It’s that time of the year again, where the Television Critics Association gathers in Los Angeles to get a good long look at what the networks have on the horizon. Which brings forth announcements and trailers, and news untold, and we here at NTG have some of that news to share with you. For STARZ made a bevy of summer 2024 announcements at the TCA Press Tour today, and we are here to share all of them with you, so you can begin to plan ahead for some incredible viewing experiences. ‘Sweetpea’, A Darkly Comic ‘Coming of Rage’ Series to Debut on STARZ in 2024 STARZ has acquired the U.S. and Canada rights to the deviously twisted coming-of-‘rage’ story “Sweetpea,” starring Ella Purnell (“Yellowjackets,” “Fallout,” “Sweetbitter”) who will also serve as executive producer. Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. “Sweetpea” is produced by See-Saw Films and fanboy in association with Sky Studios. The six-part series was acquired directly from Sky Studios and is set to debut in 2024 as a STARZ original in the U.S. and Canada. “We’re excited to partner again with Ella Purnell and Sky Studios on such a fresh, boundary-breaking story,” said Alison Hoffman, President of Domestic Networks, STARZ. “This darkly-comedic tale of revenge is sure to thrill viewers, as is Ella’s performance as a woman who finds her voice and claims her agency in ways that are devious and shocking.” Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression - people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret? The ensemble cast includes Nicôle Lecky (“Mood,” “Sense8”) as Julia, Jon Pointing (Big Boys, Smothered) as Craig, Calam Lynch (“Bridgerton”) as AJ, Leah Harvey (“Foundation”) as Marina. Also starring Jeremy Swift (“Ted Lasso”) as Norman and Dustin Demri-Burns (“Slow Horses”) as Jeff. The series is adapted from C.J. Skuse’s cult novel of the same name by writer and Executive Producer Kirstie Swain (Pure), alongside Krissie Ducker (“Killing Eve”), Laura Jayne Tunbridge and Selina Lim (Sex Education, Hanna). The series is directed by award-winning director Ella Jones (The Baby, Back To Life), who also serves as Executive Producer. Sweetpea is produced by See-Saw Films and fanboy in association with Sky Studios. The series was originally commissioned by Sky Studios for Sky across Europe. Tenika Davis (“Jupiter’s Legacy,” Cabinet of Curiosities) also joins the cast as the first female gladiator in the “Spartacus” universe, a fierce warrior driven to surpass her male counterparts and earn her freedom. Jamaica Vaughan (“Home and Away,” “800 Words”), Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth, “The Shannara Chronicles”), Jordi Webber (Choose Love, Prosper), Claudia Black (“The Nevers,” “Ahsoka”), India Shaw-Smith (The Pines Still Whisper, “Supernatural”) and Leigh Gill (Joker, “Game of Thrones”) will also join Nick Tarabay (“Spartacus,” “The Expanse”) in the epic new saga as series regulars. Production has begun in New Zealand. Graham McTavish plays “Korris,” a former gladiator who won his freedom in the arena and is now Ashur’s Doctore, training the gladiators in Ashur’s Ludus. Tenika Davis plays “Achillia,” a female gladiator driven to surpass her male counterparts. Jamaica Vaughan plays “Hilara,” a young, elevated house slave, deeply in love with Ashur. The series poses the question: what if Ashur, played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of “Spartacus: Vengeance?” And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion? “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” debuted on STARZ in 2010 and was followed by a prequel series chapter “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” in 2011 and two additional series “Spartacus: Vengeance” in 2012 and “Spartacus: War of the Damned” in 2013. “Spartacus” creator, writer and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight (“Daredevil”) serves as showrunner and executive producer. “Spartacus: House of Ashur” is produced by Lionsgate Television for STARZ. There was a time in the entertainment world where we learned about what made celebrities tick through a handful of ways. Such as say, an in-depth exclusive interview through the networks or magazines or through the tabloids. Although, the latter was (and remains) far less reliable for such matters. But that was simply how we learned about the life and times of beloved celebrities back then, and people were eager to watch those interviews or read those exclusives because celebrities and their lives fascinate us and that’s why the modern era of entertainment is so downright incredible. Because technology has removed that lack of access, and we can now communicate with celebrities and learn more about them through social media and there are now shows… that let us into their lives in an intimate manner.
