​Well football fans, we have reached quite the important point in the NFL season. For after seventeen weeks of hard-fought battles and surprises and injuries and Covid related delays, we have come to the end of the regular season. Which means that the playoffs and all the wondrous games that it has to offer is right around the corner. But before we dig into who will best who in the tournament and who might hoist the Lombardi Trophy, we do still have one last week of regular season NFL football to reflect upon. So, let’s dive right in and break down Week 17 in the NFL and all of the lessons it sent our way.  
 
Congratulations to the Washington Redskins for winning the NFC East.
Usually by the middle of the season, football fans have a general idea as to who is going to win a particular division thanks to the play of a dominate team that begins to pull away from the pack. But that simply wasn’t the case in the NFC East at all this year. Because from Week 1 to Week 17, there was no dominant team. Just four squads trying desperately trying to take the lead and it took the entire season to determine a division winner. Which just so happens to be the Washington Football Team and that’s awesome. Because this is a team that was all but forgotten by football fans and now, they’re in the tournament and in the national conversation once again. Which is a testament to Ron Rivera’s skills as a head coach. And while this team will likely be bounced out of the playoffs this weekend because they’re not quite there yet, that’s okay. Because if this is what Washington can accomplish with a so-so roster, imagine what they will do later this year, when they reload said roster with far better talent.
 
The New York Jets finally did the franchise a solid by firing Adam Gase.
Sometimes executives in football make some head-scratching decisions, personnel wise, and this year definitely featured a doozy, since no one can explain exactly why the front office let Adam Gase coach the New York Jets for the entire season. Because Gase simply lost control of this team and he did a terrible job of having them ready to play on Sunday. But despite the fact that this team established itself as the laughingstock of the league early on in the season, Gase was still allowed to prowl the sidelines for the entire year. But finally, the front office relieved Adam Gase of his head coaching duties on Sunday night and hopefully the Jets learned a valuable lesson when it comes to selecting a head coach. In that, sometimes the guys that are the next hot thing, simply don’t have what it takes to lead a team to victory and all Jets fans can hope for now, is a long and thorough search for their next head coach. One that hopefully finds this team the right leader so this franchise can get back to winning.
 
The Cleveland Browns finally ended their playoff drought.
Make no mistake about it, the Browns getting back into the playoffs is a huge deal to say the least. Because this team and more importantly this fanbase, have dealt with an incredible stretch of failure. One that has seen quarterbacks come and go under center, because the team simply couldn’t evaluate talent in the slightest and to make matters worse, this team also endured an 0-16 season not that long ago, and really… that’s but a sampling of the problems that the Browns have faced since the last time they were in the tournament, making them something of a running joke in the league. But at long last, they’re back in and they also have a dynamic young QB under center. One that can ball and make big moments happen and that’s just amazing to say the least. And while we don’t know how this playoff run is going to end, what matters more is that the Browns are finally moving in the right direction and that’s a wonderful thing for the fans that have stuck by this team, regardless of the results.
 
Derrick Henry joined quite the elite club on Sunday.
These days in the NFL, the amazing rule changes that benefit offenses, really do make it seem as though every record out there is going to fall. But while that has allowed for incredible numbers to be put up on a regular basis, to the point where a record falling doesn’t quite hold the weight that it used to; there are still some accomplishments on offense that are worth discussing and celebrating. Such as when a tailback goes over 2,000 yards in a single season. Because that is something that doesn’t happen all that often in this pass happy league and also because bruiser running backs are rare these days. But it does happen from time to time and for the eighth time in league history, it happened again on Sunday. For Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans crossed that threshold and that’s amazing to say the least. Because it speaks to Derrick’s work ethic and determination to be the best tailback in the league and well, this milestone makes it clear that Derrick Henry has accomplished that particular mission.
 
The Buffalo Bills are going to make the playoffs quite interesting.
Every year there is a particular team that heads into the tournament, that simply makes life hell for every team that they face. Last year, it was the Tennessee Titans since they were able to shock the AFC by ending the Patriots dynasty and by knocking out the number one seeded Ravens before falling to the Chiefs on Championship Sunday and this year, it looks as though the Buffalo Bills are going to fill that role. Simply because they continue to surprise the league and Sunday’s game against the Dolphins reinforced that. Because no one thought they would drop a fifty-burger on Miami, but they did, and they made it happen with second teamers. Which speaks to their depth and their determination and well, they’re going to make the playoffs supremely interesting for certain and no one should be surprised if they make it to the title game. Since this team has made it clear they’re in it to win it and they’ll stop at nothing to earn the dub.  

​Well, football fans, we made it. After months of stress and strife in the football world (and our everyday lives for that matter as well), we’ve arrived in 2021. And it is just wonderful to know that we are finally inching closer to playoff football. Because tomorrow sees the regular season in the NFL come to a close and thanks to the strangeness of the past year, we still have big games looming on the horizon for teams that are hoping to make it into the tournament. Which means that the time has come to preview some of the stories and matchups that await us tomorrow, when Week 17 in the NFL gets underway.
 
