For the most part, dystopian stories, or stories about a post-apocalyptic world… tend to follow one of two paths. Wherein we explore the hard life of a devastated and altered world or see people trying to rise above the chaos and restore the best parts of modern society, and it makes sense why these plotlines are so commonly followed. Simply because, they allow for laser focused examinations of the human condition, the kind that can ponder upon the worst parts of us and how easy it can be to accept a dark reality or what makes humanity special and resilient and worth saving. But now and again, you run into tales in this unsettling vein that opt to do something a little more realistic, such as Twisted Metal on Peacock. For this series opted in its next episode… to remind us of the fact that our world is never one thing or another… it’s always operating in the grey, where good happens and bad happens all at once, even at the end of everything, and it accomplished that feat by giving John and Quiet quite the unique mission. For ‘WHZDARE’ saw them be scooped up by a group of intelligent truck drivers. Who used semis and technology to create, The Convoy, a mobile civilization that never stopped and lived and died in the trailers of 18-wheelers and well… they weren’t evil folks, just people in need of a Milkman, and his services, stat. Because their leader was ill and in need of medicine and if John was willing to make a run to a nearby pharmacist of sorts, they would provide him with provisions for his trip to Chicago, and some much-needed weapons. Since EV3L1N was stripped to the bone by Stone and his lackeys. So of course… they took up the mission and that allowed for us to see a world filled with grey. For there were roving bands of ‘holy’ rollers causing harm to people out there because they could in the name of whatever stupid reason they had in mind, alongside… scared people capable of good. Such as the pharmacist, who initially mistook Quiet and John as those monsters and nearly harmed them before offering up the medication needed for the Convoy’s leader. Showcasing a world that was firmly planted in the middle, and where people were doing their best to survive and find little snippets of peace and joy. Which oddly, John and Quiet found when they needed to hide for the night. Since they holed up in a movie theater and watched some classics and added their own lines. All of which made for a very bittersweet tale, one that didn’t let up when daybreak arrived. For a return to the Convoy revealed, that the dear leader of this place… wasn’t in a hurry for treatment… they were ready for the end of their life. And what John and Quiet were tasked with retrieving was nothing more than end of life medication to bring peace and comfort to her final hours on this Earth. Which brought forth a somber moment in the Convoy before there was a celebration of life. One that was loud and fun and full of redemption and reconnection for some before John and Quiet were on their way. With some fine lessons in hand. In that, life is still going on in this world and they should find joy within it when they can, and it would seem they took that to heart, courtesy of the banter that played out as they returned to the road and the darkness that awaits in Topeka. But in the here and the now, we really were presented with a vastly different type of post-apocalyptic story. One that really did showcase how in many ways, the core of modern society could stay the same in the TMU. For that fear we harbor about people roving about was present, there was still love and respect for our elders and sorrow and joy when they leave us, and there was still fun to be had, and connective moments between lost souls. Since John and Quiet did open up, and that made for a delightful story in the end. One that was a fine example of how the world is everything and anything, all at once. Plus, it was both refreshing and fascinating, and it does leave us to wonder, if the good that Quiet found here will make her less eager to enact revenge when she and John arrive at Agent Stone’s doorstep in Topeka, Kansas. Until next time. Watch ‘Twisted Metal’