In fact, Freeform is about to be home to one such show. For on July 24th, Wayne Brady: The Family Remix, will arrive on the network, giving us incredible access to Wayne’s life and his family’s life in a manner that we will not be able to resist. Because this is what the audience wants and clearly, Wayne is eager to welcome us into his home and well, as we inch closer to the premiere date of what will be a fascinating show… Freeform was kind enough to really give us an idea of how all-access this show is going to be. For they recently released a trailer for the series that really does showcase the raw honesty of this show, and we will share that trailer with you now. For you are undoubtedly ready to dive into the Brady family’s life and all it has to offer, and this, and some series details will help to prepare you for the incredible journey with the Brady family, that lies ahead. “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” will premiere on Freeform on Wednesday, July 24, at 10:00 p.m. EDT, next day on Hulu. ‘Everyone knows Wayne Brady — actor, comedian, host, singer and preeminent multihyphenate of this generation — but there’s more to the man seen onstage. What happens when such an iconic entertainer peels back the curtain on the realities of an unexpected life? In “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix,” Brady has turned the term “modern family” on its head. He’s still best friends with his ex-wife, soulmate and business partner, Mandie Taketa. Together, they co-parent their 21-year-old daughter, student and aspiring artist Maile Brady, as well as run their production company, A Wayne & Mandie Creative (“Wayne Brady’s Comedy IQ”). Jason Michael Fordham, Mandie’s life partner since 2009, handles the family’s cinematography and post-production, and Mandie and Jason have an almost 3-year-old son, Sundance-Isamu. With Brady at a sudden crossroads in his life, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” offers an intimate look into his blended family’s personal life, revealing unexpected points of view and values that most people (including his own family) have a hard time understanding. People see their social media posts — from vacations to dancing in TikToks — but what’s behind the joyful 15 seconds of fun? Their real life is not always as easy and as simple as it seems. “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” is a production of Fremantle and A Wayne & Mandie Creative.’ Written by John Edward Betancourt The final season of a television show is one that always induces anxiety in its fan base, and with good reason. After all, history has not been kind to those final seasons, and so many fans have had to sit through farewell tours that underwhelm with a story that just doesn’t do ‘goodbye’ justice. Or the show goes in a vastly different direction in its final year to try and impress, or it just straight up disappoints and offers up a heartbreaking and disappointing series finale that creates infamy for a legacy of a show, and well… that anxiety is undoubtedly surrounding fans of the hit series, Snowpiercer, right now. After all, the fourth and final season draws near, and the show was rescued at the eleventh hour by AMC Networks after its host network cancelled it. Which absolutely has brought forth that concern. For on one wants this show to lose its amazing vibe or suddenly move in a different direction that doesn’t match what made it so lovely and so engaging in the first place, by moving to a new network, and well… because of those worries and the anticipation surrounding more of this beloved show… we here at NTG thought it would be worthwhile to discuss the fourth and final season of this show, in a spoiler-free manner of course. To assuage those concerns and any worry that might be out there. Because you see, the goodbye voyage of the Snowpiercer is nothing short of outstanding. Courtesy of several elements. For starters, it’s obvious that AMC didn’t step in and demand changes or a new direction. They let the team finish their vison and in doing so, the story is bigger and bolder than it’s ever been before, and that’s saying something. Because from day one, we were already immersed within an incredible story that took our breath away with its scope. But here, the story is taken to the Nth degree. Courtesy of writing that wastes not a single second and features all kinds of twist and turns, and epic surprises, and the wonder of this final season, doesn’t just end with big moments that stun you and leave you eager to see how they will be resolved. For this is also a season of storytelling, that builds toward something larger from the get-go. As though there is the understanding that this is the end, and that now is the time to take risks and take the story to new heights and new palces, and the payoff is huge in that regard. Since it allows for stunning tension to take place, and relates to those aforementioned surprises, and yet, there are still more reasons to celebrate this final season. Simply because, the cast is at their absolute best here, and sell every moment with a gravity that just pulls us further into this final season. One that will leave you on the edge of your set and leave you eager for more. Courtesy of the fact that this really is the best season of the show, and it does this world that has been so carefully built, justice. Which means that fans are in for a real treat, and a farewell season that will satisfy for certain, and the best news of all, is that we are so very, very close to