Who will win the NFC East?
Usually by now, the division champions are either crowned or the team that will clench it, is super close to locking everything up. But this season is of course, the weirdest one on record and for proof… then look no further than the situation in the NFC East. Because at this point, we haven’t a clue who will win this division and there really isn’t a clear victor waiting in the wings and that’s just wild. But alas, there has to be a winner and well… if I had to guess, it is going to be the Washington Football Team. Simply because they really do have the best defense in the division and Ron Rivera is able to draw something powerful out of this squad on a weekly basis. But then again, they might not clinch the East, since Dallas is coming on hot and the Giants are also fighting hard to secure a post season berth. Which means all we can do is wait and see how things are going to play out tomorrow and really, the only thing that is a certainty when it comes to the NFC East; is that the winner of this division will likely be one and done in the postseason. Because none of these squads are elite in the slightest.
 
Which coaches will be fired after this weekend?
If there is one unfortunate tradition that the NFL takes part in every year, it would have to be, Black Monday. For this is the day where coaches are sent packing en masse for not leading their team to victory and while several sub-par coaches have already been let go this year, there will most certainly be more when Week 17 wraps up. But who could that potentially be? Well, there are three names that definitely come to mind in regard to that question: Adam Gase, Anthony Lynn and Doug Marrone. Because none of these coaches have been able to get their teams going, despite having talent on the roster and of course, Gase has presided over one of the worst seasons in New York Jets history. So, I fully expect all of these gentlemen to be gone come Monday, and hopefully their exits finally allow for the Jets and Chargers and Jaguars to find some measure of success, since they’ve been searching for wins for some time now.

It’s been quite the long time since the Miami Dolphins enjoyed any kind of actual playoff run. In fact, the last time they made it past the Wild Card Round was the year 2000. But the Dolphins have a chance to return to the postseason and make a splash in the playoffs for a change, if they beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and that is uh… that’s a tall task. Because the Bills have proven themselves to be one of the best teams in the AFC this year, and they are playing lights out football in every phase of the game. And while there is a 50/50 chance that Josh Allen will sit out a fair chunk of this game, if not all of it, that really doesn’t help Miami’s chances. Because that defense is pretty darn stout, and this team would love to go 13-3 and remind the league that they are forced to be reckoned with. But there is a chance that Miami could pull off the upset here, since they are a plucky squad that plays with a nothing to lose attitude. But more than likely, Buffalo will wrap up the win here no problem, because they boast the better team.

​Well, let’s be honest folks… this game is less about whether or not Pittsburgh can right all of their wrongs in this game and is more about Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns. Because it’s already been announced that Big Ben is going to sit this one out and let Mason Rudolph take the snaps under center, and the Steelers are already in. Which means that Baker Mayfield has a grand opportunity in front of him here, to take control of this game and possibly get the Browns into the playoffs for the first time since 2002. While at the same time, showing the football world that he is indeed worthy of the number one overall draft pick, that the Browns spent on him a few years ago and honestly, I think he might be able to pull off the ‘upset’ here. Because he really has done some impressive things on the field this year and all of his Wide Receivers are back after last week’s Covid incident. So, don’t be shocked if Mayfield wows us all and leads the Browns into the post-season, because this QB and this team are finding their stride at just the right time.

​Well, it took sixteen weeks. But at long last we kinda, sorta, mostly… have an idea what the playoff picture looks like in the NFL. Okay, just kidding, we really only have a clue as to which teams are going to be the top-tier seeds, and even that is murky in some cases. Simply because this was another wild weekend of football. One filled to the brim with epic surprises and upsets and well… rather than continue to scratch our heads and try to figure out the endless playoff scenarios for Week 17, let’s take a moment and reflect upon this wild weekend of football and all the lessons it sent our way.
 
Tampa Bay returns to the postseason.
Thirteen years. That’s how long it’s been since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers enjoyed a playoff run and even then… it was a short run, since they were quickly bounced from Wild Card Weekend. But after languishing and searching for a quarterback and defense that could give them a shot at the postseason once again, their time has finally arrived. For Tom Brady and a solid defense has finally given them another shot at the tournament and while this should be cause for celebration, let’s be honest… there are definitely some concerns swirling around this team as the postseason looms. Because the offense is inconsistent at best and that defense can in fact be worn down, and they are going to be facing some tough teams in January. So hopefully they can figure out how to keep that D fresh and how to find a rhythm on offense in Week 17 and in practice leading up to their playoff game. Because if they cannot, then it will be another one and done, for a team that is desperate to return to glory.
 
The NFL needs to expand practice squad rosters for the postseason.
Truly, one of the finest ideas that the league had this year in regard to its Covid response, was to expand the practice squad, all so that teams could dip into the talent pool in the event of a positive Covid test. And while this has indeed helped at times, this weekend’s incident with the Browns just goes to show that surprises can and will happen with rosters at the most inopportune time and that means… the league needs to expand their practice squad rosters for the playoffs. Because without a bubble, another multiple player incident could happen again, and that could impact the quality of a playoff game. And the league doesn’t need that kind of embarrassment, especially after all the missteps that have occurred in 2020.
 
The Jacksonville Jaguars won the Trevor Lawrence lottery.
Truly, the greatest gift that a franchise can give to their fans, is a Super Bowl Championship. Since that gives their fans the sheer joy of knowing that their team is the finest in the land, and all the bragging rights that come with that. But for fans that languish through a tough year, they get their own special consolation prize, one that we don’t talk about enough… hope. Because sometimes a losing record means that a team will be able to snag the finest player in the draft and the potential and possibilities they bring to the table, brings forth all kinds of hope and that’s precisely what fans in Jacksonville are feeling right now. For they now hold the #1 pick in the 2021 Draft, and they will undoubtedly select the ultra-talented Trevor Lawrence and that’s huge. Because this team has never really had a top-tier franchise quarterback and nabbing him could change the landscape of the AFC South if the right cast is put around him. So, here’s to hoping Mister Lawrence finally brings good fortune to this flailing Florida team, because every fan deserves to feel good about their franchise and selecting this skilled QB will go a long way in making that happen.
 