One particular aspect of storytelling in film and television that we don’t discuss enough, is the importance of music. Because music, is sometimes what sells an iconic scene. For without the swell of violin strings, we may not be moved to tears, and without the blast of trumpets, we may not cheer in triumph alongside the hero. For it is music that really completes an experience or sets the tone for one to come and that is precisely why today’s announcement from Prime Video is of such importance. For earlier, the network let it be known that Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ will serve as the opening title theme song for the new Prime Video thriller series, Wilderness. Which will undoubtedly set the vibe for the audience and inform them of what lies ahead, and for proof… well then look no further than the teaser that Prime Video released alongside this news. One that Prime Video was gracious enough to share with us, that we will now share with you (alongside some plot details). To give you an idea how much of a difference this song will make in setting the mood for the show, as we begin to countdown to the premiere of this fascinating new series. ‘Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ has been revealed as the song of the opening titles for UK Original thriller series Wilderness. The re-recorded track from Reputation makes its global debut in the series teaser released today. Wilderness will launch globally on Prime Video on 15 September. The defiant ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ reflects Liv’s (Jenna Coleman) transformation after her supposed “happily-ever-after” quickly turns into a living nightmare on discovering her husband Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is having an affair. Liv becomes the actress starring in Will’s bad dreams after she learns about his betrayal, and her heartbreak is swiftly followed by another emotion: fury. The couple embark on an American road trip Liv’s fantasized about since she was little, from the Grand Canyon on through Yosemite, before ending up with a hedonistic weekend in Las Vegas. For Will, it’s a chance to make amends; for Liv, it’s a very different prospect—a landscape where accidents happen all the time. The perfect place to get revenge. Look what he made her do… Taylor Swift’s track ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ is the latest addition to the psychological thriller driven by a female team, created by Marnie Dickens, based on B.E. Jones’ novel, directed by So Yong Kim, and executive produced by Elizabeth Kilgarriff.’ Written by John Edward Betancourt

When it comes to storytelling, there are a great many elements that go into creating a memorable hero that is loved by the masses. For starters, they need to be genuinely good people that champion what’s right in the world and they cannot waiver from that core. Sure, they can stumble and be flawed human beings as we all are, but they must stand for what’s right. Plus, they need to be personable and accessible, and of course… they need to be relatable and realistic in nature. But above all… they also need to have a true villain in their lives. A monster that serves as the anthesis of everything our hero stands for and makes their life hell, and well… that blueprint for a hero… is likely reason Number 10,435 that we love the Amazon Freevee series, Almost Paradise. Because Alex Walker, is all of those things, and those elements combined with Christian Kane’s magnificent portrayal of the character, keep us glued to our seats when we tune in to watch this series. In fact, we love what Christian has done to bring him to life… that it’s allowed for us to overlook that one key element is actually missing from his journey. Specifically… the nemesis. Because to date, Alex has swiftly defeated all comers of injustice, even the jackass that betrayed him. But since Dean Devlin and his magnificent team of writers’ respect storytelling so much, it was only a matter of time before they found a true foil to square off against Mister Walker, and it just so happened that the next episode in this franchise brought that all-important aspect of heroism to fruition. For ‘Deus Ex-Wife Machina’ (a brilliant title by the way, that also pays homage to screenwriting) brought forth the true Moriarty to this show’s Sherlock, and at first… it seemed as though it was going to be Alex’s ex-wife, Claire. For she stormed into this story and demanded that Alex sign the divorce paperwork that he had been avoiding, to make the end final. Something that had not happened yet, because there was quite the dispute over the ranch they owned. Since dissolution of the marriage would put that up for sale and Alex, had plans for that down the line. But alas, she was insistent, mainly because she was getting married to a new beau named Bob, and well… that put Alex in a difficult spot. Where it seemed future dreams were going to be sent off into the void… that is until… the real heavy showed up. Because a ruthless gangster named Jace Vargas, who loved to waterboard and torture, had busted out of prison and since Alex was the man that put him away… he wanted revenge. Which led to a harrowing and scary sequence of events. Where Bob was kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity, and where Claire and Alex had to put aside their differences and figure out how to save him. Because Alex is noble and knows that a life saved is always the right thing to do. Which brought forth some lovely moments, the kind