Written by John Edward BetancourtFew things in this life are as excruciating as waiting for the Season Premiere of Doctor Who and this time around is no exception. Matt Smith has said goodbye to the TARDIS and Peter Capaldi has taken the reins and the mystery surrounding his Twelfth Doctor is only building the excitement. In fact, I think it is safe to say that this particular Season Premiere almost feels like a geeky Super Bowl when it comes to how badly all of us want to watch it, which brings about the question, how do you watch your Who? Are you planning on pulling together your friends? Maybe just popping a bag of popcorn and enjoying it alone? Or maybe, just maybe you are planning to find a theater playing it on the big screen this weekend and seeing it in the company of Whovians? Well if the last option sounds like a blast, and you want to see the premiere the night it actually comes out, then guess what? Denver Comic Con and the SIE Film Center have you covered! No joke, Saturday night DCC will be on hand to host a Who themed Costume Contest and a little trivia before we all settle in to enjoy "Deep Breath"! But of course, you'll want more details than just that, so here is the breakdown. The festivities for this awesome evening will kick off in the lobby around five p.m. to get everyone settled in. Expect the costume contest to happen around five thirty and we will all filter into the theater around six for trivia before the big event! But of course the most important part, how do I get tickets for this awesome event...well this is a free event so it is first come first served, so be there early! Regardless for more information from the SIE Film Center, and the event click here. We definitely look forward to seeing all of you, since the Girls of Geek team will be on hand because there's no way we would miss out on an evening with the Doctor and our fellow Whovians, see you all Saturday!

Guys, I have a bit of a confession to make. As it turns out, I'm not hugely into sports…I know! You're shocked! That's okay! Over the past year I've really gotten into Hockey (Go Bruins!) and lately, Lacrosse. As it turns out, I love these two sports more than I ever thought possible. Let me tell you, we here at Girls of Geek had the honor of going to two Mammoth games…and they were simply astonishing. January 4th at the Pepsi Center in Denver, our very own Mammoth team faced off against the Vancouver Stealth. The best part? It was Star Wars Night. That means everything was Star Wars themed. Costumes were encouraged, props brought, and many a cosplayer was present. I even got to play with a Lightsaber thanks to John being awesome enough to bring an extra one! (Seriously? Awesome!) I have to say, this was one of the most awesome and intense games I have ever witnessed. We start out with Darth Vader and a few Storm Troopers and the Mammoth Mascot with a Chewy inspired accessory introducing the team. From then on, it was just brilliant. The evening was filled with humor, Star Wars puns, and even a bit of trivia. To give you an idea of the awesomeness, when introducing the home team, many of the players were shown taking off a Vader helmet or in Jedi robes with Light Sabers. The away team was not given such a…kind introduction. The Stealth players were each introduced as 'Jar Jar' before their actual name. That being said, the Stealth put up an amazing fight. For some time, they were actually winning. The tug of war that became Saturday's game was utterly nerve wracking. But in the end, the Mammoth used the force, and with a final score of 13-12….we won. And boy was it a glorious win. Form the last score to the very end of the game, fans were on their feet and cheering. It was exhilarating. If all Lacrosse games are this awesome…call me a Mammoth fan, I. Am. In. The added wonderfulness that is Star Wars did not hurt. At one point, two Storm Trooper's were featured on the Kiss Cam…and yes, they delivered. It was a great night, fantastic fun, and a wonderful crowd. Who knew you could mix being a nerd with sports!? Very few things would get me out of bed on a snowy and cold day. Star Wars Night presented by the Colorado Mammoth would be one of them. Being a child hood fan of the original Star Wars movies, how could I stay away? Having Storm Troopers, Vader, and some Jawas, walking around the Pepsi Center, what else would a lifelong fan require? Lacrosse would be the answer to that. As the Colorado Mammoth teamed up with Denver Comic Con this year to present this epic event. Watching the intro on the big screen in the middle of the Pepsi Center almost brought tears to my eyes as the opening credits rolled, Star Wars style. Then during the player introductions, seeing all of the Mammoth players dressed up as their favorite Star Wars