The Pittsburgh Steelers had quite the scare on Sunday.
It’s a big deal when a team slides into a losing streak. Simply because a chain of losses gets into the head of every player on that team and for a moment there on Sunday, it seemed as though Pittsburgh was about to deal with the sour reality that they were in the midst of a terrible losing streak. But something special happened in the second half of their game against the Colts, and they pulled it together and locked up a super important win. One that reminded them of how they earned their quality record in the first place and well… it just goes to show that a little fear can be helpful at times. Since this team did not want to let bad vibes take hold this close to the tournament, but they’re not out of the woods just yet. Because teams now have an idea of what the Steelers’ offensive playbook consists of, and it will be up to the coaching staff to keep their opponents guessing, otherwise their joyous playoff run will end early and in disgrace.
 
The Washington Football Team made the right call with Dwayne Haskins.
It seems as though every couple of years, a ‘superstar’ arrives in the league that thinks they are bigger than the team and the game and they’re just looking forward to dominating the league with their sheer presence instead of instilling fear with their play. And well, it would seem that the next player that meets that criteria, is Dwayne Haskins. Because he’s done all the wrong things since he’s come into the league, and well… what makes his story different is that the Washington Football Team handled his mistakes in a unique manner. Because so many teams will hang onto the wrong guy when they are taken with a high draft pick, since pride in such matters comes into play. But yesterday saw this team outright release Haskins because they’d simply had enough and understood he wasn’t getting it and that’s a wonderful thing. Since it sets the tone in Maryland, that team comes first and it also shows that Ron Rivera is going to do what he must to change the culture in this town, and most important of all, hopefully this serves as a wakeup call to Haskins. One that he can answer in a noble manner, IF he gets a second chance in the NFL.  

​Normally this time of year, the playoff picture is starting to become crystal clear. In fact, some teams will bench their starters in Weeks 16 and 17 because they’re in and they are happy with their respective seed. But this year, the playoff picture is as murky as it gets, since so many teams are still vying for slots. Which means this next to last week in the regular season is going to be intense and filled to the brim with epic play, and likely a few surprises. And with that in mind, it is time to dive into this Christmas Eve edition of the NFL Roundup and preview all the Yuletide football treats that are headed our way.
 
Will the New York Jets play the spoiler once again?
Admittedly, I’ve been quite hard on the Jets this season, but understandably so. Because they’ve been awful. But I’m also keen to give credit where credit is due, and they definitely deserve a proverbial tipping of the cap for beating the Rams last week. Since this team finally showed everyone they can play at a high level when properly motivated. In fact, that win was so decisive, it does leave one to wonder if these guys can pull off another upset against the Browns this weekend and honestly, I don’t think they can. Because Cleveland is on a tear right now and they are eager to continue to silence their doubters, and they are just itching to pull out a win over the plucky Jets. But on the plus side, hopefully some of New York’s players are motivated now to at least put up a fight against Cleveland, so they can show their soon-to-be new head coach that they deserve to stay in Gotham.
 
Can the New England Patriots avoid their first losing season in twenty years?
It’s been a long time since the New England Patriots have finished at or below .500 as a team, but for the first time in twenty years, they’re facing that prospect. For a loss on Monday Night Football would put their season record at 6-9 and guarantee a losing season for Bill Belichick and his once dynamic squad and well, at this point everyone is wondering as to whether or not the Pats are going to avoid such an embarrassment and honestly, I don’t think they can. Because they’re not a good team in the slightest and they’re going up against the new AFC East champion, one that is dynamic and youthful and fearless and that likely means that their nightmare season is going to continue with a painful and crushing loss to the Buffalo Bills.
 
Can the Washington Football Team take control of the NFC East?
It’s been a strange year in the aforementioned NFC East. Simply because no squad has established itself as the outright leader of this small collection of teams, but Washington could make that happen on Sunday. Because a win over Carolina would make them 7-8 and their closest competition is battling the Ravens and honestly, the odds are most certainly in their favor when it comes to taking the lead in this division. Because the offense is finally starting to click after weeks of painful play, and for that matter, this defense is playing lights out football right now and most important of all, Carolina is in rebuilding mode and isn’t that great of a team. So, don’t be shocked if Ron Rivera’s boys put it together on Sunday and establish a strong lead in a messy division.

​Normally, a game of this caliber would feature all kinds of discussions about two juggernaut teams going at it, and how this game might result in a dynamic shootout. But the last few weeks have changed the narrative of this particular matchup… simply because the Steelers have gone from the toast of the town to the league’s new clown and the Colts are red hot at the moment. Which means all eyes are going to be on Pittsburgh in this game, because everyone is dying to know as to whether or not the Steelers are for real, or if they’re straight up chumps and well… their play will answer that question. Because if they cannot rally and rise to the occasion and make a game out of this one, then it will quickly become clear that teams know exactly how to beat them. Which might make this game the most important one of the year for the Steelers. Because if they fall to pieces in this one, there’s a good chance they’ll be one and done in the playoffs.

