Most stories that deal in grand mysteries, tend to offer the audience hope, and the understanding of that the mystery is going to be resolved in a complete or happy manner, depending on the nature of the mystery and it makes sense as to why. Because no one likes leaving unfinished business on the table, much less storytellers, and because… we don’t like the idea of mysteries ending on a sour note. Because there’s something unwholesome about waiting gently for a mystery to be solved, only to have it horrify us further. So, since these stories are designed to help us escape… they mostly follow that edict. But now and again, you run into a tale that offers the opposite of that and deepens the mystery and sends it down a dark path. Simply because, the story calls for it and when done right, it won’t unsettle or chase off an audience, it will engage them and prompt them to finish the journey to see just how far down the rabbit hole the story is going to go and one such series that meets such criteria, is The Consultant on Prime Video. For this series immediately made us curious about Regus Patoff and his purpose and desires in taking over CompWare. Plus, his strange behavior, the kind that speaks to a man that cares but also has something sinister up his sleeve, is what brings forth the morbid curiosity in question that has compelled us to go this far and well, the next episode in this fascinating saga took the time to indeed offer up a dark nugget of truth that will compel us to continue this equally as dark journey. For ‘Friday’ is a story that informed us that Patoff is indeed dangerous and will resort to horrible acts to engage his staff and try to engender a sense of loyalty and it brought those truths forth… by having Craig receive quite the wild request. For on Friday night, when it seemed a relaxing weekend was ahead, one that he and Patti would use to build upon their love… Patoff decided to invite himself along to the end of the week beer that Craig wanted to enjoy. Which… seemed harmless enough at the time, since Patoff had in fact respected Craig and his work, to the point where perhaps a moment of friendship and camaraderie was warranted. But Patoff’s odd request to try and engage in violence with Craig and the decision to take Craig to another watering hole, brought about the concerning lessons in question. Because it didn’t take long for stop number two, to transform Craig’s night from one of fun to one of terror. For Patoff had a living and breathing person thrown into his car as part of an ‘errand’ he invited Craig along for. All in the hopes of having Craig help him, harm this person for reasons that were foolish in nature and that… put Craig in a tough place. Since Patoff was constantly egging him on to support him and help him, and he hinted and later confirmed this was some kind of screwed up loyalty test. One that Craig was relived to fail since he didn’t have in him to remotely cause harm in this manner. But what mattered more about this sequence, is that it was proof positive that the boss is unhinged and eager to push people to their limits and now that he is showing his true colors, many questions about what comes next remain. Such as… will Craig walk away and ask Elaine to come with him, now that he is aware of the danger and in a way, so is Elaine. For she did dig into the strange records room that Patoff has assembled to keep tabs on the staff. And of course… we are all wondering more about the name dropped here, the one that could stop this madman. But the big question that remains is… will we learn more about Patoff and what brought him here and what his purpose is? Which it would seem will be the case. Because this story, one that indeed demands more of us despite the horrifying nature of Regus Patoff, is starting to tip its cap and inform us of what kind of a man Patoff is and well… the only way to know for certain what he’s about… is to continue the journey post haste and buckle up in doing so. Because clearly, things are going to get worse and weirder, before they get better. Until next time.