that saw what made the Walker marriage work and how they had grown apart, and their core was definitely their kindness and their honesty and of course… eventually… through the help of a singing henchman and through Alex’s ability to best Vargas, Bob was saved… Claire was thankful and Alex got to keep the ranch and finally dissolve the marriage hanging over his head. Which meant, once again… Alex grew in this tale by closing another chapter in his life, and he did so with grace and dignity. Not to mention he dealt with the revelation that Claire was moving on with grace as well, and great heroism. But above all… Alex Walker finally has a nemesis. For Jace Vargas is clearly the man that hates Alex Walker with a passion and stands for everything he does not. For he is all about that chaos, and pain and suffering, and he doesn’t think like Alex does… he just acts on pure, motorized, instinct, and loves the rush that gives him. And undoubtedly, we will be seeing more of him later on and that’s great. Because it gives Alex regular challenges to deal with and a monster to foil via cases that we can deeply enjoy. Thanks in large part to how well the character is written and also thanks to the actor that plays him, veteran actor Dante Basco. Who absolutely nailed the landing as the heavy, and he might look shockingly familiar and with good reason. Because you have in fact, seen him before in film as Rufio in Hook. But here… he is something new, something exciting and something that is the right kind of evil for this show. One that once again, impressed with its storytelling. Since it allowed for us to finally meet Claire Walker and complete that particular cycle of the story, since we’ve already met Evelyn, and of course… you simply cannot go wrong with the introduction of a hero’s nemesis. For that is always an exciting turning point, and his arrival did bring about some epic action and adventure, and some wonderful moments for certain. The kind that made sure to not let the subject matter get too heavy and let Kai and Ernesto kick butt and take names as well, and in the end, this is another episode that leaves us beyond eager for more of this show. To see when the threat that is Jace Vargas, returns, and to enjoy more of Alex Walker’s fresh start in life. Until next time. Watch ‘Almost Paradise’

Of the many genres of storytelling out there in film, one that generates a fair bit of controversy, is found footage. For there are those out there who lament the genre and see it as a cheap and ineffective way to tell a story, one best suited for the many Blair Witch homages it’s given life to. While there are others… who see it as the perfect medium to truly capture the human condition. Since it feels akin to how we consume storytelling and experience life in this day and age and can capture intimate and powerful moments and well… while the debate still rages on, it is the folks that see its wonder that will win the day eventually. Because they’re right… it does capture something special and can truly tell a moving story and for proof… then look no further than this week’s episode of The Afterparty on Apple TV+. For this is the story that saw the footage from the weekend arrive in Danner’s inbox, and that led to a viewing party of sorts, one that Feng wanted to sit in upon. For he was worried about how the footage would make him look, which aroused suspicion of course… but instead… brought forth quite the moving and powerful story. One that did indeed showcase Feng prominently, and how badly he wanted to see his Baobing business succeed, only to have to fail before the weekend was even over. All because Edgar wanted no part in investing in it, and because he was in over his head from an investment standpoint and well… that raw truth about Feng’s personal journey, brought forth some intimate moments on camera. The kind that was presented to us in found footage style and showcased Feng the man, instead of Feng the businessman. Wherein we saw a man that was a hard worker, and talented when it came to his creation, and who was deeply afraid of failure and desperate to enjoy just one day of success, and we also came to learn… what drove that desire. Which as it turned out, related to his love of his family, especially his wife, Vivian. Whom despite her infidelity was the apple of his eye because she inspired him like no other to be more, to be someone that his children could admire, that she could admire. And that… basically absolved Feng of any suspicion and this really showcased the beauty of the found footage genre. Since having that camera there, to capture the little things and the poignant moments in Feng’s life, really did show us a different side of this man. However, as this series does every episode, it also advanced the plot and took the time grow the characters. For while Feng was