Speaking of teams that are in a desperate need of a win, let’s talk about the Rams. Because they are coming off an embarrassing loss as well, one where they looked shell shocked at the end. And a win here would go a long way in rebuilding their confidence, especially since it is against a divisional rival and believe it or not, they have a shot at winning this one. Because Seattle’s defense is suspect at best, and if Jared Goff can get into a rhythm and use long and sustained drives to put points on the board and give their defense some time to rest… then they can get a hell of a rebound win here. But if they walk into this game with an ounce of doubt in their minds, or regress when Russell Wilson and his powerhouse offense push them around, then expect the Rams to fall hard in this game and it really should be interesting to see which Los Angeles team shows up in this one.

​Make no mistake about it, this is a game that looks like an instant classic on paper. Because you have the dynamic Titans offense facing off against the equally dynamic Green Bay offense, which screams shootout and honestly, I think that is going to be case. Because both of teams know how to put on a show and they both hate the idea of being behind on the scoreboard. Which means it will be difficult to declare a definitive winner in this matchup. But if I had to guess, Tennessee is going to be the victor in this one. Simply because Green Bay has a tendency to underestimate their opponents and the Titans do boast the better defense and the better run game and all of those elements are going to prove troublesome for the Packers when all is said and done.

Over the course of the past fifteen weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the 2020 NFL Season has surprised us on a consistent basis and there is good reason for that kind of discussion. Simply because week in and week out, something incredible and stunning and unpredictable happens in this league and wouldn’t you know it? Week 15 is/was no exception to this unspoken rule. Because this past weekend’s slate of games featured more jaw dropping moments, the kind that few of us saw coming. But thankfully, big moments in football have their merits, since they teach us important lessons and the time has come for us to dive into those lessons and the other wild moments that Week 15 in the NFL sent our way.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to change things up on offense.
It wasn’t all that long ago, that the Pittsburgh Steelers were the toast of the town. For they were 11-0, and it truly seemed as though they were going to lock up home field advantage throughout the playoffs with minimal effort. But then Washington happened, and things haven’t been the same. In fact, this team is in a downward spiral after losing to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night and well, it is now inherently clear that Pittsburgh needs to make some serious offensive changes, Because teams have figured out their style of play and are able to shut it down now with minimal effort and if by chance the Steelers cannot alter their playbook or offensive philosophy and quick… then expect the spiral to continue, one that will be punctuated with a first-round exit from the playoffs.
 
There’s a new division champion in the AFC East.
If there is one particular constant in the NFL, it would have to be that the New England Patriots tend to lock up the AFC East about this time of year. Because more often than not, they’re five or six games ahead of their competition in December and they win the AFC East so often, that fans rarely pay any mind to this particular playoff race. But the times, they are a changing and on Saturday, a new champion was crowned. For the Buffalo Bills wrapped up this prestigious title after beating the Denver Broncos and well, this is quite amazing when all is said and done. Because not only does it speak to the impact of Tom Brady’s departure, but it also serves to remind us that Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott have transformed the Bills into so much more and it will be quite interesting to see how far this team is going to go in January, now that they’ve booked their reservation for the postseason.
 
Can anyone beat the Chiefs?
Speaking of quality teams, let’s take a moment and talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. Because this is a squad that was quite frankly, vulnerable earlier this year, since teams were able to keep it close on the scoreboard with them consistently, and the Raiders even managed to drop an L into their record. But as the weeks have rolled along, this team has gotten better, stronger even, to the point where a shootout with a quality NFC opponent doesn’t even phase them during crunch time. Which begs an important question, in that… can anyone beat this team? And I honestly don’t have an answer to that question. Because week in and week out, this team just finds a way to win and that’s bad news for the folks that don’t like this squad, and the rest of the league in general. Because it really seems as though the Chiefs are poised to win it all again, courtesy of the endless confidence that this team exudes.
 
The Los Angeles Rams embarrassed themselves on Sunday.
Something that we can all agree upon, is the sheer fact that the New York Jets are in fact, the worst team in football this year. Because they just stink in every aspect of the game, and they had no business beating the Rams on Sunday. But they did, and while it might not have been a blowout affair, a win is a win and truth be told, the Rams need to feel outright shame for losing this game. Because they have far better talent on the field, and better coaches on the sidelines and well… this loss is likely related to a good old-fashioned case of taking one’s opponent for granted. Because at times the Rams seemed stunned that the Jets even bothered to put up a fight and hopefully this embarrassing result will teach the Rams a solid lesson. In that, they need to approach every game like it is the last one of year and show their opponent some measure of respect, otherwise this kind of embarrassing loss will happen again.
 
Are the Indianapolis Colts the real deal?
Every year, it seems as though there is a quality team that every fan and analyst views with a touch of skepticism. Because people simply don’t know if they’re actually the real deal and this year, that team is the Indianapolis Colts. Because despite their 10-4 record, everyone is wondering if this team is a legit contender and honestly, they might be. Because their offense can put up some serious points when they want to, and their leaky defense can in fact… stop a team when they apply themselves. But alas, there is really only one way to know if they’re the real deal, and that is to have this team go head-to-head with a quality squad, one that has delivered week in and week out and sadly, that might not happen until the playoffs. Which means that we will have to wait a little longer to understand just how good this team really is.

Week 15 can be quite the unique time of year in the NFL. Simply because it is a bit of a no man’s land. For top-tier teams are itching to compete in the playoffs, while other teams are quietly awaiting the end of the season, so they can make major changes to their squad and fare better in the new year. But while there is an odd air surrounding the league during this time of year, that doesn’t mean the games get any less boring. Because the elite are down for more practice and the scrappy teams are hoping for an upset to bolster their pride and that means we are going to be treated to some entertaining games, the kind that will find a way to surprise us and without further ado, let’s take a moment to preview Week 15 in the NFL and all of the wonderful stories and matchups it is going to send our way.