characters added a smile to the night as I knew what to expect going forward. Having Storm Troopers and Darth Vader standing at midfield for the opening introductions made this night just a bit more magical as both teams hit the field. Although the weather should have played a key factor in the game's attendance, there was a fantastic turn out and everyone seemed to be getting into the mood. With Cow Bells and Light Sabers being waved all around, the fans took heart in the event, and the game. But halftime was the high point of the event, when Darth Vader helped judge the costume contest. Admiral Ackbar won with his signature line and also because of his styling sport coat. The Mammoth ended up winning the battle, 13 to 12 and kept everyone's spirits high as they exited the arena. Congratulations to the Mammoth and Denver Comic Con for throwing such a great event. People young and old came out and made this one of the most memorable themed sporting events I have been to in a long time. It is always a joy to see families come together at an event like this, along with the children’s eyes lighting up when the get to meet face to face with an icon from my own youth. If you have not been to a Mammoth game yet, make sure to check it out, but remember to bring your yelling voice and a cow bell. It's an amazing atmosphere for a sporting event and you will have a great time whenever the Mammoth score a goal. #AMPITUP The geek culture is enjoying its finest hour. Nerdy is everywhere andaccepted in a way it has never been accepted before. The Walking Deadis one of the most popular shows on television and week after week people tune in to watch the adventures of physicists on The Big Bang Theory. Not to mention comic book movies rule the roost at the box office. Out here in Denver we are as passionate about the Batman as we are the Broncos so it only makes sense that last night the Colorado Mammoth felt the need to celebrate the best of both worlds with Star Wars Night. That's right. Lacrosse fans and Star Wars fans filled the Pepsi Center to celebrate the awesomeness of sports and the exploits of a galaxy far, far, away. Just how well did the two themes mesh? Seamlessly. After all, how can you go wrong with Star Wars and sports? Plus the Mammoth handled the event in style. The pregame show was nothing short of spectacular as Storm Troopers, Jawas and even Darth Vader came to greet the Mammoth after an amazing video introduction that was truly out of this world. Turns out the Mammoth put together a custom intro to the evening that mirrored the iconic Star Wars, complete with a sprawling story that scrolled over the stars and custom player introductions. But the tribute didn't end there. A costume contest presided over by the 501st Mountain Garrison only added to the magic of the night. But, I should probably make mention of the fact, there was a game played too! It was another fast paced, hard fought matchup and the Mammoth were victorious. In fact I'm quickly being sucked into the world of the NLL and will have to keep an eye on the rest of the season. Yet as I enjoyed the game, I also enjoyed the fact that we are seeing more events like this in Denver, more franchises embracing the geeky, and I do honestly think it is due to Denver Comic Con. Let's face it, this town is crazy for that con and seeing as how tonight's event hooked folks up with a discount to DCC 2014 I expect to see more events like this, and that's just fine by me. All in all it was an incredible night. It was great to see such an awesome combination of science fiction and sports and my thanks go out to the Mammoth for hosting such an incredible event. Written by: John Edward BetancourtIf you're geeky about something in this life, chances are you are geeky about a great many things. You have your core franchise that you grew up with and that you love, but along the way something else caught your eye. It could have been that your love of the United Federation of Planets grew to include the TARDIS and the Rebel Alliance. Or like many of us, your love of all those things grew to include football, hockey or lacrosse. The bottom line is, many geeks that I know are sports fans and the good news for all of us...is that the Colorado Mammoth have figured this out as well. In fact, they are hooking all of us up by hosting Star Wars Night on January 4, 2014 when the Colorado Mammoth host the Vancouver Stealth. Yes, a themed science fiction night at a professional sports game, and it only gets better. Costumes are not only allowed, but strongly encouraged. Oh and we're not done yet. They're offering discounted tickets to the game! First Level tickets, which are normally $25 plus fees are available for $20 and Club Level tickets, which are normally $26-30 plus fees have been reduced