Crime dramas on television… tend to quickly move on when they’ve completed a particular story arc. To the point where what happened in said arc, is rarely mentioned ever again and so many characters from that same arc just… disappear… and move on with their fictional lives and it makes sense as to why this is the case. For the story in question has been told and there’s no point in going backwards. So, it’s best to move on, enjoy new adventures and see where the story takes us. But now and again, you run into a series that refuses to let that happen, that is eager to offer up that real world feeling of consequences and the interconnected nature of our world, and the past, and one particular series that features that to a tee, is The Tower on BritBox. For the second season of this show made its debut on the network yesterday and well… The Tower 2: Death Message made it clear that everything that happened in season one will not be forgotten. After fooling us that is. For when we returned to this harrowing universe in the season two premiere, time had passed. In fact, several months have gone by since the whole mess with PC Adama was resolved in a messy and shady manner, and well… normalcy was returning to the force. For Adama was reinstated by the board, Shaw was back behind a desk, doing his thing and keeping a low profile after his actions in season one. And of course, DS Sarah Collins finally arrived in Homicide to zero pomp and circumstance since this was a different world and this was precisely where the story fooled us. Because Sarah was assigned to a cold case that had a new lead, while Adama was handling a domestic violence case that greatly concerned her. All of which made it seem as though we were truly moving on and moving forward. After all, Adama came to learn the finer points of how regular case work is handled in the field and how tough her job can be sometimes since the suspect in this case used every trick in the book to get out of jail in the belief that he was innocent, and we also came to learn exactly what Sarah’s skill set would look like in the field, and it was just as impressive as her work in her prior department. Since she was able to see things that no one would else did in the original case and that allowed for her to make some progress at last, in an uncomfortable manner, thanks to a sexual offender, but it was progress, nevertheless. But eventually… worlds began to collide. For Steve also transferred to Homicide and impressed with his own skill set, and quite the horrific moment took place in this tale to bring everyone back together. In that, the abuser in question… finally crossed the line despite declaring his ‘love’ for the woman he consistently physically harmed. Which meant that Adama and Collins are about to cross paths again on a critical case. One where they must now put aside differences and concerns to bring a violent murderer to justice and that is… a powerful way to tie together two seasons of storytelling. Since it forces the past to not go away and brings forth consequences both big and small for past transgressions and leaves all of us wondering… whether or not these folks can work together in the name of something greater or if selfish decisions will derail this case. But while we wait to see what comes of that, we can revel in one quality premiere. One that also featured other echoes of the past to haunt Shaw and Adama via the fact that the Tower still hovers over them and reminds them of their choices… and it truly let the characters shine in a different manner in this tale. For there was no central crisis that everyone was focused on, and that provided them with time to grow and that made for an engaging story, one that is once again tackling some very real-world topics. Since domestic violence and abuse is another taboo topic no one likes to talk about, but we need to, because it is happening right now, somewhere, and of course… we don’t discuss what happens to officers that go back to work after they have taken part in shady acts and escaped accountability and that too will be explored here. And truly everything we experienced here… has us eager to continue to the journey. To see if the monsters introduced here will be held accountable and to see what lessons and commentary await us as this saga continues along. Until next time.