Which Denver Broncos team will show up this weekend?
The Broncos have been quite the interesting conundrum in 2020. Because at times, their play reflects their record through and through. While at other times, they are a lights out squad, one that can upset a top-tier team or they straight up punish their opponent and that leaves everyone wondering which particular team is going to show up this weekend and if I had to guess, it would be the latter. Simply because their win over Carolina has them energized to play and honestly, another good game is exactly what Drew Lock needs as he continues to grow. But you’ll note that I didn’t say anything about them winning and I won’t. Because Buffalo is the better team here, and barring some kind of a surprise, Denver isn’t going to beat them. But they should make a game out of it and quality play is critical for this young team and their future.
 
Will Philadelphia play the spoiler this weekend?
A few weeks ago, talking about Philadelphia in a positive light was an outright impossibility. But the bold decision to bench their franchise quarterback for rookie Jalen Hurts has changed the conversation for certain. Simply because Hurts commands this offense in a whole different manner, one that the team responds to and that really does leave one to wonder… as to whether or not the Eagles can upset the Cardinals on the road this weekend and honestly, it is possible. Because the Cardinals have similar vulnerabilities to the Saints on defense, and if the Eagles can exploit those and contain Kyler Murray, then they’ll have the victory and truth be told, there is a strong possibility that this might happen. For the Cardinals are struggling to keep their season together and the Eagles are playing as though they have nothing to lose.
 
Will the Steelers rebound this weekend?
Truly the past couple of weeks have been quite trying for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Simply because they are shell-shocked at the moment and are seemingly unable to get out of their own way when it comes to the mistakes they’re making and the missed opportunities they’re leaving out on the field. But the good news, is that this elite team is likely going to get the rebound game that it needs this weekend, since they’re playing the lowly Bengals. But alas, there are no guarantees in the NFL. So, if Pittsburgh continues to make big goofs on offense and the defense remains lax, then there’s a chance that Cincy could shock the world and make Pittsburgh 11-3. But more than likely, the Steelers will win this game, largely due to the fact that the fight went out of Cincinnati the instant Joe Burrow was lost to injury.

​There are a great many reasons that this game is on our radar this weekend. Such as the fact that it features two high scoring offenses and some bend but don’t break defenses. But what really makes it so incredibly fascinating, is the sheer fact that this game features two teams in two vastly different places than they were a year ago. Because back then, Miami was trying to put together a quality game and was looking at its millionth fourth place finish in the AFC East, and the Patriots were riding high and preparing for the playoffs. But this year… Miami is in line for the playoffs if they keep up their good play and the Pats are desperately trying to even quality for the postseason. Which means that we should actually be in for one quality matchup since the playoff stakes are high. But if I had to pick a winner, it would definitely have to be Miami. Simply because they have the better quarterback and better defense, and they are likely itching to knock New England out of playoff contention.

Truly this is a game that’s on everyone’s radar, simply because it could serve as a Super Bowl Preview. Because the Saints are a top-tier team, even without their star QB and of course, the Chiefs continue to wow the football world week in and week out, and the dynamic play of both of these teams might land them in the big game come February. But in the here and the now, they have to play this particular game, one that should be a fun one to watch. Because both of these teams want the win, simply because they’re both fighting for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, so don’t be shocked if this one ends up being a high scoring affair. But as to who wins this one, well let’s be honest… it is going to be the Chiefs. Because they have the better offense, plain and simple and they know how to win big games like this one.

​Normally highlighting a 9-4 team that is taking on a sub .500 team seems like a waste of time, but this game is definitely different for certain. Simply because the Giants are starting to play at a supremely high level, and that’s allowed for them to make life hell for elite teams since they have been known to upset a top-tier team or give them fits on the field. And they are taking on a flawed but good Cleveland team, one that is still searching for their identity on both sides of the ball and is yearning for consistency and that means… there is a chance that New York can win this game. So, if they can keep Mayfield from finding a rhythm and use long and sustained drives to get to the end zone, then they’ve got a chance at winning this one. But truth be told, I expect Cleveland to walk away with the victory here, simply because #6 has some weapons to play with.

Well football fans, it is definitely safe to say that Week 14 in the NFL exceeded everyone’s expectations. Simply because it was filled to the brim with big games and epic wins and it doesn’t hurt that the prime-time games left us on the edge of our seats as well. If anything, it is definitely safe to say that this weekend’s slate of games were akin to perfection, and the good vibes these games sent our way only adds to the excitement for the playoffs. Because clearly, just about every team heading toward the tournament is ready to play their hearts out. But what truly made Week 14 so worth our while, was the juicy storylines and lessons that it sent our way. So, without further ado, let’s reflect upon those very things while we wait for another wild weekend of football to get underway.

What’s next for Carson Wentz?
Make no mistake about, Carson Wentz is likely done in Philadelphia. Because it is never a good thing for a former #2 overall draft pick to be outplayed by a second-round rookie. But that’s precisely what happened did on Sunday. Because Jalen Hurts commanded this team in a manner that Wentz never has and that is the kind of upstaging that gets you sent packing in the offseason. The only question that remains now, is where Carson is going to land when the offseason starts. Because he won’t be drummed out of the league just yet, since the NFL is quarterback starved, and there is someone who will believe that he isn’t a bust, and just needs a fresh start in a new town to jump start his career. As to where that is exactly, time will tell, but don’t be shocked to see him land with a big-name franchise. Because the Pats, Colts and Saints and a few others might be in need of a new starting QB once 2021 hits and they will definitely covet a guy with a ton of starting experience, regardless of his track record in Philly.
 