baring his soul to Aniq and Danner, Vivian was finally telling her daughters the truth about her sordid past with Ulysses, at Aniq’s pressing no less. Which led to some wonderful moments that spoke to how Feng had accomplished his mission since she chose him over adventure and clearly… there had been some kind of work between the two of them on resolving the hurt that came out of the affair, and of course… we are now finally inches away from the truth about who killed Edgar. For the closing moments of this story brought forth some wild surprises. Since Danner realized that a dark conversation on the footage between mother and son, might have more relevance than it was initially given credit by Feng and his cameraman, Kyler. Mainly because… Isabel seemed eager to finally talk with Danner when confronted about that conversation, and even admitted she knew who killed her son, and that it wasn’t Grace. So, that’s nice. But either way, this is it, the truth is about to hit. But before we settle in to see how it all comes together, we can celebrate one amazing episode. One that paid proper respect to Found Footage at last, a genre that really does accomplish wonders and featured an outright acting clinic from Ken Jeong. Not to mention, the laughs were there again, since Ken also let his comedic chops fly, and this really was the perfect the way to set the stage for the season two finale. Because we needed something meaningful and beautiful, before the ugliness of murder is exposed to all. Until next time. Watch ‘The Afterparty’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Series Premiere of ‘Ahsoka’. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
It is definitely safe to say that the Star Wars Universe has entered quite the interesting phase of storytelling. For this franchise has at long last, opted to experiment with storytelling like never before, giving rise to stories that pay tribute to the westerns of old, expand upon questions we’ve always had regarding the period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and well… it’s also slowly pondering upon more adult themes. Such as what truly gives life to revolution and rebellion and as evidenced by its latest offering to the loyal fans of this franchise… what it means to grow, forgive, and reflect upon the mistakes we’ve made. For those are indeed central themes to Ahsoka. Which were put on display in the show’s two-episode series premiere in a smooth and powerful manner. All by having former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano, continue in her quest to keep the elusive and evil Grand Admiral Thrawn at bay, and well… once she discovered a potential map to his location in ‘Part One: Master and Apprentice’, did the past come into play. After all, in order to unlock the secrets of this fascinating map, one that tied deeply to greater Star Wars lore, such as the Nightsisters, Ahsoka had to find her old apprentice. The always plucky and still rebellious as ever, Sabine Wren. Which allowed for those central themes to come into play. For every fan knows, this duo split on rough terms at the end of Rebels, and that frosty nature led to some fascinating conflict here. The kind that speaks to the power of our ego, and how hard it is to let go of the more wounded parts of our past. For we hold onto that to keep ourselves strong and to drive us and guide us when it does nothing but hold us back. Which brings disaster in this tale, since old grudges and angry days gone by, allow for a mysterious Jedi and his apprentice known as Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati to obtain the map and get it into the hands of the equally as mysterious Morgan Elsbeth. Who it would seem knows exactly how to use that map and hyperdrive technology to find the admiral so they can all bring him back to the Galaxy, far, far away to wage war and restore the Empire back to its former glory. A move that forces… Sabine and Ahsoka to finally make amends and well… this is where the story shines.
Because the slow-burning nature of this premiere, allows for this duo to genuinely reflect upon their mistakes in the moment and the people they were and how all of that brought forth personal chaos and strife. And how… their desire to hold onto end results and their stubbornness allowed for that strife to persist. For neither character is really at peace or happy here, not that happiness is a thing in the SWU. But that aside, a real threat, and a real understanding of what they had as friends and as master and apprentice, helps them to grow before our eyes and come to understand that it's either this life or something more, and to get to something more… so much must be released, and trust and care and forgiveness must come into play. Which makes this premiere intelligent, and intimate and quite frankly… relatable.
