Denver Comic Con and the Colorado Symphony. Two fantastic groups joining forces to add a little bit of fun into our lives. ‘The Hero’s Journey’ was the next thing that should have had all of us up and ready to go to the show. A tribute to Denver Comic Con with some of the most popular music that had molded our lives, ranging from Batman to Superman with plenty of filler in the middle to keep you entertained. A date night for some, family outing for others, DCC and the Colorado Symphony delivered something special for all to witness. With Conductor Scott O’Neil at the helm, the symphony players followed and took hold of many people’s hearts with fantastic renditions from our favorite science fiction shows and movies with Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. Not moving out to far out of the realm, Batman and Austin Powers were also highlighted and made enjoyable once again. Being graced by Nick Urata and his Theremin brought a smile to many people’s faces as he did the Doctor Who and original Star Trek themes justice. That combined with a special guest appearance by hometown hero Austin Wintory brought us some excerpts from his score for the video game, Journey. Finishing off with the score from Superman, the perfect night was complete and everyone’s expectations seemed to have been meet. Watching the audience during the concert makes me enjoy these types of events even more than I could ever expect. Some people dance in their seats, others direct along with conductor with their hands, and others just have tears in their eyes from how moving the music is to them. It is hard to describe the feelings that some of these songs will invoke in one’s soul, as most of this music had been a part of our lives for so many years. A fantastic show that has left zero regrets with me. The Colorado Symphony did what was expected and took it to the next level in my eyes...and ears. Playing some of the all-time greatest scores and adding in some of the most popular video games scores makes this an event for everyone of any age to enjoy. I am looking forward to seeing if this partnership continues between the Colorado Symphony and Denver Comic Con as this was a dream come true for many fans. If you made it to the show, you know what I am talking about. If you did not make it, I am sorry that I cannot describe just how wonderful this really was and make sure to keep an eye out for it to happen next year, hopefully.

On Saturday November 16th, the Colorado Symphony put on a fantastic show. Dubbed, SymphCon; they played music from nothing but nerdy and geeky things. Starting with the classic Star Wars theme and ending with Superman, the night was one to remember. Personally, I am a total classical music geek. I've loved symphonies since I was a kid, yep, was born weird. So, when I was told we were going, I squeed, not squeaked, squeed. The night began with a train ride and also ended with a train ride. The middle, however, was my favorite. As the concert began I melted. I've heard my fair share of classical music before, but I've never heard a symphony play like this before. There is something to be said about hearing a symphony in person. Something to be said about hearing a symphony play all the coolest, nerdiest, songs ever. I'm not going to lie, I may have been moved to tears just a few times. I also may have squeed really loud when they played Batman: the Animated Series opening theme. I am sure the people around me heard (Scotty and Mattie may have laughed at me), but I grew up on that show. That was my first superhero cartoon. And, as Mattie can tell you, I am a huge Batman nerd. There's a lot of Batman in my room… It wasn't just Batman, however. They played the Doctor Who theme, Star Trek (new and classic) and there ware several times I was lost in the music. If there had been a CD of that performance,I would have bought it and put it on repeat. With such utter talent; such skill; I was blown away. At the very end of it all, I was so sad that the evening was over. If I could go back in time and listen all over again, I would. It's also good to see such a huge turn out. Never before have I been wowed by the utter outpour and support of the nerd community. What an amazing sight to see so many people. I got the chance to meet and talk with a few people. A few were there for the first time, solely to hear all the music the Colorado Symphony was playing. Thank you to the Colorado Symphony and all the talented members. The strings are forever my favorite, and the violins were breathtaking. The whole performance was utterly breathtaking. I truly hope we get to experience this again. I love film. Always have, always will. I'm proud of the collection of Blu-rays and DVDs that line my walls but I am equally as proud of the collection of soundtracks from many of those films that line another wall within my home. I own so many for one simple reason, film is nothing without music. Let's be honest, some of our favorite memories from our favorite movies have a musical chord that match that image in our mind. That perfect note thrilled us or shattered our heart and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to enjoy those incredible moments on my iPod and let those amazing memories wash over me. So imagine my extreme joy when I found out that our good friends at Denver Comic Con had paired up with the Colorado Symphony to give us "The Hero's Journey: A Symphonic Tribute to Comic Con" and last night, I had the distinct honor of attending this event and quite frankly, it blew my mind. The first thing that made me realize we were in for an incredible show, was the incredible turnout. The place was PACKED. Wall to wall fans and cosplayers, including the 501st were wandering the lobby waiting for the doors to open so we could all share in the music and while the wait for the show was magical enough, the actual performance was breathtaking. As I sat there, hearing those soundtracks that I have only heard on my headphones...well it brought tears to my eyes. I have never heard John Williams' theme to Superman performed live before until this event and being able to do so brought back every wonderful memory of my childhood. But despite the fact that the crowd was into every moment of this concert, and that we all learned that the theremin is one of the greatest instruments ever made, Austin Wintory and his piece from the video game Journey absolutely stole the show. It was a haunted, beautiful piece that left the crowd silent in awe. In the end we at Girls of Geek need to express our thanks to both Denver Comic Con and The Colorado Symphony for putting together this event. This was just an incredible and unique show and Conductor Scott O'Neil did an amazing job of not only entertaining the crowd but he managed to pull off the impossible...he actually made our favorite memories and our favorite music come to life, and this is an event that I will never forget. As the Con season reaches an end, Rocky Mountain Con is in the books. Being a first year Con, I did not know what to expect going to the first year at Denver Comic Con and the 45th year of Mile High Con but I must admit I was very impressed. The layout for Rocky Mountain Con was fantastic, tons of space for the vendors along for the artists was just fantastic. Brining in such names of Arthur Suydam and Jason Metcalf for the ultimate comic book lovers was great. Also an appearance by wrestling legend Big Van Vader left little more to be desired. Artists surrounded the event floor making this one of the most prolific art shows ever seen. With great talents such as Robert Elrod, Todd Jones and one of my new favorites Shelby Robertson, prints, originals along with custom art was to be viewed by all. Having time to sit back and talk to the artists is something that I always enjoy. Of course while the bigd Having time to talk with one of your comic/artist icons without being rushed out of the conversation makes an event like this very special. If artwork is not up your alley, some Cos Players were gracious enough to join the event as well. Erin Card, Destiny Nickelsen, Ivy Doomkitty, Nicole Marie Jean and Elizabeth Wither made the event special for many people. Not knowing exactly what Cos Play is in my short tenure for these events, these characters are very entertaining to talk to. Making sure to talk with their fans and take pictures with any and all that come to their booths was just amazing to watch. Thank you to our friends at the Points of Interest team. Enjoying a con with your friends is really the only way to experience this kind of event. Being a blogger of what I read or watch, it was a joy watching my friend Josh work his magic at the booths as he asked questions to what the guests thoughts were and what they would like to see going forward. A true professional at work. Overall this was a great Con. With the artists that attended this year, I must say that my art collection did not grow once again. Donating a portion of the proceeds raised to the Aurora Rise foundation is another great reason to have made it down. I hope Rocky Mountain Con comes back next year with the same quality of guests.
