It has been quite the interesting year for television shows. In that, we are seeing a lot of shows enter the end game for their story across multiple networks. Some shows are of course, wrapping their story up quickly after only a handful of seasons, to properly tell their story and end on their own terms while others… are grand franchises that are finally preparing to say goodbye after years of entertaining us through and through and it just so happens, that the latter of those two types of endings is the focus of our discussion today. Simply because a beloved and long running franchise is about to bid farewell to the airwaves after decades of entertaining audiences.
For Monday will bring forth the first two episodes of the final season of the highly acclaimed and loved show, Doc Martin. Yes, you read that right… the time has finally come for this series to close out and give Martin the closure we’re not sure he or the audience ever really wanted. But all good things must indeed come to their end whether we like it or not and well, we here at NTG had the distinct honor of receiving some early access to the final season of this series and we thought it would be worthwhile today to spend a little time previewing what you can expect from Doctor Martin Ellingham’s farewell tour, in a spoiler-free manner of course. Because it would be mean to reveal all the surprises, but what we can tell you… is that the writing and the character development in this final season… are simply top notch. Since Martin’s big decision from the prior season, the one revolving around his status as a doctor, is indeed addressed here in a manner that is supremely powerful and dynamic. Which will finally allow for Martin to understand the course of his life and who and what want he wants to be professionally, and personally. Which makes for some incredible moments revolving around Martin, the kind that engage us like never before as we see him grow and learn before our eyes and the best part is, the wonder of this final season goes beyond incredible writing and growth. For in the midst of taking the time to explore corners of Martin’s psyche that we’ve never really delved into before, the show makes a point to stay true to its roots. Which means once again we spend a fair chunk of time with the good people of Portwenn and explore their lives and their needs, which allows for delightful breaks from the heavier moments that Martin is dealing with and of course… the comedic chops of this series haven’t dulled in the slightest. Since there are plenty of perfectly timed jokes and quirky moments for us to enjoy, which keeps the viewer comfortable and in familiar territory and that… oddly helps one to reconcile the reality that the end is nigh for this series. Because it just feels as though we are dealing with business as usual, and that’s probably a good thing. So that we don’t find ourselves tearing up over the fact that the end awaits us, we can just kick back and enjoy a show we love while watching Martin tackle new challenges, the kind that the cast sell incredibly well here, with Martin Clunes of course, leading the charge, and he also turns in some of his finest work as an actor. Likely because he too knows that the audience deserves a show’s absolute best when it bids farewell, and the best news of all… is we don’t have to wait that much longer to enjoy one last adventure with this iconic character. For the final season of Doc Martin gets underway on Monday, October 17, 2022, on Acorn TV, and we can’t wait to for you to enjoy the beginning of Martin’s long and winding goodbye. As an added bonus, please enjoy the final trailer for the final season of 'Doc Martin'.