Because we’ve been there, or we will be there and that just immerses us into this story like never before and the wonder of this premiere doesn’t end there. Because this two-part premiere features some massive shout outs to the magnificence of Rebels. Since we get a live-action Ezra appearance at last, and Chopper returns, as does Hera and it is just delightful to see their story continue in live action, and even see connective tissue come into play in this story. After all, Sabine’s decision to return to the fight and her training for all the right reasons leads to a beautiful bookend moment in ‘Part Two: Toil and Trouble’. One that brings a tear to one’s eye and reminds the audience of another big reason we love this saga so. Because it really does create characters we care about and want to see find some semblance of peace in a galaxy that at times, seems to be the roughest one of all. However, that aside, this premiere also does an amazing job, of giving the fans core elements of what we love. Such as the action and adventure we crave, and the humor we love, since that back and forth between Chopper and Hera was just amazing and of course… you can never go wrong with lightsaber battles, and we received those en masse here and that was just a real treat. And the same goes for the aesthetic of the show, which really captures that early 1980s look and feel about Star Wars that we just adore and what’s incredible… is that this premiere is merely a taste of things to come. After all, Thrawn is still out there, which means the classic good versus evil bones of this franchise awaits us, and it will be fascinating to see how these resurgent Rebels, stave off the next Galactic Civil War as this refreshing new series continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘Ahsoka’

Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
One incredible fear that each and every one of us harbor in life, is having someone we love deeply and want to share so much with, betray and hurt us. Because we will have given that person our heart, our everything, our very soul to help them understand we love them dearly… and the thought of having all of that thrown back in our faces is terrifying to say the least. For it will mean we’ve failed in matters in love and that we will be alone once again and working to reconcile what went wrong. But that is at its core, something we should not fear. Because oftentimes when that kind of heartbreak comes into play, we shouldn’t let it harm us as badly as we do, nor should we see it as our greatest fears come to life. For in fact… that type of surprise happens because we dated garbage really… the kind that only cared about its own toxic contents and they did in fact, do us a favor by showing us their stink. But that comprehension is of course, easier than said done, and it takes a good support network to help us see that, and sometimes… the actions of the toxic loved one help with that as well, as evidenced by the next episode of The Madame Blanc Mysteries. For when we caught up with Jean in this particular tale, she was ready to welcome an old friend and his new husband into their home. Simply because David and George wanted to see her new digs and the town and take in its wonder. But it didn’t take long for this visit… to get weird. For at every turn David found himself facing pain or strange occurrences that terrified him. In fact, at one point, David and George were held at knifepoint by a random man, only to be saved by a good Samaritan at the last possible second. All of which left David scared and outright concerned that a curse had been visited upon him. Largely because he came into the possession of a witch related antique, one that spoke to trouble. But as Caron and Jean dug deeper, with the help of Dom, who somewhat redeemed himself here by saving David when the assailant went harder than ever to cause harm… they came to discover that there wasn’t a curse present or even someone out for revenge. It was George. Who as it turned out was wanted for a string of murders. For he was true trash that basically hunted vulnerable men of a certain age, to marry them and steal their fortunes, and had it not been for our trio of heroes, and David’s ex-husband, who turned out to be the good Samaritan, David would have been another checkmark on a long list of victims. Which of course left him in the dumps until his ex and friends pointed out… this was no failure. Nor did he not love George enough… he simply was suckered in by a master of disguise and he would most certainly love again, and those words and of course… nearly being killed by his husband, helped David heal. Which was a lovely way to bring home that central theme and help anyone out there wondering if they failed when they were left behind by a lover that didn’t care enough to work at it or stay… that it wasn’t their fault. But while that alone could have carried this tale, it had more surprises to send our way. For Barbara’s long con involving Jean through Simone, took another turn in this story. For she demanded that Simone contact Charlie and get a dialogue going there. Undoubtedly to learn more about the new shop that’s opened and how to get revenge against Jean and well… the plan worked. For Charlie was moved by the carefully crafted words that Barbara wrote in the key of Simone, and they’re talking again and that sets the stage for an ugly showdown between Jean and Barbara. But while that brews, we can