returning to this world once again. For the fourth and final season premiere of Snowpiercer will premiere exclusively on AMC on Sunday, July 21 at 9pm ET/PT and will be available to stream on AMC+ the same day, and we here at NTG cannot wait to share in the wonder of this final season with all of you, as we all enjoy an incredible farewell season to a quality and beloved series. For the most part, crime dramas tend to offer one or two major cases for the hero or heroes to solve, and it makes sense as to why. For going that route allows for a detailed case to come into play, and powerful emotional beats and moments of growth for the characters. Plus, it can create a massive buildup for the season finale. Wherein the heroes can solve the primary case in an epic and satisfying manner before we move onto a new one, next season. Which is why the MHz Choice series, Babylon Berlin is such the storytelling outlier. Simply because… it is packed to the brim with cases every season, giving rise to juicy plot threads for the show to showcase often. Of course, season four is no exception to that rule. After all, the next block of episodes in this journey featured so many cases and troubles brewing about in Berlin. Such as the fact that Mr. Nyssen found himself in a tough place in these tales. For his wife and his mother were kidnapped by Mr. Gold, all because of that damn necklace. Which went missing here and complicated life for Nyssen, leaving all of us to wonder how he will get out of this mess with the necklace simply vanishing into thin air. But this did indeed speak to all the trouble brewing in Berlin at this point in time, and the trouble and multiple cases didn’t end there. After all, the gambling madness only accelerated in this tale. For whomever is trying to disrupt that took down one of the biggest players in the market in a brutal manner to send another dark message of fear, one compounded by an assassination attempt as well. One that has the underworld reeling and wondering what their next moves will be. Plus, we also saw grave injustice take place in this story. Since the explosive trial of the century… ended up being nothing more than a puff of smoke. For guilt was quickly decided and the punishments were pushed through, and to complicate matters further, those all-important negatives made it out into the world and into hands that can hold people accountable over their leak. All of which spoke to just pure chaos in the city. The kind that undoubtedly added to the calls for law and order in a few years when darkness befell the land. But alas, not all was lost in this tale. For this is also a story that saw Charlotte and Gereon reconcile at last. For she was made privy to what was really going on, and she of course… still had much to say about the police force and why she was fine with the outcome, and her concerns regarding the case involving her sister. Since she knew her to be innocent in this matter. Which got Gereon involved, and that brought forth some detaining and a push to garner statements when it was learned that the 14th Precinct seemed to have the most cases involving minors going to jail. But as is often the case in this world, two steps forward brings forth one step back. And those involved in whatever machinations are happening behind the scenes at the 14th, made sure to step in. By killing Rudi for having information that could end the salad days there, and of course… there’s a corrupt judge that is helping them out, and he even had everyone that Charlotte cares for, sent to jail no problem with a prompt trial. But even still, there was joy to be found in all of this. Mainly because at last, Gereon and Charlotte were on good terms again, and working so close and spending so much time in Gereon’s place together, led to the moment we’ve all been waiting for… that forbidden kiss and electric union we’ve known they’ve wanted to indulge in. If anything, the theme of these episodes could be related to the ebb and flow of life. And how good moments and bad moments go back and forth in tandem since we saw that here. But that aside, this was indeed an epic set of episodes through and through. For they were indeed filled to the brim with important moments to set up the future and all kinds of conflicts that will somehow spill over as well, and one of them may even harken back to earlier seasons. Since the Russians are still sniffing around. But this is what we’ve come to expect from this show, jam packed episodes that give us a rich world to explore, and it will be interesting to see where all these cases and moments take us in the weeks to come. Until next time. Watch ‘Babylon Berlin’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Seven of ‘The Acolyte’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
