Written by John Edward BetancourtThere are few things in this life as noble as sacrifice. We have all given something up for our friends, or our family or those we hold near and dear. There simply comes a point when we have to help others, and we know that by giving something up, we have done something special for the greater good in someone's life. But there are those in this world who go above and beyond when it comes to sacrifice. They are the men and women who choose to serve our country and put themselves in harm's way for absolute strangers. They don't know many of us out there but they are willing to put their life on the line in the name of all the freedom we enjoy, and sometimes they need help. So many soldiers face incredible decisions and terrifying situations and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not uncommon for our veterans returning home from combat overseas. With all that in mind, it's good to know that there are people out there looking for new ways to help these veterans cope and you have the opportunity to see it in action this upcoming First Friday. Yes, on September 5th, the Hall of Justice Gallery off of 841 Santa Fe in Denver will be host to a fundraising and science fiction themed event, The Art of War. Now the Art of War Project is designed to help veterans cope with PTSD by way of creativity. They help teach veterans the value of art and how they can leave some of the negativity effecting them on canvas. So by all means please swing by the Hall of Justice on Friday, take a look at the incredible work from this project and help out our veterans. Plus to make this as much fun as possible, if you have a sci fi cosplay, wear it, we here at Girls of Geek will certainly be in costume and we look forward to seeing all of you at this amazing event.

Written by John Edward BetancourtFew things in this life are as excruciating as waiting for the Season Premiere of Doctor Who and this time around is no exception. Matt Smith has said goodbye to the TARDIS and Peter Capaldi has taken the reins and the mystery surrounding his Twelfth Doctor is only building the excitement. In fact, I think it is safe to say that this particular Season Premiere almost feels like a geeky Super Bowl when it comes to how badly all of us want to watch it, which brings about the question, how do you watch your Who? Are you planning on pulling together your friends? Maybe just popping a bag of popcorn and enjoying it alone? Or maybe, just maybe you are planning to find a theater playing it on the big screen this weekend and seeing it in the company of Whovians? Well if the last option sounds like a blast, and you want to see the premiere the night it actually comes out, then guess what? Denver Comic Con and the SIE Film Center have you covered! No joke, Saturday night DCC will be on hand to host a Who themed Costume Contest and a little trivia before we all settle in to enjoy "Deep Breath"! But of course, you'll want more details than just that, so here is the breakdown. The festivities for this awesome evening will kick off in the lobby around five p.m. to get everyone settled in. Expect the costume contest to happen around five thirty and we will all filter into the theater around six for trivia before the big event! But of course the most important part, how do I get tickets for this awesome event...well this is a free event so it is first come first served, so be there early! Regardless for more information from the SIE Film Center, and the event click here. We definitely look forward to seeing all of you, since the Girls of Geek team will be on hand because there's no way we would miss out on an evening with the Doctor and our fellow Whovians, see you all Saturday! |
