Written by John Edward Betancourt Once a convention’s programming schedule is released, there are rarely changes to it. Simply because it took hours upon hours to bring the programming schedule to fruition in the first place and by having it set in stone, the convention staff can turn their attention to other matters for the big event. But not all conventions are created equal, and some… understand that their unique programming can be enhanced and tinkered with and added to. Allowing for the attendees to really get their money’s worth and for the con in question… to really establish itself as the premier gathering for the topic at hand, and one such con that meets those criteria, is SeriesFest. For this celebration of television is only getting bigger in scope as SeriesFest 8 approaches. For earlier today, SeriesFest announced that it is adding more special events, and screenings and panels for SeriesFest 8. Making it clear that this is going to be an event worth everyone’s time, one that truly celebrates the wonder of episodic television, and without further ado… here are those additions, and a link to the complete schedule, courtesy of SeriesFest. Written by Shae Rufe This last weekend, Colorado was home to a brand-new convention that took place in Loveland, and it was amazing. Wicked West Comic Expo debuted with a bang and reignited my love of conventions all over again. I think it’s safe to say that the last few years have been quite a struggle for a lot of us. Wicked West Comic Expo could not have come at a better time. The much-needed gathering was such a wonderful reprieve and shone like a true reminder that there is indeed hope. Meeting with old and new friends felt as though no time had passed at all, and better yet the convention was filled with fun to be had in every corner. The all-important Dealers room was filled with local artists, whose talents have been greatly missed over the past few years. Of course, there were pins and plushies abound, but most importantly the hoodies and comics! Perhaps my favorite moment was catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in some time, only seconded by my first post-pandemic convention purchase. Yes, it’s hard to replace the rush of finding the perfect item at a con. Mine happened to be two Nightmare Before Christmas comics (from Dan Conner) featuring my all-time favorite character, Zero. I’m a sucker for adorable animals, and ghost dogs are somehow the best. The number of local artists was absolutely amazing. It was such a warm welcome back into the world of conventions. The intimate atmosphere made the whole thing feel safe, warm, and inviting. Like visiting an old friend who's moved away. Wicked West Comic Expo also had wonderful panels to attend. Let’s be honest, the second-best part of a convention is the panels. A wide selection offered for a fun filled scheduled day of interesting panels hosted by only the best experts around. This really is always one of my favorite parts. To have people stand and talk about a passion they share is always such a great experience. It’s also one of the things that’s always drawn me to conventions. Having a shared passion and being able to express that in a safe environment. Plus, I always learn something new from a panel. The one addition Wicked West Comic Expo did that I think all conventions really should do, was incorporate a cosplay backdrop area. They had a lot of scenes set up where anyone could go and take pictures with the backgrounds. Like Han Solo frozen with R2-D2, and the Star Trek Transporter Pad. It was such a fun addition that really did add that extra something special to the convention. Sadly, I didn’t cosplay or stop to get my picture at one of these scenes, but I really wish I had! Seeing R2 always brings the kid out in me, and I try to get my picture with him as often as possible at a convention. My only complaint is that the weekend is over, and with that so is Wicked West Comic Expo. My hope is that this con is here to stay, and that 2023 brings us together again. This home-grown convention is genuinely my favorite and was such a blast to be at. I couldn’t think of a better place to spend a weekend. |