There is an old saying that applies well in this life, in that… there are two sides to every story. And this saying has merit because it is unequivocally true. Because for every great thing that happens or every bad thing that happens… there are two incredible stories that provide us with context and understanding as to how that moment came to fruition, and it is important to know those two stories. To perhaps replicate that which is wondrous and to clearly avoid that which went wrong. If anything, the reality that everything comes forth because of two stories is top of mind today, because we received the other half of the story in The Acolyte on Disney+, last night. For ‘Choice’ returned us to the past once more to see what the Jedi were up to on Brendok all those years ago, and we quickly came to learn that Sol and his team were part of a scientific expedition on that world. For it was supposed to be a dead world courtesy of a hyperspace accident. But there was now life thriving, likely because of some kind of Force vergence, and well… when we caught up with everyone in this story, the mission was… not well received. For little was found and Torbin was struggling with being away from home and being mindful of his thoughts. But action came forth when Sol discovered the Coven and got his crew involved and the rest as they say, is history. But there were some fascinating bits to this story that were filled in here on the Jedi side. Such as the fact that the Coven more or less tested the Jedi’s mettle in this tale. By poking around Torbin’s mind to see how far fear and anger would push him to cause trouble. Not to mention, Sol was deeply impacted by this mission and truly believed that the Jedi weren’t doing enough to bring peace and security to the galaxy, which led him to take part in selfish and dark actions, such as putting down Mother Aniseya. Not to mention, Kelnacca was placed under the control of the Coven, a move that prompted their death when Indara stepped in to save his mind. Which made all of the Jedi look selfish and foolish and rightfully so, because they were in this instance, and well, all this other side of the story informed us of, was that this entire incident, was a disaster brought forth by arrogance and miscommunication. Since neither side offered trust or grace, just fear and concern and well… this is quite the important bit of context and offers great understanding for the future of the galaxy. Since it demonstrated how frustrations were building toward the Jedi and their stance on the Force and how the Jedi, were losing control of the order. Because these are actions that were selfish and concerning and were supposed to be eliminated from the order. But alas, it was all there and there was no real leadership to stop such actions, just lofty expectations and a mess to clean up that has sowed more discontent and hate. Which really does give us a solid view of how this kind of arrogance from the Jedi would allow for the Sith to grow in power and work behind the scenes. For the Jedi were not as in tune with the Force as they thought, or they all would have seen what was on this world and what was lurking in the shadows of the galaxy. But all lessons and context aside, this was… a solid episode. One that filled in the blanks as needed and gave us true perspective on a true tragedy that could have been avoided with trust and grace, and that all-important communication. And well… now that we know the whole story, and now that others will as well… it will be interesting to see what kind of impact context and truth will have upon a pair of broken sisters that have spent their lives desperately searching for both. Until next time. Watch ‘The Acolyte’Apple TV+ Releases Trailer for First-Ever Television Adaptation of Cult Classic ‘Time Bandits’7/9/2024 Written by John Edward Betancourt

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 405 of ‘My Life Is Murder’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One particularly difficult task that all parents must take part in, is ensuring that their children are treated equally. For one cannot be better than the other in a parent’s eyes. Otherwise, issues come into play. Because favoritism and forgetting about the other child or children, can damage a psyche and truly shatter the self-worth of a growing mind, and for the most part, parents hold to this edict. For they understand the damage it can do and don’t want to cause their children harm… but alas… this is no easy task. Because sometimes, there are moments where one child does indeed curry favor, and sometimes… parents care not about balance. They just let loose, offer all their love to one and let the others fend for themselves emotionally and that can lead to disaster internally and externally. For if the child in question can no longer handle the pain of being forgotten, they may go to extremes, as evidenced by the next episode of My Life Is Murder on Acorn TV. For ‘En Pointe’ saw that truth come to light, in quite the wild way. For this particular tale saw Alexa and her team investigate the death of a ballerina, named Isabel. Who died under wild circumstances involving a bow and arrow and well… everyone’s first thought was that she was so good that this was a matter of revenge. One brought forth by other dancers. So of course, the competition was investigated, only for everyone to learn… they did nothing. Sure, they acted weird, but they were simply trying to keep a low profile, because they were in the process of leaving the dance academy in question and wanted no