revel in the wonder of another refreshing episode from this series. Because this one, really did offer up a unique case for certain. Because you just don’t see the heavy/criminal take part in this kind of torture and this kind of wanton cruelty in a cozy mystery. Because such actions are a little too realistic when we want to be entertained and engaged in a lighthearted manner by a cozy mystery. But this show enjoys digging into real-world topics and relatable matters of the heart and well… there are indeed cruel people like this, out there. The kind that will indeed string the lovers of the world along to enjoy spoils untold and cause harm because they can. All of which just serves to remind us of the brilliance of this series, and of course… this episode leaves us eager for more. To see what will come from Barbara’s icky plans for Jean and to of course… see what other surprising stories await us. Until next time. Watch ‘The Madame Blanc Mysteries’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Black Snow’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
When we last settled in to discuss the wondrous and fascinating AMC and Sundance Now series, Black Snow, it seemed as though Detective James Cormack was on the verge of a breakthrough. For he had uncovered the truth about who was driving the blue car that was constantly tailing Isabel through the streets of her hometown, and that her father, the pastor, was involved in this somehow. Which should have brought forth… a bevy of truths about that fateful night, such as who killed Isabel. But alas, for its next episode, this series opted to enact more realism regarding this case. In that, sometimes the truth or having enough evidence to move the case along, means nothing when people are still unwilling to participate in matters of justice. For ‘The Lost Boys’ saw James and Hazel confront Joe about his involvement in the case and his knowledge, only to be stonewalled again. For he truly believed that the covenant between a pastor and those who confided in him to be sacred, where those truths would be carried to Heaven. Which left James with no choice but to try a vastly different strategy to get the case moving, while Hazel, worked to try and help her father understand the importance of this moment, and this case. Which shockingly, prompted him to open up to his daughter at least, and inform her of the fact that Ezekial had harmed someone else on that night, and that he was indeed with Joe when the murder occurred, and the reason suspicion existed around Ezekial, related to the fact that Pastor Joe told him to run after everything went down… since he knew better and knew what people were capable of. Which absolved the pastor of wrongdoing… and that’s not a bad thing. Because this episode also made it clear, there are other suspects present in this town. A truth revealed courtesy of some hard pressure on James’ part. For he inquired often about the missing cousins that Isabel was helping Ezekial search for, and he made sure to visit anyone else on his interview list, including Billy… to apply pressure and open old wounds and just make everyone concerned that he was inching toward truth and well… that brought about some interesting revelations in this story. Such as the fact that Billy knows more than he has led on, and he had no idea what to do with his knowledge. Because on the one hand, he wanted it to help him land a hell of a payday by blackmailing Steve. But also, it was clear here that such knowledge was eating at him, and the pressure made it worse and motivated him to try and talk to James, to no avail since James was out and about in that moment. But what mattered most was that the pressure worked, and he wasn’t alone in that. Because we spent a fair chunk of time with Hector in this story as well, and he was not in a healthy place mentally. For he partook often in this story to seemingly numb something ominous, and he even had a run in with Billy that was violent and scary, and that was because… he was hiding an ugly secret that he was clearly worried would come to light. For he had in his possession, Isabel’s necklace. The very one she wore on that fateful night, the very one that James also noticed had gone missing at some point. Which raises all of kinds of questions about Hector and makes him begin to look akin to a prime suspect. All because of James’ unique approach to the case. But alas, it would seem we will have to wait a little bit before more comes out of these surprises. After all, Kalana was once again eager to send a message about the sorted past of her nation by spray painting that statue once again. An act that was observed this time and may have led to hurt and harm, since an ‘accident’ pulled James away from his hotel room and his father related funk at the end of this tale. But while we wait to learn if Kalana is okay, we can revel in another fascinating chapter in this case. One that truly did reveal that pressure and time are starting to have an impact on the secrets being kept in this town. Since slowly but surely, they are beginning to come to the surface at last, and if James can keep it up and keep people nipping at one another through his actions… the truth at last about Isabel’s end may come to light, and someone will finally face justice, and it won’t be long now before those truths come to light, since we are now in the endgame of this unique and dynamic series. Until next time. Watch ‘Black Snow’