It is safe to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers are a little shell-shocked right now.
Losing does one of two things to a quality team. It either motivates them to immediately up their game so they don’t get stuck in a losing streak… or they get stuck in a losing streak and sadly the latter is happening to the Steelers at the moment. Because they are clearly shell-shocked at the moment and uncomfortable with their win streak being snapped and well, they need to clear their heads immediately and stop worrying about their record. Because they are a great football team, one that can dominate when they play loose and without worry. But alas, there are tinges of doubt in the minds of the players right now, and it will be up to Head Coach Mike Tomlin to focus this team and to get them back to fundamentals, so they can get back to their winning ways and hopefully he helps them get there soon. Because the Bills and the Chiefs are making great strides as the season comes to a close and if Pittsburgh wants a shot at a solid playoff seed, they need to quit moping about and play their game. 
 
The Buffalo Bills continue to impress.
It wasn’t all that long ago that the Buffalo Bills were considered to be a ‘soft’ team. One that didn’t know how to finish or stand up to a quality opponent. And clearly, those are criticisms that this team took to heart in 2020, because they have been fearless in their play all year and for their efforts, they’re now 10-3 and in command of the AFC East and what’s truly scary about this team, is that they are still playing as though people doubt their abilities, despite the fact that their victory over Pittsburgh silenced all of their critics. Which means we can expect more quality play from this team over the new few weeks as they continue to solidify their standing as one of the league’s elite teams and I fully expect this team to go far into the playoffs, just on fury alone.
 
Congratulations are in order for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers.
Obviously, the endgame for every team in the NFL, is to be crowned as Super Bowl Champions. Because that truly is the greatest honor that a team can achieve. But it is also important to recognize some of the titles that get a team to that particular honor, one of which… is a Division Championship. Because owning one’s division is the easiest way to get into the playoffs and well… that’s precisely the honor that Kansas City and Green Bay were able to enjoy this weekend. For they are indeed the Division Champions of the AFC West and NFC North respectively and that’s just incredible. Because every win in the NFL is a tough one and being able to dominate a division in the manner they have, is a seemingly insurmountable task. But they pulled it off and I tip my cap to them for making it look so darn easy.
 
Last night’s Ravens/Browns game was likely a taste of things to come.
Something special is happening in the AFC North. In that, three of the four teams in this division now boast some dynamic young franchise quarterbacks. The kind that love to ball and take chances in doing so and that likely means that football fans are about to be in for some incredible divisional matchups in the years to come. Because Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow really can score at will, as evidenced by last night’s score, and they’re all eager and hungry to win and know division games mean a lot and well, that’s a wonderful thing when all is said and done. Because smash mouth/shootout football is a staple of the AFC North and it is wonderful to know that it is about to make a major comeback, all thanks to some gutsy draft picks at quarterback.

It is definitely safe to say that 2020 has provided football fans everywhere with the wildest season in NFL history. For we simply haven’t had a clue what to expect during any given week, and we’ve even seen games shuffled around to strange times of day thanks to the pandemic. In fact, this year has been so off the wall and mind bending that a great deal of us have forgotten about the fact… that season is nearing its end. Because we are a mere four weeks from the postseason and that means every game is starting to carry more weight and meaning, now that the playoff field has been expanded. And with that in mind… the time has come to dive into Week 14’s bevy of games and preview which ones are worth watching and which ones will offer up the finest storylines as the push for the playoffs continues along.

Will the Titans rebound against the Jaguars?
Make no mistake about it, the Tennessee Titans are in a tough place right now. Because they are coming off of a nasty loss, one that exposed all the flaws in their defense and that leaves one to wonder as to whether or not they can rebound against the lowly Jaguars on Sunday and the answer to that question is… maybe? Because the Jags have a blueprint on how to beat them, one that Cleveland was nice enough to supply the entire league with. Which means that if the Jags can take advantage the gaps that Cleveland exposed and neutralize the run, then they have a shot at pulling off quite the upset. But more than likely, Tennessee is going to win this matchup. Simply because they are loaded with talent and Jacksonville… well, they’re Jacksonville.
 
Will the New York Giants upset the Arizona Cardinals?
Truly, the New York Giants have become the feel-good story of the season. Because they are finally coming together as a team and playing at a high level and that’s allowed for them to take charge of the NFC East and even play the role of the spoiler, since they shocked the Seattle Seahawks last week. Which means that there is one big question hanging over their game with the Cardinals on Sunday, in that… is it possible for them to pull off another upset? And honestly, I think they can. Because they really are playing as though they have nothing to lose right now. So, if they can once again dominate on defense and find ways to put points on the board, they can absolutely beat Arizona and don’t be shocked if they do. Because something special is happening with this team right now and they might be peaking at just the right time.
 