excess attention. Because no one liked the instructor, and no one wanted her to retaliate. Which meant… it was time to turn attention her way. To see if the top boss decided to kill Isabel… for one very big, very important reason. For Isabel, was a big-time cash cow for the academy. Courtesy of her very rich family, whom it seemed was no longer keen on donating money to the academy. Which was a perfect reason to commit murder, but that suspect simply didn’t add up. No instead, Alexa and Madison chased the money and began to discover some fascinating facts about the family in question. In that, Isabel had power of attorney in her family, since her father had mental acuity issues, so in essence… she was her own donation train and oddly, money was moving around in a funny manner after her passing. Which led Alexa to ponder upon the very real possibility that this was a case of sibling rivalry, and it turned out… it was. For Caitlin, Isabel’s sister… hated the fact that Isabel was the favored child in this family, and able to do whatever she wanted with money. A hate that was compounded by the fact that she bought her way into a big ballet audition when she stunk as a dancer and well… that prompted Caitlin to learn how to handle a bow and arrow… to end this sibling rivalry once and for all. All of which spoke deeply… to how favoritism can break a child. Granted, in most cases, it won’t drive a sibling to foul play. But it will do a lot of what we saw here. It will create jealousy, it will damage ego and self-worth and above all, it will deeply hurt a child and leave them listless. To the point where they will clap back to find worth and have value. Which is why all parents should strive for equality and kindness with their kids, so they all have a fighting chance, and all of that was wonderfully expressed, through this incredible episode. One that once again offered up a different kind of case for Alexa to solve and was filled with the magnificent misdirection this show is known for, and it will be fascinating to see what other wild cases lie ahead as season four of this magnificent show continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘My Life Is Murder’
Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 208 of ‘Race to Survive: New Zealand’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. It is definitely safe to say, that last week’s episode of Race to Survive: New Zealand on USA Network was quite ominous in nature. After all, we saw Oliver and Corry struggle for the first time this season, to the point where it seemed as though the lack of food, they didn’t get in Survival Camp a little while ago was going to bring about great trouble for them as the race continued. Not to mention, Ryan was fighting hard to push through some nagging injuries. Since his knee was straight up aching and there appeared to be a tendon injury coming into play as well, leaving us to wonder what kind of impact those injuries would have upon Ryan and Bronsen going forward. Well as it turned out, the next episode in this saga wasted little time in letting us know if those ominous moments were of concern after all. For ‘A Rule Was Broken’ opened up… with a farewell. For after spending the night to really assess Ryan’s injuries and ponder upon how much worse things could get when it came to Ryan’s knee and arm, he and Bronsen came to the decision to tap out. To preserve their physical health and just like that… another team was eliminated via injury, one that really did fight hard during this race since Ryan and Bronsen were consistently in the top three and in the thick of it. But that’s how this race goes unfortunately, and they weren’t the only ones sent home this week either. Because as the helicopter whisked Ryan and Bronsen to safety and medical treatment, the other teams finished battling through the tough terrain of this brutal coast, to reach the Finish Crate. Wherein everyone settled in for Survival Camp, to prepare for the next leg of the race and well, that’s when the next elimination came into play. One that was an outright surprise. For the producers had to come forth and explain to everyone that a rule had been broken, one that Corry and Oliver violated. For they crossed the line and ate one of the protected species, mainly because… they were straight up starving and hunger clouded their judgment. Which resulted in a disqualification and an early end to the race for two favorites to win it. Which left everyone in Survival Camp, besides themselves. Because they did not expect to be the final three teams in this manner, but they were, and they used this time to really rest and recoup and ponder upon so much regarding this race. Such as how quickly fortunes can change and how a simple or injury or mistake can end the whole thing for them. Not to mention, how fortunate they were. Because just like that, they were now looking at one final race to win it all, and truly… it could be Kennedy and Nik, it could be Paula and Creighton, and it could be Ethan and Tyrie. For the race is truly up for grabs and in true Race to Survive style, there will be another twist for the competitors to overcome in their quest