to $21-26. That's easy just follow this link: http://www.mammothtix.com/dcc This sounds like it is going to be a blast. I've been to a variety of sports venues and games here in Denver, and at no point can I remember a great deal on tickets and a chance to cosplay and bring my lightsaber to a game. Snag your tickets now, because I'm sure they won't last and we can't wait to see all of you at the game! Denver Comic Con and the Colorado Symphony. Two fantastic groups joining forces to add a little bit of fun into our lives. ‘The Hero’s Journey’ was the next thing that should have had all of us up and ready to go to the show. A tribute to Denver Comic Con with some of the most popular music that had molded our lives, ranging from Batman to Superman with plenty of filler in the middle to keep you entertained. A date night for some, family outing for others, DCC and the Colorado Symphony delivered something special for all to witness. With Conductor Scott O’Neil at the helm, the symphony players followed and took hold of many people’s hearts with fantastic renditions from our favorite science fiction shows and movies with Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. Not moving out to far out of the realm, Batman and Austin Powers were also highlighted and made enjoyable once again. Being graced by Nick Urata and his Theremin brought a smile to many people’s faces as he did the Doctor Who and original Star Trek themes justice. That combined with a special guest appearance by hometown hero Austin Wintory brought us some excerpts from his score for the video game, Journey. Finishing off with the score from Superman, the perfect night was complete and everyone’s expectations seemed to have been meet. Watching the audience during the concert makes me enjoy these types of events even more than I could ever expect. Some people dance in their seats, others direct along with conductor with their hands, and others just have tears in their eyes from how moving the music is to them. It is hard to describe the feelings that some of these songs will invoke in one’s soul, as most of this music had been a part of our lives for so many years. A fantastic show that has left zero regrets with me. The Colorado Symphony did what was expected and took it to the next level in my eyes...and ears. Playing some of the all-time greatest scores and adding in some of the most popular video games scores makes this an event for everyone of any age to enjoy. I am looking forward to seeing if this partnership continues between the Colorado Symphony and Denver Comic Con as this was a dream come true for many fans. If you made it to the show, you know what I am talking about. If you did not make it, I am sorry that I cannot describe just how wonderful this really was and make sure to keep an eye out for it to happen next year, hopefully. On Saturday November 16th, the Colorado Symphony put on a fantastic show. Dubbed, SymphCon; they played music from nothing but nerdy and geeky things. Starting with the classic Star Wars theme and ending with Superman, the night was one to remember. Personally, I am a total classical music geek. I've loved symphonies since I was a kid, yep, was born weird. So, when I was told we were going, I squeed, not squeaked, squeed. The night began with a train ride and also ended with a train ride. The middle, however, was my favorite. As the concert began I melted. I've heard my fair share of classical music before, but I've never heard a symphony play like this before. There is something to be said about hearing a symphony in person. Something to be said about hearing a symphony play all the coolest, nerdiest, songs ever. I'm not going to lie, I may have been moved to tears just a few times. I also may have squeed really loud when they played Batman: the Animated Series opening theme. I am sure the people around me heard (Scotty and Mattie may have laughed at me), but I grew up on that show. That was my first superhero cartoon. And, as Mattie can tell you, I am a huge Batman nerd. There's a lot of Batman in my room… It wasn't just Batman, however. They played the Doctor Who theme, Star Trek (new and classic) and there ware several times I was lost in the music. If there had been a CD of that performance,I would have bought it and put it on repeat. With such utter talent; such skill; I was blown away. At the very end of it all, I was so sad that the evening was over. If I could go back in time and listen all over again, I would. It's also good to see such a huge turn out. Never before have I been wowed by the utter outpour and support of the nerd community. What an amazing sight to see so many people. I got the chance to meet and talk with a few people. A few were there for the first time, solely to hear all the music the