Can the Tampa Bay Buccaneers end their losing streak on Sunday?
Without a doubt, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have to be the biggest disappointment of the 2020 season. Because this team was loaded with talent on defense coming into this season and going out and getting marquee names like Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski should have allowed for this team to dominate. But instead, they’re so-so at best and they’re dealing with a two-game losing streak, one that they are undoubtedly hoping to break on Sunday and honestly… I’m not sure they can. Because teams are able to get to Brady now and disrupt his routes and blanket his receivers and that’s a playbook that Minnesota is going to use often and if they are able to execute it just right, they’ll walk away with a huge win here, one that will cause great harm to Tampa Bay’s playoff hopes.

This is another one of those games that a year ago, fans would pay no mind to, mainly because the Dolphins were terrible back then. But once again, the changing fortunes of the NFL have put Miami back into the spotlight since they now boast a wonderful offense and defense and that means they should put up a decent fight against the defending champions in this game. Because Miami wants to prove to the football world that their roster purge was all part of a grand plan to return to glory, one that features Tua as the centerpiece of that rebuild. But while they will indeed put on a show and keep things interesting in this game, let’s be honest… the Chiefs are going to win this one when all is said and done. Simply because they are the better team.

If there is one game that should excite football fans everywhere in Week 14, this is the one. Because this one features two AFC juggernauts, the kind that are dominating on offense and that means we are likely in for quite the treat. Because Josh Allen knows how to read defenses now and he knows how to take advantage of whatever opportunity they give him, and that should allow for him to put some points up on the board. But on the flip side of that, Big Ben has been around in this league a long time, and he knows what it takes to win and has seen it all. And once again, he has weapons galore at his fingertips and will be able to answer whatever Allen does no problem. Which means this game is all about defense, and the first one to shore up, is the one that secures a big-time victory for their franchise, and if I had to guess which team will pull that off… it would have to be Pittsburgh. Because nobody knows defense like the Steelers.

​AFC North games are always a treat in prime-time football, simply because the franchises in this division of football; cannot stand one another. So, they tend to leave everything out on the field when they play and that’s precisely what I am expecting to see here. But there is an added bonus to this particular matchup that should make it even more appealing. In that, both of these teams have something to prove. For Baltimore wants the football world to know that they are indeed a top-tier team and that their record last year was no fluke. And as for Cleveland, well this is another opportunity for them to continue to wow the NFL and let everyone know that this franchise is leaving its losing ways behind and, in the end, I honestly think that Cleveland is going to win this game. Because they are playing incredible football and they are hands down, better than the Ravens.  

Normally after Week 13 in the NFL wraps up, football fans are focused upon how the weekend's slate of games impacted the playoff picture and who inched closer to or outright clinched that all-important playoff berth or division title. But this year, I think it is safe to say that we are all just happy with the fact that the week played out like normal, since there were zero issues related to Covid. Because that allowed for some great games to take place and for some playoff shuffling to happen as well and with that in mind, it’s best we dive right in and reflect upon one quality week of football and all the lessons it sent our way.

There is a chance the New York Jets will go 0-16.
One thing that we can definitely agree upon at this point, is that the New York Jets are the worst team in the NFL right now. Because they literally handed the Raiders that win by way of the worst defensive play call possible in the closing minutes of that game. And while Gregg Williams is gone from the Meadowlands for that stupid call, this team still runs the risk of going 0-16 in 2020 and truth be told, I fully expect for that to happen. Because this team is lost and unable to finish games or drives or anything for that matter. So, don’t be shocked if this squad fumbles their way to a winless season, all because executive leadership made the piss poor decision to stand by a worthless and terrible head coach.

The road to the Super Bowl is long and winding for certain. But to even get a chance at seeing Title Town, something quite important has to happen for teams that are vying for a shot at the Lombardi Trophy, in that, they have to get into the playoffs. Which is an item that both the Saints and the Chiefs can check off of their respective postseason lists. Because thanks to a pair of dynamic and solid wins over their respective opponents this week, they each clinched a playoff berth in the 2020 tournament. So, I definitely tip my cap to both of these teams, because they outright earned their respective spots in the postseason and it should be interesting to see what both of them do in the playoffs since KC is looking to defend their title and build a dynasty and the Saints are looking to get their franchise hero back to the biggest game in all the land, one more time.
 
The New York Giants are a pleasant surprise this year.
It wasn’t all that long ago that the New York Giants were all but forgotten by football fans. After all, their marquee tailback was shelved with a knee injury and Daniel Jones really didn’t seem to be doing anything that special under center. But slowly and surely, this team has started to come together as a singular unit, the kind that is a well-oiled machine regardless of who is in the lineup and that’s made them quite the pleasant surprise in 2020. Because they are able to hang with any team and for proof… then look no further than Sunday’s game. For they easily handled the Seahawks on their way to the top of the NFC East, and truly, it should be fascinating to see what this energized team does in the weeks to come, since they are playing as though they have nothing to lose. 
 
The Cleveland Browns offense is scary good right now.
I have to admit, I never expected to write the above text in regard to the Cleveland Browns, but here we are. Because those words are the absolute truth right now and if you don’t believe me, just look at Cleveland's performance on Sunday. Because Baker Mayfield completely and utterly dismantled the Titans defense, something that seemed impossible since they’ve been able to stand tall when necessary. But the highlight reel and the numbers speak for themselves and it just goes to show that when you surround a young quarterback with weapons and trust and the right coaches, wonders can be achieved. But while it is wonderful to celebrate the big day that the Browns offense enjoyed, there are still some dark clouds hanging over this squad, and they all relate to the defense. Because they are woefully inconsistent and if they cannot come together and stop their opponents, then all of this offensive majesty will be wasted in the playoffs, when a potent offense rips the Cleveland D to shreds.
 
