The Denver Marriott Tech Center has a reputation for being my personal favorite hotel to host conventions. And this year, they hosted Anomaly Con! Prior to this weekend, I have never been to Anomaly, but I have heard of it. Once held at the Tivoli at Metropolitan State College of Denver; Anomaly is a a relatively new convention to the Colorado con scene. The beauty of growing is being able to move. I had no idea what I was really expecting when I heard about this con. All I really knew was that it was supposedly primarily Steampunk. Never believe everything you hear from the grapevine though. Because this convention is more than just Steampunk. It is quite accepting of all genres with a plethora of costumes that ranged vastly. Surprisingly, there were some Doctor Who cosplayers, bringing to life the earlier incarnations of our favorite Timelord. Of course it was a con, with cosplay, so of course Mattie and I had to dress up (totally her idea and there was absolutely no pressure from me to do so.) and that's exactly what we did! Neither of us had anything Steampunk related, but we do always have some costumes on hand. With our Supernatural costumes on, we hit the con and weren't disappointed by what we saw. The dresses and costumes people were wearing were utterly astonishing. The craftsmanship that goes into the amount of detail a lot of these people put into their cosplays was utterly amazing. The costume contest featured many of these wonderful people, two of whom I actually knew personally! Everyone was fun to talk to and this con had that really nice family feel to it that we have all come to love about conventions. Of course, costumes were not the only thing about the convention that were amazing. The Dealers Room was pretty sweet! There were plenty of vendors with a lot of really cool stuff. We ended up getting Meg and Mattie pins! I regret not buying anything, but I had fun nonetheless. Artist Alley was where it was at. Authors, artists, and craftsmen had the most unique original work I've ever seen! One of the artists, the amazing Robert Elrod, was kind enough to talk with us for some time. Everyone was kind and the arts of their trade were equally stunning and amazing. There were also panels for all types of interests! Many of which continued on into the late evening. This convention, for my first time going, was memorable and I had so much fun. I hope this con continues to grow and spread its awesomeness.

Written by John Edward BetancourtSpring has officially arrived at last and with the (somewhat) nicer weather comes with it the wonder of convention season. Many a hotel has opened its doors to welcome fandom after fandom in to celebrate their favorite genres and reunite with old friends and this weekend is no exception as Anomaly Con kicks off later today. For those who have not yet had an opportunity to attend this convention, well first and foremost, now is your chance, especially if you are a fan of all things steampunk. Yes, that is Anomaly Con's specialty niche, the chance for everyone who wants to break out their incredible 19th Century duds and celebrate an era that they have never had the chance to with others. Or perhaps you're simply in love with the look and concept of modern day technology designed to look as though it comes from an era gone by. Of course, Anomaly Can has plenty more to offer than just steampunk in the convention universe as it also celebrates the wonder of science fiction and alternative history and there is plenty of programming for everyone. You'll find everything from Doctor Who trivia to tea dueling to concerts, and that's on today's schedule alone! Expect more incredible variety of entertainment all weekend long. In fact Anomaly Con will be holding many a contest for attendees this year, including A LEGO Contest, Costume Contest, Mixed Drink Contest and even a Mustache Contest. Either way you can expect plenty of fun at Anomaly Con. We had the opportunity to cover it last year and it was absolutely a good time. So by all means, swing by the Denver Marriott Tech Center off of I-25 and Belleview and settle in to enjoy the festivities. If you've already snagged your tickets, pre registration starts at one p.m. today and regular registration kicks off at two, prices for the weekend at the door are $35 for a three day pass or you can buy single day passes as well. For a single Friday or Saturday ticket, the price is $15. A single Saturday pass is $20. Kids under 8 will attend for free and children 8-13 can get in for half price with a paying adult. It should be another fun weekend for what is now the fourth year for this convention and we hope to see all of you there! Written by John Edward BetancourtThere's something to be said for the shows we love. They not only inspire us, and drive us but they are also a fantastic gateway to drawing us to new forms of entertainment, often times because of the cast. We fall in love with our favorite stars and they bring us along for the ride. One such television show that did that for me was Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was always impressed with the cast and where ever they went I was quick to follow. Lo and behold, I made sure to follow Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis when it was announced that they would be joining an animated television show known as Gargoyles and not only did they impress, but so did the show. Having two TNG cast members was more than a gimmick, they were part of a rich tapestry being made before our eyes. Gargoyles was a whip smart television show, ahead of its time and gone from the airwaves quicker than the fans would have liked. So leave it to the amazing Denver Comic Con to let us reminisce about this awesome program by bringing about a 20th Anniversary Reunion! That's right, Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman returns to Denver Comic Con for his second straight year and he will be joined in this reunion