The Canadiens, Wild, and Blue Jackets looked great throughout the year, but were jettisoned early. We’re left with the two conferences sitting at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of fresh blood. In the Eastern Conference, perennial contenders Washington, Pittsburgh, and New York are still in the mix, joined by a fresh face in Ottawa. In the Western Conference, on the other hand, first-round departures by Chicago and San Jose have opened things up for a young, rising team in Edmonton, and for teams still looking to seal the deal and win their first Stanley Cup in a long time (St. Louis) or for the first time ever (Nashville).