Pittsburgh’s win streak finally came to an end on Monday.
If there is one universal truth in football, it would have to be that on any given Sunday or in this case… Monday, you’re either going to win or you’re going to lose, and this is a fact that the Steelers reinforced the other day. Because the Washington Football Team came into this matchup prepared to handle anything Pittsburgh sent their way, and for their efforts, they finally handed Pittsburgh their first loss of the season in a stunning manner. But while Washington gets bragging rights for the time being and an important win in the NFC East, they also might have done the Steelers quite the favor. Because nothing focuses a quality team better than humility, and that means there is a fair chance that the Steelers will come out swinging in their next game, as they work to get back to their winning ways.

Hello again football fans, and welcome to another staggered edition of The NFL Roundup, and we’re going with a Saturday version of this column, because once again, the schedule remains a mess and there is football spread out over three days since Covid issues are the norm right now. And all we can hope for at this point, is that there are no surprises or missteps in the next couple of days, so that everyone in the league is safe and so that fans can enjoy the wonderful games and storylines that await us and with that in mind, let’s dive right in and preview those games and those stories before Week 13 in the NFL gets underway.

Can Taysom Hill go 3-0 as a starter?
Truly, one of the most unexpected surprises of the 2020 campaign, was seeing WR/QB hybrid, Taysom Hill take over the starting QB position for the New Orleans Saints. Simply because everyone thought the job was going to Jameis Winston and well, what matters the most about this decision, is that Hill has not disappointed. For he is 2-0 heading into tomorrow’s games and well… can he make it three in a row? And the answer to that question is… maybe. Mainly because, teams have tape on him now. So, there is a chance that Atlanta can contain him and expose his weaknesses. But if he plays solid, mistake-free football during tomorrow’s matchup and keeps sustained drives going that end in points, then expect him to lead the Saints to another victory.
 
Will the Lions win big with a new coach at the helm?
Thus far, the firings of several high-profile coaches haven’t changed the fortunes of the teams they left behind all that much. For the Texans are still in dire straits and the Atlanta Falcons aren’t exactly tearing up the league with Dan Quinn gone. Which leaves one to wonder, if the Lions will finally put it altogether with Matt Patricia out of the picture and well… it is possible. Simply because the players weren’t responding to him and his schemes in the slightest. So, if interim Head Coach Darrell Bevell puts together a solid game plan, one that plays to the strengths of this team, then they should handily beat the Bears no problem. But if not, well then that’s simply par for the course and Detroit can just let Coach Bevell get some experience related to being ‘the guy’ for a little while, before they find the right person for the job in 2021.
 
Will the Ravens rebound from their unfortunate loss to the Steelers?
Make no mistake about it, the Ravens put together quite the campaign against the Steelers when they were finally able to play them on Wednesday, despite their roster standing due to Covid. Which means that such a loss has to sting and sting badly and they are undoubtedly looking to rebound against the Cowboys come Tuesday, but can they? Because there’s a lot that is wrong with the Ravens right now. For Lamar Jackson isn’t playing at a high level and the defense is suspect and well, they’re going up against a Dallas squad that is eager to beat someone of quality to quiet the conversation about how bad they are this year. So, if the Ravens finally put it together on both sides of the ball, expect them to walk away with a much-needed win, but if their usual issues continue to persist against the Cowboys, don’t be shocked if they lose in an embarrassing manner.

It is really is quite funny how quickly things can change in the NFL. Because a couple of years ago, no sportswriter would be interested in this game in the slightest. But alas, some big personnel moves have changed the fortunes of both of these teams and now here we are, looking at a shootout for the ages as these two AFC juggernauts take the field on Sunday. But while we could talk at length over the finer points of both of these offenses, let’s be honest… all we are worried about is who is going to win this game and honestly, I haven’t a clue which way this one is going to go. Because these squads both suffer from soft defenses, so really, whichever D opts to step up to the plate, is the one that will secure that all-important victory for their franchise.

​Speaking of changing fortunes in the NFL, this game is another fine example of that. Because it wasn’t that long ago that the Rams were the toast of the NFC and they even managed to net a Super Bowl berth because of their talent and high-level play. And of course, the Cardinals were uh… the Cardinals. But now, the Rams are fighting for their playoffs lives and Arizona is a team on the rise and that is going to make this game a must watch. Because the Cardinals are playing as though they have nothing to lose, and the Rams are quite conservative these days and that means… there is a fair chance that Arizona can win this game and honestly, I expect them to. Simply because they are on a mission to prove to the NFL that they have arrived, and they don’t fear anyone that takes the field with them and that makes them quite the dangerous foe for the ailing Rams.

​Normally, games that feature a lopsided set of teams aren’t worth highlighting, but this one… is special. Partly because, the Niners are sharing State Farm Stadium with Arizona thanks to Covid related measures in the state of California. Which makes this matchup of historical note since you really don’t see the sharing of stadiums in this manner. But it is also of note because, the Niners actually have a chance here. Because this team has a lot of fight in them and they know a few key wins could get them into the playoffs and believe it or not, the Bills are beatable. Because their defense tends to go soft when they have a lead, so if the Niners can surprise them with some lights out play and neutralize Buffalo’s passing game, then they have a shot at winning this one. But truth be told, it will likely end with a Buffalo win, simply because Josh Allen is hard to stop and the Bills would also like to silence their critics with a winning season and a playoff appearance.
