It truly is quite amazing, what the Apple TV+ series, Hello Tomorrow! is accomplishing from a storytelling standpoint. For this is that rare series that doesn’t want to just focus on a topic of the week. It wants to do a powerful and intimate exploration of its topics, in a manner that will take multiple episodes to bring said exploration to its logical conclusion and that’s led to some incredible episodes. Wherein we’ve come to learn the genesis of how a lie collapses, and also… what motivates a person to put together a grand lie in the first place, and what kind of chaos can ensue when the lie begins to crumble. For ‘Another Day, Another Apocalypse’ is a story that saw… the walls start to come crumbling down. In large part thanks to the fact that Buck Manzell was riled up enough to escape the retirement home, and left unattended and in full-on fantasy mode, Buck scared off investors. Since Jack did nearly seal the super big deal, one that would have allowed for Brightside to become real since he still wanted that… only to have questions arise as Buck ran around town, beating the ever-living hell out of robots. Forcing Jack and Shirl to head out to try and find him before the company’s cover was truly blown. A move that also managed to reveal that Jack is the mastermind here and well, this definitely brought forth a fine lesson on what happens when the lie begins to crumble. Since now we know that the liar will try and keep the lie together, and under duress… that’s no easy task. Not to mention, there’s serious fallout that comes with the crumbling of a lie. Because someone associated with the lie, endured serious emotional pain because of it, and there’s no easy path to healing with that. As evidenced by Joey’s journey in this tale. Because he was in a dark place here. Since the bill was due on his mother’s long-term care and he couldn’t face himself in the mirror for being duped and for eagerly following Jack’s desires to make the sale over anything else, much less make amends or find a clear path forward. Which prompted him to quit the firm and just… reflect on his life and his choices. Making it clear just how damaging a big lie can be, and how hard they are to repair, since the attempts Jack made to smooth things over here by paying for all that much needed medical care, seemed to have little positive impact on Joey’s mental health. Plus, in this particular instance, the collapse of the lie and the sense of being ripped off… will bring forth fury from a consumer standpoint. Because Myrtle wanted to be made whole and she was so furious about the lie… that stole the customer information ledger and made a ton of phone calls. The kind that exposed the truth and put fear into the hearts of everyone that purchased a unit and they of course… showed up expecting a refund. Which put Herb in a tough place because he was the only person on staff with Eddie out of commission due to his depressed state and with Jack and Shirl out there searching for Buck. So, he did his best, and failed, and needed an assist from his wife and Eddie’s nest egg to give the people a moment of peace amidst understandable emotional conflict. All of which informed us, that when a carefully formed lie does begin to falter from a façade standpoint, all hell breaks loose. Which can be scary, heartbreaking, and life changing, and will lead to some new challenges for Jack. Because it is up to him now to put the genie back in the proverbial bottle and there’s a good chance, he will fail and will instead, have to find a way to own up to this devastating plot. Because so many are angry, and broken, and dejected, and the control he thought he had over this is gone and well… now that chaos reigns… it will be genuinely interesting to see what happens next, and what the aftermath of this mess will be, as this brilliant season of storytelling continues along. Until next time.
