Guys, I have a bit of a confession to make. As it turns out, I'm not hugely into sports…I know! You're shocked! That's okay! Over the past year I've really gotten into Hockey (Go Bruins!) and lately, Lacrosse. As it turns out, I love these two sports more than I ever thought possible. Let me tell you, we here at Girls of Geek had the honor of going to two Mammoth games…and they were simply astonishing. January 4th at the Pepsi Center in Denver, our very own Mammoth team faced off against the Vancouver Stealth. The best part? It was Star Wars Night. That means everything was Star Wars themed. Costumes were encouraged, props brought, and many a cosplayer was present. I even got to play with a Lightsaber thanks to John being awesome enough to bring an extra one! (Seriously? Awesome!) I have to say, this was one of the most awesome and intense games I have ever witnessed. We start out with Darth Vader and a few Storm Troopers and the Mammoth Mascot with a Chewy inspired accessory introducing the team. From then on, it was just brilliant. The evening was filled with humor, Star Wars puns, and even a bit of trivia. To give you an idea of the awesomeness, when introducing the home team, many of the players were shown taking off a Vader helmet or in Jedi robes with Light Sabers. The away team was not given such a…kind introduction. The Stealth players were each introduced as 'Jar Jar' before their actual name. That being said, the Stealth put up an amazing fight. For some time, they were actually winning. The tug of war that became Saturday's game was utterly nerve wracking. But in the end, the Mammoth used the force, and with a final score of 13-12….we won. And boy was it a glorious win. Form the last score to the very end of the game, fans were on their feet and cheering. It was exhilarating. If all Lacrosse games are this awesome…call me a Mammoth fan, I. Am. In. The added wonderfulness that is Star Wars did not hurt. At one point, two Storm Trooper's were featured on the Kiss Cam…and yes, they delivered. It was a great night, fantastic fun, and a wonderful crowd. Who knew you could mix being a nerd with sports!?

Very few things would get me out of bed on a snowy and cold day. Star Wars Night presented by the Colorado Mammoth would be one of them. Being a child hood fan of the original Star Wars movies, how could I stay away? Having Storm Troopers, Vader, and some Jawas, walking around the Pepsi Center, what else would a lifelong fan require? Lacrosse would be the answer to that. As the Colorado Mammoth teamed up with Denver Comic Con this year to present this epic event. Watching the intro on the big screen in the middle of the Pepsi Center almost brought tears to my eyes as the opening credits rolled, Star Wars style. Then during the player introductions, seeing all of the Mammoth players dressed up as their favorite Star Wars characters added a smile to the night as I knew what to expect going forward. Having Storm Troopers and Darth Vader standing at midfield for the opening introductions made this night just a bit more magical as both teams hit the field. Although the weather should have played a key factor in the game's attendance, there was a fantastic turn out and everyone seemed to be getting into the mood. With Cow Bells and Light Sabers being waved all around, the fans took heart in the event, and the game. But halftime was the high point of the event, when Darth Vader helped judge the costume contest. Admiral Ackbar won with his signature line and also because of his styling sport coat. The Mammoth ended up winning the battle, 13 to 12 and kept everyone's spirits high as they exited the arena. Congratulations to the Mammoth and Denver Comic Con for throwing such a great event. People young and old came out and made this one of the most memorable themed sporting events I have been to in a long time. It is always a joy to see families come together at an event like this, along with the children’s eyes lighting up when the get to meet face to face with an icon from my own youth. If you have not been to a Mammoth game yet, make sure to check it out, but remember to bring your yelling voice and a cow bell. It's an amazing atmosphere for a sporting event and you will have a great time whenever the Mammoth score a goal. #AMPITUP The geek culture is enjoying its finest hour. Nerdy is everywhere andaccepted in a way it has never been accepted before. The Walking Deadis one of the most popular shows on television and week after week people tune in to watch the adventures of physicists on The Big Bang Theory. Not to mention comic book movies rule the roost at the box office. Out here in Denver we are as passionate about the Batman as we are the Broncos so it only makes sense that last night the Colorado Mammoth felt the need to celebrate the best of both worlds with Star Wars Night. That's right. Lacrosse fans and Star Wars fans filled the Pepsi Center to celebrate the awesomeness of sports and the exploits of a galaxy far, far, away. Just how well did the two themes mesh? Seamlessly. After all, how can you go wrong with Star Wars and sports? Plus the Mammoth handled the event in style. The pregame show was nothing short of spectacular as Storm Troopers, Jawas and even Darth Vader came to greet the Mammoth after an amazing video introduction that was truly out of this world. Turns out the Mammoth put together a custom intro to the evening that mirrored the iconic Star Wars, complete with a sprawling story that scrolled over the stars and custom player introductions. But the tribute didn't end there. A costume contest presided over by the 501st Mountain Garrison only added to the magic of the night. But, I should probably make mention of the fact, there was a game played too! It was another fast paced, hard fought matchup and the Mammoth were victorious. In fact I'm quickly being sucked into the world of the NLL and will have to keep an eye on the rest of the season. Yet as I enjoyed the game, I also enjoyed the fact that we are seeing more events like this in Denver, more franchises embracing the geeky, and I do honestly think it is due to Denver Comic Con. Let's face it, this town is crazy for that con and seeing as how tonight's event hooked folks up with a discount to DCC 2014 I expect to see more events like this, and that's just fine by me. All in all it was an incredible night. It was great to see such an awesome combination of science fiction and sports and my thanks go out to the Mammoth for hosting such an incredible event. |