Colorado Symphony was playing. Thank you to the Colorado Symphony and all the talented members. The strings are forever my favorite, and the violins were breathtaking. The whole performance was utterly breathtaking. I truly hope we get to experience this again. I love film. Always have, always will. I'm proud of the collection of Blu-rays and DVDs that line my walls but I am equally as proud of the collection of soundtracks from many of those films that line another wall within my home. I own so many for one simple reason, film is nothing without music. Let's be honest, some of our favorite memories from our favorite movies have a musical chord that match that image in our mind. That perfect note thrilled us or shattered our heart and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to enjoy those incredible moments on my iPod and let those amazing memories wash over me. So imagine my extreme joy when I found out that our good friends at Denver Comic Con had paired up with the Colorado Symphony to give us "The Hero's Journey: A Symphonic Tribute to Comic Con" and last night, I had the distinct honor of attending this event and quite frankly, it blew my mind. The first thing that made me realize we were in for an incredible show, was the incredible turnout. The place was PACKED. Wall to wall fans and cosplayers, including the 501st were wandering the lobby waiting for the doors to open so we could all share in the music and while the wait for the show was magical enough, the actual performance was breathtaking. As I sat there, hearing those soundtracks that I have only heard on my headphones...well it brought tears to my eyes. I have never heard John Williams' theme to Superman performed live before until this event and being able to do so brought back every wonderful memory of my childhood. But despite the fact that the crowd was into every moment of this concert, and that we all learned that the theremin is one of the greatest instruments ever made, Austin Wintory and his piece from the video game Journey absolutely stole the show. It was a haunted, beautiful piece that left the crowd silent in awe. In the end we at Girls of Geek need to express our thanks to both Denver Comic Con and The Colorado Symphony for putting together this event. This was just an incredible and unique show and Conductor Scott O'Neil did an amazing job of not only entertaining the crowd but he managed to pull off the impossible...he actually made our favorite memories and our favorite music come to life, and this is an event that I will never forget. As the Con season reaches an end, Rocky Mountain Con is in the books. Being a first year Con, I did not know what to expect going to the first year at Denver Comic Con and the 45th year of Mile High Con but I must admit I was very impressed. The layout for Rocky Mountain Con was fantastic, tons of space for the vendors along for the artists was just fantastic. Brining in such names of Arthur Suydam and Jason Metcalf for the ultimate comic book lovers was great. Also an appearance by wrestling legend Big Van Vader left little more to be desired. Artists surrounded the event floor making this one of the most prolific art shows ever seen. With great talents such as Robert Elrod, Todd Jones and one of my new favorites Shelby Robertson, prints, originals along with custom art was to be viewed by all. Having time to sit back and talk to the artists is something that I always enjoy. Of course while the bigd Having time to talk with one of your comic/artist icons without being rushed out of the conversation makes an event like this very special. If artwork is not up your alley, some Cos Players were gracious enough to join the event as well. Erin Card, Destiny Nickelsen, Ivy Doomkitty, Nicole Marie Jean and Elizabeth Wither made the event special for many people. Not knowing exactly what Cos Play is in my short tenure for these events, these characters are very entertaining to talk to. Making sure to talk with their fans and take pictures with any and all that come to their booths was just amazing to watch. Thank you to our friends at the Points of Interest team. Enjoying a con with your friends is really the only way to experience this kind of event. Being a blogger of what I read or watch, it was a joy watching my friend Josh work his magic at the booths as he asked questions to what the guests thoughts were and what they would like to see going forward. A true professional at work. Overall this was a great Con. With the artists that attended this year, I must say that my art collection did not grow once again. Donating a portion of the proceeds raised to the Aurora Rise foundation is another great reason to have made it down. I hope Rocky Mountain Con comes back next year with the same quality of guests.