by two of the cast members; Salli Richardson-Whitfield who voiced Elisa Maza and Thom Adcox-Hernandez who voiced Lexington. It should make for an incredible reunion, especially when you look at the rich careers of the three names mentioned above. Greg is now the Executive Producer of the upcoming Star Wars: Rebels and his first novel Rain of the Ghosts was released last December. Salli of course played Dr. Allison Blake in Syfy's Eureka and has appeared in some pretty epic motion pictures. She was in I Am Legend with Will Smith and Antwone Fisher with Denzel Washington. Thom is also well known for his voice work in The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat and Young Justice: Legacy. If you need a face to go with the name, you can see his live action work in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. This is an incredible lineup for such a beloved show, but as always, Denver Comic Con isn't done yet. After all? what's one good reunion without another panel filled with the original stars? Yes, in addition to bringing one incredible cast together, DCC is also bringing together the cast of an incredibly beloved video game franchise; Mass Effect. Raphael Sbarge, Mark Meer & Kimberly Brooks will all take the stage at DCC this June. For those who may not have played the game but the names sound familiar they should. Raphael not only played Kaidan Alenko in Mass Effect & Mass Effect 2, he also played Carth Onasi in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic & Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Mark played Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series and you can also hear his voice in the Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age series as well. Kimberly voiced Ashley Williams in Mass Effect and you would also recognize her voice from Batman: Arkham Asylum & Batman: Arkham City. All in all, these are some incredible announcements from Denver Comic Con. It definitely leaves you wondering what other incredible guests they have up their sleeve and I can't wait to see what else is around the corner. June cannot come soon enough! Written by John Edward BetancourtIf there is one thing that Denver Comic Con likes to do on a Saturday morning, is to make all of our days better with an incredible guest announcement and this Saturday morning is no exception. In fact this convention continues to prove time and time again that even though it is in its third year, it brings in the big names as well as any other convention out there. Today they started our day off on an incredible note, as they announced one of the biggest sci fi actors out there, Karl Urban, will be attending Denver Comic Con in June. Yes, you read that right. I had to take few minutes along with the staff to make sure I was seeing this correctly. In fact, Mattie and Shae are still in their offices, giggling and possibly crying with glee over the fact that Karl is coming to DCC. For those of you somehow unfamiliar with his work, Karl is pretty much everywhere right now. He just wrapped up his first season playing Detective John Kennex on Fox's Almost Human. He played Éomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. He did an incredible job playing Judge Dredd in the 2012 reboot Dredd and of course he is well known now for his portrayal of Leonard "Bones" McCoy in J.J. Abrams' relaunch of the Star Trek franchise. In fact, his incredible spot on portrayal of Bones is one of the reasons I love the new Trek films because it takes a special actor to follow in the footsteps of DeForest Kelley, especially since Mister Kelley played that part with a unique flair that so far, only Karl has matched. He is hands down, an incredible addition to Denver Comic Con 2014 and I can't wait to see Karl and all of you there! Written by John Edward BetancourtIt's no secret that this year is the 75th anniversary of the Caped Crusader. Yes the Batman has been rescuing Gotham for that long and to celebrate this incredible occasion, Denver Comic Con has out done themselves again. Ladies and gents DCC just announced an incredible lineup of Batman Guests for this year. Who exactly will be in attendance? Well before we riddle you that we ask that you take a moment and sit down because I'm not joking when I say these guests are epic and will leave you feeling lightheaded. THE DYNAMIC DUO - ADAM WEST & BURT WARD Holy Reunion Batman! Not only did Denver Comic Con land the iconic Adam West but he will reunite with Robin himself, Burt Ward. For those unfamiliar with Mister West outside of Batman, you can find him all over the place in film and television but he is best known from The Detectives, The Last Precinct, and of course he just happens to play Mayor Adam West on Family Guy. As for Mister Ward, after hanging up his cape and tights he went on develop Early Bird Learning, an education charity program that promotes social values, good health, safety, and critical thinking skills. These two are an incredible addition to Denver Comic Con and this is a panel that we all know will be worth taking the time to attend. THE CATWOMAN - JULIE NEWMAR What good is a pair of heroes though without a villain? Well don't worry DCC has us covered by bringing in the original Catwoman, Julie Newmar. But her career goes beyond saucers of milk and bank heists. Julie also won a Tony award for The Marriage-Go-Round and you've likely seen her in The Twilight Zone as well. THE VOICE - KEVIN CONROY There are many of us out there who have only one Batman in mind when we think of the character. He is the Dark Knight we rushed home from school to see on weekday afternoons, and yet we only truly knew him by his voice. Kevin Conroy, the voice behind the Bat in Batman: The Animated series will also be attending Denver Comic Con this year. In fact Kevin's voice is so synonymous with the character he has gone on to play him numerous times in The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. |