to win half a million dollars. In that, there will be an individual competition to go with the final leg of the journey, which will undoubtedly add surprise and drama to the mix and possibly another surprise farewell. But while we wait to see, we can reflect upon one shocking episode. Because we simply did not expect two teams to go home in this manner. After all, it really seemed as though Ryan and Bronsen were going to fight to the bitter end, and that Ryan was going to fight through the pain. But clearly, those injuries were far more painful than any of us knew, and what a shocking twist for Corry and Oliver. Who clearly reached a point of starvation that few of us know or will ever know. But alas, what’s done is done, and now it is onto the final segment of this brutal race to survive, and it will be interesting to see who wins it all. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt There were times in our youth, that we found life to be… supremely frustrating. For a bevy of reasons. Sometimes it was simple, in that, we weren’t allowed to do what we wanted to do because we were kids and had to abide by our parents’ rules. Sometimes our frustrations were more complex. Wherein we felt no sense of worth or empowerment because of our age and because of the fact that we simply weren’t listened to as kids, even though we had important stuff to say and value to add. So, we each took part in a mental exercise when our frustrations boiled over. In that, we would simply slip into a fantasy world where we were grown up and able to do what grown-ups were able to do. Or we imagined a life where we were someone else, someone that could garner attention and be heard or we would simply pretend to be someone of value… say a superhero. All to just feel more and be more in our minds, since in that moment, we meant so little to the rest of the world. But in the end, we put up with the frustrations until we were of age and moved on, because that’s what you do. But… there’s a corner of our mind that still wonders in adulthood, what would have happened if our fantasies came true? What would our lives have become if we were a hero and/or could have been someone else in that moment? Well, it just so happens, that a brand-new family series on Apple TV+ will soon explore what would happen if we could indeed be a hero, be anyone on a moment’s notice and that makes Me, quite the important series. One that we wanted to spotlight today in a spoiler-free manner of course, because of how many important moments happen in this series. But what we will talk about today, is the show’s incredible plot. Because that… is what sets up the answers to those questions. For this is a story that introduces us to a teenager named Ben, who is at a critical point in his life. For he has a new blended family, and he is in middle school and dealing with so much. The stuff that downright demands one lose themselves in fantasies of elseworlds and alternate personas. But there is just one problem for Ben, in that… he discovers that his imagination has become reality. Wherein he can wear the face of anyone he chooses, making him something of a hero in his own right and well, that… brings about one creative and fascinating series. The kind that immediately teaches us what life would be like if we could have pulled that off as kids, in a sobering and unique manner. Because this is a story that doesn’t indulge or validate our fantasies of being Superman and saving the world from incredible threats to thunderous applause from mom and dad. This story examines how such a surprise would play out in real life, and it informs us that it might not be all that it is cracked up to be, and that leads… to some powerful examinations. The kind that deeply ponder upon what it means to be our authentic self and how that is more valuable than any fantasy. Not to mention, this is a coming-of-age story through and through that does examine the troubles that teenagers run into now, and the struggles of blended family life. Which makes this, a brilliant family entertainment story. One that really does feature an amazingly original plot, that appeals to people of all ages. Since adults remember those days and there are kids going through some of Ben’s experiences now, and that can allow for incredible conversations and learning to take place since those lessons offer so much for kids and parents to ponder upon, and the wonder of this series doesn’t end there. Because it also features writing from series creator Barry L. Levy and his amazing staff, that treats the audience with respect and the acting also sells this magnificent tale. With Lucian-River Chauhan (Ben) leading the charge with his honest and earnest portrayal of a teenager caught in the midst of something wild and incredible, and he is balanced out nicely by Abigail Pniowsky, who plays his stepsibling, Max, with a delightful earnestness, and all of these elements come together to offer up a revolutionary coming of age story. One that is riveting, intelligent and filled with wonder and great storytelling, and the best news of all, is you can enjoy this magnificent story in a couple of days. For Me debuts on Apple