Giving rise to a hard call and a sacrifice for the town in some ways, but that’s what a good leader must do to grow people and well, good call or no, it may lead to conflict. Because not everyone agreed with this decision, but hey… at least Petey has another good leader in her corner on such matters, since Bandit became the new town mayor over Pancakes the Dog. But in the end, what matters most, is that we were able to enjoy two more thoughtful and intriguing episodes that left us with plenty to learn and potentially apply to our lives. Because we may find ourselves in a similar spot someday, without swamp gas and carnal desires of course, and well, in the end, these stories just helped to remind us of how transformative this series is for animated entertainment, and it will be interesting to see what other amazing lessons await us when the season finale of this brilliant show arrives next week. Until then. Watch ‘Praise Petey’

If there is one thing that people seek out often in this world, it is great leaders. Because great leaders bring out the best in people and inspire them to do more and be more, and to perhaps chase their own dream so they too can one day be at the top. But what’s fascinating about how we view great leaders, is that we only see them for who they are at the end of their journey. Where they are the person, we admire and aspire to be more like and that unfortunately, leads us to believe that great leaders are born and forged in a manner that is almost mystical. When in reality, that isn’t the case at all. For great leaders are oft forged in failure and through mistakes. The kind that they learn from because that is how greatness is achieved. If anything, the real process as to what forges a great leader is top of mind today, because it would seem that is what a great deal of season two of the STARZ series, Minx, is going to focus upon. For ‘Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Sexiness’ took the time to catch us up with Joyce and the team down the line, and in the thick of publication. Wherein the typewriters were rolling, and Doug was scheming and even Shelley was back at work, bringing erotic magic to life through her sexually charged pseudo diary stories. And while everyone was working hard to bring together a great magazine, Joyce found herself being pulled about everywhere really. For the musician she met at the party in last week’s episode, made his feelings clear and plunged her into a torrid love affair and when she wasn’t at his hotel enjoying his company in bed, she was trying her best to balance life at work. Such as keeping Richie creatively satisfied, since for some reason his ideas just weren’t vibing with what she thought the magazine should be doing. Which brought about conflict between the two of them for the first time ever and Doug… well… he was still trying to battle his Imposter Syndrome, by doing outside of the box thinking with the brand. Such as setting up a grandiose Minx themed show entitled Club Minx. Which revolved around empowerment for women and championed the sexual revolution and the sexual appetites of women. All of which was designed to support and grow the brand and yet, Joyce wasn’t having it. Which surprised Doug too since he expected there to be creative support from Joyce and well… her constant stonewalling of well, everyone… was a symptom of something deeper, of mistakes to come really. In that, this is Joyce’s first go round as the leader of something this special, and while she does indeed belong and is the right person to lead the magazine to glory… she’s still a novice, a rookie, if you will. Which means… she is going to make a bevy of mistakes, in fact, she already has. After all, she suddenly is turning off the creative spigot for everyone else and offering only her vision and that… isn’t how this magazine used to operate. For not that long ago she was all about inclusion of ideas and freedom and well, that is going to lead to tough days ahead. The kind that will humble her when she hurts others and pisses them off with her push to be the supreme leader, and hopefully… she will learn from the mistakes made here, and the mistakes that lie ahead. Because that is what will forge her into a great leader, one that people admire through and through. In the end however, this was simply, a brilliant tale. Simply it explored something we don’t discuss all that often when it comes to leadership and it did so, in a thorough and powerful and relatable manner. Since we saw the direct impact of this upon Doug and Richie, and how it made them feel and how it pushed them into negative territory, and we’ve been there, plain, and simple. But of course, ugly lessons aside, this was still a lighthearted tale, one that featured the right balance of laughs and more amazing moments with Bambi, who always steals a scene when given the chance. And now that we’ve reached the end of this opening chapter of a difficult story for Joyce, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for her to learn what great leadership looks like, and whether or not there will be great damage left in the wake of her learning experience. Until next time. Watch ‘Minx’