TV+ this Friday, and we cannot wait for you to see it, nor can we wait to share our interviews with Barry L. Levy, Lucian-River Chauhan and Abigail Pniowsky as we count down the minutes to the arrival of this refreshing series. Written by John Edward Betancourt It is definitely safe to say that period pieces set in the royal ages of humanity’s past, have grown a bit stale in nature. For they often ground themselves deeply in hard history, and at times explore moments that can be a touch mundane. All in an effort to be authentic, and while there’s nothing wrong with that… this approach has indeed been overused and overplayed… to the point where audiences have craved something different and thankfully, STARZ was happy to deliver. For season one of the hit STARZ series, The Serpent Queen, was a downright revelation. For it took the period piece format, and simply flipped it upside down. All by offering up a vastly different kind of origin story for Catherine de Medici and her rise to power. Wherein the story didn’t linger for episodes on end regarding her troubled and painful youth, nor did it speak in excessive detail as to how she schemed her way to the top. It was simply impactful, it got its point across in a powerful and devastating manner, if need be, and used that to tell a crisp and compelling story that was also whip smart, well-acted, and outright engaging, courtesy of the brisk and intense nature in which we learned about Catherine’s meteoric rise to power. And of course, it was so well done and so modern, that we simply craved more of the show and thankfully, a second season was granted. One that arrives on STARZ this Friday, and one that has left us wondering… what lies ahead for Catherine. For normally, the rise to the top would have taken several seasons in a show in this vein. Not to mention, the coronation could serve as a series finale. But here, she is upon the throne as Regent of France in year two, and one cannot help but desperately wonder what more we will learn about her life, and her rule, and well… we here at NTG thought it would be worthwhile to share some of what you can expect in season two, to help prepare for Friday’s big release, in a spoiler-free manner no less. Because you’re not asking for all the details, just an understanding and well… what we can tell you is that the creator of the show, Justin Haythe has assembled a second season for the ages. One that moves us a little further down the line in Catherine’s life to present some real challenges for her. Some of which are political in nature, some of which are family based, since her wee little ones are no longer wee in season two. Which gives rise to some fascinating character dynamics, and lessons upon the past, and sets the stage for a season that is so much bigger and bolder in nature. In large part because some of those challenges become massive problems for the Crown to deal with. The kind that will test Catherine like never before, and truly push her into the nickname history knows her for. Plus, this season will harbor some surprises along the way courtesy of Minnie Driver’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I and all of this makes, for a stunning second season of storytelling. One that never steps away from its intense and impactful roots to bring us a second season that does in fact, surpass what season one had to offer. Which is no small feat of course, since season one was indeed so sublime. But those bigger challenges from a wiser and more experienced Catherine bring about those more impressive moments and of course, let Samantha Morton, who plays Catherine, shine. In fact, it should be noted that Samantha is simply at her best here as an actor since she takes Catherine’s emotional journey to a whole new level with an ease that only she can, and her moving performance only draws you further into this world and further complicates the love/hate relationship one has with Catherine. Since she remains the vulnerable queen we care about, but has no qualms making the hard choices that we lament as those big moments, the kind that will have you on the edge of your seat, present themselves to the Queen. Of course, she’s not alone in offering up great performances either, since Minnie Driver is simply a delight as Elizabeth and plays off of Samantha well in this tale, courtesy of a special zest and zeal she brings to the role that we haven’t seen in a portrayal of Elizabeth before, and the returning cast also further flesh out their character’s devious machinations with glee. All of which brings forth, an amazing season of storytelling. One that truly is impressive through and through, courtesy of writing that is simply sublime and performances that sell the moment and a story that is compelling, fascinating and intoxicating, and the best news of all is that you don’t have to wait that much longer to enjoy this new season. For Friday will bring forth the debut of season two of The Serpent Queen, and we cannot wait for you to experience its wonder, nor can we wait to share our interview with Executive Producer Erwin Stoff and Creator/EP Justin Haythe, as we countdown the minutes to Friday’s premiere. |
